REVIEWS OF Two Whales Coffee Shop IN Newfoundland and Labrador

Heather Olliff-Holloway

I was excited to try Two Whales as I've driven past it numerous times while visiting Newfoundland. I made it in last week for the first time and was a little disappointed all due to the customer service (or lack thereof) The young lady serving me (take out order) was cold and unfriendly. She could not muster a smile in greeting (so unlike businesses in Newfoundland!) and when asked what she would recommend in terms of the pastries, she simply shrugged her shoulders. She prepared my order and simply plunked them down on the counter without an "enjoy" or "thank you for your business" (again so unlike the customary friendliness of this province). I observed her being curt with other customers as I meandered around looking at the art work. I purchased the book authored by the owners and in reading their lengthy and indepth Mission Statement, was surprised such behavior of staff would be tolerated. In speaking with my family from the area, I have heard my experience was not necessarily a one off. Others have also come away from this establishment feeling as though staff were judgemental or completely detached from providing customers with a pleasant experience. All that being said, despite disappointing and cool customer service, the food, latte and organic lemonade were quite delicious. I would recommend this place for the superb quality of food but would provide a warning that the staff interaction may be a little off putting. I will try Two Whales again on my next visit to Newfoundland with the hope it will be much more positive.

Lovely small place with a very rustic and wonderful feel. Had a good cup of jumping bean coffee and a delicious partridgeberry brownie that was the perfect combination of taste, texture and sweetness. Has some gorgeous art for sale from local artists and some wonderful t-shirts and more! Quite busy as well so they'll be around for a long time to come I hope.

Excellent food and desserts. Friendly service.

We were a group of five , all had different paninis. The service was slow, 2 were completely finished their meal and the other 3 were still waiting for food for quite a while. The salads were 10 lettuce leaves with a hint of oil and vinegar, completely tasteless, the famous coleslaw was also tasteless. The paninis lacked everything, especially taste. We were expected to eat salads with a wooden spoon! Fingers worked better. The desserts were horrible, partridge berry brownie was oily and tasteless. The chocolate cake had a hint of chocolate but felt like you had coffee grounds in your mouth. The entire experience was horribly overpriced and you had to tip before you experienced any of this! We, a group of 5 from different parts of the island would not recommend this place to anyone.

Ally Fulmer

Awesome little coffee shop, with vegetarian and vegan options. Finally a non dairy latte in the small towns of newfoundland!

Chantelle Wollbaum

Best coffee on the island!

Jim Courville

My head almost exploded when we found a vegetarian spot in the woods of Newfoundland. So excited. When we arrived and saw them growing their own food, and serving top quality food, that was the cherry on top! Do note, this is not a cheap place to eat! It was very expensive, even for newfoundland. Prices here were 50% more than what they would be in Boston, MA, USA. Which also is an expensive place. It's worth it, to eat organic vegetarian food, just be prepared. Staff are awesome, and so nice. Baked goods are off the charts good.

Bryan Vanderkruk

Our experience was probably out of the norm, but our coffee order was forgotten and then we waited 20 minutes for sub par coffee... Suggest getting their espresso instead. The partridge berry brownie was excellent though.

Nick Bauer

Amazing spot for a lunch after a hike. All of the food was incredibly fresh and tasty (the coffee and desserts were especially awesome!!).

Nadine Robinson

Excellent baked goods. The door seemed locked... but they were open. A great stop after hiking the Skerwink trail.

(Translated) Excellent coffee and what about caramel brownies and delicious salt (Original) Excellant café et que dire des brownies caramel et sel délicieux

Steven Bradley

The sandwiches were smaller but much better than I expected. Worth trying if you're in the area.

Jonathan Butt

I went with 4 adults and tell kids. I was extremely impressed. There was greatly selection of local, fresh ingredients (you can see the farm next to the parking lot). They had a high chair, friendly service and even toys for the kids to play with while waiting.

Scott Whitehouse

Very cozy little coffee/tea shop with really delicious baked goods, like a huge salted caramel brownie. The drinks are great, but don't expect quick service here as it's quite busy, and if you sit down for service then those coming in for takeout after you will get served before you. Overall great spot for a stop and refreshing drink though, so I highly recommend you check it out.

(Translated) A real good surprise on the road: a small restaurant where you will find delicious paninis (a dozen recipes all more appetizing than the others) accompanied by fresh salad of their vegetable garden and a very good coleslaw, as well as some soups . The portions may not seem huge (especially in this country) but you will get enough with a dish and a dessert. Their desserts all look amazing, their carrot cake is probably the best I've had in my life! They have a wide menu of drinks, homemade lemonade and orangeade, their coffee is a real espresso coffee (very hard to find that in North America) and it's very good, they have a large amount of tea in jars behind the counter ..Being you go for a breakfast, a lunch, a snack or even just a coffee, do not hesitate, this is by far one of the best places I have eaten here! The staff is lovely and the place is quiet and bright.

Great coffee, great desserts and delicious vegetarian food!

Kevork Peltekian

Pretentious and overpriced. The panini was good, but French onion soup was a joke.

Stephanie Statz

Stumbled upon this place going to the Skerwink trail. This is a cute popular spot in Port Rexton with vegan/vegetarian options for their food choices. Had a panini and salad and it was delicious, they even split it up for us as we just needed a snack before hitting the trail. Their soups, though I didn't have one, also looked very tasty. And they offer a variety of desserts, the espresso brownie was most yummy. Would definitely go back.

We are thoroughly enjoying all the food options in Newfoundland but what a treat to find this fine coffee, vegetarian restaurant with many gluten free options including the Bollywood panini pictured here. And a socially and environmentally responsible mission statement. Garden outside. I love it!

Ana Caballero Mengibar

Wonderful coffee and food. I loved their moca and capuchino

Kaylah Mercer

The most beautiful little eco-friendly cafe ever! The staff are delightful. . A variety of treats for all. Their hazelnut latte is amazing!!

Lindsey Ross

Stopped in at random trying to find something to eat before the hike in East Trinity. Very pleasantly surprised! I had an excellent panini, salad and chili combo. Kept me going through the hike and the evening! The staff was great, and I loved the art space. Excellent atomosphere all in all. ????????????????????????

Randy Roberts

I don’t give many fives because, to me, a place needs to be very very special to deserve such a rating. Two Whales is such a place. It is an organic gem. The staff was so very friendly and our waitress went out of her way to make sure we were pleased and she was so accommodating. Last, but far from least, the food was deliciously prepared and plated.

Good coffee, quaint. Only complaint is that you have to walk through the entire dining area to order at the counter. This can feel a bit odd if your ordering to go because of the shape of the building.

Loved the mushroom pannini!

Every time that we head up to the Bonavista Peninsula, on our way to Port Union, we make a point of stopping in here for a great, light meal. They feature quite a nice collection of gluten-free treats, the soups are fantastic, the owners and staff are friendly, and, being in Newfoundland and Labrador, no one is a stranger. Please do just smile and meet a new friend, either one of the locals stopping in for a coffee or another tourist, or as we pronounce it her, torist. It's amazing the number of CFAs (Come From Aways) who, after visiting the area, end up staying.

Planned to have lunch here, it was very busy at 1:30pm on Tuesday. When we walked in, all tables were full but no one greeted us or informed us there would be some waiting. Very disappointing experience.

Lovely little place. Ordered a latte with oat milk along with a slice of orange, coconut cake. So Delicious! Learned about how the owners made Newfoundland there home and the story behind this cute cafe. Great food and drinks, occasional fresh produce for sale, along with and a few little local arts, crafts and books that make for great gifts. Definitely worth stopping by.

One of my favorite places in Trinity! Great coffee, espresso, tea, and homemade ice cream! Love the eco-conscious, fair trade, organic, home grown goodness here. Thanks for taking a holistic approach! Also, the live music on Saturdays from July to September is phenomenal. Great place, amazing staff.

So much to love about this spot. Convenient on the highway, lots of parking, sweet decor, friendly service and AMAZING vegan, vegetarian and gluten free food. Be sure to ask for the food menu (which is in addition to the chalkboard menu) and sit in to eat. For a small spot I was very impressed with their wide selection. And they were open daily! Their gardens made me "green" with envy. Oh, and ger the 50 cent discount for bringing your own mug. Great incentive to decrease waste!

Simon Ohayon

(Translated) Excellent restaurant. The meals are healthy, which is rare in the area, good and nutritious. The desserts are really divine, the homemade lemonade very good and they offer real coffee (not the fleet as elsewhere). Do not hesitate to stop there, plus all the staff is super nice. Must see. The wait for the paninis can be quite long, but in fairness the care that goes into the sandwich and the taste, presentation etc more than make up for it. It is great to see a business with their mission statement proudly posted on their wall. A must visit if you are anywhere near it.

Food was lacking flavour. Salad was a leaf lettuce with tasteless oil dressing, coleslaw was lack luster as well. Had panini with partridgeberry and brie which was just ok. Had partridgeberry brownie that was oily and flavorless. Lemonade and coffee was good. Very overpriced for what we got and quality of same. We were a group of 5 and I probably enjoyed mine the most. Two of us had our meal completed before the other three had theirs delivered.

This is a wonderful alternative treat. There are many healthy vegan and vegetarian options. The owners also grow their own vegetables as much as possible. Plus they also are community orientated and give donations from their mug sales to help the needy. I thought this was going to be a simple meal. It is now 8 months later and the experience has changed our lives. Two Whales serves delicious food and coffee, but is also a glimpse into something much deeper and exceptionally meaningful. Two Whales is about relationships within the community and living in balance with the planet. They are passionate about their deeper purpose and have written a recipe book about it. Stories of their journey are dispersed between the healthy, vegetarian recipes. Some of the stories have had me in stitches and been a source of inspiration. Two Whales is inspiring. Two Whales has helped change the way my family and I live. We will return to Newfoundland and the Two Whales Coffee Shop. Thank you to Lynn for taking us to this little jewel with a big heart.

Great place to stop for breakfast or lunch. The food is very well done. I had soup, salad, bread and a brownie (in separate visits) and all were excellent.
