The food was delicious, the service was lovely

Great service, beautiful view in the back room, delicious food!

Fish was fresh but had obviously been fried in oil that was too cold, resulting in a thickly-battered, soggy mess. Freezing inside with unhygienic bathrooms. Two piece halibut and chips for two people with a tip cost us nearly $50. No thanks. Not worth it.

Had lunch at Smile’s and it was excellent. Best fish and chips we had in many years. Decent prices too.

Best Halibut fish and chips in town. Excellent service. Always stop here when we go to town.

Awesome fish. Great service.

Smiles was great! It was empty when we arrived around 7pm, which make us second guess our choice. However, I am glad that we went. Our waitress was great! She was able to deal with our allergies such as gluten and tomatoes. She even excluded the croutons from the ceaser salad without us having to ask, which never happens. For my meal, it usually came with seafood sauce which I am unable to eat. Without having to ask, or to my knowledge before hand she switched it out to tater sauce for no extra cost. Which never happens. Overall, our group of 8 people all had a really great experience.

One of our PR fav stops, Try the Viet coffee - so addicting and delicious. Can't find anything like that in Terrace. Love the location and servers are always nice. Highly recommended

Don’t waste your time, very disappointing, ordered Poached Halibut Cheeks and it was all from a frozen dinner meal, not what I excpect from an Ocean side restaurant and a $30 meal , I had eaten here 20 years ago and it was so much better.

They have a delicious cod and chips

This place is funky to say the least. You’re pretty much hanging over the water in a little house. When you walk in the floors are uneven and it makes you feel like you’re on a boat.. very authentic. But don’t let this little shack scare you away, the seafood is bomb. I ordered the seafood platter(mussels, clams, salmon, cod, deep fried oyster) everything was cooked to my liking, expect the salmon. My friends got the salmon as well and theirs was great. Caesar was nice and spicy. WATCH YOUR HEAD WHEN YOU ENTER THE WASHROOM.. 3/4 of my group did not.

A local told us that Smile's was a greasy spoon that served huge portions and they recommended somewhere else. Fact was that we were all up in that "lets have lotsa seafood " and so my wife and I walked in and ordered the Trio special. It was a very warm day for Prince Rupert and so we also ordered two floats to drink. Red Snapper, prawns, scallops and homemade fries. We were extremely satisfied when we walked out, Highly recommend Smiles if your hungry, love seafood and don't always listen to the locals ;)

Friendly staff, fast service , excellent food

The cod and prawns were amazing

The cod and chips with a prawn appetizer to start.....2 thumbs up. Awesome food.

Food is quite good and cheap considering the variety and quality, I'm an oyster guy and have to say they have very good panfried oysters and the oyster burger is quite good as well. The fish and chips while a tad on the expensive side is well worth it for the quality.

Nice cozy and authentic place managed by Mai and husband . Delicious seafood . Very affordable and great portions and presentation. Fully licensed . Gentle and fast service .... a must for visiting in Prince Rupert . Great culinary . Please also try the deep fried ice cream !!!

Good food, came here many times as a kid 50 years ago..

The food is slightly high price but you get what you pay for, good food. Free coffee refills with food order.

bad choice of beer but exellent food, especialy the salmon

Good Vietnamese coffee. Great service

for breakfest, i would recommand another coffee : we're the only 2 costumers, no service at all, had to go to the table the owners were talking at to get glasses of water, forgot to bring the coffee (plus they only have regular coffee) not smiley at all for a smiles restaurant, at least, the food was ok but i tought it would be more warmfull than commercial...

It was a solid meh. Food was not something to shout about. We both had the fish and chips (halibut). It was good but again nothing spectacular. Service was ok but there was only 1 lady serving.

Great food and we were waited on by the owner and she couldn't have been any sweeter!

Great menu with lots of good food.

Decent food and pricing.

Lovely little gem.

Very fresh, large portions. Was able to have a few things from the menu even with my allergies.

Cozy place.. The staff are different each time I go in sometimes their awesome sometimes their no good

I've been visiting this restaurant for probably 20 years with my family now, if not more. It's sad to see how far it has gone downhill - and my most recent visit may be my last. Service and cleanliness were minimal, and to cap it off, my girlfriend ended her day with her head over the toilet due to food poisoning. I'd give one star, but the nostalgia won't let me.

Enjoyed the food.

This is the first review I've ever written on a restaurant. Hands down the worst service I've ever had the food was pretty good but when we decided to spring for desert the waitress ignored us we tried to wave her over and I actually tried to talk to her while she cleaned the table beside us and she just kept walking. The girl I was with this was her first time to prince rupert and I talked this place up saying she needed to try this place...... suffice to say that won't happen again

Lovely little spot, on the waterfront.

Good meal nice ser

I mean, the food is great most of the time, or at least it was several years ago, but the service seemed kind of hit-or-miss. Slow and expensive. Wouldn't really be my top choice for food in town.

We had a great meal and friendly service

Best food and service, the prices of food is reasonable.

slightly overpriced. Less seafood on the menu than the name suggests

don't go waste of time and money

Damn delicious and great service!

A good place for a quick meal. Food is good and reasonably priced.

Great food and atmosphere!

Always one of my favourite spots to stop when I visit Prince Rupert

Good food

What you'd expect from a fish'n'chip diner. Cheap and cheerful as the Irish say

Great place for breakfast, fish and chips and milkshakes!

Good service but the fish and chips were extremely oily. The fish piece was very small and lathered with a thick layer of batter to conceal its size, every bite was mostly a mouthful of oily batter. The salad was just cut lettuce...

Understaffed was good though

My favorite dish at Smiles. Always great and fast service. Mai talks to every table she has.

Great service and great seafood plates

Awesome food. Best fish and chips I have had so far.

Food was very good

Food is below average. I ordered an iced tea and got a can of Nestea. Chowder is extremely bland... 3/10. Halibut was extremely unimpressive. Prices are overpriced. Fries were okay. Service was not intentionally rude but very hands-off. The obviously bagged salad was the best part of the meal. I've had worse meals but this restaurant makes it hard to remember when.

Enjoyed the quaint seaside atmosphere, though sadly our group couldn't all sit together. Food was ok. Was a bit pricey.

Try the fish and chips

It's as cold as Winter in there My Onion Rings got cold frozen

Very pleasant old diner atmosphere and the Vietnamese part of the menu was excellent.

The owners are delightful. They are very good about social distancing and cleanliness. The food was good. Halibut was a little dry, but steak and lobster was amazing

Good fish and chips. Always great service.

Great seafood

Fast service, fresh and good seafood! Will make sure to stop here again next time I'm in town!

Awesomeness

Good food

It's absolutely nothing like the picture

Always excellent!

Ridiculously over-priced for poor quality food and unfriendly service. Don’t waste your time or money!

The meal's were great and the waitress was awesome

Good food

Good food.

A bit janky, unfriendly service, everything deep fried.

The best chowder I’ve ever tasted. Quick service, friendly and well priced. Will be going back tomorrow….!

Honestly probably the worst meal I have had for a very long time. Smiles Cafe charge top end prices but deliver pre frozen fish and chips that have enough batter on them to feed an army. All four meals my family ordered were terrible. The service was ordinary and the asian owners of this place are obviously trading on the cafes history and delivery the cheapest possible food to its customers. I dont usually write reviews but felt compelled this time as the place was terrible.

Always the best fiss and chips!

Rude

The restaurant itself is dated, but everything we ordered was good. Quick service, really good clam chowder. Fries were good too, and we had apple crumble & ice cream for dessert. It was yummy.

Worst service ever. I asked for water and the waitress rolled her eyes at me. Food was ok but not worth the terrible attitude.

To much batter and to much $$$

Not really impressed. The Café seems to lean on it's history and location more than quality served up today. Salad is a serving of salad leaf coverd with parmesean cheese, a handful of croutons and plastic single serve dressings. Fish and chips was more (tasteless) batter than fish. When asked about the serving size in relation to price the reaction was dismissive and related to the price of fish. Best plate on the table was the BLT.

Interesting little place very quaint food is very good and lovingly prepared, larger portions and better quality than their competitors, service was a little abrupt but I believe this was more due to English skills than rudeness, it was still attentive and swift and obviously with the purpose of my comfort and enjoyment of my meal. The place is family owned and not a huge corporate chain so I’m happy to patronize places like this that are the true fabric of the community, I love the dedication to local history displayed by the numerous photographs displayed throughout the restaurant it results in a very warm comfortable atmosphere that adds to the dining experience, the numerous customers all seem to truly enjoy their experience and I could help but to enjoy the positive energy generated by this place. One of the most pleasant dining experiences I’ve had in this region.

Good food sh and chips good customer service

Very large 2 piece cod and frys bring your appetite, very good.

(Translated) Service very fast, friendly. The food was fried and everything tasted the same. Renovation needed. (Original) Bedienung sehr schnell, freundlich. Essen war alles frittiert sckmeckte alles gleich. Renovierung erforderlich.

Great food.

Well priced and good food. Boy do the staff ever work hard. Locals galore so food is good all the time.

Halibut Fish and chips were excellent. Good portion size and nice fresh side salad. Fast service.

Best fish an chips in town.

Reasonably good food... Good service ... Good feeling atmosphere

Came from Terrace to eat here. Got mixed views from friends and family. We found that everything was battered and of course had a very battered and fried taste. If you're coming here to taste seafood, I would suggest somewhere else. Spent $50+ on basically $10 worth of seafood. Good luck!

Best halibut & chips! Delicious pan seared oysters and scallops! ???? Wish we could have tried everything, the chowder, fish burgers and salmon were getting rave reviews from customers at the other tables and looked amazing!

Don't waste your money! Ridiculous prices for okay food (Joey's Only is better!), mediocre service. No kids menu. Paid $90 for lunch! We won't ever be back. The only reason it's a 1 star rating is because zero isn't an option!

Absolutely the worst crab I’ve ever had. Old taste. Probably brought in frozen. Advertised as king crab. Should have gone to Dolly’s for fresh dungeness in the tank. My wife’s halibut was tasteless and extremely dry. Never again.

great deep fried fish and chips but everything is deep fried.

Great fish & chips!

we were very disappointed. We were told of the days special which was cod, salmon, prawns, scallops and oyster. We travelled to Prince Rupert and with the expectation of getting a seafood meal of excellence and what a surprize. This meal was probably ingredients taken from Costco type packaging, deep fried and served with the exception of the cod and salmon which were probably taken out of factory packages and warmed according to factory instructions. We expected real cooking and got amature preparation. We went to a nearby cafe the following evening and were delighted with the excellent results Smilies has been a long standing business and riding on an old good reputation and presently a bad act

(Translated) It was a really nice ambience, the king grab was delicious and the service top (Original) wa ein echt schönes ambiente, die king grab war sehr lecker und der service top

Frozen Atlantic cod small over cooked over battered portions. Typical of Oriental restaurants across Canada. Much better choices around and expensive for poor quality.

Fresh sea food, family friendly. Great food.

Aversge

Its like stepping back into time.

The fish and chips are just excellent. My go to fish and chip place in Rupert.

Good fish and chips

Great place ,great service and I like the step back into time photos my go to restaurant when I come to prince rupert stay open thanks .

Old time restaurant.

Our group of three adults just experienced the most disgusting meal imaginable at Smiles Seafood Cafe in Prince Rupert. We each ordered halibut and chips....what we each received was a pathetic, inedible serving of wafer thin slices of soggy, pre-frozen fish covered with a 1/2 inch coating of oil saturated batter. The chips were just as bad. Folks...we were unable to eat the food...it was the worst meal imaginable. My advice would be to steer clear of this establishment. The current Smiles Seafood Cafe is clearly a place to avoid.

Awesome burgers

Always a hometown favorite

I’ve been here a few times and each time I’ve been ( a spread of 3 years), it has been a great experience. This is a ocean front town and a tourist attraction. I am always expecting to pay a little more for the meals. It is great food and will always come back. When I find out I’m coming back through town I always make a plan to sit amd have a meal. I sleep better knowing I’m coming here. As a matter of fact I’m arriving next week so it will be about 5 times that I’ve been and plan to return for as long as it remains open. Thank you for the great food and service. If people don’t like it here I would say something is wrong with them not the food.

Wong's Scotish Meat Pies. Had some great Viet cuisine.

Very tasty meal ,very good services, and good price

NOT impressed with the fish and chips! The batter was way too thick and soaked up too much grease. The fish was crispy on the outside but soggy, greasy batter inside. The chips were very good though, no complaints there. Waitress was friendly. The restaurant is freezing cold, the building and windows need updating for sure. There's a bad draft in there.

Nice spot for some fish and chips in cow bay area of PR.

Deserves a higher rating, this is one if the best seafood restaurants I've been to, quantity and quality.

The food was excellent, really busy due to short staff , but all the restaurants are having trouble with short staff , so its to be expected. Highly recommend having some seafood chowder here

My wife and i went there and they refuse to seat use because there was only my wife and I, we were celebrating our 47 wedding anniversary. The reason because where we wanted to was a table for six, the only table in the restaurant.

Only for the decor. Owner was not very personable in the beginning. Cream clam chowder was good, but the shrimp sandwich, no seasoning just a bit of mayo, lettuce your typical frozen shrimp from Thailand and some bread. Shrimp salad, on romaine and some dressing. No bacon no croutons no parmesan. Poutine, just packaged gravy with cheddar cheese. Should of got the fish and chips. smh

Very hot inside, very small. Good customer service. But restaurant could use some updating. Food overall was ok....i was really hoping for some good seafood visiting Rupert...

The food is all greasy. All store bought deep fried frozen pre cooked.

Friendly staff.

I thought the food was great!

The seafood was great and reasonably priced. Outdated decor and average service. Overall good experience.

Awesome clam chowder. You'd have a hard time finding any better, anywhere. ????

Its good

Always fantastic when we come to Prince Rupert!!

Very good fish and chips, everything fresh. Good service. Restaurant is not fancy, more like an old cafe.

Your basic fried fish and chips, nothing fancy, but good food. New owners also have some chinese food on the menu.

Good food

the service here is not great for wheelchairs because of one person's experience by the owner freaking out on the customer in the wheelchair and the people that this person was with left.

Very good place to eat clean net and tidy just love there food

The food is generally great, the atmosphere and building neens an upgrade

Excellent food and good service

Must be new owners as chinese and some seafood options. Not as it use to be.mosty seafood

The waitress, whom I presume was part owner was very nice and the food was a delight, we had the halibut and it was perfectly cooked. I'll eat there again.

The restaurant oozes history. Pictures on the walls dating back to the 1940's. Great menu and cooked to the way you request it. Hb

Would not go back

Fish and chips was pretty good

Expensive, but worth it. Try not to sit near the door. For as it is windy in PR. Recommend this stop for your seafood fix.

Great food and friendly staff

Good food, good service, friendly staff

If you love seafood I highly recommend this place , pricy but worth it. ????
