I was excited to try Two Whales as I've driven past it numerous times while visiting Newfoundland. I made it in last week for the first time and was a little disappointed all due to the customer service (or lack thereof) The young lady serving me (take out order) was cold and unfriendly. She could not muster a smile in greeting (so unlike businesses in Newfoundland!) and when asked what she would recommend in terms of the pastries, she simply shrugged her shoulders. She prepared my order and simply plunked them down on the counter without an "enjoy" or "thank you for your business" (again so unlike the customary friendliness of this province). I observed her being curt with other customers as I meandered around looking at the art work. I purchased the book authored by the owners and in reading their lengthy and indepth Mission Statement, was surprised such behavior of staff would be tolerated. In speaking with my family from the area, I have heard my experience was not necessarily a one off. Others have also come away from this establishment feeling as though staff were judgemental or completely detached from providing customers with a pleasant experience. All that being said, despite disappointing and cool customer service, the food, latte and organic lemonade were quite delicious. I would recommend this place for the superb quality of food but would provide a warning that the staff interaction may be a little off putting. I will try Two Whales again on my next visit to Newfoundland with the hope it will be much more positive.
Food was great, service was not, our server seemed like she would rather be anywhere but at work
Wholesome, healthy food options!
A must stop for lunch and tea time. Good vegetarian food and great environment
Excellent food, service and location!
Lovely small place with a very rustic and wonderful feel. Had a good cup of jumping bean coffee and a delicious partridgeberry brownie that was the perfect combination of taste, texture and sweetness. Has some gorgeous art for sale from local artists and some wonderful t-shirts and more! Quite busy as well so they'll be around for a long time to come I hope.
Delicious food, and good to know it's locally sourced.
Everything is excellent!
Great coffee, but you have to try the lemon blueberry cake.
Nice friendly staff. Good healthy food. Best brownies around.
Very nice place. Excellent food.
When we got to Port Rexton, we were not expecting to find such an amazing little vegetarian cafe. Worth the stop
Stop in every time I'm in the area! Great food, espresso and desserts!
Great coffee, great vibes, amazing spot
Excellent food in a friendly atmosphere that features exhibition space for artists.
Great little spot to grab a coffee and a treat. They have a full menu. You can eat inside or head outside on a nice day. And what a view!! You are only minutes from the Port Rexton Brewery and the Skerwink hiking trail.
Deliciously fresh and vegetarian. Coffee is exceptional
Quaint and homey with simple fresh food. Staff is great, especially Abby.
Two Whales Coffee Shop in Port Rexton is a great place to grab a coffee and a vegetarian meal. Their baked goods are great.
Amazing coffee and food! Definitely worth going out of your way to try this place :)
Awesome food and read staff
Delightful in every way with gluten free / dairy free options that will tickle your taste buds in all the right ways. Lovely locale overlooking the water too!
Hurra..ein echter espresso in newfoundland...enjoy!!!
Cute little coffee house. Had a very nice cuppa tea here.
Absolutely delicious vegetarian/vegan/gf snacks. Loved the atmosphere and the goodies. Will be back any time I'm in the area again.
Excellent food and desserts. Friendly service.
We were a group of five , all had different paninis. The service was slow, 2 were completely finished their meal and the other 3 were still waiting for food for quite a while. The salads were 10 lettuce leaves with a hint of oil and vinegar, completely tasteless, the famous coleslaw was also tasteless. The paninis lacked everything, especially taste. We were expected to eat salads with a wooden spoon! Fingers worked better. The desserts were horrible, partridge berry brownie was oily and tasteless. The chocolate cake had a hint of chocolate but felt like you had coffee grounds in your mouth. The entire experience was horribly overpriced and you had to tip before you experienced any of this! We, a group of 5 from different parts of the island would not recommend this place to anyone.
Great, healthy food options - not common in these parts!
Nice cozy place run by some very pleasant staff.
Great food and hospitality.
Very cute and bright. Coffee was really good and menu was well put together.
Awesome little coffee shop, with vegetarian and vegan options. Finally a non dairy latte in the small towns of newfoundland!
Best coffee on the island!
My head almost exploded when we found a vegetarian spot in the woods of Newfoundland. So excited. When we arrived and saw them growing their own food, and serving top quality food, that was the cherry on top! Do note, this is not a cheap place to eat! It was very expensive, even for newfoundland. Prices here were 50% more than what they would be in Boston, MA, USA. Which also is an expensive place. It's worth it, to eat organic vegetarian food, just be prepared. Staff are awesome, and so nice. Baked goods are off the charts good.
Our experience was probably out of the norm, but our coffee order was forgotten and then we waited 20 minutes for sub par coffee... Suggest getting their espresso instead. The partridge berry brownie was excellent though.
Amazing spot for a lunch after a hike. All of the food was incredibly fresh and tasty (the coffee and desserts were especially awesome!!).
Excellent baked goods. The door seemed locked... but they were open. A great stop after hiking the Skerwink trail.
(Translated) Excellent coffee and what about caramel brownies and delicious salt (Original) Excellant café et que dire des brownies caramel et sel délicieux
The sandwiches were smaller but much better than I expected. Worth trying if you're in the area.
I went with 4 adults and tell kids. I was extremely impressed. There was greatly selection of local, fresh ingredients (you can see the farm next to the parking lot). They had a high chair, friendly service and even toys for the kids to play with while waiting.
Very cozy little coffee/tea shop with really delicious baked goods, like a huge salted caramel brownie. The drinks are great, but don't expect quick service here as it's quite busy, and if you sit down for service then those coming in for takeout after you will get served before you. Overall great spot for a stop and refreshing drink though, so I highly recommend you check it out.
Delicious coffee and baked goods. The best brownies ever. Friendly staff
Warm, friendly staff and delious food
Great food.
(Translated) A real good surprise on the road: a small restaurant where you will find delicious paninis (a dozen recipes all more appetizing than the others) accompanied by fresh salad of their vegetable garden and a very good coleslaw, as well as some soups . The portions may not seem huge (especially in this country) but you will get enough with a dish and a dessert. Their desserts all look amazing, their carrot cake is probably the best I've had in my life! They have a wide menu of drinks, homemade lemonade and orangeade, their coffee is a real espresso coffee (very hard to find that in North America) and it's very good, they have a large amount of tea in jars behind the counter ..Being you go for a breakfast, a lunch, a snack or even just a coffee, do not hesitate, this is by far one of the best places I have eaten here! The staff is lovely and the place is quiet and bright.
Great coffee, great desserts and delicious vegetarian food!
Pretentious and overpriced. The panini was good, but French onion soup was a joke.
Stumbled upon this place going to the Skerwink trail. This is a cute popular spot in Port Rexton with vegan/vegetarian options for their food choices. Had a panini and salad and it was delicious, they even split it up for us as we just needed a snack before hitting the trail. Their soups, though I didn't have one, also looked very tasty. And they offer a variety of desserts, the espresso brownie was most yummy. Would definitely go back.
The lavender brownie is my favorite!
What a wonderful delight for fine dinning in such a quaint little place.
Nice little coffee shop. Local art on the walls. Pleasant staff. Good food.
Amazing food, amazing location.
Friendly staff, great coffee and even better desserts!
We are thoroughly enjoying all the food options in Newfoundland but what a treat to find this fine coffee, vegetarian restaurant with many gluten free options including the Bollywood panini pictured here. And a socially and environmentally responsible mission statement. Garden outside. I love it!
Wonderful coffee and food. I loved their moca and capuchino
The most beautiful little eco-friendly cafe ever! The staff are delightful. . A variety of treats for all. Their hazelnut latte is amazing!!
Stopped in at random trying to find something to eat before the hike in East Trinity. Very pleasantly surprised! I had an excellent panini, salad and chili combo. Kept me going through the hike and the evening! The staff was great, and I loved the art space. Excellent atomosphere all in all. ????????????????????????
I don’t give many fives because, to me, a place needs to be very very special to deserve such a rating. Two Whales is such a place. It is an organic gem. The staff was so very friendly and our waitress went out of her way to make sure we were pleased and she was so accommodating. Last, but far from least, the food was deliciously prepared and plated.
Good coffee, quaint. Only complaint is that you have to walk through the entire dining area to order at the counter. This can feel a bit odd if your ordering to go because of the shape of the building.
Loved the gluten free brownies! Coffee is great!
Loved the mushroom pannini!
Very limited menu, not cheap...vegetarian/vegan? Very nice spot, quaint, bright and friendly staff. But if your looking for meat of any kind you will be disappointed.
I am a big fan of this place. Amazing soup and sandwiches. The ocean is just across the street
Amazing place! Great choice for some warm soup, sandwich or just coffee break. Delicious food, fast service, adorable atmosphere. A lots of of healthy options, oat milk, almond milk and super testy espresso coffee. Great stuff! You need to check it on your way!
Very nice place, the view is lovely, the staff are friendly. I took my aunt and Uncle there for Lunch, and we had the nicest time. No rush to get us out. The food is vegetarian, but don't let that stop you it is filling and great!
Really great food!
This place is really awesome. Tasty, fresh food, great friendly service. Great attention to detail!
Very good espresso beverages (including the decaf ones). Inventive menu of well made desserts. Big ideas in a peaceful and remote setting.
Great latte.
Friendly and efficient staff serving vegetarian fare.
Awesome food and coffee. Don't just drive by - drop in
Good coffee and deserts
Delicious chocolate partridgeberry brownie and coffees. Bright and welcoming staff and garden. ☺️
Every time that we head up to the Bonavista Peninsula, on our way to Port Union, we make a point of stopping in here for a great, light meal. They feature quite a nice collection of gluten-free treats, the soups are fantastic, the owners and staff are friendly, and, being in Newfoundland and Labrador, no one is a stranger. Please do just smile and meet a new friend, either one of the locals stopping in for a coffee or another tourist, or as we pronounce it her, torist. It's amazing the number of CFAs (Come From Aways) who, after visiting the area, end up staying.
Planned to have lunch here, it was very busy at 1:30pm on Tuesday. When we walked in, all tables were full but no one greeted us or informed us there would be some waiting. Very disappointing experience.
(Translated) Beautiful decorations. Souvenirs for sale (Original) Belle decorations. Souvenirs à vendre
Lovely little place. Ordered a latte with oat milk along with a slice of orange, coconut cake. So Delicious! Learned about how the owners made Newfoundland there home and the story behind this cute cafe. Great food and drinks, occasional fresh produce for sale, along with and a few little local arts, crafts and books that make for great gifts. Definitely worth stopping by.
Great coffee, great service. Good selection of high quality breakfast and lunch options.
Great stop for good espresso and a treat! Really fresh and tasty.
One of my favorite places in Trinity! Great coffee, espresso, tea, and homemade ice cream! Love the eco-conscious, fair trade, organic, home grown goodness here. Thanks for taking a holistic approach! Also, the live music on Saturdays from July to September is phenomenal. Great place, amazing staff.
Just perfect in every way. If you are in the area looking for a quick bite or cup of coffee you can't beat this spot! I'm not even vegetarian or vegan and I thought the food was great!
Just by being here it's great. A great breakfast stop or lunch with a yummy panini. But it also has a lovely cute converted home feel and art-supporting team who host music and visual arts.
So much to love about this spot. Convenient on the highway, lots of parking, sweet decor, friendly service and AMAZING vegan, vegetarian and gluten free food. Be sure to ask for the food menu (which is in addition to the chalkboard menu) and sit in to eat. For a small spot I was very impressed with their wide selection. And they were open daily! Their gardens made me "green" with envy. Oh, and ger the 50 cent discount for bringing your own mug. Great incentive to decrease waste!
(Translated) Excellent restaurant. The meals are healthy, which is rare in the area, good and nutritious. The desserts are really divine, the homemade lemonade very good and they offer real coffee (not the fleet as elsewhere). Do not hesitate to stop there, plus all the staff is super nice. (Original) Excellent restaurant.
Really great brownies
I absolutely loved it here. I don't usually eat vegetarian dishes but the paninis are fantastic here! It was the perfect meal after a long day of driving. I love the garden and chickens in the back, made for a very authentic locally grown feel!
Coffee was good. Beautiful display of art by local artist.
Great coffee and amazing brownies
Great coffee shop, cozy atmosphere, scenic community
Very cute shop. Food is delicious and view of the bay is lovely. Ate lunch here twice on my trip. Soups were delucious and paninis were creative and delicious.
Good service and selection of coffee and sweets and paninis. Outside seating is convenient.
Delicious food and great coffee
Must see. The wait for the paninis can be quite long, but in fairness the care that goes into the sandwich and the taste, presentation etc more than make up for it. It is great to see a business with their mission statement proudly posted on their wall. A must visit if you are anywhere near it.
Fantastic food and spectacular homemade lemonade!
Beautiful spot! Delicious coffee and lattes
Delicious homemade food and I bought a lovely piece of art to bring home to Ontario to remind us of our unforgettable vacation to the beautiful province of Newfoundland!
Great coffee
The Mexican panini was delicious! Great view of the bay from the window. Staff were friendly and food came out quickly.
Food was lacking flavour. Salad was a leaf lettuce with tasteless oil dressing, coleslaw was lack luster as well. Had panini with partridgeberry and brie which was just ok. Had partridgeberry brownie that was oily and flavorless. Lemonade and coffee was good. Very overpriced for what we got and quality of same. We were a group of 5 and I probably enjoyed mine the most. Two of us had our meal completed before the other three had theirs delivered.
Love it
Nice little shop. 7 tables or so inside. Great coffee, and delicious healthy food choices.
Friendly owen / staff and our bagels were tasty!
Had the TLT with salad, loved that they had vegan options! We visited the garden after lunch
Great coffee and desserts!
Two Whales is one of my favourite places to go. It's charming and unique, and located in gorgeous Port Rexton. The owners are wonderful people who support the local art community, the coffee is delicious and they have fresh vegetarian options made with their own produce. Also GF and vegan options. Love it!
The food was exceptional. Home made bread was second to none. The staff was super nice and the service was great.
Great gluten free choices and great coffee!!
Coffee was delightful but the dishes we had didn't have much flavour.
Good coffee. Wide selection of sweets. Brownies are excellent.
Nice coffee, nice desserts.... having gluten free options always takes places to new levels
The staff at this place are ALWAYS kind and courteous. Have only had beverages here but they are always made with love. Thank you for the lovely experience!
Coffee was good, 1 or the 2 brownies I got was ok. I thought I would like this place more but one of the servers put me off, she wasnt that friendly
Great visit to this place! Staff and service are always top-notch. If you're lucky enough to catch one of their intimate concerts with visiting performers, you are in for a real treat!
Delicious food and beverages, and a great mission/business model as a bonus
Very cute place, it was busy with not a lot of space though, so I didn't stay for food, buy with nicer weather there is lot of outdoor seating. The iced coffee I had was good. Staff was polite, overall a nice place to stop.
(Translated) We were seduced by the panini great seduction. Beautiful little vegetarian cafe with local shopping philosophy, see in the garden behind the restaurant! Excellent slatted (Original) Nous avons été séduit par le panini grande séduction. Magnifique petit café végétarien avec philosophie d'achats locaux, voir dans le jardin derrière le restaurant! Excellent latté
This is a wonderful alternative treat. There are many healthy vegan and vegetarian options. The owners also grow their own vegetables as much as possible. Plus they also are community orientated and give donations from their mug sales to help the needy. I highly recommend this gem for healthy courses during your travels and if I was a local I would frequent this establishment on a regular basis. The staff was tremendous, friendly, and accommodating.
Beautiful surprise ! The brownies are awesome. The vintage style and the side products are too. Keep up the good work!
Neat place to eat with paninis and desserts. Main items may not be to some kids palettes though there's some options for kids (mine chose from regular items and one really enjoyed and one did not like his choice as much). Adults in the group loved it.
Great coffee and snacks. Visited more than once. Thanks
nice little cosy place.
Great little cafe! Bit pricey but worth it and conveniently located right on the highway. We did some hiking and stopped for a treat on our way home. The mission statement posted on the wall by cash area really made me appreciate the business and noted it was also awarded for sustainability in 2020.
Friendly folks and organic coffee
We saw 2 humpbacks breaching in the bay as we left the restaurant. It gets 5 stars for that alone. Very nice place.
It's ok
Unique and healthy menu items
I thought this was going to be a simple meal. It is now 8 months later and the experience has changed our lives. Two Whales serves delicious food and coffee, but is also a glimpse into something much deeper and exceptionally meaningful. Two Whales is about relationships within the community and living in balance with the planet. They are passionate about their deeper purpose and have written a recipe book about it. Stories of their journey are dispersed between the healthy, vegetarian recipes. Some of the stories have had me in stitches and been a source of inspiration. Two Whales is inspiring. Two Whales has helped change the way my family and I live. We will return to Newfoundland and the Two Whales Coffee Shop. Thank you to Lynn for taking us to this little jewel with a big heart.
Fantastic lemonade, beautiful view, lovely staff.
Coffee was really good, nice baked goods as well
Great place, great food
Great Food and service
Food is delicious
The most delicious food I've eaten in ages! Many vegan and vegetarian options, in fact I'm not either but if these guys were in St. John's I'd go Vegan tomorrow!!
I stop here any time I'm passing by for a visit to Bonavista. Great view, coffee , and atmosphere. The employees are very friendly and welcoming.
Nice little café en route to Bonavista. Friendly service
Nice roadside stop for a great coffee and baked goods!
Great place to stop for breakfast or lunch. The food is very well done. I had soup, salad, bread and a brownie (in separate visits) and all were excellent. You can tell they put great care and pride into everything. Please note that it's vegetarian only. That wasn't clear to me until I read the menu and couldn't find meat or eggs in anything.
Very very good! My friends said the coffee was amazing!
We have taken a detour off of the highway just to come to this spot, a must stop. Highly recommend.
I love this place. Went three years ago also. Coffee and desserts are great.
One of the best brownies I've ever had!
