REVIEWS OF Merchants Of Green Coffee IN Ontario

Alex Szalma

I'm sure this place is normally good as I went here based on a friend's glowing recommendation, but unfortunately the espresso machine was broken and supposedly has been for a while. The drip coffee that was available was decent. I also think that if the espresso machine is broken it'd be prudent to update the menu list so that customers don't stand back trying to decide what to buy and then be told that all espresso options are unavailable. Updated due to owner reply: I appreciate the response, and know that I understand the circumstances and fully sympathize with the confusion and compromises in the industry. I will definitely go back because, again, I have heard only good things about your business.

Okay!!! They selling the best hand drip coffee in Canada. I visited all big 10 city in Canada and lived in 3 Canadian major cities. Never able to find better hand drip coffee. (For me) Never mind drive 30min to the coffee shop just for a cup of coffee. (Okay I buy beans too) $3 coffee will make your day. I didn't put any review last few years because I didn't want this coffee shop get too busy but feels like it's already popular.

Ricardo O'Donell

Great spot for coffee and a small treat. I had the broccoli and cheese scone and it was delicious, it had a nice crust on it. There is plenty of space and enough small tables.

Paul Kounine

Was an interesting place, but now that I can't bring my dog into the shop, it's no longer worth the downsides.

Great spot for a coffee. Good wifi and a nice little green space down the side if you want to sit outside. Good wifi!

Robert Medeiros

Tasty mochas and gluten-free brownies on offer. I will echo other reviewers and mention the space, which has a casual, Bohemian vibe happening, and plenty of light.

Joshua

It's a very cozy place to go and relax and have a great cup of coffee or tea. They have a large selection of drinks to choose from and their coffee beans are very well priced. I love nowhere near this place and I still drive down just to get my beans. I love their coffee!

It’s so nice there! Feels cozy, communal. Very friendly staff, unique coffee options. We sat near the banana tree and loved it.

I had a cashew milk latte and cheese scone. The cheese scone was delicious! However when I got my latte, it was extremely hot, and when I sipped it, it tasted like burnt plastic. I think the cashew milk was steamed too hot and it was burned. Usually cashew milk has a creamy texture but the texture was watery as well. I couldn’t finish the latte at all, it actually tasted horrible :(

Court Gibson

Looks neat, never been. I get asked to review it up to ten times a day because Google doesn't recognise my home address on my phone. Hoping this helps.

Manar Aljahmi

A very unique cozy cafe! Seriously, it's so lovely for reading and working or ever relaxing!

Natural interior and comfy atmosphere. This cafe is on my list anytime. One of my regret is there hasn't ice coffee menu.

Danielle De Vera

I’m not much of a coffee person but their tea and pastries are good, even if they’re a bit steep in price. What I really love though is the space. Such a rustic and serene feel with creaky wooden floors and exposed brick walls. It’s pretty accessible, being a few minutes walk off of Queen St. E but if you don’t live downtown and need to take the subway, it’s quite a ways away from the closest station. I live in Scarborough it’s a mission for me to get here, it’s really worth it though!

Susan Soares

Nicholas La Roux

Easily some of the best coffee I've ever had. Super chill, cool, open space. Definitely recommend coming here if you're on the east side.

Daniel A. Cooper

Just off the beaten path is some of the best fair trade coffee (and tea!) you'll find in the city. The place has potted coffee plants and other greenery! Gotta love that.

Lovely out of the way spot. I LOVE the fact that the music is just lightly in the background and I'm not being bombarded with hipster tunes. I can hear myself think while getting a bit of work done. Oh, and great coffee!

I am very disappointed because I drove 40 minutes on my day off to come down have some coffee, food with a primary goal of getting some work done and they were closed for a movie shoot and will be for the rest of the week. I got a “sorry”. I’m very disappointed, they should update their hours on Google for these types of events. I was told it’s on the website however I came down based on Google reviews. Not cool.

Very strong coffee, brownies are way too salty and don't taste good. The place is very nice inside and has a lot of space, perfect for study and meeting for a hour. At least they have different kinds of coffee beans available, but i would like to see them offer customer which one they want &/or suggest whatever fits their taste. Sadly, right now they choose one of the strongest beans available, and make coffee with it for everyone.

Fav coffee spot in the city whether I'm able to find a spot or not. The quality of coffee is second to none and combined with the friendly service and inviting atmosphere it will always be a place close to my heart

Delicious and friendly! My favorite coffee shop in Toronto

Wow, what a hidden gem! Just off of queen east in the east end, this is a little hidden oasis. It was hustling and bustling on a rainy Sunday, but there's lots of seating and table space so I managed to find a spot to sit for a couple of hours and read my book. Service was lovely as well! Would definitely come back if I'm looking to find somewhere to be productive or to relax.

Chris Gauvin

Love Merchants! Still open during the current lockdown for whole bean pickup. Missed out on Joe Bold this visit but plenty of great options.

Melissa Rabi

Anyone who loves coffee should come here. Even though their seating isn't yet open it's still great to come and grab some beans when I'm around the area. Highly recommend their Ethiopian and Honduras beans

Never been to the cafe however had a really bad experience with the staff at their Saturday St. Lawrence market table. The brunette fellow was super cocky and rude. His feet were up on the table as he continually slammed me for not knowing about coffee and stating I was allergic to it. I was simply trying to purchase some for my partner. He seemed very irritable and snappy. It was truly shocking. What a poor representative of this brand because it seems like something I'd totally support. Hint to owner, get rid of this zero! He's killing your business.

Merchants of Green Coffee has an excellent warehouse-style cafe in Leslieville. The air is often filled with the smell of freshly roasted coffee, and it's a popular place on weekends. The coffees served are excellent, and there's typically a small (but good) selection of baked goods as well. Highly recommended as a pleasant place to sit and read or chat. MCG offers a series of events where customers can learn more about coffee. I attended Coffee 101 last weekend. Unfortunately it was a disappointment. Although advertised as a workshop, it was just a lecture (with an audience of 80 people) that included a mug of coffee. Also, the event resembled an infomercial at times, even though there was a $25 admission fee.

Chinmaya Madan

Joelle Cout

Best place for organic and fair trade coffee. So many choices, simply delicious.

TK Hogg

Quaint, and so comfortable. A go to place in the SOHO of Toronto, Riverside 2016.

Kaylee Miller

Always a great vibe in here. Work, chat, study, read - it’s the best cafe for it all.

ali omrani

Very nice environment. Everything else was just a miss. Walked in wanting to sit and have a coffee but every seat was taken--generally by someone with a laptop and an empty mug. Consequently I decided to get my drink to go. While placing my order I was informed that I'd have to pay 25 cents more for a to-go cup because then "you'll reconsider next time." My only response to this is, I'm not sure what there is for me to reconsider except leaving next time without ordering since there was no where to sit. After that, they forgot my order until I asked what happened with my drink. Worst of all, it the drink was so bitter I couldn't even finish it. I see many great reviews and was expecting a great experience. Sadly this didn't happen in my case.

Mike Hakomaki

Great spot for coffee overlooking the city. Learn about rotating your own beans from the friendly staff.

David Bird

This is the place where I learned to love coffee. I've been a member since 2000 and Merchants of Green Coffee is my primary source for green coffee beans and roasting equipment. From time to time I also like to relax at their cafe: a comfortable and friendly place with excellent staff.

Alex Rykhva

Excellent place to have a sip of coffee and spend few hours reading/working.

Maurice C

Very very good place for coffee. Free WiFi can get a bit slow if there are too many people using it. Great place to study or hang out in a group.

Matthew Lai

My favourite weekly stop to get fresh beans for the week

Marcel Gort

The best beans at reasonable prices.

Sarah Pottle

This is the best coffee in the city… that is so difficult to buy. It’s such a shame, because these beans are delicious, but you will waste so much of your time trying to spend money here. I gather from their voicemail that hours of operation are subject to change daily. I checked socials as they suggest, but they still weren’t open as scheduled. Are they out of business?

Joseph Marcinek

Hidden gem. Great space over looking the Don Valley. Excellent coffee, beans, roasting options. Can even buy raw/green beans if that's your thing. Enjoy!

Luke Morrison

Love there staff. Great coffee. Just wish they had bullet proof coffee on the menu.

Michael Mikhaiel

Ian Garmaise

Great coffee and lovely space. They roast their own beans which you can purchase.

The Friendly and hilarious Dan (I think) plus the vintage decor, tasty coffees and gluten free/vegan friendly baked good options make this a favorite for me for getting work done in a warm and inviting space or just to chat with a friend.

Great location, charming interior ???????? The coffee beeing served, IMHO definitly not the best in town. At least for my taste!! A little to dark/bitter of a roast..may have been the chosen espresso tho. All in all good experience and worth a try!

Also responding to the rather nasty review of 'the brunette fellow' at the St Lawrence market. I too have been buying coffee from Anthony for years . He is ALWAYS courteous, addresses me by name, knows my order without me asking, and is nothing like the person described in the review. I’ve learned lots from Anthony about high-elevation, arabica, Fair Trade and Organic beans. He is an asset to Merchant of green coffee and is one of the reasons why I’ll continue to shop there regularly.

Yousaf Khan

A large and open space, board games, live bands (check ahead), and awesome Java make this a great place to escape the hustle of the City.

A really nice open conception cafe with plenty of tables and seating. They are currently undergoing construction but it’s still enjoyable to go. The atmosphere is really nice, great huge windows, and not aggressive music blaring or anything. They also offer coffee beans to take home and some food and snacks to enjoy there.

Landon Knight

Best best BEST place for truly FRESH HEALTHY COFFEE! PERIOD!!!

Mina Tawadrous

One of the most "cozy" coffee spots in Toronto. Staff, coffee and environment is great. Only downside is their lack of A/C and sometimes the lack of seating.

M Dhahri

This is my favorite coffee shop around the city, perhaps the best ever. Friendly and knowledgeable staff; spacious, cozy chairs and couches; variety of single origin and blend coffee beans; variety of good music, not too loud, not repetitive. Good internet speed, excellent ĺave to do work or study. If you hate air conditioning like me then this is your place to go, windows and garage door are open for ventilation the place rarely gets warm. If there is a down side in this place it's their food selection which is quite limited, although everything is freshly baked in house.

Jason Sauernheimer

Hands down the best place we've found for coffee in the city so far!. Great ambiance, fantastic coffee, delicious scones & muffins made right on the premises. Definitely a relaxed pace, which we love.

Mike de Raaf

Really nice space with good coffee.

m kozar

never mind the best tasting... these people pick the socially and environmentally superior beans, fresh roast them, spend an hour or more (up to you) educating you about coffee, use local roasters... they do more for and with the coffee than any company I know of in Toronto, or Canada!! Good on MGC!

Damian Kindler

Michael steelman

I am updating my review from a 5 to a 1 star.... everytime I have gone here in the last few months they always have an excuse as to why they can't make a coffee.... this is your job. I was forgiving the first few times but seriously after buying from you guys for the last few years im done. Apparently making a latte is to difficul for you. I use to love merchants of green I supported local. Now I'll never go back this place is an embarrassment.

Great coffee, and they always baking something that smells amazing so you’ll want to get a snack as well. Last time I was there they were baking vegan s’mores cookies which were delicious! There are lots of tables to work at and lots of natural light coming into the space. I went on a weekday in the afternoon and it wasn’t very busy. Good WiFi as well, so a great place to perch for a few hours and get some work done.

Do not book an event here! Last year Merchants of Green Coffee cancelled my wedding reception 48 hours before the event!! (due to a double booking) They are disorganized, don’t own a scheduling computer, and have a high turnover rate of employees. They didn’t even realize they double booked us until the other party got in touch with them to confirm details, and this is after giving a deposit and signing a contract 6 months previously, and then planning details with them for months ahead of time. It was a traumatic event and definitely put a lot of stress on an already stressful situation. I do not plan to return there, ever.

Anne Brittaln

After many years of happily buying MoG Coffee at St Lawrence Market on Saturdays from Anthony (the 'brunette' that Sam did not like), I had a very poor service and experience from the couple working on November 18th there. I brought a used MoGC small bag for re-use as I usually do, and asked for my usual 1/4 lb Joe Bold ground for stove-top espresso. The guy had to look up the setting and complained about the older reuse bag, and the gal gave me the wrong change from a $20 bill . While I pointed out it was only $4 not $8 for 1/4 lb - my spouse put away the bag handed back. Next morning I took out the coffee bag and it was so light I weighed it - only 1.5 ounces, not 4 ounces! Obviously the other 2.5 ounces were left in the grinder. I found a new supplier for my coffee and ground my own. When I took back the very underweight bag of coffee to the stand in the market on Sat Nov 25th I was pleased to see Anthony again, and explained the problem. I would not buy the coffee or have it ground there by people who do not know what they are doing, as the couple did not. When there is an experienced knowledgeable staff, it makes a difference. Until then, Merchants of Green Coffee have lost my business.

ceci c

This café is extremely cozy in a warehouse. They offer coffee workshops.

Emaad Paracha

Even though it might be a tough to find it at first, the coffee here makes that little treasure hunt worth it. There were a lot of places to sit and work, and they didn't have super loud music playing either. The only drawback for me was they didn't have a lot of places with power outlets, and for someone who comes and works that could be a problem. Otherwise come here for a good conversation over amazing coffee!

Chris

Kind staff. Solid wifi.

The store front is cozy and welcoming, the drinks brewed fresh and to the quantity you need and the atmosphere is rustic. The product is fantastic, and priced decently. I'd recommend you pick up some whole beans here if you like to grind and make your own mixes.

Great atmosphere and space (wonderful ambience and neat decor). Friendly, helpful staff. Solid offerings.

Delicious fair trade coffee with freshly baked goods from a green business. They have a wide variety of beans that they roast in site and specialty drinks. All coffee is fresh. This is one of the best spots in Toronto. Plenty of outlets if you are using a laptop, lots of people reading or chatting. Super friendly vibe in a quiet part of a busy area. Love it!!!!

Coffee is advertised as fair trade and organic but there is zero certified proof of that. The ethics here might be just for show. Baristas also seem to come and go so quickly, can’t be a good sign

the best beans in town! even though they don't serve beverages during the lockdown, their shop is open - and they offer a selection of green and roasted beans (which can be ground upon request). the prices are very reasonable ($16 per pound for roasted beans, less for green) which is a really great value considering the amazing quality and freshness! so far I got Guatemala and Columbia and this is the best coffee I've had in a long time!!!!!

To open the front door you may have to kick it. I believe this should be a good indicator of the easy ambiance of the place. Loved it.

Friends of ours introduced us to green beans and home roasting. Yirgacheff or sidamo if the other isn't around and we didn't order ahead is our standby. Nice space and nice loft that we had used for Lindy Hop lessons too. Looking forward to post covid19 use of it.

John Peters

Picked my coffee from a selection of 4 types of roasts. Best coffee I've had in a long long time. Very cute location. It was pretty busy when I was there so it took the barristas a little long. But the flavor of the coffee was so good, it was worth the wait.

Robert Burke

Great coffee, great atmos.

Really one of the best underrated gems of coffeedom in Toronto. Also cat.

Hands down the slowest internet speeds in the city. Even struggling to post this review. If you're looking to get any work done, go to a Starbucks.

(Translated) One of the best in Toronto! There is an impressive variety of coffee beans (roasted or not). The atmosphere is warm and the coffees are carefully prepared by the baristas. (Original) L'un des meilleurs de Toronto! Il y a une variété impressionnante de café en grain (torréfié ou non). L'ambiance est chaleureusement et les cafés sont préparés avec soins par les baristas.

Merchants of Green Coffee is a unique business that is truly making a difference in the way coffee is served, grown and delivered. Not only it is the best coffee I have ever tried, this company does it in a forward looking and sustainable way. I am not buying coffee anywhere else but them!

DONT BUY ONLINE FROM THEIR WEBSITE.. WORST CUSTOMER SERVICE & EXPERIENCE...! I have been following up with them for my online order which I placed from mid July 2021 over emails & leaving voicemails on their business line but no courtesy to respond or provide ETA/ refund. What a hidden gem! You can actually watch the process of turning green beans, into roasted beans, and then grinding those beans up for coffee use! The scones here are to DIE FOR! Savoury and sweet options are both phenomenal. The seating is an eclectic collection of various wooden tables and chairs. Very open concept and rustic design. Just love it!

Patrick O'Neill

Responding to the rather nasty review of 'the brunette fellow' at the St Lawrence market. I've been buying coffee from Anthony for years and have had only the best experience with his knowledge and courtesy. Moreover, I've been playing music beside his booth for 2 -3 hours on most Saturdays for the past couple of years and have never seen anything resembling this 'report.' He knows all of his repeat customers, many by name, is always willing to explain the qualities and differences of the coffees and is patient with naive questions (how does the green coffee taste?). I simply do not recognize the person described in this review — it is harmful and alarming!

Okay. I don’t even want to write a good review because I want to keep this wonderful cafe all to myself! But I also think hard work deserves to be rewarded. I hope everyone in riverside hits up this cafe at least once. I am a regular here, and use this cafe as my go-to study spot when I don’t want to go to the uni library. STAFF They are SO nice without being sugary/annoying. The staff are absolutely unpretentious and are genuinely interested in educating the customer in an accessible way. I’m not a coffee-connoisseur or anything so it was fun to learn a little during my visits. Baristas are really nice and speedy, and if the drink is going to take a while they’ll let you sit and call you to grab your drinks when they’re ready. AMBIANCE Of course the space itself is just perfect for getting stuff done. Plenty of chargers available all over the space. I’m pretty sure they deserve credit for at least part of my graduate school work lol. Also nice and quiet, as some cafes like to blast the music which makes it impossible to focus or have a decent conversation, but not this one. Their ambiance is what keeps me coming back. CUSTOMER BASE Patrons are also normal, polite, and keep to themselves which I appreciate too. COFFEE & FOOD The scones are amazing. Coffee is delicious because they help you choose a bean that you like! So it’s coffee that suits your taste. Their fair trade and low waste principles have won my heart. I’m a low-waste individual, and their values are what make me recommend them to anyone who will listen. OVERALL The best cafe in Toronto. A true hidden gem. I wish they had another location in Ottawa (I’m moving away). I will miss this place so much. Thank you for the good times.

Do not order anything from Merchants of Green Coffee online. They will cheat you out of your money, waste your time, ignore your emails, and generally treat you like a chump. After ordering 4 lbs. of green coffee on April 29th, and having it not shipped out in a week I sent out an email asking about the status of the order. This is strange, since I paid a $20 Canada Post shipping option, and I live in the same city they are located. It was only after that email that they started processing my order, and told me that they would send it out when possible. I know that things are more difficult during a pandemic, and that lack of staff make daily operations challenging, so I wanted to give them the benefit of the doubt. The next day I received an email saying that they were in the area to deliver another order, and stopped by my apartment to drop off my coffee and also refund some of the Canada Post delivery fee i paid. Since the buzzer for my apartment doesn't work, I couldn't hear them. They also said that they could drop by the next day and deliver my order. I emailed them back, indicating that I would be home the next day, and not to worry about the delivery refund. That was the last email I received from them. They didn't show up the next day, and I was fine with that, thinking that they didn't have any deliveries near me, and it was the weekend. However, repeated emails about their sudden silence went unanswered, as did more emails about if they had actually shipped my order, and requests for a tracking number if they did, and a refund if they didn't. Finally, after many unanswered emails, threatening to go through my bank to get a refund on my order actually prompted them to reply. I'm sure that if I hadn't invoked the banks these dorks would've kept my money and continued to ignore my emails. Unfortunately all I got was a boilerplate email saying my order was refunded. No apology, no culpability on their part, just straight up cowardice and avoidance. This also led me to believe that after two weeks they still hadn't shipped my order, an order which I paid a $20 shipping fee for a delivery in the same city. If you are looking to order green beans in Toronto or Canada, there are much better alternatives. For example, after placing an order with another local green beanery they shipped out the order the same day, and I received it the following day. All this for a much cheaper $7 Canada Post Xpresspost option, as opposed to Merchants vague $20 Canada Post shipping. Calling themselves Merchants of Green Coffee is a misnomer, since they aren't merchants; they're scammers and cowards whose arrogance towards its customers knows no bounds.

Upon entrance, you are greeted by the aroma of freshly grounded coffee beans. They also roast their coffee beans on site. Coffee heaven

Delightful. High on the trendy, hipster scale, but can't mess with good coffee.

Worst customer service ever! I was looking for Forbes Wild Foods, I opened the door and there was a lady about 2.5 metres away behind a plastic shield wearing a mask. Straight away she shouts at me, "you cannot come in with out a mask"(in a tone with an attitude, which she kept using the entire time I was talking to her), I accidentally forgot to put it on after riding my bike there, I apologize and put it on straight away, which took me about 2 seconds. She was still complaining about me not wearing a mask while I was putting it on, so I then say "sorry, I normally wear one, it was an accident, sorry". She then moves on to complaining about me putting my mask on in the doorway instead of going outside to put it on and closing the door. I would of done so if it would of taken me a while to put it on, but I literally took it from my pocket and put it straight on, so I said "why does it matter, I have my mask on now, I forgot I am sorry, I am here to pick up an order". She then very grumpily says "right then" like she was not going to allow me to have the order, then she grumpily asks for my name twice. She then explains, "it is not there, what is it?". So I say it is a maple gift set, then when the penny drops she starts complaining that I came to the wrong place, "you want Forbes". I said "sorry I thought it was Forbes, there is a sign on the door". She then starts complaining they have there own door and she is not there to deal with their customers, I ask " where is the door please" she says "it's not here", like she just wants me to go now. "It is round the side she says", then starts complaining about having to deal with people who are not there to buy from her store, by this point I say "thank you for the attitude, have a nice day", and leave.

Merchants had an eclectic feel. I loved the fact that you can purchase green coffee beans and there are instructions readily available for all kinds of roasters - beginner to advanced. Service was absolutely lovely.

Merchants of Green Coffee is the standard for what coffee can be. The fresh roasted coffee is better than anything else I’ve tried by a significant margin. The staff are passionate about coffee and the cafe is one of my favourite places in the city. Everything about Merchants of Green Coffee is amazing. Highly recommended!

Excellent coffee organic selection and great service.

Love the coffee at Merchants of Green Coffee. We buy their green coffee beans and roast them at home. They are a fair trade and more sustainable business model for coffee. Once covid is over, I highly recommend their workshops. The knowledge shared is mindblowing. It changes your perception and understanding of what a good cup of coffee entails.

Karl Hui

Great selection of coffee, and they staff is really knowledgeable on their coffee blends. Very friendly and cozy there, excellent place to enjoy a cup of coffee in peace!

Key locale for coffee in the east end. Get a pour over.. even if you don't know what it is or why it's a little more expensive. They supply many of the beloved cafes in the city with ethical beans. They were doing co-working spaces long before other co-ops came to town.

Jeff MacKeigan

Go there for the coffee, stick around for the atmosphere and go back to the counter when the scones come out of the oven. Seriously.

Great cafe. The staff, coffee, and food are fantastic. Wonderful environment to catch up on some reading, completing much needed work, or to deep and engaging conversations with friends. One of my favourite coffee spots east of Yonge Street.

Awesome space, and most importantly amazing coffee. You can get a proper cup of coffee, instead of being forced to have an Americano like most of the other Indy coffee joints.

As previous reviews state, great coffee and beans and a great place to go pre covid. I've been a pound a week buyer for 5 yrs now, unfortunately I'll await to what the owner response to this email is before I go back buying from them. It seems Martin Webb in a previous review might have had the same server as I, who's intent it seems to be is ruining the owners business. For the owners reference this happened June 17th 1:37pm. We have not been to the store recently as our neighbors have picked up our beans when they get theirs. When I arrived this time as usual I was prepared to don my mask before entering, instead now there is a serving counter at the front door behind a wall of plexyglass. No problem, I'd just get my beans and go. When the server eventually ambled over she stopped 2 meters short and proceded to berate me not having my mask on. I apologized and said I thought it was ok as I was outdoors and started to put my mask, again no problem. What the problem is that she kept continuing with the berating even though I was being compliant. At this point I interupted and asked "do you want my business?" the response from her was "are you threatening me?" This was my cue to walk away, I was not going to debate what consituted a question or threat or even good customer service. I understand the servers right to ask for a maskand I have no issue with wearing one, her behaviour was unnecessary. Again, I'm interested in what the owner has to say

Had been looking for my favourite coffee online - since the onset of COVID-19, I've been ordering almost everything instead of driving everywhere. My first order arrived in record time - the Joe Bold smells so good I almost wish I could drink it all at once. But I won't - my usual three litres a day will do. I'll be sure to order again - in fact, I'll continue to reduce my carbon footprint even when I can drive, so I'll be ordering regularly - but when COVID blows over, I'll go see these nice people in person.
