Friendly and helpful store staff. Great with kids
Pros: good instruction, good class atmosphere. Cons: I was double billed and went through hell to fix it. The company initially tried to keep some of my money as an administrative fee. Then it became a credit on my account. Finally I was given my money back after burning bridges in an argument with the owner about my subsequent review. Ironically I had cancelled as I was setting up for a year long membership...
To be fair I'm updating my review, but I want to first address the initial comments left by the owner in the response below (until they are either removed or modified to reflect the truth), in saying that my wife DID in fact try to have this conversation face to face with the him PRIOR to my leaving a review and came away from that feeling that her concerns were not really addressed. That was the only reason I felt, and rightly so, that perhaps in a more public forum such as this, I would be able to spark that much needed conversation. She's the good cop, me not so much, especially when it comes to my kids... Having said that it was a good face to face conversation with the owner today, and to his credit initiated by him, and I am hopeful that these verbal and written exchanges will culminate in a positive, progressive, challenging and effective learning environment for my son. We had heard good things about this studio and my son really loves JJ, so let's hope it all works out great for everyone.
Hayabusa Training Centre is a great gym for many reasons. It has plenty of mat space and a variety of equipment, a diverse amount of classes and most importantly it has great staff. The instructors are very knowledgeable and active in their own training, meaning you get instruction that is relevant if you're looking to compete and a variety of techniques to keep you interested if you're just recreational and looking for fitness. The students are also great to work with and help create an encouraging, welcoming atmosphere that is great to be in and makes coming to practices easy.
Response to owner "After more than a decade at Hayabusa, as a black belt that went from white to black, and once very loyal member. It was ultimately the lack of respect, the treatment of other students who also chose to leave, many which were some black belts and higher ranking members, the members who confronted me with issues in past and present, who felt they could not confront the owner without fear of punishment, the ones who left and still keep contact, and the parents of some students I helped teach in the past, and some current members with the same issues that have not changed but in honesty, worsened over the years. That had brought me to the decision to leave. I was and still am a highly respected previous member of Hayabusa to members who are still currently there and have left in the past. Many who would, and still do, come to me for advice and also concerns. More than a handful just as unhappy as I was. This was not because of my "personal problems" at all, as my only issues or problems were the ones that lived within the gym and the many members who left, many who for years were loyal training partners and loyal champions of Hayabusa. My review was not "poor" but honest, and adjusted according to my experience over 10 years of training there, and to the training partners I watched leave or struggle. Which also stands to strengthen the reasons I am no longer there, and as to think the review "poor" and assume I have "personal problems" is distasteful. In my training at other renowned gyms, I have come to realize that Hayabusa is just not for me, and I wish the business good luck as well. The 3 stars were because the facility is always clean and maintained, the members are wonderful and some of the instructors are great. I can not honestly give 5 stars, I'm sorry.
I trained here several years on and off. If you are not competing or close with the instructor, you will not get proper instruction!! They demonstrate the techniques and it is up to you to figure it out how to do it right lol. When I tried to reach out to the instructor to better myself, I was told that it was my attendance that was the only problem. That was partly true but I was simply looking for help and guidance but I was shot down and blocked on facebook instead!! If you are planning to train at hayabusa Business center lol , you are on your own!! Good luck to you all and peace????
From Familial spirit to Competition with private course available you can learn from the best environment you can have. Price is good when you thing the high level of training you get and numerous course you can do (BJJ, no-gi, Judo, MMA, Kick-boxing, boxing, ladies class, kids class, advance class, some wrestling) work shop...
Hayabusa is beginner-friendly, but still very disciplined, and turns out some major competitors. The premium instruction quality from each discipline helps students meet their goals, and the sense of team/family that makes it a bit of an escape whenever you show up.
I can’t say enough about the Hayabusa Training Centre. World class instructors, amazing classes and a great group of people in and out of the gym.
My family trains here and loves it. I go for Personal Trainer sessions, my wife does a bunch of the classes and our daughter does Little Ninjas! All the instructors are great and every one is treated like family. Its a wonderful place with a respectful culture that challenges athletes at all levels, from top competitors to people just looking to get out and be active.
I have been training at the Hayabusa Training Centre for 2+ years and highly recommend it to anyone, whether you are an aspiring martial artist, recreational fitness enthusiast, or MMA competitor aspiring to compete professionally at the highest level. My entire family trains at Hayabusa and there is a class for everyone including children and adults. The centre is fully equipped and the skilled coaches are always well prepared providing a fun and safe training environment. I would strongly recommend joining the Hayabusa team!
Clean facility and trained instructors! Would recommend!!
Looking to join up so I decided to spectate a beginner BJJ class. The participants worked hard and looked like they were having fun. The instructor was interactive and worked closely with the students. The owner came by and was super friendly, answered all my questions. Even the guy manning the merchandise (obviously trains too) was knowledgeable/friendly. Completely exceeded my expectations. Next...view a striking class.
Great coaching and fun atmosphere
we have had my son, William, in Hayabusa on and off for years. It is a phenomenal boost for his confidence and really nails down respect which carries into school and home. He is currently in BJJ and loves it! We are so thankful for this awesome gym. Highly recommended!
I decided to take up Brazilian Jiu Jitsu one summer because my two good friends train their regularly. I was very nervous to start a sport I had no experience in but Luke and his coaches were very encouraging and guided me through the steps with patience and gave me the confidence I needed. Their class structure is set up very well with different levels so you are always working on challenging and bettering yourself. Hayabusa has created a friendly, and inviting atmosphere to train in and I would recommend this gym to anyone whose interested in starting MMA as well as anyone who is looking to switch. Some of the top MMA athletes from Edmonton come from this gym.
What makes this place stand shoulders above other martial arts schools is the quality of the instructors. Not only do they bring world class experience, but many are natural leaders with positive attitudes. I'd recommend Hayabusa not just to get in shape and learn martial arts, but the people you meet and train with will help you develop as a person. Training with Shaun, and other instructors has been one of the most important things I've done in my life. Period. Talk to Amy and Luke at the centre. Great place for family and kids as well.
Great place to train! The coaches, staff, and students make it welcoming for the newcomer. If you are looking to begin, this is the right place. If you are looking for world class instruction and a competitive team to join, this is also the place! My family and I look forward to the classes and expertise instruction. This gym is exceptionally clean and the environment is supportive and friendly.
Great operation! Wonderful, patient staff!
If you are showing up as a new and inexperienced person, young or old, know that you'll be safe to expand your learning here. There are enough top-level experts here that weird egos can't run the show, but you're getting the best training available. The kids classes exemplify safety alongside quality learning as well. A recent BJJ tournament is an example of how contrasting Hayabusa's students conduct themselves vs others.
Have been coming here for almost a year. Standout things: 1.)The elite quality of instruction from the variety of disciplines. We have repeat title holders from all practices coaching students. This works extremely well for brand new members and veteran fighters alike. The gym owner had a pile of gold medals for everything from no gi world's, to quickest arm bar on a 300lb man (probably). 2.) The student team is very supportive. We have people with extreme skills and elite accomplishments helping and working with newer students, but without the weird ego I've seen at other gyms. Like you're not going to get choked unconscious here as a new person. The second part was important to me because I was a bigger dude with some athletic history and thought I would be a target; not the case at all. Show up with humility and a learning attitude, you'll fit right in. This gym trains several MMA fighters, IBJJF fighters, Judo, and kickboxers from all weight categories. Check it out. They usually give your first class for free, and they now have a dedicated MMA class.
Thanks for being great neighbors and congratulations on opening your new location!
Truly amazing first time experience in jiu jitsu. I went in alone nervous and a little overwhelmed. After I finished the paperwork instructors came up toe made me feel comfortable, confident and excited about the class. They put aside an area for new people to accommodate us and had an instructor teaching the four of us the basics while the majority of the class was working on different things. I felt extremely welcome and comfortable, the encouragement I got from the instructors and the positive feedback really makes me want to go back. As we finished up at the end of the class, everyone could tell it was my first time, and they welcomed me, were extremely nice and genuinely cared if I had a good time. So not only are the staff but my class mates were extremely respectfull. I would highly recommend this to anyone who has wanted to try it. Thank you so much Hayabusa for a great training session, I will be back.
I had my six-year-old enrolled. He enjoyed himself during class but I found the company and people extremely frustrating to deal with. They are very disorganized and not straightforward. They consistently cancelled the day before but provided no make up classes. With cancelations for tournaments, holidays and when I had to keep my child home because of symptoms it started to really add up for each class. There is not only a 30-day cancelation policy in place but a $50 cancellation fee. Even after staying in contact with them and being given a verbal confirmation that I was close enough to the 30 days (that I wasn’t aware of in the first place) it was not honored. We will not be returning. My suggestion to anyone is to have the waivers and documents you sign the first day emailed to you for review. My husband was handed an ipad the first day and asked to sign. We received nothing hard copy or by email. I will not make that mistake with another organization again.
Great place to train, truly feel like family being part of a such a great team!
This gym has everything you could want. Lots of clean open mat space, excellent friendly staff. Amazing coaches and the best part is the group of people that make you feel welcome in the gym. Time of classes available for every type of interest from Judo and BJJ to kickboxing and MMA. Luke Harris is one of the best in the world and he brings is competitive experience and knowledge back to the gym to share with everyone. 6/5 stars.
Things that I like about Hayabusa Training Center....it is one of the best settings in terms of size of mat surface, the cage, and the range of combative styles available. Luke fosters a competitive setting focusing on success and has helped produce a number of champions. The center is family friendly and the children's coaches are positive and fun. The best aspect of the place is the people, that cover a diverse spectrum of interests and talents.
From a range of martial arts to boot camps, personal training and even classes for toddlers there really is something for everyone. Love it here ????
I’ve been here since the first day they were established and can tell you from a professional business person with a family that this is a first class facility with world class training. My family and I train here regularly and have gained the skills required to compete at the highest levels. The environment is welcoming and they insure all egos are checked at the door so it takes out the intimidation factor of entering a martial arts facility. Students and coaches alike are always willing to help and support new members also.
Amazing coaches and staff. The level of instruction is top notch and the facility is beautiful and clean.
Our family has been training at Hayabusa for a couple years now. Very clean family friendly environment with excellent coaches and team mates. They offer a wide variety of classes so there is pretty much something for everyone. Highly recommend this facility. If you are looking into a martial arts facility for anyone from children to adults check them out you will not be disappointed you did!!!!
We signed our 6-year old daughter up for Jiu-Jitsu classes at Hayabusa and authorized automatic payments. She only attended classes for one month as martial arts were not for her. We realized 6 months later that Hayabusa was continuing to take automatic monthly payments but we had not attended any classes beyond the first month. We immediately emailed Hayabusa upon this discovery explaining the mistake and requesting a refund or credit. Hayabusa gave us a card that we scanned every time we came to class so assuming attendance is recorded, they could confirm the mistake. Hayabusa’s response was that they have no contracts and that it is the customer’s responsibility to cancel its monthly membership. They advised that as we had not sent any prior emails requesting cancellation, they would not be providing a refund or credit (but that they would waive the admin fee?). Subsequent emails were met with the same response. Hayabusa made absolutely no attempt to make this right with us. Instead, they completely dismissed us and benefited from our mistake. We also received no “we haven’t seen you in a while” type of communications from Hayabusa during the 6 months we were paying but did not attend classes. We are really surprised a small St. Albert business would choose to treat a customer this way rather than try to find a way to make it right. Hopefully by writing this review, we can prevent others from having this same experience. We cannot recommend Hayabusa at this time.
I’ve been to a few mma gyms in the Edmonton area and I have to say without a doubt Hyabusa Training Center has had to most positive impact on me. The facility is absolutely top notch even the mats are high end. The instructors and coaches are dedicated, professional and very high level. Luke Harris is a BJJ world champion himself and the whole gym is filled with elite athletes at every level. In my opinion Hyabusa Training Center is the best place to learn Brazilian Jiu jitsu in the country. World class!
Top notch instructors for every class offered, plus an excellent and welcoming environment. If you want to start martial arts, you’d be hard pressed to find a better place to learn.
An amazing place to train! Excellent coaches and a clean environment make hayabusa the best place to train martial arts in the Edmonton area! 10/10 would highly recommend.
I enrolled my 2 year old daughter in the parent & tot level 1 program at Hayabusa Training Centre Ltd. The facility is large and easily able to accommodate classes. In the level 1 class the circuit portion of the program is not preset up which could easily be accommodated in a facility this large. In addition to the circuit portion being preset up there could be signs explaining each activity and what to do at the station. The verbal explanations need to be shorter and a wider range of activities need to be introduced. Average children in the age range of this class can only attend to a task for a short time and 4-5 practices of each skill is lots for most of them. I would like to see more games like when the children place colored balls in the matching buckets. It teaches skills including starting, stopping and running which is fun for the children. The class did not have a wide range of activities from class to class, which made it feel as though it was the exact same class every time. Sherry Nelson the lead instructor for the Parent & Tot Program 'Little Ninjas Martial Arts' is very good with the children and is not afraid to get down on the mats and assist the children. One issue I had that with the program was the inability to make up missed classes. My daughter’s class was running during the winter time (2019) which had some very cold days. One class I missed due to weather, to be fair Hayabusa Training Centre Ltd did not cancel the class I missed it on my own accord due to it being -30. I am also a shift worker which makes it impossible to attend every class, my daughter attends a gymnastics program during the week which runs multiple classes which allows for makeup classes during the week Hayabusa Training Centre Ltd does not offer this.
very difficult to actually describe how good the training center is ill put it like this Luke Harris is rated as one of the best jujitsu practitioners in the world so i often tell people imagine being on the same sheet of ice as Connor McDavid every day let that sink in that is who your head instructor is great family facility awesome place to train and learn
My daughter loves it there. Sensei Sherry is great and super patient with the the. Couldn't ask for a better place
I met the owner of Hayabusa and I gotta say, the guy has a passion for the business and looks like he gives it his all. I really respect that. Great place to train and bring your kids to learn the variety of martial arts they have to offer.
Very odd instructors
Hayabusa is family. It is a place full of amazing people who all support each other. And coaches who push you to be your best. I would recommend this gym for anyone looking for a great environment to cultivate your potential!!
An awesome place to train in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, judo and striking. The instructors are very knowledgeable and approachable. Classes for children and adults. A great place for people of any level beginner to advanced.
My experience here could have been better. My first martial arts class i ever took was the bjj class here, after a warm up and some technique drilling we began to roll, i was paired up with an instructor (old guy with grey hair) cause it was my first time ever and he was gonna go through the sparring process with me. Little did i know i was gonna have to fend off a barrage of leg attacks the whole class, i was a bit confused since it had nothing to do with the technique we learned that day (kirmura sweep to mount) and i was a brand new student with no experience in that area. Then the class ends, im understandably tired and sweating and i guess there was some sweat on the mat. As im walking off to go to the locker room this kid coming on the mat for the no gi class right after makes fun of me for sweating so much. I know what people say means nothing especially when its an insult but i was honestly uncomfortable coming back here, i thought martial arts was about respect.
I started taking Brazilian Jiu Jitsu at Hayabusa Training Center about 5 years ago and i have never looked back since. Every class is basically a private seminar as the coaches are all world class competitors and professors. The classes are always challenging and the coaches help you strive to your best abilities. This gym has definitely become my second home and family as the atmosphere and people are amazing. For the best training in the city and for a family orientated gym, look no further than Hayabusa Training Center.
Great place to train
We signed up for the family membership a few months ago and we are hooked. My wife and I have an activity to bond with our kids and find common ground. The kids coaches are fantastic with the kids and members were welcoming and encouraging when my wife and I went to our first Jiu Jitsu class. We were nervous to begin, but that feeling went away as soon as we went into the gym. I recommend this place for anyone looking to start training.
This is the greatest gym you will find anywhere. Thanks to the Owners for your professionalism, attentiveness to detail with training and cleanliness of your fantastic training facility.
Great place to train at! Friendly bunch as well
Great place to learn martial arts, solid coaches/programs in both striking and grappling. Have learned a ton from everyone here. Perfect for all skill levels beginners - advanced!
Great Facility and knowledgeable coaching staff. Everyone is very friendly & helpful, making it a positive place to train and learn.
