Do you like history and knowing events that helped shaped Canada? If so this is your spot. There are lots of things to see and experience. This is a reconstruction of what Fortress Louisburg was like. It is is filled with authentic recreations and animators. The animators are all amazing. These are people who are acting a role from that specific time period. They are all over the fortress and they have lots of interesting things to tell. Highly recommend going to Fortress Louisburg.

Well worth the drive out here, Fort Louisbourg features actors in period costumes and an immersive experience, allowing you to wander the buildings and discover the village on your own. Re-enactments were engaging -- a good trick, when they have to compete with the stunning scenery of this park. Recommended.

There are several free activities spaced throughout the day as well. We took a walking tour with Hilda first thing, and she was spectacular! Great place carrying a lot of Canada's history! Big shoutout to the Park Canada employee that went his own way to give us a "private tour" ( we were 4 visitors) as we went during winter season (down season) and were told most of the site was closed to visitors. During summer there are A LOT more activities, the fortress of louisbourg living to its fullest! We still had a very enjoyable visit thanks to the guide and we will definitely come back next summer and enjoy it's full potential ! Thanks !

This is a part of our Canadian history that everyone should see, especially our children. It clearly shows how some very resilient and special people made the initial first steps to establishing our great country. Special thanks must go to our Federal Government for spending the money to restore this historic site. Thanks must also go to the multitude of Maritimers who contributed their many skills toward the restoration project. This is a must see for Canadians.

I really wish this site would make itself at least partially pet friendly. There's plenty of room. Pets could at least be walked around the perimeter of the building's- not in the buildings. Many people like myself who travel for long periods of time travel with their pets. They could create a kennel facility. There are less reenactments until after Canada day.that wasn't clear to me at the beginning of the tour. Overall this restoration was amazing and extensive. I spent about four and a half hours.

I love that everyone is in period and will not even discuss the fortress as a historical landmark. The salt cod drying on ranks to the bread being baked, everything is exactly as it would have been on that date in history.

One of the nicest ways to spend a sunny afternoon. We came in the off season but will be back again in June. The place is amazing! So much hard work must go into it. We loved walking the grounds and checking out the historic buildings. There is a moat and drawbridge! I had no idea. The staff are so friendly and helpful as well. Can't wait to go back!

Fantastic recreation of the original fortress. We spent 4 hours exploring with our three young children; they were enthralled. Be sure to stop in and buy some fresh baked bread before they sell out. We were able to camp here as part of their new program and it was amazing. This is one of my favorite parks in Canada and being able to camp in period tents with only a few other people and see the park after hours was a once in a lifetime experience. The staff was very friendly and helpful and we were thrilled we were able to do this!

Fantastic place. A lot of history and a very faithful recreation of the fortress. However they are currently in their off season which means you can only go in one building and there are no tour guides. Still a cool place to walk around and learn a bit about the area. The movie about the French soldiers was entertaining

A great restoration project marking a watershed in Canada's history. Staffed by enthusiastic guides, traditionally dressed, friendly, knowledgeable and willing to share their experiences with visitors. As well as the beautifully restored buildings there a wide range of exhibitions, pageants and entertainment. One day was hardly enough to fully explore this on going project.

Enjoyable day at an impressive location. Paid extra for a guided tour which was a good introduction. Food choice and quality should be better, it might be vaguely-authentic 1700s-style but we still had to pay 2017 prices. I pitied the poor guy that ordered the bread and cheese and got 4 small cubes.

This site gets better each time I visit. HIGHLY recommended if you've never been. If you have, go back regularly as there is always new stuff. The staff are fantastic, and the site is well kept and always interesting. LOVE the fact that they allow the Cape Breton Bike Rally do the "Storm the Fortress" each August!

We spent around five hours here and we didn't do any of the guided tours; that was just us wandering and exploring with a map and an app. Every single costumed staff member that we met had incredibly detailed information to share in an interactive experience. It was amazing. We actually found ourselves wishing we could have stayed longer. With the staff, sometimes I felt a little bit like I was the only one who didn't know my lines....but on the whole they were an extremely informative bunch of people all acting in a massive theatre. We stopped into the bakery and bought a "low class" loaf of bread. It was whole grain rye mix and it was delicious. We ate it warm right out of the bag as we walked. At one point we bumped into an elderly couple, the gentleman was sitting on one of the benches while his lady was deciding where to go next. He interrupted her to say, you know - I WANT to find out where we can get THAT bread! :) It's a Parks Canada site and so every attempt is made to make every bit of it accessible to all. We found a few places that would be difficult, but for the most part, whatever your ability - there is a way for you. We walked out to the "Ruins Walk" and found that very enjoyable as well - the end of the "official path" is the end of the accessible area; after that it's a wish path, (a path where people wish to go) or, as my family would say, a goat track.

The Fortress of Louisbourg is a National Historic Site of Canada and the location of a one-quarter partial reconstruction of an 18th-century French fortress at Louisbourg on Cape Breton Island, Nova Scotia. Its two sieges, especially that of 1758, were turning points in the Anglo-French struggle for what today is Canada. The original settlement was made in 1713, and initially called Havre à l'Anglois. Subsequently, the fishing port grew to become a major commercial port and a strongly defended fortress. The fortifications eventually surrounded the town. The walls were constructed mainly between 1720 and 1740. By the mid-1740s Louisbourg, named for Louis XIV of France, was one of the most extensive (and expensive) European fortifications constructed in North America.[2] It was supported by two smaller garrisons on Île Royale located at present-day St. Peter's and Englishtown. The Fortress of Louisbourg suffered key weaknesses, since it was erected on low-lying ground commanded by nearby hills and its design was directed mainly toward sea-based assaults, leaving the land-facing defences relatively weak. A third weakness was that it was a long way from France or Quebec, from which reinforcements might be sent. It was captured by British colonists in 1745, and was a major bargaining chip in the negotiations leading to the 1748 treaty ending the War of the Austrian Succession. It was returned to the French in exchange for border towns in what is today Belgium. It was captured again in 1758 by British forces in the Seven Years' War, after which its fortifications were systematically destroyed by British engineers. The British continued to have a garrison at Louisbourg until 1768. The fortress and town were partially reconstructed in the 1960s and 1970s, using some of the original stonework, which provided jobs for unemployed coal miners. The head stonemason for this project was Ron Bovaird. The site is operated by Parks Canada as a living history museum. The site stands as the largest reconstruction project in North America.

Wonderful recreation of the fortress town from the late 1700s. All the staff we spoke with were very knowledgeable on any aspect of life at the fortress or even the politics of the time. Enjoyed a simple lunch at Hotel de la Marine, served with one spoon for all courses just like the commoners would have eaten in days gone by. Also, we did the Fortress Rum Tasting Experience. You get a half ounce shot of rum and mild rum citrus punch and a little lesson on social status and drinking back in the day.

It was a dreary wet day that we visited, but the reenactors were all chatty and informative. It's a great site with interesting history. I have to say that we particularly enjoyed the rum tasting. It felt like an authentic tasting :)

interesting fortress. the staff and interns stick to their theme and the conversations were pretty much as though in the past. We were stopped by the guards at the entrance and were questioned where we belong. when we said united states, they said "never heard of it". we then understood that they are enacting as if in the past and that we should say we belong to the french and if not the king will jail us for 6-8 months. It was hilarious as we started figuring their attitude. the information booklet was very helpful in understanding the buildings and their importance in the fortress. we had a nice time here.

Such awesome history and a great place to explore. The guided tour was also super informative and gave us a good basis to explore from after. Make sure you have at least hours (probably more like 4 or 5) or you won't have nearly enough time to see things.

The best and biggest fortifications in North America! We always have a great time. Allow yourself the whole day to explore the village, fortifications and have a meal. We were there during a reenactment weekend and the participants were true to the era and extremely knowledgeable. It really is a beautiful must see. (Or stay overnight!)

The 3 hours I had alloted for the visit was too short. Even though they had a lot of exhibits closed there was a lot to take in. The staff were extremely informative. They present presented their stories like they were in that time and with enthusiasm. It didn't seem like it was just their "job". I could see me visiting again after covid, however, spend most of the day exploring. There are also trails that you can take to see old ruins, original path of the town folk. Bring comfy foot wear as there is lots of walking. Some parts require you to walk on grass. It is not a good place for heals. Also... Some of the grass is on a hill, it could be slippery slippery.

There is lots of snacks available on site and there is a couple of restaurants so if you forget to pack a lunch do not worry but I recommend trying the homemade bread

I'm a history buff, so I'm mixed about this place. Great intentions here. It is an important historic site for Canada, so if you're around here you should go. They really do try to be authentic. Just remember, this is all a reconstruction. You can't really rush too much here, I'd say you can do it in 1 hour if you jog between building. Expect to spend 2 hours plus to really explore and take in the site.

Amazing place for all ages. Took a gaggle of kids here ages 2, 4, 6, 7 & 8 (my kids and their cousins) plus us 4 adults and had a great time. The kids enjoyed it so much they're asking when we're coming back. I knew my kids would enjoy it but I was worried their interest would drop off shortly into the excursion, not the case at all. They loved it start to finish. Extremely cool place, the amount of work that's gone into this historically accurate recreation is bananas.

My mom, brother, his girlfriend and I went as a vacation. It was nice even with the fog. Getting to experience some parts of history were really cool! There were people dressed in period clothing and we got to learn about a bunch of different topics regarding the Louisburg area and its history. I liked getting to see a real lime kiln.

What a fantastic place! It was like stepping back into history. Great efforts of restoration have been taken here. Everything about this place was spectacular, and the 'townsfolk' were excellent in amplifying the whole experience, even the soldiers to 'keep the peace' within the city walls! With the smell of the the salty sea breeze, the vegetation, animals, baked goods, blacksmith fires in the air, it wasn't difficult to imagine the bustling of this community or how the ships & boats would have filled the beautiful harbour as a 17-18th centuries trading hub with the Fortress of Loiusbourg overlooking it all. The governors quarters are an experience in itself and should not be overlooked. I felt as if I had time travelled and truly, couldn't get enough. Visited 9/2/17. Very cool place. Free admission due the 150th anniversay, so that was a plus for our party of 5. Very clean, fun and engaging for everyone (2yo,8yo,parents & senior). Easy walking around up higher near the top for good views, or thru town. Staff was very nice and knowledgeable, don't miss out on speaking with them. Highlight was cannon firing at 310pm. 2yo handled well, but you definitely feel the BOOM! Animals were quite chatty, no barnyard smell, but watch out for goose poop on the walk in from the bus if you have a runner. We waited no longer than 5 mins for bus to/from main bldg. Clean bathrooms. Parking lot 2 was most convenient b/c was right next to the his drop off point.

Amazing reproduction of a1700's fortress. The staff is in period costume and character. They put on some good shows and provide you with a solid understanding of what like was like back then. They even have a restaurant where you can order food from the day.

Very high effort and love went into this. We spend two hours here with the family without a second of being bored. Parking has to be done off campus and the a bus shuttle is being provided every 15min. They close at 5pm so better come before 3pm as 2hours is the minimum that I would recommend.

Great to be back this year and find a lot more open. The interpreters are great. They love to stop and talk and share what life was like back then. They really make it fun to visit. There was a woman in a garden explaining what all the plants are used for, how they are preserved for winter etc. Every one has taken time to learn who their character is. Grandson and I had a great lunch from the Cafe and enjoyed seeing the cannon fired at noon. Thanks for another fun visit.

For a fort it’s actually pretty lame but it’s still a really cool place, re-enactments and plenty to explore, you can even camp out over night there which was a unique experience

There's so much to see here. Plan on spending an entire day and try to do a bit of research ahead of time so you'll be able to prioritize better. Bring a hat, sunscreen and wear good shoes. There is a walking tour at 10:30, so if you get there early enough to get tickets, that's a good way to start. There are walking tours later in the day also. We saw the military stuff first, some by the entrance gate and then to the King's Bastion as well as the governor's house, the church and the barracks. Fascinating. Then on to the town. This is a living history site so there are people throughout who can give you details about the time period. Lunch is served three places, basic soup lunch, more substantial a la carte lunch and then a full count lunch for $27.99. we opted for the middle level and enjoyed our lunch and good conversation with our table neighbors. We also walked the Ruins Trail which was interesting, but did involve some rough and uneven terrain, so be prepared. No flip flops. You also need to be on the lookout for the point of interest signage. They're a bit off the trail, but worth finding. Staff and volunteers at the site were very helpful.

Really great place to visit, no matter how hot or warm the weather is else where in Cape Breton s normally always chilly or foggy. Which often adds to the cool effects of time traveling. In the past when visiting the fortress there was a lot more volunteers playing the roles was a bit disappointing not as many this time around

If you are thinking about coming here, don't think, just do it. We had a great time, it was a great experience - a wonderful piece of history. You need to park at the visitors centre and after you pay you get your bracelet and get on one of their buses. The buses leave every 15 minutes so you won't be waiting long. Once you're there you're free to walk around on your own, or they also offer tours (which are extra but cheap) we chose to walk around on our own. There's so much to see there and we had a lot of fun. Expect to spend a few hours there if you want to see all it has to offer.

Attended my brother's wedding here. Was a great experience, the coordinator, Kyle Allen, was extremely accomodating and helpful. Everything went off very smoothly, and Kyle even lined up an impromptu ghost tour of the fortress for those that stuck around till dark. Considering that COVID has likely wreaked havoc on all the tourist places like this, I have to say that we thoroughly enjoyed our time here. You can spend a couple days going through all the various displays and walks and really dig into the place, or you can stop and get the gist in half a day. The best part was that it wasn't just buildings and plaques, but there were actors playing roles so that when you looked in a room or went into a house in the fortress there were scenes played out and interactions with the actors. Everyone was exceptionally friendly and events were always offered in French or English. The canon firing ceremony was well done, the small band was excellent and drilled well. There are guided tours, motorized tours, or just walk and explore. Some of the gift shop stock was a bit scarce, but again this place would have been closed for most of the past year plus and had little revenue to feed into itself. All in all I think it was a great experience and hope that the visitors start coming back in droves once more. There are destination chargers for EVs, the parking lot we were in P2, I believe, had them installed but not powered, yet another tourist saw our electric car and mentioned another lot had them powered already. Excellent place to visit for an entire day. Lots to see and do, so bring some spending money. The bread is excellent and $5 for a large loaf makes a great snack to pick up to keep you going through the day. Love musket and canon drills are free to watch, for an extra fee you can fire both of these weapons. Rum tasting and other activities and guided tours are also available. Staff are awesome and bilingual. Would recommend even if it is a bit out of the way.

Aside from it being super windy on the day we went, everything was great about this place. Initially we didn't plan to go, but one of our boat tours were cancelled, but this place was totally worth spending an afternoon. Friendly staff (that were dressed up) were there to answer any questions and to take pictures with you. I was there last when I was a child. It was both nostalgic and fascinating to be back again. I enjoyed watching the blacksmith and looking at all the old tapestries and furniture. It was a foggy and rainy day, but I thought it gave it a more mysterious look. The only thing I did not enjoy was the fact my friend and I got caught in a downpour(which was not their fault at all) there and I had no umbrella or jacket, but they sold ponchos and rain coats on site.

Went this July and I can’t still get over this place. It was a truly amazing part of Parks Canada to visit, so worth it. I enjoyed stepping back in time and getting to spend time with people dressed up in character. I found out there is a summer camp for kids which I would have loved to go if I were still a kid. So much history to learn from here. One of the employees was amazing and explained everything...such a great story teller, you can tell he is passionate about his work there. If you’re in Cape Breton don’t miss out on the fort.

This place is massive. Prepare to spend 6 hours and you will still miss stuff. My spouse has mobility problems so we use a riding scooter. Most buildings are not handicap friendly. But there is still lots to see. The two washrooms we went to involved steps. Not known if there are ramped washrooms anywhere.

I brought our two little boys to Louisbourg- twice! On two separate trips to Nova Scotia. As my husband was left back in the city slaving away I was a single parent managing everything with two boys aged 6 and 8 the first year and 8 and 10 on our second trip. It was the perfect place for them and me. No cars for me to fret over and not easy for them to get lost- so they had far more freedom than usual. And plenty of other adults in costume explaining and teaching them so many things. Ideal absorbing experience that kids never forget. They remember Louisbourg fondly to this day- as do I. Especially thrilling for little boys were the brilliantly uniformed soldiers firing their guns on command! Stunningly beautiful location.

Fortress of Louisbourg National Historic Site is one of the most outstanding places I have ever visited. Walking through the site takes at least three, if not four hours. The reconstructed buildings look authentic and are in great shape. The employees work with lots of dedication. The rough landscapes only add to the atmosphere. A great place to visit while planning a trip towards beautiful cape breton. I went with my family during 2nd week of October and we signed up for Time Travels activity in Fortress of Louisbourg that gave us a very good insight of how things were in 18th century in this fortress. We saw demonstration of musket fire; and had a hot chocolate which was served to us in a kitchen and in a manner similar to that of 18th century. My children enjoyed seeing ducks there. A must visit place if you are planning a visit to Cape Breton.

The fortress of louisbourg is not the most convenient attraction on cape Brenton Island, but boy is it worth the effort! This historic landmark is not a hold over from olden times, but rather a recreation of the past in the present. When driving up to the fortress, you might be mistaken to think that the impressive buildings in front of you are relics of the past. However, this location was completely recreated over 2 decades starting in the 1960s. It's recreation supported the livelihoods of countless workers who had lost their jobs. In addition to artefacts strewn throughout the recreated buildings, the attraction uses antiques or accurate recreations along with fully costumed staff fully knowledgeable about the history about ancient Louisbourg. The staff and the atmosphere place you in an historical Era lost to time, but thanks to the efforts take this place a reality, available to all now who are willing to go out of their way to see this wonderful cite.

One of the highlights of my N.S. trip. Characters in full costume and with historical knowledge to boot. Talked to one woman whose family dates back to the time of Lousibourg and who also hid out with the Mi'kmaq to avoid exile. There is an audio tour you can download from Parks Canada - in the app store search for Parks Canada app and there are two tours you can listen to as you walk - one taking you around the rebuilt city and the other taking you out to the original ruins on a beautiful walk right along the ocean. Recommend downloading the audio tour as it adds another layer to the experience.

Really enjoyed this place. I enjoy going back in time and see how people lived. The architecture of the whole village. Lots of history. This village was burned down by the king of England's men at his orders way back then. The Canadian government has done a beautiful job rebuilding it as original as possible. You would never know it wasn't the original. However they have only rebuild 10%. They have plenty more to complete.

Amazing historical site. As a history buff, I spent the entire day exploring the fortress and taking in the interpretive activities. Kids loved the musket and cannon demonstration. When it goes off you can feel the concussive force of the cannon firing from across the courtyard. Guided tours were awesome for the kids, highlighting three roles in the fortress, soldier, farmer and fisherman. Kids had a blast "cleaning" the cod.

Incredible experience. So much money has been put into restoring this fort and it shows. Really big town of of buidlings all from the 1700s. All the people who work for parks Canada in the town were wearing period specific outfit and would not admit that they were from anywhere but the 1700s. Dancing, bakeries, cannon shooting, musket shooting, marching, blacksmithing, farming with animals like sheep goats chickens and turkeys and vegetavles patches. Really kind bilingual staff inhabit all the different building and tell you about their life in 1700. Highly recommended! For only $17.50 for an adult, incredible value.

Surreal fortress located on the edge of Halifax. There is so much history and so many stories here i definitely reccomend the Fortress for anyone in the area it is a must see. You get to walk through history as the fortress is setup with workers portraying characters from when the location was in use. They are all equipped with so much information that they are willing to give you as soon as you ask.

We visited at the end of the season a few weeks ago. We lucked up and a cruise ship was docked so they opened many of the buildings. The weather when we arrived was brutal (sleet and high winds) but good luck shined down upon us again and it improved and temperatures rose. We spent a couple of hours here. Its very informative and they had park rangers giving tours but we did our own thing. you can pet goats and sheep and view chickens/turkeys out in the town area in the front of the property near the water too.

Well this place just needs a detour if you are in this side of Cape Breton. Firstly I feel that they could have had better signs indicating where you needed to park your car. It wasn’t clear that if you headed to P1 or P2, you would end up near the visitor centre. The other Parking spots are fine if you want to do some hiking. There, they would put you on a shuttle bus to take you to the main site. It runs every 15 mins. There were plenty of modern facilities around and 3 places to eat etc. The cafe is basic but adequate. The pulled pork roll, hit the spot. The place was a dream to walk around with a good map to guide you and plenty of Period Characters and animals to interact with. They were only too willing to converse and keep in character for that point in history. What they didn’t tell you was that they have a ceremony for firing the cannon. This takes place twice a day. I think it’s roughly at 15:00 and 17:00. There are also period events that take place which are worth trying to see. Such as dancing, parading and the trial/sentencing of a criminal. The forge and bakery should also be on your list. I had a particularly interesting conversation with a lady who was tending one of the gardens. She had been a tour guide for over 20 years and knew her stuff about the Fortress and the subsequent battle that ended the French foothold in this part of Canada. Most impressive. I would say to take your time and do it justice, you need to give it at least 3 hours. Half a day would be ideal. If it wasn’t for a couple of things mentioned above, I would have had no problem giving it 5/5.

Amazing service, amazing employees too numerous to name. Highlights were the employees in period character as well as impressive public works project that transitioned miners from Cape Breton into trained craftsmen in the 1960s and early 1970s. This rates as high if not higher than the Hoover Dam in scale. I was touched spiritually as I was as a child at the soldier's chapel. The soldier's chapel is magical. I prayed for half an hour in complete peace. I did not wish to leave.

Loved it! The village is faithfully restored to the 1740, however with well hidden water and power. Very well trained re-enactors in period dress provide life and colour to the site. When we left the park I knew a lot more about France's commitment to early Canada and the hardships that inhabitants endured.

I brought my father, my wife and my kids this summer. Everyone enjoyed it. You park at the interpretation center then take a 10 minutes bus ride to the forteresse. Once you get out of the bus, you are plunged in the 1760s-1770s. They also have an exhibit on how the forteresse was brought back to life after mines in Sydney area had closed. I would definitely go back if given the opportunity

Very interesting if you're a history buff but lots of fun for the whole family even if not. Talking to the 'actors' as a whole new depth to the experience. Lots of little hidden secrets and details to explore. Just walking up the coast just outside the fort unveils other sites not yet developed.

Take the guided tour, our tour guide was amazing. She taught us the history of the area, the reasons the fortress was build and the conflict between the French and the English. It was definitely very fun to learn about the era. Check it out if you are passing by. Oh and by the way, the guard at the front gate was pretty cool. You will have to check it out.

I've visited Louisbourg (Fort) twice. Once in 1976 when reconstruction was basically getting underway and then again in 1982. The transformation was remarkable. What were once ruins were now fully restored buildings. I'm sure there's been even more remarkable changes. The palace was just unbelievable. In 1976 visitors could drive directly to the fort. In 1982 the government had built a welcome centre to bus visitors to the fort. Just remarkable transformation.

Spent a little over five hours here and had a great time. Saw the guards demonstrating their muskets and the cannon. Talked to the staff who were very informative. I asked a lot of detailed questions and received detailed answers. The bakers, blacksmiths, the servants doing knitting or lace, and the servers where we ate were friendly and engaging. We enjoyed our meal in the tavern. All in all a great time.

Excellent, very reasonable admission. We took the tour with the stationed army chap , and learned of a day in the life and visited a dignitary home. Various inhabitants will greet you and talk about their home and life. Stop by the inn for a meal as served then. You can buy bread baked daily at the old bakery. For the brave fire a musket!

Wonderful place to see. Visited at early September, to avoid the crowded summer days. Visit the fortress is a time travel experience. The staff is amazing and friendly. You can also fire a canon or the musket, which I highly recommend to make your experience even better. I spend a whole day there. I could se several events, hear to many guides explaining about the buildings, ate at the low class restaurant (vegetarian meals also available) just like as I was at the place centuries ago. Don't miss the chance to buy the fresh made bread at the old style bakery, it is super delicious!

Attended my brother's wedding here. Was a great experience, the coordinator, Kyle Allen, was extremely accomodating and helpful. Everything went off very smoothly, and Kyle even lined up an impromptu ghost tour of the fortress for those that stuck around till dark. Definitely consider here to visit or if you have a special event.

How can you not love this place? Very well organised, the staff is well trained, stay within their role as they talk to you. They are all well informed historically. Word of advice: This is a full day event... Arrive early. There are 3 restaurants in there to experience authentic cuisine. Also get the activity schedule in advance (call or perhaps look it up on the internet). This will help you time & organise your visit. If you have reduced mobility, you can park super close to the fortress and use their golf cart tour. Walkways are in cobblestones... Enjoy!!!

Amazing site and lots of interesting history about life in early Canada. Motor tour was informative but did not cover much ground, only good for those with mobility issues. Plan several hours! Think guide referenced wrong book for Marie Margurite Rose (19 Years a Slave, not Book of Negroes).

The Fortress of Louisbourg National Historic Site of Canada is a breathtaking and accurate portal to life in 18th century Nova Scotia. With its stunning recreations of landmark buildings, and its constant reenactments of daily life, it feels as if you are being welcomed back to an age long passed. As a local, I have been many times and never had an issues at all. The facilities are flawless and sanitized thoroughly. Food is well provided and suits the time period, (dont bring outside food the ruin the experience for others). I recommend this site to anyone and everyone for an insight into our past.

A great lesson in history for both kids and adults. Lots to a and do. You could spend an entire day there and still not experience everything. Admission does not include any extra activities inside the fortress, so be prepared to pay if you want to fire a musket or cannon, be imprisoned or even take the guided tour. All "residents" of the fortress are in costumes appropriate to the time period and remain in character when spoken to. They go about their routines as you walk around the grounds. A day pass is less than $20 CAD - highly recommend if you are vacationing in Cape Breton.

Discovering Destinations

So it's a fort with walls and cannons, etc. and has historical interest and authenticity (I'm not a fort connoisseur) but I actually really liked that there were 'actors' everywhere representing people who would have lived there in the 1700's etc. They told stories of how they would have lived, their 'station', and living conditions, and even fired a musket for us. There were pre-recorded info stations in some of the buildings but the actors really made it memorable. It poured and we got soaked so we didn't stay as long as we could have, but definitely an interesting trip! Good for kids I would think too.

This is probably the best museum in Nova Scotia. The whole town is very well restored, citizens are very helpful and love to tell their stories. Even with the Covid measures in place it was great to visit again. Hopefully next year they bring back the option to overnight in a period tent. We did that 4 years ago and it was awesome.

Amazing site! Be ready to spend a good half day here. You park and then take a shuttle to the site. Shuttles leave every 15 mins in the summer. The guided tour was excellent. The restaurant is very busy at lunch as it coincides with the end of the cannon demo.

Really fun day. A must do. Make sure you give yourself a lot of time to really take it all in. There are plenty of activities to do and watch. The actors are amazing. I did the cannon firing activity and the rum tasting activity. I highly recommend both of them. I learned a lot and the site is very beautiful and felt like the real deal.

Really cool place. Great history; A story of bringing the community up again with jobs. A bit dissapointing as nothing is original. The surrounding area is cool to explore. Had blueberries along the water... Then found out they ripped down people's houses and a church for the park. Definite mixed feelings. If you want a cool historical experience and don't care about the underlying stuff then I would recommend!

I was unaware of this fortress until I decided to travel to Nova Scotia. The largest historical reconstruction in North America deserves a day of your time. Our guide was knowledgeable and personable and had a great sense of humor.

I can't believe we hadn't heard of this place before. We went beginning of October, a week before they were closing up for the season, so they have a little less activities going on during the shoulder season. But we were incredibly impressed and strongly encourage the detour. We loved our visit, all the 'guides' dressed in costume and interpreting various roles, always happy to answer questions and tell stories. The site is magnificent, and reflects well all the effort that was put in by the various historians, architects, builders, etc. to recreate a step back in time.

Left the Cape Breton highlands early this am to fit the fortress of Louisbourg in before our drive home... Sadly after driving almost 2 hours it was closed. Both Facebook and Google says open ...it would be helpful if they updated their hours of operation. Hope to see it when it's open.

So glad i got a chance to visit it. What a unique part of our history. Spoke with some Americans who were impressed with the amount of restoration that had been done here. If you were wondering if its worth seeing, it is. Parks Canada has done a admirable job of staffing it with period correct people and even food is period correct. Check it out.

Well worth the drive out here, Fort Louisbourg features actors in period costumes and an immersive experience, allowing you to wander the buildings and discover the village on your own. Re-enactments were engaging -- a good trick, when they have to compete with the stunning scenery of this park. Recommended.

Truly incredible. Everyone should go at least once in their life! Book at least 3 hours to make sure you see everything. I could have happily stayed from opening to closing to see all the buildings and catch all the great daily events. It's clear a lot of work and love has gone into this place. This was the most amazing historic visit I have ever been to. I fired the Cannon which was incredible. From the historic soldiers to the interactive exhibits it was fascinating. I loved that I could go into all the different buildings and rooms which are locked off at other locations like the citadel in Halifax. We spent 5 hours there and had an amazing day! I would recommend this to everyone. Also, book the extra things like firing cannons and muskets, it really makes the experience special.

*** Must Visit Attraction *** We visited Maritime Provinces in 2015 and didn’t visit here. In 2018 we visited again, and LOVED visiting here. I was wondering in my head why we didn’t come here before. Too good. Some reviews says it takes 3-4 hours to see the whole thing. Let me give you two options: 1. If you Love museums / history and have time: First of all take the 10:30am tour (available both in English and French). It takes an hour and costs $4 per person. After that you would know what to look at and then you go nuts. See each exhibit and it can take as much time as you would like to spend. 2. If you have little time / you like Museums but don’t die for them: Take the 10:30am tour, and that should be it. There are two guided tours, first one at 10:30am and the second one at around 2pm, I think. For you to join the 10:30am tour, you should buy the tickets at 9:45am latest and take the bus (complimentary) to take you to Fortress site. Then its a 15 minutes walk to the Tour start point. Parking is free on site. The restaurant and bakery only serve you food of 1745 AD colonial time, which if you don’t like (if you have taste buds like mine), then you only have an option of a cafe that serves chips and pop. It means, if you plan a 4-5 hours “I Love Museums” kinda trip, pack your lunch. Highly recommended tourist spot, Specialised for kids.

Everything is so done so well to really make you feel like you've stepped back in time. The employees stayed in character and seemed to thoroughly enjoy being there. It was awesome!

I visited the fortress during the second week of October, two days before it closed for the season. Most of the activities were unavailable, but even so, I spent a good 6 hours here and enjoyed every minute. The area was cold and windy, and most of us were underdressed. If you're visiting in the fall, pack a hat, gloves, extra layers, a windbreaker and snacks. I started off with a guided tour, which lasted around an hour. Our guide told us about the history of the fortress and gave us some background about the owners and uses of each home and building. I highly recommend the tour, otherwise you won't understand the significance of the site. For extra authenticity, take the tour in French — although it might take awhile to get used to the regional dialect. I also bought the Time Travel package. We tasted a cup of rich, thick hot chocolate in the engineer's home and then met a soldier who showed us how he fired a musket. Only a handful of homes still had actors dressed in period clothing. The exhibits that were open throughout the town and in the Kings' Bastion were interesting to read, watch and listen to. A small café was open, but there wasn't much to choose from other than soup. The gift shop had some great discounts since the season was over. I recommend putting aside a full day to visit the fortress, otherwise you won't be able to see what every room has to offer or take part in activities. I don't particularly enjoy history, but the fortress was one of the highlights of my trip to Cape Breton.

You may have figured by now that I love history. This is amazing. The original town was destroyed over the years by storms, but has been partially rebuilt from archaeological records and historical documents. An incredible job, nearly as good as Sturbridge Village. The narrative is also something that had flown under my radar. I knew about the fall of Quebec in 1859 and Montreal in 1860, but the fall of Fortress Luoisbourg was the gateway to the British taking of French Canada. Worth the time and the price of admission.

Really great place to visit, no matter how hot or warm the weather is else where in Cape Breton s normally always chilly or foggy. Which often adds to the cool effects of time traveling. The setting is little diminished due to covid, but still an excellent adventure in history. Definitely a good choice for family trips or for anyone that loves history. The restaurants and taverns are cute and seeing everyone in period costumes makes it a extra special. Make sure you stop by the bakers for bread and the governor's quarters for the beautiful examples of 18th century furniture.

A definate must see if you like stepping back to the late 1700's or early 1800's. Make sure you visit the church in the huge army barracks and stay for the cannon blast- WOW! Plan to spend at least 4 hrs maybe more and wear comfy walking shoes, you won't be disappointed!

Fantastic! So much to see and do! Would reccomend spending at least half a day here. We spent 4 hours but could have spent 6. Many buildings to enter, lots of history to read about. We did the one hour tour which was informative and worthwhile to start with. There is a dress-up area and room for kids to play in at the King's Bastion area. We danced with actors in the street. There are 3 places to eat at with various prices and options (cheaper, moderate, and pricey). Tasty food! For us, it would be worthwhile to come back here again and spend a whole day. The history is so rich!

Always a sucker for some good history. The fort was free to visit during Canada's 150th birthday. There are a couple food options while in the fort. Keep in mind prices are high and portions are small. Well worth the visit as the fort is quite large.

This is a re-creation based on records and archaeological findings of what it might have looked like in the 1700s. As such we don't know what it looked like but it is a wonderful historic record of Canadian history. The interpreters on-site over the summer, many have worked there for years and very extremely familiar with the history of the area it is great talking to them and it definitely gives you a feeling of what the area and history were like.

This national historic site is well worth the slight detour off the Cabot Trail to visit. We were here in September, near the end of the season, and although the parking lots were quite busy the site is so large that it was never crowded. Staff in period costumes provide demonstration and interpretation and are always happy to talk with guests. We only had a few hours here, but I would suggest a full day, and there's enough to keep you busy for two.

Great place with amazing immersion, the place is huge, lots of people to inform you, we had a blast. Take note that the place is not wheelchair friendly, they lend adapted walkers but if the person cannot walk they are useless, i strongly recommend taking the guided tours if you are with someone who needs a wheelchair. I did not removed any stars as everyone there helped us as much as they could in the circumstances, really appreciated!!!

If you love history, then you will have to visit this place. The staff (skeleton crew at this time of year) were knowledgeable and very friendly. Lots of historic facts and things to see. The food was good and things were done (only a spoon) to make it feel authentic. It is in a great location being on the ocean and has a wonderful view.

If you are in the area visit this national historic site and learn about the importance of this fort in Canada's history. Understand that the fort, walls and all the buildings are reconstructed but based on extreamly accurate historical records and the actual footings excavated for the effort. The staff dressed in period costumes are very well trained and can converse in both French and English and explain all aspects of their roles and the structure where they are housed. It is definitely worth spending a day in order to learn and appreciate the significance of the fort.

Nicely restored and the re-enactment staff are so friendly and knowledgeable. Easy to spend a whole day wandering through. Confusing signage as you drive in. Look for a parking sign well before the actual fortress, turn there and find the Visitor Center. You'll take a bus from there.

The fortress is impressive even from a distance! Your approach to the fortress allows you to see it in all its majesty from about 1 km away. Once there you will walk the streets and meet interpretive guides dressed as and personifying people of that Era. Take the guided tour, either walking or the motorized tour (e friendly). You will learn so much more than just walking through and reading the plaques. Allow your self atleast a full day to explore. 1 afternoon is not enough. Food is available for purchase and there is even a 18th century tavern to imbibe some some local spirits. It was on my bucket list for a long time! I'm headed back today, in the rain, to see everything I missed yesterday.

I really enjoyed my time here. We visited here last summer and we weren't planning on visiting this fortress. I'm glad that we ended up coming and didn't miss this opportunity. It was so interesting to go around the fortress and learn about the history and to see how the soldiers lived there. I highly recommend that you visit this fortress if you haven't already. You will really enjoy it if you love history!

A good place for both adults and children. The period dress worn by staff help to create an atmosphere. We found them knowledgeable and keen to tell you what a day in the life of a soldier would have been like. There is a small cafe on site but there is plenty of space to take a picnic. There is a bus shuttle service to take you from the entrance building to the fortress.

It more than lives up to its name, being historic AND a Fortress. The signage to get there needs help, i.e. don't drive all the way to the Fort, turn in at the Entrance sign well before it to find the secret Visitor's Centre, where you pay and get the shuttle bus to the Fort. There's lots to see, such as canon and musket demonstrations, and the meal at the tavern was some of the best food my wife and I had eating out.

I've always wanted to visit this national historic site and had the opportunity to go with my husband and small children, ages 6 and 3. While I knew I would enjoy it, I was pleasantly surprised by the wealth of children's activities and xplorer guide for kids. It was a great place to spend the day and we look forward to going again. The only drawback is that it isn't pet friendly so plan to make alternate arrangements if you are traveling with a pet.

We came during the shoulder season and as a result we didn't see a single park guide or actor in the park which was disappointing but it was still a pretty large facility with a fair bit of stuff to look at.

Really good place. Signage has to be better to indicate where people turn in the first instance to park their car ... need better access once you get off the bus for people in wheelchairs .. the gravel path you have to walk is hard to move a wheelchair over. More indication of where you can get cold drinks and food would be great. Places are there but signage needs to be better.

You have to enjoy history to really love this location. I do and was not disappointed. The use of a herd of sheep to keep the grass mowed was fun to watch; they walk about freely. Have to go back for sure!

The Fortress of louisbourg is an amazing experience. You not only get to look around and explore freely, but you get to interact with some of the experiences they offer. The restaurant offers authentically recreated meals from back in the day which I believe they also create the same way back in the day. Camp overnight in a fortress, 18th century style! A ton of activities during the day. Everyone there was so friendly and informative. The period reenactors really encouraged questions and interaction. Way bigger and more to do than you think. Don't underestimate the amount of time you'll spend at the fortress.

This historical place reminded me a little off Williamsburg but on a much smaller scale. It shows how the soldiers who lived and worked here once defended themselves and their country. We got to see a cannon fired and a musket fire. The guides dressed in period soldier costumes knew their history well.

Really nice place of history, the staff is really nice, even if you dont take the tourist parcour, talking to them teach you a lot ! My advice, finish your visit at the tavern, good beer (for my taste of course) and the bartender will also explain to you some stuff.

This place is fabulous. Went in 2012. I can just say ; I have to go again. It is incredible to see such monuments in this country. The fortress, the houses , the church,everything done without power tools and still strong. The Fortress of Louisbourg is a must stop. One of my favourite places in the maratimes! Amazing dully recreated french fort with lots of activities and full period actors. A full day of fun for one person or a family would highly recommend preparing to be there for the day has several restaurants to get food because once you are in the fort it's not easy to jump back to your car for anything.

This place is super cool.. we didn't take in any of the "extras". We just walked around on our own. Countless buildings to enter and period folks dressed to explain anything. We spent about 3.5 hrs there. One could double that. Park in the several options of parking areas. Walk a couple hundred meters to the building to get tickets and a bus running every 15 minutes will bring you to the Fortress. Prepare for lots of walking and stairs. You'll be spending a significant time outside so prepare for that. Cloudy, cool day would be best. 1/2 hr or so from Sydney. I need to build a few of those chairs..

Fantastic place to visit, and we were glad that we made the detour to Louisbourg. If you are at all interested in history, then this place is a must. The buildings are beautifully restored, and the staff in period dress brought it to life. Bring layers, as it can be cold even on summer days.

Very interesting, good recreation of a historical site. The buildings are re-constructed but really well done. We didn’t eat but it smelled good. Bring warm clothes, the weather said sunny and 22 but when we got there it was 15 with quite the wind coming off the water, misty and damp. We spent close to 3 hours near the end of the day and got to see the closing fire of a cannon, really cool.

Nothing short of time travelling back to the seventeen hundreds. A walk through the fortress is met with so many actors in full garb and spirit it seems a reality. The peasants lunch in full period fare was a extra touch that the kids loved.

The only reason I couldn't give this 5 stars is it is difficult to enjoy if handicapped. Although handicap parking and accessible shuttle buses to the fortress are available, once dropped at the site, visitors face a long walk over rough gravel to reach the buildings, most of which have steps up the entries with no hand rails. The place itself is a marvel! The "residents" are all in authentic period clothing and are happy to share their considerable knowledge about life in the fortress during the 1700's.

The overnight experience was amazing value. Had a large house and full run of the fortress after hours for less than the price of a typical hotel room. During business hours, there was an abundance of knowledgeable staff and information.

Amazing site to visit. Staff is very knowledgeable and fun to talk to. Make sure to walk over to them and ask them about who their characters are. Take the time to hike the trail of the ruins and follow it around the shore back to the monuments. We spent 6 hours and could easily have spent a couple more. There are a bunch of free activities and others that are extra. You park your vehicule at the visitor center and hop on a shuttle to the Fortress.

Don't miss the firing of the cannons in the King's Bastion. Very exciting (and loud like large fireworks)! Overall, it was an awesome 18th settlement reenactment. Visited after labour day when crowds were much smaller. Cool to be able to interact with history. The forge was my favourite site. Definitely worth visiting this national historic site.

First visit in 45 years, and they have expanded the restoration quite a bit. The selection of structures to display presents a wide variety of architecture and primitive tools and manufacturing processes. There are plenty of costumed villagers and soldiers who are very approachable and helpful, while remaining in character. The Kings Bastion contains photographic documentation of the area prior to restoration that magnifies your appreciation for what they've done. They've recently added a working period tavern where adult beverages are available, as well. My GPS tried to take me in the back road as it's evidently shorter, and road signs supported the turn off, but the road is ultimately closed, so stick to the pavement! LOL

Great experience! We spent about 4 hours here and loved every minute. This address brought us to a closed gate. We called the fortress and they told us we needed to go to the Visitor Centre in Louisbourg. We google mapped that and the directions took us right to where we needed to be.

Terrible customer service on behalf of Parks Canada. They should really change their hours of operations from 9-5 to 9-4:30 pm. We arrive at 4:30 from a long drive and missed the last bus by 5 mins. No flexibility on their part - really unfriendly to tourists. I tried calling them before hand but their phone goes nowhere. A real fail

So much fun to visit this historical site. A unique opportunity to go back in time and learn about some of the early French settlers and imagine their experiences. A must see for all canadians who live their home and native land. More information about the indigenous settlers and the slaves and serf experiences would round it out with some diverse perspectives which are needed in Canada.

I loved this historic icon for many reasons. The mainstream narrative was not one of them. They have a perspective that's focused on this building being constructed as a fortress, and that is clearly not the case. I won't go into details too far because I just don't have the ambitions to alter entire knowledge foundations in this post. But, it was clearly constructed for harvesting hydrolic energy from tidal water flow. The 'forts' curious arrangement of cannons facing each other on the back side of the property would be a dead give-away if people were viewing it with an open mind. Beautiful to witness the ingenuity of our ancestors from a realistic perspective.

Great experience. I didn't think it would be as fun and engaging as it was. Try to time it so you get to witness the cannon fire! Lots of little nooks and small rooms to explore. The staff are almost all in costume and add greatly to your experience there.

This is an absolute must stop for people of all ages. We did the entire east coast and for my daughter this is one place She still talks about today. She would love to go back again. Fully bilingual. The entire staff are exceptional. Dressed in period clothing and played their roles to a tee. Home made bread the old fashioned way. Military dressed. I honestly can't say enough. Lovely experience. You should plan around 4 hours to really experience the whole site. Also, keep in mind that the food you'll find at the Forteresse is the same food you would find 200 years ago. Picky eaters beware ;)

Very interesting to bisit with people and soldiers in period custumes. Very friendly and informative staff. Visually appealing from it's location and surroundings to it's faithful reconstruction of all the components of the fortress, homes, shops, governor's palace and military installations. Also has some period eatery and regular restaurants. Kids seemd to be enjoying themselves A few reenactments were also enjoyable to watch. No downside to this place for young and old.

Certainly a commitment and a drive to get up here but once you arrive it's totally worth the journey. The park has done an amazing job to provide a dynamic experience of what life looked like 300 years ago. Bring a jacket, the temperature between the parking lot and the fortress dropped at least 5 degrees near the water.
