Went because of the great reviews. Highly disappointed. Group of 3, Ordered a salad, pizza, grilled cheese , hot chocolate, hazelnut cappuccino and vanilla latte. Drinks weren’t good, No flavour. We requested to fix it, and they added so much that it wasn’t drinkable. Instead of grilled cheese we got two slices of toasted bread, we said we asked for it to be with cheese. So they took it, put a slice of cheese and gave it back. The bread was inedible, it was rock dry. Too bad, it’s in a good location. Will not return.

Great location near Assiniboine Park. Arrived at 10:30am on a Sunday with a group of 16 people. Staff were very friendly and accommodating. We were able to rearrange tables so we could all sit together. I had a hot chocolate and it was pretty good ... was offered whipped cream and chocolate drizzle if I wanted. Everyone in our group ordered something (drinks and/or food). I am not aware of any complaints.

One of FAVORITE coffee places in Winnipeg. Large space, with lounge chairs and big tables for studying and creating a mobile office. The staff has always been friendly and attentive. They sell they're custom roasted coffee in bags (whole bean and ground). I've had both and the Columbian is my favorite. Earthy, but not bitter. Smooth and even good while room temperature or cold. The soups and sandwiches are also great! I've eaten a fair share of paninis made by the staff behind the counter. They carry a small selection of baked goods: muffins, scones, tarts, and samosas just because, lol. Only thing I would like to see is maybe some homemade donuts!

One of my favourite places to be when there isn't an event happening at the park, if there is, forget about it. This place fills up quick. Nice atmosphere, comfortable, and a really decent menu to go along with the coffee. Nice patio too.

So there's alot of talk about this place and I've been here 3 times. The service counter only has one person on it so they ae le scrambling around, there is little alternative food items, which they write all over the window gluten free options, I counted 3 items and honestly they are not exciting to me. I guess it has a nice social vibe. But it's nothing significant other than a patio. Patios are cool.

Our coffees and teas were great however the breakfast sandwiches took a long time to be made, and they used processed cheese which was a bit disappointing. It has been a regular stop for us on the way out of town however due to the long wait for food I think we're going to start trying other places. Overall, ok but not great. I wanted it to be great, and the staff is nice.

Overrated. The place was full of flies and the staff said it wasn’t their job to kill them. They handed me a fly swatter to take back to my table. It feels like nothing has been updated in a long time! The staff is not trained on the cash register and what products they sell. Even simple things like bringing our coffee to the table was not done. The coffee was so bad we didn’t finish it. DO NOT RECOMMEND!

This place is pretty decent. Close to Assiniboine Park. Decent sandwiches and salads. Their flatbread pizzas are pretty good too. They bring in decent sweets from a local bakery which are pretty good (brownies and apple jacks are tasty). Or you can just hit up next door for icecream. Small patio in the summer... Though make sure you grab a table that doesn't face Portage Ave.

Service is abnormally slow. I understand a busy barrista, but the second one was on the phone having a long conversation. Lack of service alone is enough sour a visit. However the busy barrista was quick to serve after serving a previous customer. Aside from that, the Latte of good quallity. The food selection is of a large variety witha mix of savoury and sweet foods for order. This location can accomedate large crowds.

This is an excellent coffee shop...probably better than starbucks in my opinion. The decor is great and food is homemade and awesome! I had the Joe Black's Special Pizza which was perfect. Will definitely go again! There are about 2 tables which would be appropriate for small group studies. Also they have a few couches and other regular seating. Pretty impressive. Parking is a bit of a struggle since there is no dedicated parking that I'm aware of. Might have to park on the nearby street.

Not my favourite of coffee shops. Coffee is average, service tentative, radio music is of poor selection, and all "treats" are highly priced for size and city comparison. The large unlabeled salt and pepper shakers located next to the cream and milk look suspiciously like sugar and cinnamon, and I witnessed a poor woman who mistook it for just that. Additionally the milk and cream were sitting in direct sunlight on a messy bar. Bathrooms are unnecessarily gender binary, which could easily be addressed. One stars for good location, gluten free options, and some fair trade dark roast options

Snacks and coffee we pretty good. Employee's seemed a little out of it when I was there. The were 5 adults in our group 2 of us we served our brownies on plates and 2 were just handed their snacks still wrapped in plastic. Weird! 4 of us received our hot beverages in mugs and one was given in a take out cup. Most of our stuff was picked up at the counter and some served at our table. One drink we didn't even order was brought to the table. Pretty sure I paid for it though! Because I was asking questions about that drink but decided on something else. Might give this place another chance because they are in a great location.

I come here at least once a week to study, and things were great up until recently. some staff members over these past few weeks have made me feel unwelcome and an inconvenient presence, and that's disheartening. I'm not a big eater, so I usually get tea and a snack. On good days, I get a breakfast sandwich or the day's special. The food here is decent. However, I've been uncomfortable here too often. I won't be coming here again.

The location is really what makes this coffee shop worth going to. While I wouldn't complain about the menu or the coffee, these aren't anything to write home about. The interior is adequatly comfortable (gives me a Gilmore girls vibe) and allows for a enjoyable sitting experience. The location however is by far one of the best I've had the pleasure of patronizing.

Nice location. Music entertainment was great! But...decaf was old..tea was Presidents Choice which is ok for at home, barely. Cake..didn't eat it...whip cream topping was so old it was firm like wax. I would have returned it but didn't want to put up a stink. The price of their products are not the issue. But for $13.00 the 4 sq inches of cake and the decaf should be fresh. The tea should be anything but Presedents Choice...seriously.

Went there to have coffee with a friend and we realized there was live music. A lady performing and reading poems yelled at everyone to stop talking so that she could sing. It's a coffee shop not a library! People go for coffee to talk. I would suggest not having her back. The latte was mediocre.

I tried their lunch combo menu and ordered the crispy chicken wrap that came with chicken noodle soup and separately, a caramel mocha. The mocha was incredible smooth with excellent caramel flavour throughout. However, the food was lackluster. The wrap was boring, with far too much ranch dressing and the entire thing thing felt cold. Also, the chicken noodle soup had absolutely no herbs or spices. It would not hurt the soup to put some salt in there, and maybe cook the carrots all the way through. Stick to the beverages and avoid the lunch menu

Went here on a first date. I was so nervous I dumped my entire London Fog on my lap. Staff was awesome! Mopped up my mess and got me a new tea before I was even out of the washroom. Made an awkward situation a little more bearable. You guys ROCK!

This place was stupidly overpriced for what you got. Evidently it was part of their business model. Make people think it's really cool by training the staff to be distant and inattentive, then charge way too much for the food.

Fantastic location right on portage by the Portage entrance to Assiniboine Park. Both indoor and outdoor seating. The indoor seating was kind of a mishmash of older couches and chairs that mixed what looked like leftover hotel lobby grade chairs with cheap Ikea furniture which actually works to create sort of a calm and cozy atmosphere. The prices are maybe at a Starbucks level for coffee. What really killed it for me though was the calm mellow decorations with low lighting were offset by pop music including dance and rap from a local radio station being played through the radio. Also, I feel the staff could of greeted me when I entered instead of staring at me while I looked around at the various items in the counter display hoping I'd start the verbal part of the transaction as I was the only customer at the counter.

Very homey atmosphere. Located across Assiniboine park. Wide variety of coffees and teas and many other types of drinks and food items. Excellent customer service. I prefer this place over any chain of coffee shops. Beautiful outdoor patio as well. Highly recommended!

Great little nook for the area, view of assiniboine park. Good for reading a book or getting some work done. The coffee is pretty good, but I find it a little expensive compared to places like forth where the coffee is much tastier. Overall recommend it.

Brutal experience... Ordered a Vanilla Latte and Americano with steamed milk... It wasn't made fresh, they poured some cold ingredients into a cup then transferred to another one to steam the drink hot... Vanilla Latte was horrible... All you could taste was syrup... Americano tasted like water... No espresso flavour at all...

Yesterday I witnessed a mean and cruel action by staff. A very pregnant Mom and her "I obviously really need to go" toddler came in and asked for the child to use the Washroom. The cold heartless woman whom another staff referred to as "The Boss" refused. The Mother acknowledged the sign on the door prohibiting the use of the Washroom by non-customers, but, tried to reason with the woman that this was an emergency. The woman still refused. The little girl was holding herself and squirming with need. The visibly upset Mom and crying child left. REALLY...a 2 yr old child is refused? Whatever happened to goodwill..or perhaps even an act of kindness? My husband (a well-established St James businessperson) & I live in the area. Our adult children & their families do too. You can rest assured that not only will this incident be told over and over again, but, we will never darken the doors of this establishment again. Shame on "The Boss" and shame on Joe Black Café... Oh, and by the way, about 15 minutes later, I ran into the Mom on Portage Avenue and asked if they were ok....yes, she said...Star Grill had very graciously and without any hesitation permitted the child to use their Washroom.
