I requested a handyman on Thumbtack in May, and CMB Cleaning replied. Realizing this was a cleaning service and not a handyman, I declined the bid, but Chuck was so insistent that he would do a great job for me that I relented (mistake #1). I gave him 1/2 the money down to re-side my garage using siding I had stored in my garage (long story). His help, his "kids" whom he claimed were adults, had clearly never sided before. They put up unmatching siding (literally, two different brands), cut jagged edges, failed to match pieces up, hung up pieces of siding with holes, and sat on the gate of my fence, which rendered it permanently unable to close without first jimmying the gate. Chuck had a good attitude, but a lousy work ethic. He failed to show up for two weeks, first because of weather and then because he didn't feel good. When I asked him to redo some of the work, he departed for the day and left two of his "sons" who had never sided before to work on the job. After a full day, they had put up 2 rows of siding on the short side of a single car garage. Then the request for more materials started coming in, more corner pieces, more nails, paint, boards, etc. Even though I was frustrated because they left materials all over my yard, gates open, and even the cans when I relented and purchased them water on a particularly hot day, I still gave them the benefit of the doubt. But then I came home to see the work he had done hanging brand new boards I had purchased. He didn't even bother making the boards fit flush together. After a minimum of 3 weeks on the job, not only was the job unfinished, but every time I pointed out a problem, his repairs would get worse. In addition to bad cuts, lousy seams, and inadequate nails, the siding didn't lie flat on the bottom of the garage. Chuck told me not to worry because he could push dirt up against is. Overall, it was a lousy experience, and I realized that the more money I invested in Chuck the more I was throwing good money after bad. (By the way, he also asked for an advance on his final payment and I, stupidly, paid him an additional $100.) Once I asked him to stop, you guessed it, he took a month--a month!--to remove his materials from my property, including a large table saw in my garage. After several weeks of storing it for free without permission on my property, he became insistent that I make myself available to him so he could pick it up and then wouldn't show. Then someone started emailing me to pick up the materials without identifying who he was, just that he has worked with Chuck. The experience was a nightmare. And I feel like I've been working with a grifter. If I were a high school teacher teaching an introductory class on siding, I would have given him a "D" for the work he did; as a hired professional, he would get and "F." Do me a favor, and don't let my experience be in vain. Don't hire this guy. For any job. Ever. By the way, in the time since I hired him, he has been banned from Thumbtack. I've got photos and would love to share them, but can't figure out how.
