Location/decor whimsically whisked us back to 19th century Paris - almost thought I saw Honore de Balzac himself, sitting in the corner, people watching, finding his inspiration, writing feverishly, and pounding back copious cups of coffee...spkg of which, coffees are crafted with pride and style, ingredients/menu is intriguing, prices are decent. Can't wait for next visit.
Great quality coffee, beverages and snacks. Amazing location in the heart of the historic distillery district.

2020.09.06. Balzac is a favorite place for our morning coffee. There are multiple place in the city and The Distillery District location is a nice one. I had my favourite Hot Anericano and sat outside in the sun. A beautiful day to enjoy time with family.
This location is complete chaos when it's busy. No one knows where the line to order is, and everyone waiting to pick up their orders just becomes a disorganized mess of people that blocks anyone new coming through the door and confuses things further. I overheard at least 6 people asking "are you in line?" / "where does the line start?" While waiting for my order. I would strongly suggest adding very clear signage to direct people where, exactly, to go in order to increase efficiency and decrease customer frustration. Aside from that disaster, the coffee and customer service are good! :)
Beautiful location in a historic building, second floor aerie a lovely spot to get away from the crowd for while on weekends. Great coffee.
Cool atmosphere and great coffee. Good vegan cookies
Nice hot drinks, good atmosphere and good service. They need more seating space
Great coffee and splendid decor...tried cappuccino n a friend tried frappe with plain crossaint... everything is perfect...they ask for a tip although it's a self-serve..not a deal breaker though
Loved this place. Beautiful cozy cafe with a quiet cultural ambience. Excellent coffee and the nicest staff. Highly recommended
Enjoyed the fall harvest coffee
Small space, but well organized to keep clients feel safe. Fast and friendly service. Quite a good selection of in-house products for those who want to have their signature coffee and drinks at home. Great selection of sweet-treats as well.
Coffee was good. The atmosphere kept up with the rest of the distillery district and the staff was very friendly.
Lovely cafe in the distillery district, lots of seating upstairs with some gallery space, and the posters of all the other Balzac's are awesome.
It's an ok coffee shop when you're in the area but nothing particularly amazing about the coffee or service.
Cool cozy coffee shop with really great vintage decor. Coffee was great !

Very good! Coffee, Service and Relaxed atmosphere.
Excellent food/drink and the setting is breathtakingly beautiful.
coffee very fresh & very nice space 2 get work done !!!!!
A really fantastic location and great drinks! When we were there they had macadamia nut milk available, which was absolutely delicious. The service is fast and they even had some vegan treats available. Really chill atmosphere for a coffee shop.
A very nice cozy coffee shop in a historic building, quick service, nice interiors (well, maybe not right now) - totally recommended.
Beautiful location and same great coffee and service. Love Balzac's.
Interesting venue with the worst door. Please get some more fans or turn up the AC in there. Good quiet place to talk, study or work for a short while.
It doesn't have that many spots for sitting, but the service was quick and the place is a cozy stop while visiting the Distillery District's Christmas Market. The hot chocolate was nice and they had the veggie option with oat milk. Would definitely visit again.
GORGEOUS. Absolutely stunning atmosphere. Coffee was enjoyable and brownie was very enjoyable.
Enjoyed their coffee and cookies....
Amazing place for coffee. I especially love their Christmas specialty drinks, my favorite is Toasted almond latte. You can ask them to make it even when it's not Christmas season.
Best coffee in Canada. Love the setting, very friendly staff.
Great coffee, good food, slow staff.
Great place for everyone and their dogs ????
They wanted $1 for whip cream on my hot chocolate. Starbucks offers whip cream for free.
One of my fav coffee shops in the city. Great java, good service, and amazing historic building with cool lounge areas and outdoor patio in the summer
Loved the coffee, and enjoyed the design of the place very much. It's definitely worth visiting if you are in the area. I love that you can see the CN tower through the window from the second story seating area.
Great coffee!
This place is special. Highly recommended.
Good coffee, but can get better for the same price.
Mill St. makes one of my fave beers. They also serve nice, unpretentious food. Fun, friendly staff and sampling at the front
Toronto's most famous coffee shop and it's clear to see why. In the hop updated distillery district Balzac's offers and authentic atmosphere with amazing drinks and pastries

Good place to see the Xmas decorations
Visited for the first time and loved the coffee and the decorations and the dessert. Would go again for sure.
An excellent atmosphere with wonderful coffee. Well worth a visit.
I come here sometimes because it's the closet thing available. I think it's just okay for a few reason. I find it strange that if you want a Vanilla Latte, they charge an extra dollar but if you buy the Salted Caramel Latte, they don't charge extra...Why? Also some of the staff seems a bit displeased at times, not sure why, just a vibe. The actual flavour of the coffee is pretty good, so I visit for it, but if there was another option near by, I'm not so sure.
Coffee was good but could do with some cooked food options. Would be a great place for brunch if they added that.
The shop was insanely busy when I arrive but I really enjoyed my coffee and the old building was amazing. Would recommend.
Lovely cafe! Great coffee and desserts, fast service and amazing vibes!
Atticus was so helpful and friendly. They went out of their way to check if there was any seating for me upstairs. Unfortunately there wasn't but I decided to get a drink to go. Atticus helped modify a drink to suit my dietary restrictions and was very pleasant and understanding about it. Friendly service and a delicious drink!
Chai latte is hands down my favourite at Balzacs. For anyone who loves Chai lattes, definitely must try. It's a bit steep at $5, but it's a treat!
Love the atmosphere, coffee is great. Cozy place.
Last time I went there because of the patio . First I saw the lady with the attitude put her finger in my drink when stirring ???? then 5 minutes later we were told they're closing and should leave the patio. Forget the nasty food safety issue but didn't it occur to you to tell people you're closing in 5 minutes??
Had hot apple cider atmosphere is calming and enjoyable seats are also comfy
I bought 5$ worth of drinks here and when i have to go to washroom they dont want you to use it. dogsht cafe rght here
My order was a flat white, milk is not frothed correctly. Not the correct ratio for a flat white. There is barely a coffee taste. Definitely not a speciality place.
Great coffee, but soooo busy at times we have to forego its goodness! That said, their coffee is great. My wife loves it. So do I. It's worth the wait sometimes. And during the Christmas Market in the Distillery, that wait can be long! Great coffee though...
The coffee shop has interesting details. I did not like much the cappuccino I had probably because of the ingredients. Vegans could enjoy more some of the foods and beverages.
I actually haven't had anything from this café but the decor is incredible.
Tasty coffee, but not very wheelchair friendly. The heavy doors open inward making it difficult to get out. I'm not sure why the fire department hasn't forced them to change the orientation the doors open.
Great coffee and muffin.
Cute location. Often very busy. I love to sit on patio or walk around Distillery.
Great spot, loving the matcha here!!
Ordered hot chocolate, a salted caramel and a ginger cookie. The drinks were lukewarm especially the hot chocolate (there was nothing hot about it) and the cookie had a peculiar taster as if made with old flour. When asked to warm the drinks they said they can't do anything about it ! And worse, on the tables they had am framed announcement asking customers to limit their stay to 30 mins! It is understandable that they want to turn the seats but, that is a bit rude to ask customers for a time limit. They can have areas specified for those who stay long using electronics (phones and laptops) and ask those using them to use those areas! I always prefer coffee shops with higher class than chains like Stabucks or T Hortoun but frankly ...chains never ask you to limit your stay and they are more helpful when you complain about their product.
Balzac's is part of a chain, so this place isn't totally cheap. That said, I rated it five stars because of the interior. The place used to be a factory, and as a result, has two floors, one looking down over the other. if you get a seat upstairs, you could easily work in that spot for hours.
Meal type
Can not imagine Distillery District without this place ????
Perfect spot for a coffee and a treat in the distillery. Love sitting upstairs.
If you are looking for cute artsy coffee shop, yoi should comr here. Great date spot. Good view from balcony. They close at 7 on Sunday, reasonably priced.
Secret: Best washrooms in Distillery Balzac’s is a local chain coffee place - coffee is good. Atmosphere in this location is lovely as the whole area is a heritage district with a lot of character and this spot has a nice 2nd floor. But - it’s very small and is rammed in good weather. Go early in the morning or be prepared to wait for a seat. This locations super power is big, accessible clean washrooms. All other washrooms in this area are public, small and not that clean because of high tourist traffic.
Pricey latte with almond milk! Small 7$. Kept me up all night guess it worked. Had a meeting so no choice for that drink glad I tried don’t think I will get again though. Barista was pleasant!
In the cold day, the only cafe that still open at 7/8pm, incredibly warm inside. The Cafe Canadien is fantastic, so does its double espresso
Balzac's Coffee is Canadian owned and operated. The coffee is great, along with the atmosphere. Each location is sutuated in a unique location....with its own special touch. The location at The Distillery has lots of seating and light.
Very friendly staff and great service. They offer quality pastries and beverages. The location is beautiful being in a heritage area and building, there is a lot of character within the building. The upstairs seating is perfect for getting some work done, a wee loud with the chatter but with a solid pair of headphones you can study and get work done for sure! There's a mix of sofa style seats and more upright seats as well, and theres a little nook at the top, ontop of the cash area.
The coffee's mostly amazing, but I got a cup of burnt coffee recently.
Busy cafe but the baristas are proficient in making drinks so that you won't be waiting for a long time. Plenty of seating available on 2 floors plus patio area. It can get loud when it's busy and a lot of pedestrians in the patio area since its not fenced off from The Distillery general shared space.
After roaming around Distillery district I stopped here for coffee ... Coffee was good , seating was good ... Loved the bare brick interior
Overpriced under flavourful coffee for those who are into empty ambience...plus $45.00 canisters that sell for $7.00 at Winners...
Charming atmosphere with nice Java and many choices of warm or cold beverages … lots of tasty and healthy choices
This is a must see place in Toronto and can easily be reached on foot from many of the hotels downtown. Lots of local history about the city and it's love of alcohol and food !! Don't miss it !!
Great vibes, tasty coffee, wifi available, nice indoor and also outdoor sitting :) definitely stop by :)
This old building is phenomenal. The main area has a ~20ft ceiling. The lemonade here is really great, especially if you're hungover.
A cafe for the hipsters? Nice retro/vintage interior with a casual sitting area on the second floor. Their beverages were tasty although a bit on the pricier side. Be aware: it gets really crowded on event nights and you have to wait a while for your orders to come through.
Fantastic coffee. I have recommended this place to so many people.
This Balzac store has vintage interior and very good vibes.
Always great! Memories of the Stratford cafe back in the day....
Situated in a historic building within the Distillery District, this outpost of the Blazac's chain provides an interesting environment to grab a coffee or work for a while. A curated rotation of art is featured on a periodic schedule that are available for purchase. Coffees are well prepared and staff are friendly. The upstairs seating area, though not wheelchair accessible, is a delightful place to enjoy a cup and have a conversation.
Lovely coffee shop with tasty flat white. The shop has a unique interior design inherited from the history of Toronto Distillery District. Staff on the day of my visit was nice and friendly. I spent an hour sipping my coffee and pondering on the overlooking loft. It’s a great experience.
Drip coffee medium roast is the best ✨
Beautiful location and design! Building still has a lot of the original look!
Great coffee!
Great coffee and great staff! Love this place!
A medium Latte with skim milk extra hot is my favourite. Then sit outside and share the view. And if you are a bit hungry try the seed cookie.
I love their oatmeal cookies ???? with their ice cappuccino
Customer service here is awful!!!! I don't get why someone would want to grab a coffee here, since all the workers look and act like they are having the worst time ever, Extremely rude, mistreating people and rushing everyone! Terrible!!!
Love their coffee and I always get a bag of the winter roast for my dad for Christmas ☺️ love the vibe within the cafe all year round but feels especially cozy during the holiday season ???? turmeric latte is a cool, novel drink I had not previously experienced before Balzacs
Have been Balzac's fan since we saw them on dragon's den. However, in recent years the quality have decreased tremendously. The drinks that we ordered in the last few visits this year were made incorrectly and the wait time was far too long. I am giving it 1 star because there are a few staff members that go out of their way to make customers happy, but overall, the ones that are directly serving the customers are not very friendly and baristas do not know how to make drinks properly. Unfortunately, will not go there again.
Cute coffee shop, ordered 2 drinks and a cookie. Everything was okay in my opinion. Would like to go back and try something else.
Great atmosphere, great selection of coffee/teas to choose from. I got the honey, cardamom and vanilla latte which was really good.
Beautiful place. I enjoyed it. Coffee is great too
Coffee ok, But this building is epic.
The building and location of the place is delightful, however the coffee baristas make very bad cappuccino, which was very unfortunate. The milk was above the top hot ("ran away") which burned my tongue and left disappointed, while the espresso a bit too sour (please clean off the burned coffee grind before doing another espresso shot).
My favorite spot and coffee is amazing!!????
Good coffee place, but seating is a bit awkward/limited. Nice charm overall.
Love their white chocolate macademia nut latte ????????????????????????
Delicious, well-made beverages, but a little on the pricey side. Bonus: The interior is amazing!!! One of the coolest cafés I've ever seen
They implemented a 30 min limit which makes it feel like you're at McDonald's, not a gorgeous little cafe in the heart of the distillery district. You don't get a chance to take in the atmosphere and enjoy some quiet work time without counting the minutes. The coffee is mediocre and the food is overpriced. Great branding. Whoever did the design work did a great job with everything.
Beautiful space, and they offer my favourite tea brand - Kusmi
I bought a can of black cold brew. It honestly tasted like smoky BBQ (in a bad way). I took one sip and let the staff know that it was not tasting good. I was offered an iced americano instead, which was a nice gesture. Unfortunately, the iced americano was equally terrible, as it was a shot of espresso with — no exaggeration — 350ml of cold water and ice added to it. Absolutely disgusting. I left it behind and gave up.
Great service coffee is amazing additional seating upstairs well recommended
Some of the best coffee ive ever had in Toronto. In addition, the inside is beautiful and comfortable, and upstairs there is a gorgeous area with couches and coffee tables to sit and write or maybe read a good book
Very pleasant vibe and great coffee. Their cold brew was exceptionally smooth.
Love the outdoor seating area. Beautiful inside and great service to boot!
Best brewed coffee {except for mine) in Toronto I get a Cluny croissant and luxuriate for a delightful hour upstairs
Don't be fooled: this isn't an "indie" coffee shop. Coffee is average at best, service is unfriendly. First time visitors will appreciate the charm and history, but there is better coffee to be had in the Distillery.
This is one of famous coffee shop and they have branches around Toronto. I love their coffee so badly. Highly recommended!!!
Always crowded because of great drinks
Great coffee, good location, unique interior. Limited seating, but be sure to check upstairs.
Great location and atmosphere. The employees were very informative.
Love their hot chocolate!
This is my first time at this coffeehouse, staff was friendly drinks a little bit expensive, I will come back when I’m in the area.
Charming coffee shop located in a historic building. The space is perfect for bringing your computer or a book and spending some time in a nice, cozy, inspiring environment. Their coffee is great, and so are the snacks. I also love to meet people here because there's parking outside and easily accessible by car.
Trusty spot for good coffee, seating and plugs are lacking here though if you're looking for somewhere to stay/work for long
Can't go wrong with Balzac's for coffee, hot chocolate, any of you hot drink needs!
Stopped by Balzac's as a couple of friends and I were walking around Distillery District. This place is aseptically pleasing and has a place for you and your friends to sit down and chat! Loved their coffee and very friendly staff.
This is by far my favourite small time coffee shop. This is must stop place in the distillery district. Make sure to try Cafe Canadien.
Very attractive interior design and atmosphere with good quality coffee.
Really nice coffee spot at centre ice in the Distillery. Always busy with ample seating options
I have come here numerous times, I enjoy the coffee and atmosphere very much. It is comfortable and relaxing.
Superior coffee, even better if you can find a table and enjoy the ambiance.
Food and drinks were pretty good! Great atmosphere! Friendly staff.
The nicest looking coffee shop in Toronto by far !!!
Nice place to wander around or sit at a padio
Balzac's has the best coffee and the cutest interior. My friend and I sat inside, drinking our coffees and chatting for an hour and it was super nice. The staff were friendly and the service was fast. Highly recommended you try their cappuccinos.
The vanilla chai tea is to die for. Food is delicious and staff is very friendly
One of the most beautiful spaces to enjoy a coffee at in the city. Features the traditionally excellent Balzac's Coffee menu.
One of my favourite places in the city for quite times. I love the distillery district. This place is rustic and has a unique charm. I can spend hours here. I enjoyed the apple cider. Sometimes it’s a nice alternative to the tea and coffee franchises out there.
good climax, enough to be able to write my book. Is comfortable and attention is wonderful
Really liked this place - wasn’t what I was expecting to find in Toronto as it strangely reminded me of England! We went for breakfast, coffee and into a few stores. All of them were worth the trip and made a nice change from getting food/coffee downtown. I would definitely recommend paying a visit if you can and even more if there’s any events on. It was an easy trip via the street car too
Only stopped to grab and iced tea and espresso. Iced tea was good. The building itself is really cool. Service was fast and friendly for being so busy.
Beautiful place. I had a cappuccino and it was delicious.
This is not like your avarge star bucks excellent location very friendly staff and coffee is the way it should be.its very busy but when u got something amazing as this place what do you think will happen.....
So nice to have such a terrific coffee shop right in your backyard
Very impressed with this coffee shop in Distillery District. It has very stylish and chic decor. Coffee and hot chocolate are one of the best I have tasted in the city. Price is very reasonable too similar to what you would pay at Starbucks. Would come back again and again when I am in town
I love the coffee here, always a place I stop at when Im at the distillery distract
One of the best coffees in the distillery district
A big thank you to Carly, she went out of her way to help me find the perfect grind. Outstanding customer service. Thanks again!!
It was a great experience and the service was fantastic!!! I even sat outside to take in the beauty of the Distillery from Balzacs!!
Good quality coffee
a surprising great place to have a wedding reception. Oh the coffee is great too
Cozy hip gourmet coffee place. Bit pricey. Delicious.
Other
The interior is so dreamy, wood heavy, rustic and overall enchanting! Yummy coffee and the patio is right in the middle of the district :)
Good coffee and brilliant location. I would recommend trying the Nitro Cold Brew however it will not be to everyone's taste.
Very amazing space! I ordered the Matcha Latte here and loved it.
Coffee is fantastic, staff is wonderful, atmosphere stunning.
Service
A cafe in a historic building in the heart of the downtown. Very nice atmosphere to have a sip and excellent hot apple cider amd coffee.
Great coffee. Small patio to enjoy the outside
Love this place in distillery.cool coffee shop, great coffee.visit anytime i'm in toronto.
Salted Caramel Latte is delish - next time I'm ordering a large!
A "must-sense" space -- see and feel the high ceilings, old industrial shapes and angles, old posters, exposed wood and brick, a wave of great coffee smells. Often busy, especially the first floor seating area.
Gorgeous coffee shop. Delicious drinks. Worth the visit during your christmas stroll through the Distillery District.
Wonderful, classic coffee shop. Makes chilly mornings in Tor tolerable.
Coffee is much the same as you can find anywhere else. But the decor is awesome, I love the historic location.
Take out
A nice way to end a cold evening with an espresso and latte. The service was amazing and the place was clean. Washrooms were also accessible.
If you want an iced drink make sure to check if it actually has ice in it. Cant count how many times now I've ordered an iced drink and it comes not only room temperature but no added ice to keep it cold. My wife likes the chain but this location I can't say we've had good experiences with them.
Great coffee shop- right in the distillery. Nice vibe, free wifi, lots of seating, friendly staff. Yummy Americano and overall ambiance was awesome.
Amazing mocha and I love the interior. Staff are friendly and quick.
Very nice place with great coffee and good treats. Usually pretty busy. Nice photo location but unauthorized photographers are not allowed to take them. Need to call in advance! :)
Great vibe and atmosphere. Cozy coffee shop with charming character. Fine quality beans for a delightful aroma. Definitely worth checking out!
I just ordered a Nitro cold brew coffee, but it is a must have. It is served from a tap and it tastes really good. Never had anything like this before.
Christmas market is a must visit. Delicious food, nice local shops and awesome atmosphere.
Came here as a suggestion from a old coworker. The place is reminder of old warehouse I like the simple menu and selection. The ginger cookie is amazing. Just enough hint of ginger and not overwhelmingly the cookie it self. The price is very reasonable
Great atmosphere, good service, and the best hot chocolate around. I drank most of it with a spoon, too ^_^
Great place with a nice atmosphere. Prices are a bit high, had a hot chocolate a couple months back, tasted great! Went there again, didn't taste the same. Overall it's a nice place to go and hang out and have a coffee once in a while, has some really nice antique decorations too.
Warm friendly service with great espressos, coffee's and 1800's decor!
Great lattes and cozy space to work within the Distillery District.
really unique space that adds to the enjoyment of the fine coffee. I suggest you try upstairs, look around, do some selfies because there's no coffee shop quite like this in town. And yes, the coffee and beverages are really good. once of my fave stops when in the area.
Glad this place is still open during the lockdown, coffee is still great. Thanks for being great!
A very different looking cafe, good qualoty goods abd coffee but a bit pricey. They have the "Coffee in cone" which is really cool but very much more expensive than any Starbucks drink :)) They have a water stand in the summer which is really nice. Indoor and outdoor sitting. But it's a must go-to at distillery district!
Dine in
very nice cafe with great sitting area both upstairs and down, and outside in front. Good place for people watching.
Service
Very friendly staff lots of goodies to chooses from to eat. Very clean and bright.
The seafood pasta was so amazing. Servers are so kind. I notice their outfit is more fresh looks and outstanding than other restaurants around.
Beautiful space, relatively quiet (music is low, most you hear is from the bar downstaris). Upstairs is especially nice if seating is available. Coffee was great and staff is awesome
One of the best coffee shops in Toronto. This location in particular is really good and cozy. Staff is also great!
Great coffee, atmosphere & location - highly recommend!
One of my favorite coffee makers in Toronto. Always a perfect cup and nice friendly atmosphere. Note: while the Toronto reference library location is closed, the staff there were not overly enthusiastic or helpful.
Love this coffee shop... The most Instagrammable chandelier in a coffee place that I have seen. And also Balzac's also rocks it's drinks! Only downside of this store is they don't sell all the baked goods that you find at other locations .. for example: carrot cake! But otherwise this location is so cool. Already been here for 3 times so far apart from Yonge/Bloor one. Everytime I am in distillery - you can find me here
Dine in
First time here, won't return. The vibe was weird. The staff kind of had an attitude. It's super hot inside too and the bathroom is coded but once inside omg SO FILTHY. Like i get it, no one wants to clean bathrooms but do hourly checks. The Matcha Latte was okay. Like a splash of matcha and lots of milk. For the price and size, could've gone to Starbucks. My bf's Americano was good i guess. So eh.
I went to Balzac's coffee to try their new coffee in a cone! I ordered a macchiato that was very good. The barista was very friendly and the atmosphere of the place is just amazing!
I loved the lemon tart they prepared! I always have one when I go there! :))
Absolutely appalling customer service. Drinks are not appealing enough to make up for it.
This Balzac's is my favourite location. Mostly for the decor. The building is amazing, and old. A quiet loft upstairs to relax and hustling area downstairs. Coffee is total quality, as is all the locations. They really know what they are doing, as far as coffee, service, and staff. All staff are well trained baristas and know how to make a drink. You don't always get that at other shops.
Always love this place...History & coffee go together well
Great place to drunk coffe after a walk at the district
Good customer service. Cucumber, mint sparkling lemonade is simply spectacular and their cappuccinos are great as well.
This cute coffee place is in the heart of the distillery district. The coffee is local and its good! Its in an old heritage building and it just looks so cool inside. I love this place. Its my new coffee place to bring my laptop and relax as I work.
Such a beautiful place, the lighting, the art, rustic vibes. Coffee was excellent.
Great coffee and desserts..
Balzac's is a neat place to grab a coffee snack if you're looking for a light refreshment in the Distillery District. The prices are reasonable, considering other establishments in tourist-heavy areas tend to be inflated. If you're looking to sit down and have a conversation, don't expect to get a seat during their busier times. The number of seats they have is less than ideal, and the tables can fill up quickly.
Great coffee! Busy location...
Amazing! Still the best coffee I have ever had!
The original Distillery coffee shop. The building itself is beautiful and on entry a soaring 2 storey space amplifies the hiss of espressos being pulled . Excellent service and snacks - fresh pastries and juices - and lots of outdoor seating - worth a linger
Great atmosphere, beautiful coffee and great prices. lovely setting too
Quite pricey, but that Cafe Harvest is the first fall time pumpkin drink that I’ve thoroughly enjoyed. They don’t try to please the crowd with this beverage. They don’t mess around with fancy spices or foolish syrups, they don’t try to make it something it’ll never be. It tastes as if they took a little pumpkin into their own hands and lovingly milked it themselves, and if you don’t like it, they don’t care. If you want to truly be sippin on a hot pumpkin, that is a service Balzac’s provides you with this drink.
Wonderful atmosphere and great hot chocolate.
Warm and rustic coffee shop in the historic Distillery District, they offer artisanal teas, coffee and pastries. Seating is minimal on the first level but they have additional seating upstairs. They also offer free wifi to paying customers.
Good coffee and service in a nice location for walking or relaxing, however, it is a little expensive.
The store looks old fashioned and retro style. it's really nice. i loved the interior and environment at the store. However, I orederd a iced americano, but that doesn't taste like coffee. it was more like cold water with coffee flavor. Well... i'm okay with that anyway. But the barista at bar and hand off wasn't that kind or friendly when i asked more ice for my coffee. also the way he calls out the drinks sound like mad at someone. i've seen many this coffee shops on Insta or blogs. i can't find any wow factors. 1) Coffee Taste : If someone wants more coffee taste, then definately need to ask for a extra shots. Or try hot latte. i heard this coffee shop is famous for hot latte. 2) Service : better not expect excellent service. it's just okay. i never heard "thank you" 3) Location : it was easy to find it and store looks beautiful. one more thing i was dissapointed is that there were not many options for pastries and even hard to see the display.
One of the best coffee shops in Toronto! I love coming here during winter, it’s magical and they serve great coffee and hot chocolate ????
A hidden gem in downtown Toronto with cozy decor and good coffee. Would suggest to try their citrus booster, if you like a hot ginger drink!
Very busy. Great coffee. Bright and cozy if you can grab a seat.
Service
It's a charming place to go for coffee.
One of my favorite coffee places in the city
Coffee is insane here.. pastries as well. I put only 2 stars for the service we had. The girl who‘s working here was really unpleasant. I’ve never had such a bad service. The guy tried to help as much as he can but she seems to be the one in charge the day we were there.
Always a guaranteed good coffee. Good social distancing protocols, although not sure if there was good oversight of people sitting in the upstairs of the cafe as there was no staff there, but the patio seemed well thought and regulated.
It's a very rustic and classy café. The café's oroma fits in perfectly with distillery district. They also serve an amazing cappuccino.
Amazing coffee, dessert, staff and location. Always busy thou.
Great atmosphere. Enjoy grabbing a cuppa joe and heading to the 2nd floor to catch up on my reading
The iced coffee is so good :)
Dinner
Very nice location to sit and enjoy a cup or to take it to go and explore. Staff have always been great and the food and drinks are excellent.
For good coffee in The Distillery District. The coffee quality is quite good and a return visit is required
In an old firehall. Absolutely amazing atmosphere, keeping with the same look as the rest of the distillery district. Can be very busy.
Nice place to hang around in the weekend during Nice weather
Nice spot in the Distillery District but very very busy. Very good coffee
Had a really nice Affogato, great way to beat the summer heat.
Hot coffee, cold evenings... old city charm
My favorite coffee shop. Balzac always delivers. Great ambience to have a coffee break
Excellent coffee, good pastries regardless of location is a trademark.
Taset of the coffee is really good and also has cozy place to enjoy
Ever tried the Citro Booster? Not sure if I have the name right, but loaded with Vitamin C and ginger, so if you're not feeling well, skip the coffee, try this one, so good, makes you feel better when drinking this warm beverage, like a big hug! ????
Very pretty. My latte was not very good
Nice cappuccino sitting on their patio enjoying the atmosphere!
Nice atmosphere in an interesting area. I love Distillery District and I like very much Balzac's café. Sweets are also good!! I like this location because I can take beautiful photos
Great coffee and meetup spot. The staff is friendly and helpful.
Nice location in the distillery district. Coffee is only so-so.
The place is really pretty and the coffee is pretty good. It’s not one of the best coffees in Toronto for me but it’s definitely nice.
Greta coffee. Good service. Nice place to visit in The Destillery District.
The atmosphere was fantastic and the coffee a fine alternative to Starbucks. The place was packed on a long family day weekend but the staff were positive and helpful.
Sad to say that I have had a terrible experience at this location today. Due to COVID-19 and the limit of customers allowed in the store, I was patiently waiting outside in line. On arrival, their front doors were closed with no visibility inside. I was next in line and noticed that 4 people had exited and figured I was next to enter. As I had entered I was greeted with a very angry barista yelling for me to wait outside and that I was not allowed in. (This had happened 2 more times) and on the third time I was yelled at for not following rules that I wasn’t aware of. I had frustratedly asked her how I was suppose to know when my turn was next because there was no staff there to direct me. If you want your customers to have a good experience during these times. Establishments need to have better protocols so staff don’t result to yelling across the room at customers. This experience has made me extremely angry and I did not end up listening her barking orders. I will not be returning and spending my money at this company again.
The Cappuccino was delightful and the biscotti was quite delicious and surprisingly filling. For a historical location Balzac has kept their quality in mind when making their beverages. With seating both above and next to their cafe bar this is a great spot to enjoy with complimentary 1 hr free Wifi.
Very pretty location. Always good coffee.
Located in the Distillery District, visiting this cafe is the perfect mood-changer when you need a day to just enjoy life for what it is. Coffee is on the expensive-end, but usually very worth it. I highly recommend the café nordique.
Great coffee. A bit expensive. Amazing ambiance. Worth just getting in to see the decor.
The ambience is great and hot chocolate/coffee bad. :(
Cool setting. Repurposed factory. Coffee was okay.
Classic and beautiful old coffee shop.
Really nice place to get a coffee or tea in the distillery. They also have quite a few other choices, like kombucha and stuff
I was in the cafe when Simon DeGroot harassed the baristas at Balzacs. He took a picture of a young girls face in retaliation. You were a huge jerk. She was shaking after and felt super violated.
Nice place to chill. Coffee is good
This is my favourite of all the locations. I remember when I first came I was blown away. Always great go here to grab a coffee before strolling in the Distillery!
Place looks great. but coffee and hot chocolate is so bad. we had to eat something else to change the taste. we were 4 of us and tried 4 different things. each of them was bad than 1st one.
Warm and friendly environment. The coffee choices are adequate and they had 2 types of hot cider. The cookies and sweets are good.
Excellent coffee, very pleasant place.
A great, tranquil place in the heart of the city. A really superior dog park too!
Fun and cozy space. Good place to get a coffee when exploring Distillery district.
This is a small coffee shop set in the Distillery District. It's in the Pump House, which makes for interesting architecture and an unique atmosphere. Seating is extremely limited. There's some on the main floor and maybe about 20 more seats in the gallery. Normally I get my coffee to go. The coffee here is delicious. I have often heard it described as the best coffee in Toronto. I'm not sure if it's the best, but it's among the top 10 in my opinion. The food (cookies and pastries mainly with some gluten free options) is average, but the coffee is spectacular. I enjoy light roasts and the light roast was delicious. In the winter, this place is pretty cold. In the summer, it's hot though the gallery upstairs is cooler and more airy. Typically, this place is very busy, which does not invite me to linger though if you go around dinner time, it tends to be quieter. Balzac's is very popular and make do with the limitations of the old building they find themselves in. It is clean and smells inviting (coffee mostly). The washrooms are located in an odd spot (around the back), but they are clean. There is one hour of free WiFi. A good place to bring visitors from out of town.
It was my first visit. I love the old space and the character of the building. I had the hot apple cider and it hit the spot. Great visit. Definitely will be back.
Great place to spend the day eith friends ot famiky having a visist to danta village or the local beer pubs come and visist is fun entreteined and lots of buzz and food to choose from xoxo
This is a 2 level coffee shop in the distillery, but not a lot of seating. Free WiFi. Very cool atmosphere, friendly staff.
Amazing place to be to spend night under festive glittering lights and crowd. Great restaurants, shopping and food stalls. Go with friends/colleagues/family. Enjoy the walk, food, lights and festival spirit. Follow COVID protocols. Carry Vax proof and I'd card to enter.
Fantastic venue for a cozy wedding reception. Great historic building that has been rehabbed and repurposed with an eye for detail.
Nice ambience. I do find their coffee a bit too bitter for my taste.
Good coffee in a beautiful and historic building. Rotating art displays are also worth a look.
Great coffee and a good place to sit down. Just don't go during busy hours.
Great atmosphere. Lots of seating. Staff friendly and attentive.
Ok I tried the machiatto in a cone cup and parting over 5 bucks isn’t worth it. The cone is way too sweet and the drink has no taste. The cone up is good to get that instagram photo and that is all it’s good for. Too pricy for me and not worth the price.
Very great ambience. The staff was generous enough to allow us to charge our phones for 20 minutes while we dined inside.
I love this place, but lately every time I visit there is no way to get a sit. I wish they can have more tables or better arrange sitting area, it's not possible to stay outside when the weather is cold.
Very good
Nice place to have a cup of tea. Upstairs has nice comfy seats
Such a satisfying and relaxing atmosphere here !
Wonderfull location and estructure, visit this place is a must. Great staff
Great coffee with a solid atmosphere. The best Balzac's in the city IMO.
I must say that I'm an avid Dark Horse fan. However, living in the Distillery gave me a chance to try this Balzac's location and now I split my time between Dark Horse and Balzac's. Staff is always friendly and helpful, drinks are made quickly but not at the cost of quality, and the Balzac's Farmer's Blend roast (you can buy by the bag) is actually the only brewed coffee I've found in the city that I can brew myself and drink black. Will continue to frequent this Balzac's location!
One of my favorite places in Toronto to take photos and have fika.
Love the vibe, decor and atmosphere inside! My favourite spot to visit in the Distillery when it's not busy - even as a local. Selection of beverages are great - I highly recommend the Parisian Mist.
Great building. Totally decent coffee. Nice area.
Great location.... amazing coffee, especially the nitro brew ???????? nice place to warm up when checking out the xmas market
Great selection of tea and coffee
I love going here during the winter. It has a great vibe and the service is very friendly. The coffee is great! They have gluten free and vegan options. Definitely sit on the second floor.
Great coffee! The distillery district is a very nice place to wander around and explore.
The chocolate is bad really bad. No taste. Bad done. I did not recommend. Do not waste your time there and money. I do not understand why they do not sell with quality. I know about chocolate from around the world.
Great place to enjoy a coffee, that is, if you can get a seat. The Distillery used to be more barren during weekdays, but it's now remaining busy all day. Just keep that in mind if you plan on coming here with more than one other person.
Love this place everytime! It is good coffee, cool atmosphere and fun while downtown. Good pic opportunities too
You can't go wrong with this Ontario classic coffee shop with legit literary roots (Margaret Atwood coffe blend) and high quality coffee and treats (the MUST HAVE magic bar).
Great place to grab coffee on the go as you walk through the Distillery District. There can be really long line ups although they tend to move quickly as the barristas are efficient
Nice coffee shop in the Distillery District.
Amazing cafe! Coffee was great and beautiful decor. Had visited with a friend and sat upstairs. Will definitely come back here!
I haven't been to the distillery district Balzac's in over a year but this somehow popped up reminding me of the horrendous customer service I received the last time I was there. It is actually why I haven't returned. I used to go out of my way and pay for parking. It is unfortunate that they have a good location or they might have to work harder to get good reviews.
Good coffee and tea, but the atmosphere is also cool. Plenty of seating.
Cafe Harvest was better than the PSL at Starbucks
Another decent Balzac's place with good coffee and cookies. Service is god.
Very friendly staff Their drinks are good we tried 4 different drinks My favourite was the salted Carmel latte we didn’t love the macadamia latte Prices are reasonable and we loved the place It’s very cozy and beautiful
Dinner
I love the latte and coffee here. The location is amazing such great character in the building.
Wonderful café in a compelling old space, bravely open, feels safely managed for pandemic measures. Made to order drinks as requested
I love the café's interior and atmosphere. The coffee was nice! I love art works on the second floor.
Best place in Distillery District to get a cuppa. An established chain of coffee shops that also serves food and has merch.
Lots of character in the building and a must stop for coffee during your brewery district excursions.
Coffee is good, the lineups on nice day are huge. The service is so-so, they claimed they rod not know the order is for "here" even if I specifically said so, and repeated again at the end of ordering. Very rushed and careless, spilling coffee everywhere.
Located in a precious little nook of Toronto. Feels like a European escape. Again, Balzac's has secured an impressive historic storefront. Staff are simply the friendliest here.
Lots of fun at the distillery district.
While in Distillery district decided to try this coffee specialists after a meal Was so impressed with the awesome menu There were a super special coffee menu from caramel to white chocolate and more Ordered a caramel coffee tasted superb like the best I’ve ever had The white chocolate flavoured coffee was great too The coffee quality was excellent too To buy our coffee was a very long queue at 9.50 pm late evening took us 25 to 30 minutes to get to the counter and then they make ur coffee They have a cosy and cool small seating area on the first level Wonderful experience except for the lo
Cool atmosphere for fair trade coffee but limited seating and always busy. They offer macadamia milk (yum!) and all their milk is organic and local which are great alternatives compared to most coffee shops.
Favourite location. Nothing like sitting on the Balcony overlooking the big windows and the bustle. Primo seat in the house. The old building is beautiful. Good service. Great tea latte (vegan style)
Great meeting spot for a first date. Great coffee and room. If it goes well, go out and explore the Distillery
Great coffee and cosy spot. Short seating times though as they want people to cycle through every 30 mins at most.
Service
Great atmosphere, good prices. Nice place to relax at the distillery.
A good place to enjoy coffee and pastries in the Distillery District. It's one of the most charming buildings in the area. Go upstairs for a great view of the space.
Cool place and ambiance. Good coffee and nice place.
Balzac's makes a good, reliable coffee and this location is gorgeous. Certainly the best coffee in the distillery.
Great coffee and atmosphere. Ordering could be a bit better organized.
Wonderful upper room to drink and view the coffee! Coffee was good.
Great decor, good ambiance. Only one bathroom working though, and it would be more convenient to have an upstairs garbage receptacle.
One of my fav coffee in town. And gotta have one with my just engaged Fiancé right after dinner. Gotta show her the ropes of what's good in town!!
Great coffee and great service but it gets 3 stars for reasons out of its control: it's insanely busy here
Great tea - had the decaf earl grey & lemon tart. Great location, upper & outdoor seating, fast Wifi, clean place & bathrooms! Please come to New York City!
Inside the old fire house at the distillery. Great coffee shop. Not a lot of inside seating.
I really don't understand why people rated so good for their coffee. It is not my first time though, I tried several times, not only this location. Actually their service was subpar... coffee taste was just general or less than other coffee shops. Their Macchiato was bad bad, I never had like that. Please improve your coffee or service, I am fine the place's chairs broken or smells garbage
Yummy hot chocolate but overpriced "magic bar" for the size. She also almost charged us for 2 extra hot chocolates because we changed the sizes that we wanted (luckily I caught it!). Really cozy atmosphere and fun upstairs seating
Really nice location and awesome coffee and pastries. Can be very busy so be prepared to wait a while in the summer months.
Coffee is always fresh and brewed to perfection!
Other
Always great. Quick service, great coffee in a funky atmosphere
Love the location. The decor is just fantastic. Homey but eclectic atmosphere. Nice space above as well. Food is good as well, but I definitely come here for the place.
Went in for a coffee at 8am and noticed there were no juices no baked goods as advertised only pop and some pre purchased desserts then after purchasing my coffee was told that there was no cream and only enough milk for one of my two coffees ??? Really?? At 8am?? Why bother opening ?? Returned my coffee and left... sad place

Beautiful location! Great place to hangout with friends, read a book or work.
Nice area in Old Toronto with shops and open air cafes & restaurants.
Often super busy, but I can always find a single seat upstairs it seems. Coffee is fine, good place to warm up in during the winter market.
LOVE this coffee shop. The limonade is good, great variety for teas, drafy coffee is cool and cookies are delicious.
Great little cafe for a quick bite and a coffee while walking around in the beautiful distillery district. Looks very old and extremely charming. All the coffee and pastries we got tasted amazing and were extremely tasty. It is self service and the people behind the desk are very nice. Love it. 5/5 definitely recommended.
I love stopping for a latte and browsing the Internet while sitting in this lovely venue which gives you that "vacation type experience."
I love this Balzac location because of their warm and nostalgic interior design and atmosphere. They have nice selection of breads and cookies. The beverages taste great.
Great place to work, lounge or meet a friend for a coffee. The location is great, coffee and food are wonderful.
Beautiful and pleasant. I liked the coffee Canadian.
Love the coffee here!
Take out
I walked through the south east corner looking for a quick lunch stop. I wad amazed by how many small and medium sized places where one could eat out get coffee were available...... This is one of these hidden little corners of Toronto where a day spent exploring could be very rewarding.
Yesterday I was here and the atmosphere was amazing, tonight it was different.... four of us came at 8:10 and we all ordered drinks and a desert, but were not given mugs or dishes, because they were closing at 9; I even asked. I then took a photo and was told not to take unauthorized photos, it was very strange. I was going to post a photo, but it was “unauthorized”. I’m writing this review in hopes the manager or owner sees it, because the coffee is great and the brand is great, but I’m curious is it policy to only get take out options 50 minutes before close?
Hot chocolate was decent. Rooster, Odin, or Tandem has much better coffee.
Great place to have coffee outdoors, but the interior feels less like a barn
Nice coffee spot in Distillery District. Cool set up inside. I didn't get a chance to try their coffee unfortunately but their cookie was delicious. Nice space upstairs to read or hang out with friends.
Super awesome atmosphere, the coffee is excellent to boot. Check out the seating upstairs as well!
Amazing hot chocolate
Try the caramel latte!
Coffee is great, location is amazing but no the service.
Delicious matcha latte! Beautiful interior peppered with vintage memorabilia.
Nice place for good coffee and atmosphere
Great location. Located in distillery. Cozy coffee shop with both indoor and outdoor seating available. Great character to the building and it shows. Good selection of hot beverages and treats. One of the better Balzac's in the city to visit. It's usually quite busy and seating upstairs is usually a challenge. Still worth stopping by.
Delicious coffee located in an historic building in the Distillery District. My go-to spot whenever I find myself down there. Friendly and efficient service combined with a great setting. Outdoor seating available but the interior is the prize with seating on two levels and fun décor.
Nice place to sit. Customer service and coffee/late wasn’t too good, also bit pricey. On my next visit to distillery district will try other places for sure. But again place itself was nice... 3 stars
Awesome little coffee shop with a great atmosphere! I tried the "café canadien" and it was really good! Recommended.
Beautiful coffee shop located in one of the nicest areas in Toronto. It's located in the corner of a building next to a beautiful architectural piece. The inside has been kept rustic and old like the previous decoration was. I like that a lot, I believe it's a nice continuity to the whole building it's located in. They have indoor and outdoor seating. The indoor seating is huge and extends on a second level as well. My friend and I were there as tourists, but we saw a lot of people studying since it's next to Georges Brown College and I believe that it is a perfect spot to study since the music isn't too loud and the seating area is huge. As for the coffee, it was absolutely delicious. I ordered an iced coffee with soy milk and a vanilla pump. It's not too pricey, especially for an independent coffee shop located in a nice area. My friend had a hot chocolate and she said it was very good, not too sweet, not too heavy. The staff is very nice, very helpful and patient. Definitely would recommend!
Take out
Decent coffee, not strongly flavored in any way but good enough
Meal type
Very different atmosphere. Friendly and cozy. Decent coffee.
Great coffee at Balzacs good ambiance in whole distillery district with unique shops
Books like lovely coffee however after standing in line and ordered my coffee and paid I fell in love with the delicious looks of their cookies and bars. They told me I had to go back to the end of the line if I wanted to order a cookie or Square. Too bad they look delicious
Meal type
Being a coffee addict, I need my coffee. Balzac’s uses quality beans, which are roasted just right, to bring out the coffee flavour, smell, and wonderful taste. The staff here are friendly and helpful. This place also has great vibes and atmosphere. It is also environmentally friendly.
Cute location. Great coffees. Delicious deserts. And amazing americano
First of all, the traditional macchiato was excellent. On a sunny day in Toronto, this is the perfect place to chill and people watch in the Distillery District.
The staff was very friendly and attentive. I had an apple cider which was hot and refreshing. Love this place!
Great coffee in a very rustic cool to hangout place. Always something going on or see in the distillery.
Nice historic venue with good coffee and friendly staff. Usually quite full though.
Staff are always friendly, helpful, and the coffee is great and reasonably priced. Cool patio with great people watching and pop up art installations
Balzac’s was the perfect place for us to have our wedding! the space was great for our intimate wedding with friends and family, we had the entire place plus the patio out front. It is also very affordable. Cathy, the event coordinator is truly a superstar, our wedding ran smoothly because of her.
Service
If you are considering having your wedding here, DO IT! We had ours here and had an amazing event. Manager Cathy was super helpful and the venue is just fantastic and very affordable!
Service
Really great atmosphere and good coffee. It's always very busy so hard to find a seat at times.
Service
Great staff, great vibes, and consist with there good coffee. Expect a wait at times, and most importantly - dont be suprised if you cant find any seating. It gets busy!
A fantastic place to relax, have coffee or tea, and read a book.
Good and friendly people
Best place to have a coffee or latte. It felt like I was in europe. Really loved their Green Tea Latté
Really pretty coffee house. Nice location in Distillery and convenient right next to parking
Nice ambiance with high quality products but there is no air conditioning so very hot in summer but wouldn’t matter if you are lucky to find a spot to sit outside Asked for an iced matcha latte with light ice but got a glass with more than half of it filled with ice!
All the cookies and muffins are stale! Second time there today and just got a $3.15 cookie that actually just chipped my tooth! Absolutely rock hard and has been sitting there for a while. Absolutely ridiculous!! Will never recomend this place to anyone. What a mess.
Best matcha latte you will ever have
Love the aesthetics of this place but the drinks not as much. Drinks are average. Lineups tend to be crazy especially when we went during the Christmas Market. Could be a whole different story in other seasons. If you're able to snag a seat, the upstairs is nice, with changing gallery displays.
Very good coffee place right in the Distillery District!
Wish I could be one of those who wrote positive reviews of this cafe. Both two staff on a Wednesday were unfriendly, rather hostile somehow although I just ordered nothing but one hot chocolate. The price was $1.5 more expensive than the menu. It just did not reflect the menu hanging in the wall. $6 for a medium hot chocolate (more of a tall Starbucks size) is way too overpriced for a place like this. And finally, the taste, was nothing but lukewarm milk with a little of of hot chocolate flavour.. I would have not left a negative review if the taste, at least, was acceptable. This was one of my favorite places to visit in Distillery District, but now it cannot even compete with Tim Hortons.
Greta historic place for morning coffee or cold drink with friends and family
I love the uniqueness of this Distillery coffee shop which has a great feel and decor. The coffee and snacks are definitely above average. A great destination to grab a coffee and walk around the Distillery District.
Great little cafe in the distillery! love the ambiance and food.
Meal type
A really well decorated cozy place with nice staff. tried their ice coffee and it was really tasty.
The Nitro coffee is not recommended. Are When I finally got to try it, the taste more like beer. Took me a few times going there to even get this brew. Sweets are abundant. Muffins are gone quick in the morning. Iced brewed tea is excellent.
Cool spot with good coffee right in the middle of the distillery district
Worth a visit just to see the beautiful chandelier inside. This cozy place has two levels. Walk up the stairs to get a bird's-eye view of the cafe. Wonderful service!
Nice spot for a coffee if you’re in the Distillery. Plenty of outdoor seating during the spring and summer, but it’s so beautiful inside that it’s almost better to ditch the patio.
The french breakfast tea is excellent, the coffee is okay. Cool space and a nice front patio to relax on in the summer.
Love this place. The ambiance is outstanding. I love the coffee and the staff are great.
Great decoration&atmosphere. Staffs are super friendly.
Really nice kwirky location. The coffee is excellent. Make sure you pay attention to who is actually in the line or you could be waiting uselessly for a while
Wonderful coffee shop in the Distillery District. Warm ambience, great tasting brew and all kinds of delicious treats. I love this place!
Try their iced matcha or coffee, really good, a bit expensive but hey look where you are the distillery district, you pay for the view and atmosphere
I had a friend I was helping move who had needed some assistance and we had boxes to carry and my phone died he was waiting holding the boxes I walked a mile to help him as we were stuck with no Uber or taxi this was the first location I arrived . It maybe covid and I understand take out and not lingering but where is the line considering I wasn't there any longer than anyone in line. This was an excuse to be rude. All I needed was to get a coffee and three minutes to charge my phone as we needed an Uber / taxi and a "Karen" at a coffee shop there in an otherwise good winter day threatened to call the police on me and did call security and was extremely rude. No one was getting covid from me I wasn't in the location any longer than anyone else! I was holding my place in line and while in line plugged my phone in and for that she threatened police involvement and actually called security. I left and will never return. Security acted extremely rude. Any stores there should talk to your security and have them treat your customers with reasonableness and dignity or you will loose customers. By the way put some money into charity instead of being pretentious if you can afford a million dollar distillery condo you can give to charity and make sure you have online spaces that are safe. I regularly do public interest work and have a law background but clearly they treat the vulnerable here like garbage and are fake pretentious people who probably spend more money on implants and injections than charity! ( stop whacking off to online spaces you don't even check if there is ID and respect and help the vulnerable! ) Beyond that help the vulnerable if a person needs to charge a cell phone in an emergency show bloody compassion. The world needs more compassion! Don't be a Karen !
Basically false advertising. You get sold an afogato for $5.95, but it barely fills a 1/4 of a cup. Utter rip off.
Neat space with upstairs loft sitting area. Solid coffee too. Had an iced americano and it hit the spot
Excellent coffee, location, and interior. Definitely a place I will return to again and again.
Great coffee, great atmosphere though I detest the switch to the 12oz bag without the corresponding equal price adjustment. It's just dishonest.
Very nice place for a casual sit down and a coffee. Usually packed so seating can sometimes be an issue. But I love the atmosphere!
Service
Great spot to grab a coffee, tea, and/or a snack. Can get pretty crowded during peak times, especially during the summer. Washrooms are single occupancy, so lineups are almost inevitable if the main area is crowded.
Nice spot to enjoy coffee, either alone or with company. Upstairs has more seating. Can easily get comfortable.
Great coffee choices, and really good hot chocolate. The place is nicely decorated, and the service is polite.
Great cafe serving really nice coffee and brownies. A must visit in the distillery district.
great place and coffee but the hot chocolate wasn't hot at all
Had a cortadito and It was great. customer service was nice and the decore was very cool, looked like an old factory.
Nice place and good coffee and friendly staff , if I'm going to distillery district at morning that is my favorite place to sit and drink morning coffee
Definitely one of my most favourite coffeehouses in Toronto; great coffee, great place, nice staff.
Meal type
Delicious menu and a unique location. Definitely would look into as a event venue because of the character.
Such a wonderful historic environment. Truly a pleasure to be there either inside or out on the patio. The coffee is amazing (I had a cortado). The non-Canadians like me needed to be educated about the Canadian Coffee/latte (it has maple syrup in it) and a few of the folks with us had it and raved about it. I will definitely be back, this place is awesome.
Meal type
Most of this place is closed but Balzac's is open to walk in. They should limit families of 4 as it got a little crowded. The coffee was good.
Funny name. Good coffee.
I’ve been going to Balzac’s for years and always loved their lattes. My friends and I got the toasted almond latté and white chocolate mocha and they tasted *nothing* like they did in the previous years. I don’t know what’s gotten into Balzac’s. Maybe it’s just this branch.
I had the displeasure of going in during the Christmas Market. The ambiance and coffee are great, however the brunette cashier was possibly the rudest person I've encountered in a customer service position. The whole interaction was full of snide remarks and barely paying attention to what I was saying, culminating in her putting the wrong order into the system. When I pointed it out, her answer was "well you ordered it". Instead of "thank you", to close the transaction all she said was "you won't get your order for 20 minutes".
Other
Getting too popular to be a good place to go and have a cup of tea and talk at. Good staff though and they brew a good cup.
Great little spot in the Distillery District to grab a coffee or tea, with plenty of selection on which type you'd like. Not much selection in terms of quick bites and no way to heat them up. Expect a line during the summer months and during the Christmas Market. Otherwise, enjoy the beautiful interior and seating both on the main level and upstairs or outside during the summer months.
What a nice coffee shop in this historic building. The staff are well trained, friendly and really work fasts for the volume of people they serve. There is also a very nice seating area on the second floor with tables and chairs and a couple of couches. The atmosphere is vibrant in yjis quaint building. There is a gigantic chandelier hanging from the vaulted ceiling. The hot beverages sold here are very good. I highly recommend Balzac's.
It is a nice place to just meet and chat over coffee. There is a good space to sit. One in the outer side of the store, one inside and a bigger room upstairs. I like the ambience and service. Highly satisfactory!
Coffee tastes like Starbucks - below par, has a burnt ash tray taste. Disappointing. However, Ambiance and decor is irrefutably charming and warm. I also do you love the fact that they use local organic milk. Coffee connoisseurs and enthusiasts stay safe ....avoid the coffee and have a tea.
Great coffee and a very unique atmosphere.
The coffee is very good. Also a really nice location for meeting friends and doing homework.
Great little break from the excitement of the Distillery district- excellent coffee and equally awesome atmosphere.
Love coming here early on a weekday am. Nuce and quiet and the space is so beautiful.
There was a drugded up dude with his feet on the table. No one from the staff told him not to do that. Im not going there back again
At least i try take pictures, but its fine. I drink cold milk actually pretty good. The coffee place is gorgeous when you take de sun outside and talk to your friends. In the middle Distillery District, the Balzac's is much better in the mornings especially because not have to much tourists. PS: dont take pictures inside with your camera, just phones.
I love this location! Great coffee, the place looks AMAZING.
Loved the place and hot ???? cider. Yummy
Very nice place with pleasant atmosphere and acoustics. The cappuccino was pretty great: I did not know Balzac's was part of a chain, I would have believed it was a one of a kind.
Really nice location, the nitro cold brew coffee had a bit of an off flavour. The service was only so-so
