Lovely little cafe, tasty freshly prepared meals, courteous staff who gave recommendations and educated opinions of the food, easy to strike up conversation with. There's a stage space in the other room so they must have some evening entertainment from time to time. Quaintly decorated. Clean and plenty of seating. It was a very cozy place to kill time before my business in town. Will definitely go again next time I'm in town.

Great selection of drinks and a decent variety of food options. Free WiFi, friendly staff and a fun atmosphere. Good for studying or coffee dates! There are usually lots of events going on in the evenings, like comedy shows or open mic nights. If I had to complain about something, it would be that Mahtay is almost always crowded.

After moving to Winnipeg, I realized that I definitely took a cool spot like Mahtay for granted. Mahtay is a super comfortable and inviting cafe with lounge furniture, great art, and delicious beverages. The staff are super friendly and it's nice that when you go you always run into someone you know. Open a location in Winnipeg please!

Really cute cafe! I love the atmosphere, it makes me want to just sit there, sip some tea and do some homework. I went to visit my boyfriend perform a song for a class and it had a really nice vibe. There is good parking close to it, free after 6pm!!! So that’s a bonus. It’s easy to get to and at the heart of downtown st Catherine’s. Cozy little spot!

I used to love it here???? I'm hoping it will go back to how it used to be when covid is over but for now the drinks and snacks are good but something was not good about their food. Both me and my fiance couldn't eat it. It wasn't that it wasn't cooked properly because it was cooked fully. So not sure just didnt taste good ???? But if your looking for a good snack and drink it's a great place to go too.

At first glance this place looks like it could be a cool cafe downtown St. Catharines. However things change once you step past the front counter. Poor layout and lighting, bad art, and even worse coffee. It looks like the place has good equipment, but they must have no idea how to use it. The tea is so scorching hot it burns the tea bag upon insertion. I've also heard various things about a cockroach infestation. The only good thing about this place is its location.

This place has a super cool atmosphere and very relaxed vibez. Their drinks are great too; I would recommend the London Fog or the Chi Latte. All age groups hangout here but it's a youthful feeling place. If you're coming here to study or just to hang out or to see the live shows, you won't be disappointed.

Mahtay has so many functions: it's a cafe with excellent drinks, a restaurant with well-prepared food, a live music venue, and a space for a variety of events and activities. Mahtay always has a really great atmosphere with friendly patrons, which makes it a really intimate spot to meet friends and people in the community. The staff are easygoing but helpful, and as an added bonus they seem to care about reducing the amount of waste produced from cups, lids, straws, etc., which is nice to see.

The furniture is pretty run down but nevertheless cozy and well spread out. What it lacks in furniture, is more than made up by extremely friendly staff, delicious food and a casual atmosphere. They even customized a flatbread with additional veggie toppings. Worth a visit if you are in the area and cramming for some good food and service. Will I go there again? Yes for the food.

Mahtay is really a one of kind gem in downtown St. Catharines. There are so many different reasons to go here. If you just wanna go for a hot drink, they have some great original coffee and teas. Their food has the best options, vegan options and gluten free stuff too if you care about that kind of thing. They have this nice fun guy pizza and this other sandwich I can’t remember the name of lol they have some nice local craft beers and make some other mixed drinks. Their events are super cool too. They do a weekly open mic and host other events like poetry slams and salsa nights.

Shortly after he was done talking, he walked past me, and went to go talk to his other colleague. I just walked out at that point. Mahtay hires self entitled people that forget they have a job. Used to come here 3 years ago before it became the cesspool of entitled youth. Shame on mahtay, really did enjoy going here but customers should not have to wait for your workers to finish on the latest work place gossip. C'mon chris.

Came for a quick stop before leaving back to toronto. It's 3min walk from the bus terminal. Great artsy vibe with friendly staff. I had the blueberry fog and oatmeal raisin cookie. The blueberry fog tasted amazing. It's London fog but with their blueberry Rooibos tea. I would categorize it into the sweet drinks section as it also contains vanilla. The oatmeal raisin is average and a bit of oily. Recommend their specialty teas/coffee for sure!

Inside, this place is warm and welcoming for everyone. Good food, good drinks, happy staff. But if if you use a mobility device, it is going to be a challenge getting in. There is a semblance of a ramp, but no door opener, and the door is heavy. Bring a friend to open the door. The bathrooms are behind a door that has no opener so I haven't explored the stalls. The staff was helpful getting my order to a table.

This is a small cafe in downtwon St. Catharines - it's a great place to meet people and socialize. There are high tables, low tables, armchairs, sofas, long tables. The selection of teas and coffees are great, and always a good selection of baked goods and basic food. Really cool environment, friendly staff, good coffee, nice pastries, and free WiFi. It's bigger on the inside than it seems from the outside. The staff are super friendly from the moment you walk in, until the moment you step out. The coffee is pretty good and the cookies are awesome (especially the coffee toffee chocolate cookie). The only turn off was the look/cleanliness of the washrooms. It's a cool place to kick back and enjoy a cup of coffee.

Modern coffee shop that serves anything from vegan fare to alcohol. More expensive and lively than your traditional café, the hipster scene might scare off the Java purist. Road warriors looking to work here may find issues with the slow/ spotty WiFi. I wish i could give them ZERO for the horrible customer service. We came at 5:30, which was 30 mins before closing, and she kept telling how she had to clean and close. Even though we told her that we will be sitting in, she gave us the tea in to-go containers while other people had regular coffee and tea mugs. I don’t know how this place has so many reviews, it definitely needs a change in staff. Probably paid ratings.

This just about exactly what I look for in a coffee shop and lounge: Delicious tea and coffee, beer and cocktails, food, an inviting and chill atmosphere, and plenty of places to hang out. Icing on the cake is that Mahtay has community connections, supports great causes, and displays local art. Wifi isn't great, but certainly not the worst so that's my only real complaint. Did not have the food so cannot vouch there.

This is one of my favorite places in the city to go and get coffee! My girlfriend and I made this our spot. They have big comfy couches and chairs, shelves of board games, and walls covered in local artwork that changes constantly. With live music often being played in the background, Mahtay Cafe is the perfect environment to just get lost in for hours with a friend or a good book. Love it!!!

Coffee is strong and a bit pricy at 4.64 for a medium. No small option. Wifi keeps dropping with so many antennas around. And no parking on the main streets. It is 3 to 5 dollars street or private. Both doors were open for air circulation as the day was hot. However, someone smoking by the door channel all the smoke and smell indoors. Mention to Battista, buy they brushed off as nothing 15 minutes and the smell eventually dissipated. Battista try to react, but was just too late and the smell stopped. Is a shame, this place could be better. First yime here, not sure am in town again. Wish there was a cafe rescue. Quick, get John Taffer.

Overall, I really like this place as it has good coffee and a great atmosphere that makes you feel as it's your hangout place to invite friends to enjoy their company with good coffee and some good craft beers. It feels like they're really part of the community. They have a few vegan options, a couple selective baked goods, and maybe one of the best homemade soups I've ever had, which it is too bad it was only a special of the day.. This is not corporate style coffee shop and that is a good thing as I have seen a few comments that slack the service. I have to say I've been here quite a few times since it's a local place to me and I find the service is pretty good overall, occasionally it happens like any other place, they get busy and things happen like the last time we were there (take out breakfast) they actually forgot to put our order in to the kitchen. But, the staff is friendly, this is why I still go to these places when things happen sometimes (it becomes a problem when it's consistent which I have not found at this place). The reason I'm not giving it a five-star is what they call "Best Vegan Breakfast Sandwich In Town". I guess technically it could be if there's no other tofu sandwich in town, lol. My wife and I make these every weekend, I get the fact that we make it tailored to our taste, but that is where lays the problem. The sandwich was pretty tasteless and not very much tofu , specially for the price, so overall the sandwich really needs some work. I will try it again for the reasons I mentioned above as things happen and maybe a bad day, I will adjust my rating if the sandwich turns out to be pretty good. Overall I highly recommend this place.

Everything is just amazing. I’m a tea drinker so i wish their teas were better/stronger but since they are awesome in any other way, I’m not gonna take stars away. They truly deserve 6 stars!

TLDR: Fantastic and unique atmosphere, high quality hot and cold beverage selection, lots of unique events, decent food. One of the most unique and cozy little cafes I've ever had the pleasure to come across. Need a wonderfully little atmosphere to sit down and enjoy some downtime with the accompaniment of fine hot beverages and a selection of healthier pastries? How about the desire to go out and see an improvement show in the middle of this? Or a live band? Or an art exhibition? Depending on the time Mahtay really can offer it all and I highly recommend checking out their calendar for events that may interest you in particular. The biggest hold-up I have from a 5-star review is while the atmosphere and drinks have always been lovely I've never been overly impressed by their gold offerings or quality. It's not bad, but it's nothing to write home about.

Overpriced and not very tasty. A single taco is $4.42 + tax + tip. The flatbread for $9 + tax + tip is an outrage for a bit of pulled pork on what amounts to a piece of pita with sauce and cheddar cheese. Even with some faults in our orders on both days eating there, the staff are all incredibly friendly, polite and accomodating. There is a nice diverse selection for everyone, with fresh ingredients from vegan, to veggie, to their specialised BLT. Desserts here are rich and flavorful. Was meeting people here for an event and really enjoyed the Funguy (mushrooms on garlic white) Pizza that I had. Their hot chocolate wasn't scalding and the large earthenware mug kept it comfortably warm for the time it took to drink it which wasn't long at all. There’s a bunch of board games and large tables to hang out at. The washrooms are the only downside. They are old, cold, and could use more modern facilities. My favourites bits were the organic waste bin and pasta stir sticks. Both great ways to reduce items going into our landfills.

UPDATE: Recently they have added a patio and better seating options. Still a busy place, but definitely easier to find a seat! Pretty good coffee and coffee/tea-style beverages and a great selection of food for any- and everyone (dietary restrictions included!) Really artsy place, always with events going on. The only downfall to this place is that it is always so full of students and other people sitting on their laptops or with their books spread across the table that it can be impossible to find a seat, nevermind a table.

The service is not what is used to be. Was spending an afternoon in the area, stopped in for a glass of wine while getting some work done. After taking my first sip, I came to find a fly in it - ew. I went to the counter to see if the fella coule refresh said drink and he charged me again. (So one for the fly and one for the refreshment). I think I'll have my wine elsewhere. The food is meh. The environment is quite busy/ loud, and the coffee is just about average. Reasons why I continue to go - to support their community engagement. Open mic nights are interesting, too. Perhaps nice to read the paper and have an early morning coffee.

OK place for music, but the room with the stage has linoleum floors and bare walls. It badly needs some acoustic treatment. Was in audience for a klezmer orchestra performance and could hear the echoing off the walls; totally distracting.

Mahtay is a must if you visit or just live in the Niagara region. It's a regular hangout for my friends and I! It's a casual, comfortable place with friendly service, live music, great food and free entertainment (board games, free wi-fi, cards, etc.).

Not impressed. The lady working the cash was quite aloof, she took her time chatting with the other employee, as the line began to appear. I even said hello, and she didn't turn around, but contiued to chat with her male coworker. I inquired about the menu, asking about tea types as it was my second time there. I'm not familiar with the menu, so I asked about the kinds of tea, and she pointed to the sign by the cash without saying anything. Then looked at me as if it was a stupid question. At this point I was debating about walking out, but decided to get a tea as my lunch break was nearly over. I got my tea and went around to the side where I asked for sugar. The girl had told me they don't have sugar, and told me everything I needed was on the counter; pink packets of artificial sweeteners, and some type of soy milk that was not refridgerated, along with natrual cream of some sort. I only wanted a packet of sugar and a bit of milk, however they do not carry it (or had any of it out upon my visit) I felt like they don't tailor to everyone's needs, and are focused only on granting the organic/gluten free/ healthy choices which is a great option, but do have OTHER stuff for people who cannot tolerate those items. I cannot handle soy, due to allergy reasons so I have to be VERY careful to what I ingest. I was hoping they maybe had almond or rice milk, given the style of place they are, but they did not. I ended up taking my tea as it was, with no milk or sugar. I dislike this cafe. I have gone here twice now, and each time I walk in I feel uncomfortable. There are young students / young adults sitting around all with their faces in their computers, phones, music, etc. No one is talking or pleasantly conversing with anyone but themselves. The staff are rude, and expect you to KNOW and already be AWARE of the menu choices, and answering any question seems to be difficult for them. The food there is quite overpriced in my opinion. My last visit I bought a brownie that was very stale, like it had been sitting in the display case for the entire day. I never bothered taking it back because it's not worth the trip back there. I'm a young adult myself, and being 25 years old, I'm not all into this hipster / alternative theme or style this cafe has. It's dreary, dimly lit and the decor is really lacking. My personal opinion: If you enjoy a friendly, welcoming, cozy environment do NOT go here. It's a popular young people hangout, and a very cold, distant setting. I will not be returning.

Lovely café. A community landmark that's just perfect for sitting and relaxing, or doing homework. Lots of events and live music year-round. Have a craft beer and play some board games, or try some Yerba Maté, a South American super-caffeinated hot tea in a gourd that's the café's namesake.

Went there on a Thursday night when they have open mic event every week. They can increase the items on the menu which can make this place more desirable. Good enough for a cafe, but some addition of finger food can go good with beer or wine. The event area is good enough to hold small parties. Really liked the staff and their service. Will visit again on a open mic or other event

Stopped in for lunch, they have a sandwich and salad special. Both were tasty, but the coffee was off a bit. They have some local craft beer on tap and offer growlers. A large calendar by the entrance suggests they have live music in the evenings.

This is a coffee shop with a large selection of lunch, snack and desert items available. The food is freshly made and healthy. There are frequent live music performances and other special events. It's a popular spot with the art students and theatre-going crowd. Open late. There is a separate room for some of the special events, such as choir practice. The walls display works by local artists, many available to purchase. There is free WiFi and a lounge area with couches and armchairs. Reasonable prices and a casual atmosphere.

Very comfortable and well designed cafe. Lounge area can fill up very quickly, but there is seating all throughout. Baristas also have great personality, take time making good coffee. And they also have unique specialty lattes and snacks. Some menu items can get a little pricey and stand up to Starbucks pricing, but being a local business I have no issue supporting that.

Great vegan and vegetarian menu choices, I had crepes for breakfast there one time they were the best crepes I ever had. They also have great meat selections for a meal. The ambiance is awesome, they have intimate couch settings that are private and can be romantic. Anytime I walk by there I see people working on their laptops. It's a great downtown location and their lunch menu is off the chain. Also it's very affordable and you can grab a quick muffin and drink on the fly. I highly recommend Mahtay Cafe
