I was working long hours as a chef and sustained a severe back injury, herniating two lumbar discs. In the hospital, was put in traction and given muscle relaxants, then scheduled for spinal fusion surgery.
I asked about the details of the procedure. A piece of bone from my illiac crest would be inserted between the injured vertebral bodies, fusing my spine. I chose to find another way.
Over the next few weeks, my left leg began to weaken. More X-rays showed the nerve root was being impinged by calcification around the facet window. I was in extreme pain and very much terrified.
An EMG study confirmed the nerve was deteriorating. Still, I had enough faith look for another way.
I was considered totally disabled. My doctors warned me that I would lose my ability to walk if I didn't have the fusion procedure. I kept searching and found a chiropractor who gave me some relief.
A temporary fix, for every two weeks my back would go out and I'd be right back in the office. I began practicing Pilates and have continued to this day.
My progress was slow, and over the years I regained my health and physical stamina. Still there were setbacks which I took on as they appeared.
I became an accomplished open water swimmer and SCUBA diver. I studied anatomy and addressed the weakness in my body.
I continued to use chiropractic to keep me adjusted, when I could not get results otherwise.
In the past several years, I resolved most of my issues. One area I could not get past was my severe recurring headaches.
My chiropractor would adjust me by manipulating my head and with a crackling sound and all would be well, for a few weeks.
Then the pain would come, and back for another session. I had to find a better way.
One of my Pilates students mentioned Doctor Chris, I became interested in his NUCCA method. I did the treatment with him and felt immediately better.
The dull constant pain was gone. Over the next two weeks, I continued to improve. My sleep was much better, as was my mental focus and ease of movement. My neck and head pain has not reappeared.
I feel this was the last piece of the puzzle in my return to full functioning. It has been a decades long journey. I am so glad I found Dr. Chris at Portsmouth Family Chiropractic.
