This restaurant is a very popular with people from the area. We come here to eat with old friends as this is one of a few which provide true gluten free food. Our friend needs this and we find the menu has grown over the years to allow our friend to enjoy a great variety of food as well as allowing us to order our plates as well. Service is always pleasant food is well prepared and all done in a timely manner. We can sit and visit for as long as we need to without being bothered. Prices are acceptable. All in all a great place for a meal!

The food was good, a little bland though. I have food allergies and they were able to accommodate with ease. My kids were able to find good they liked, my only complaint was that the food on the buffet wasn't labelled well so it was hard to tell what each dish was or what was in it. I've been a customer of Empress for years, and it was always great food. However over the past couple of years things have been on a downward slide. The food quality became hit and miss. And now it's just bad. I thought ordering on a Friday would be safe because the food would be fresh. It's the worst yet. The chicken in the chicken balls was tough like rubber. Even the strawberry s&s sauce was tasteless and watery. The ginger beef was completely tasteless and fatty. It was so bad that I actually threw out about 2/3 of the container. They have a serious problem in their kitchen and after about 7 years of loyal patronage I'm going to look for another Chinese food restaurant next time we order. I won't buy Empress again. I feel bad writing a negative review because I used to love the food here and the owner is so nice.

It was great once, we ordered it the other day for takeout. We have a slightly older menu at home and got a new one with our order, i thought they made a mistake, but apparently they just raised all their prices The ginger beef medium tasted great like always but lacking the beef. Must of been cut razor thin. The sweet and sour chicken balls lots of breading and the chicken was very small pieces that must of been from frozen chicken. Sadly we won't be ordering anymore.

One of the best Chinese food restaurants I have found in Winnipeg and the only one where I have ever found Strawberry Sweet & Sour sauce! Staff are always friendly and take out orders are usually ready quickly if you're in a hurry.

I ordered the combo for one. It was sooo oily it was not edible I did my best to soak up the oily but it was soaked right through the entire chicken ball. Fired rice has CORN NIBLETS!! Lol and the rice is half raw. If you enjoy drinking cooking oil order from here. I’d try get a refund but I was at work and I did not have any time left. Thanks for wasting my money and lunch break.

Very delicate and flavourful Chinese-style food, advertised to be made without MSG and only sparing amounts of salt, so a good choice for those trying to avoid these. The dishes were beautifully garnished with slices of fresh citrus, and vegetables, the Lemon Chicken was very tasty with an authentic lemon tang and the Ginger Beef was delicious, with the ginger flavour blooming slowly, intense but not overpowering.

Always a great experience here! Have been going to this restaurant for a few years now. Service is very good, food is extremely tasty. They use no MSG in the food here and you can tell by the taste and your stomach(MSG makes me feel sick). The owners are very good as well, remembers the whole family from the couple of times that the whole family has been there. Match the no MSG, great taste, friendly owners and staff and you have Empress of China! Highly recommend!

Ordered after receiving a menu in the mail. Couple of dishes caught my eye. 2 of the 4 dishes literally did not contain what was listed in the ingredients. Empress fried rice contained half of the ingredients listed. Here’s the best part. After calling to ask what may of occurred; they assured me all ingredients were included… Brilliant! Poor quality food, less than friendly service.

The prices of the food are similar to other Chinese restaurants but the portions are much smaller. You also have to pay for each small bowl of rice unlike other Chinese restaurants where the rice is free or you just pay one time and get free refills. The food tasted about the same as other restaurants and that's being generous. Would not recommend eating here.

By far the best bubble tea and fruit tea location in all of River East, North Kildonan and East St Paul. If you are looking for a quality drink equal and even surpassing any of the big chain bubble tea joints in the south end of the city, they have you covered. The milk is tea is genuinely brewed and steeped. All fruit teas are made with fresh fruit. Boba is always fresh and soft.

Big NO. Small tiny serving of rice for 2people. Sauce for the six tiny shrimp had rice in it. Was it left over from someones dish? Almond chicken ..should be called lets fish for the chicken. Three almonds and chicken so tough, it can break your teeth. The ginger beef everyone raving about was so tough I could not chew it. First time, Last time. Expensive for what you get. This is comparable to Food Court Chinese Food. Awful.

Christmas Eve buffet was a HUGE disappointment and waste of money. Food was slow to come out of the kitchen and the meal itself was poor quality and underwhelming in taste. For the money spent we could have had a better meal from the frozen Chinese entry meals sold at Safeway. This restaurant has slowly declined over the years and sadly it has hit a point where we won't be back.

Last night was Christmas Eve and had family over for dinner. We were to pick up our food for 7 pm. They called to say it would be 1 /2 hour late. Didnt get our order until after 8. Hughes lineups and lots of angry people. Then sat down to dinner and every dish was was tasteless. Meal was terrible. They also gave us the wrong sauce for our chicken. Such a disappointment . Won't make this mistake again. Cross this restaurant off the list.

Very dissatisfied and disappointed with both the food, and the service. We ordered some dishes and it lacked flavour and was extremely dry. In addition, they gave us the wrong dish and when we called back to resolve the issue, they argued and refused to give us a refund. All they would offer is a discount in the future but we will not be going back after this experience. I was intrigued by the gluten free options, but I’ve definitely had better gluten free Chinese in the city. Recommend you don’t waste your money.

I have ordered food from Empress for years, at least twice a month. Recently I ordered honey mustard chicken which was always a favorite. They obviously recooked the chicken because when my son bit into it, he cracked a tooth, the chicken piece was hard as a rock. This is now a $400.00 cost to him since he does not have a dental plan. I took the chicken order back because we could not eat it. The owner gave me a refund. When I called to let her know his tooth was cracked, all she could say was, sorry, the chicken was soft". I kept that piece...not soft!! Despite the fact that their food is good, I no longer have faith in whether the food is as fresh as they claim. That was OLD chicken, definitely cooked more than once. I will no longer order food from there.

Ming helped me pick the items from the menu and also helped me pick some items that were gluten free as I am Celiac. All of the employees mentioned the food was very delicious and well prepared. It was delivered to our shop very promptly. Thank you again for helping me make our 2019 Christmas Party a success. I will definitely be ordering from this restaurant again.

Some interesting sauce flavors but I think they took the easy way out in cooking - 2 different dishes - expected green peppers and onion with 1 but expected other vegetables like broccoli and cauliflower in the chow mein - exactly the same veggies on both. Made the chow mein very disappointing. Chicken in chow mein was very overcooked - possibly reheated. Beef in other dish was tender. Server never asked how the food was thru entire meal and not even when paying bill. I rarely go here as I've been disappointed each time. Took a chance to try again today - disappointed again.

We spend on average of $200 approx per order 10 times a year including our annual Christmas dinner. This year, when it was late I called to ask where it might be. They replied that the were sorry that they believed it was a pick up order. I said I understood but would the food be hot when it arrived. They assured us it would. $250 with tip. Food was not only cold, deep fried stuff was mush, two of the dishes were completely wrong. My wife vegetarian dishes had shrimp AND beef. We I called to sort it out the said they could remake our food.........IN 2.5 HOURS! Only financial compensation was pack it up and we will refund it all, leaving kids and family without supper. I WILL NEVER SPEND A SINGLE PENNY AT EMPRESS OF CHINA AGAIN.

I went inside for supper with my boyfriend. The place was completely empty during g the supper hour. We ordered wonton soup to start. It arrived in the smallest bowl with the wontons clumped together still frozen in the middle. The price was beyond reasonable for what we got. The main dishes arrived only half the plate with food while the other half plate all garnish. Very disappointing. I fully reccomend Comodo on McLeod ave and Fortune Cooking on St. James if you want a satisfying meal that is more than worth the price and flavour.

My wife is celiac and it has been a long time since she had American Chinese food. She absolutely loved it. Had the lemon chicken, ginger beef, Cantonese chow mein, mixed veg, and some egg rolls. They obviously are very good at keeping the gluten away. She's giving it 5/5, I'd say 4/5 compared to "gluten full" Chinese, but still quite good.

This is my favourite place for Chinese food in Winnipeg. My favourite dish is always the ginger beef. No other restaurant has come close to the ginger beef of Empress. They're always really clean and they have lots of seating so you never have to wait. The only thing I would like to see are change tables in the bathroom. I had to change my baby on the floor. Not the first time I've had to do that but most places offer that basic amenity in this day and age.

Me and my wife order from Empress of China fairly regularly. I've seen comments about how good the food was before the new owners took over (a few years ago), and the good news is there is new owners since then, and they seem to have a goal to bring back those 4 and 5 star reviews. We recommend the Ginger Beef, and the Chicken Balls w/Strawberry sauce are ridiculously good. Quality food, a gluten free menu, with reasonable and comparable prices, well worth the call.

Not sure where their food photos came from as the diced almond chicken was mere morsels and the whole $2 for a small bowl of rice to share amongst four people and $2.45 for a pot of tea only to learn it is charged per cup per person is a complete ripoff and unheard of. Had we known that our bill would be $8 for a pot of tea we would have just shared the one cup. The waitresses are nice but the male owner couldn't be bothered to thank us for coming and walked away despite us keeping our politeness as a lesson learned. $55 for lean pork that looked completely different than normal red tender meat and strange over battered shrimp to tiniest bowls of consomme soup, completely overpriced and you're better off going to a food court.

I pre-ordered the food for delivery at 6:30. Method of payment was to be interact at the door. At 6:00, they called and asked if I could pay by credit card instead as the two debit machines were “out on delivery”...Technically, this is not my problem but I agreed to pre-pay by credit card. The girl I was talking to outright asked me if I was going to tip, which I did and it was added to the total of the bill. The food arrived shortly after and was absolutely terrible. The spring rolls were icy cold and only half cooked, the wonton soups were also ice cold AND the food itself was ice cold. The sweet and sour chicken balls came with absolutely zero sweet and sour sauce. Their stir-fried fresh vegetables consisted of 95% broccoli that was as hard as a rock, one piece of celery, one piece of mini corn and a tiny sliver of carrot with a few mushrooms. Ridiculous!! Same with the second combination meal. The fried rice was also tasteless. This past summer, I ordered food from there as well and, again, it was cold and extremely bland. I will never, ever again order from this establishment. It was $70 wasted. I would give this place zero stars if I had the option… They don’t deserve a one star rating.

Went to my sons to celebrate his birthday and was anxious for our regular Chinese food dinner. Perfect timing ?? I arrived just in time... I happened to notice that it wasn’t from our regular place?? My son told me they were gonna try something different. He’s paying so I’m in. And apparently it isn’t a cheap place. $$$$$. I was quite surprised that they forgot the rice REALLY?? No white rice and only 1 of 2 fried rice. This was for 8 people. I could go on & on. But I will not lower myself and only call it like I see it. Basically a terrible waste of good money. On not so good food. I would recommend anywhere else and would not refer friends.n

Love the food here especially the deep fried wontons - it's like eating dessert first they are so good. I go there a fair bit and have tried many dishes and have liked them all.

The food here is amazing and the service is great. I order take out all the time and its always fresh and delicious. I don't go anywhere else for Chinese in the city. And they can do almost their entire menu gluten free which is a huge plus.

Tried this place when it first opened, hit and miss. Cold rice, so we didn't go back for a yr. Just recently gave it another try was very impressed, meal was hot, fast, the place is clean and owners are very nice and accommodating.

Food was bland and disappointing.my girlfriend loves everything seafood, but she couldn't eat a single thing from the 18$ seafood hot pot we ordered . Blandnand flavorless food unless it's drenched in sweet and sour sauce. Almost 80$ I paid for something I wouldn't want to eat for free.

$63.50 for food that we ended up tossing. Fried rice was mushy. Lemon sauce for our chicken had no tang at all. I asked for some spice to be added to the noodle dish.. nothing added. Szechuan beef was tough.

We ordered from The Empress Of China for an early Christmas dinner. The large order was ready for pickup at 5:30pm just as promised, it was securely packed in a box. It was piping hot when we got it home, each container was filled to the brim and delicious. They sent plenty of sauce for the lemon chicken and chicken balls, three containers full. Their strawberry sauce is the best!!!! The chicken balls were large and crispy and filled with a good sized piece of white meat, my absolute favorite along with the crunchy broccoli in garlic sauce. Shanghai noodles were wonderful too, we should have ordered two more. We’ve always been happy with the food but never had such a large order before and it was perfect as usual. Thank you to the chef and staff.
