Everything our table ordered was very, very good. I had the lasagna... I've eaten a lot of lasagna in my life, but this was the best, by far. Our appetizer, the mussels, had multiple layers of flavour that I've never experienced in mussels before. Pricey, yes. Could I go every week? No. But completely worth the money. Very pleased.

Definitely one of my absolute favourite restaurants in St. John. I've been there several times, had excellent food, service everytime. Quality of food is quite good. Atmosphere is excellent, quiet enough for good conversation but the place is usually busy that you feel part of a community. Decor is attractive.

Really liked this little bit of Italy in the Market Square area of Saint John. The staff were very friendly. Nice interior. Good menu choices. Fantastic experience! Staff was amazing and helpful. Put together but friendly atmosphere. Food is top notch. Great for every occasion. Edit: I've seen some people complain about "being removed" after a period of time and I just want to let others know WE GET AN EMAIL ABOUT THIS BEFORE EVEN GOING. Due to Covid they set times for party goers and they tell you before your reservation. I do not know why these people are hiding that fact while posting a bad review. You are given MORE than enough time to enjoy your dinners and deserts, then you leave at your exit time. Very clearly stated in the emails you get.

The hype of Italian by Night had us very excited to go. Before we arrived, (our reservation for 5:30) we were notified that our table is booked immediately after our reservation, at 7:30. When we got there at 5:30 we waited a while for our server to come and introduce herself. When she arrived at our table she made note that we have an hour and a half of our table left. We ordered the scampi for an appetizer to share, but unless you get an appetizer that is for 2 people, the portion is not large enough to really share. We waited about 20 minutes for our entrees to come after we finished the scampi. I had the penne carbonara and my wife had the ravioli. My pasta was okay, but nothing special, especially not for the price of it. My wife's ravioli was cold and was supposed to have a salmon mousse inside, but it just tasted like canned salmon. It was when we're almost finished eating that our server came by with the cracked pepper and parmesan to offer us which was frustrating as we both wanted that at the beginning of our meal, not when we had a few bites left! Lastly we ordered a tiramisu to share. This was tasty but again, the portion was too small to share. We waited longer for the bill, at which point the server said we still have time to have another cocktail, which we declined. Being reminded of the time we felt rushed. The dining room was also loud, that being said it was a Saturday evening. All in all we both felt it did not live up to the hype.

Pasta itself is great quality but some of the other ingredients are lacking in the dishes that my group tried. Apps are very expensive for what you get, as well are the mains. 2 out of 3 people that came to our table were quite snooty when we asked questions about the menu. Towel service was a nice touch. Tiny tables cramped in a small area. Waitress asked us to pay our bills while my friend was still eating because she needed to clear our table for the next reservation which we found out was over a half hour away. Probably won't return.

It's clear to me a lot of passion and care has gone into the creation of this restaurant. Starting with the food, it was absolutely delicious and freshly made. I would say the portion sizes are quite generous. And finally presentation was not overlooked, the dishes were plated simply and looked great. The service was exceptional, our server was friendly and attended our table regularly. We were a family of six, our food arrived in a timely manner, in good order and all the dishes were correct. Finally, the atmosphere was that of an upscale restaurant. Set in a historic brick building, while the decor of the restaurant is classy and modern looking. Thanks for the Experience.

Had there chop chop which consisted of a Cesar salad as first course followed by a chicken Parm Hero and truffle oil fries and finished with a desert. Felt the salad lacked flavour and you'd expect a homemade dressing but tasted like store brought. Croutons looked like small crumbs. The bread for the hero was nice texture along with the chicken it was well breaded and cooked nicely. Just the right amount of cheese . If you're gonna do fries and pride on homemade I'd suggest not using bagged shoestring fries but made homemade fries as it would have gone along way. The desert was the star imo. Not impressed with the 35 price tag. Felt lacking for this price .

The food was alright. The lasagna came out cold in the middle, which I was told "happens sometimes." Carpaccio was great. The wine selection was okay. The atmosphere seemed to be trying to be more upscale than it really is and a little gimmicky (warm cloth at the start of the meal to wipe your hands). Overall, not a very memorable experience... But maybe that's just Italian restaurants in general.

My husband treated me to dinner tonight for our 13th wedding anniversary. It was the first time we have been to your restaurant. We were blown away by the ambiance, service and food. We received the best service by far of any restaurant I have experienced. Our server was Daniel and he went above and beyond to make us feel welcome. I ordered the salmon and risotto and my husband ordered the lasagna. The food was out of this world delishous! We were so impressed that I ordered the cheesecake to go. I can't get enough of this restaurant. We go to it for every celebration. They make their own bread as well as their sauces and even desserts. I love going after work to sit at the bar and enjoy a glass of Prosecco with an appetizer. Be sure to try their pizza and save room for dessert.

Let's get started. Atmosphere: to be short, it was dark. Like pretty lights but a little too dark for my liking. The wait staff was very friendly and always had our water filled and dishes taken up. Speaking of dishes, they took the first set of cutlery we had for apps and replaced it with the same + a sharp knife. An annoyance and waste. Game hen: the hen was perfectly cooked and simple with just salt I believe. It was the highlight of the dish. The gnocchi tasted like glorified tater tots. The little bit of brussel sprouts I got were super salty. The squash was randomly spicy and lacking salt. Osso bucco: the lamb could have been more flavorful;cooked nicely but overwhelmingly plain. But the polenta was a nice surprise. Also what happened to it being a cross section of a shank not just a small shank? GF pizza: very disappointed that they just used the same frozen pizza crust as everyone else uses. The crust was hard on the edges and undercooked in the middle. Good flavors though. Creme brulee: we split this between 4 people but it was a nice not too sweet end to the meal. The request of small spoons made it better :) Overall could have done better in the little things with the semi high prices.

The first time visiting Saint John and I decided to try Italian By Night. The restaurant was extremely busy to the point that when I arrived 10min before my reservation time, their waiting area was full, so I was told to wait outside until the exact time of my reservation. The atmosphere was pretty loud, certainly much louder than I anticipated. The server was terrific and super friendly. I started with bruschetta and the carpaccio first as appetizers; the bruschetta was mediocre, I’ve had better, but the carpaccio was delicious. I would recommend it. I didn’t want their Scollop Carbonara, so I asked if they could make it a regular bacon Carbonara, and the server said that wasn’t a problem. Again, the pasta was nothing special, it was like regular pasta anywhere else, but it was still good. It was served very hot and fresh, which was great. As for the dessert menu, I ordered four because I wasn’t sure when I would be revisiting Saint John and wanted to try as many as possible. The dessert was probably the best part of the meal. The Pavlova was nothing special, but the apple and caramel were yummy! However, the Torta, which is the rich dark chocolate torte with raspberry coulis and whipped cream, and the Crème Brûlée were both the best by far and fantastic! My least favorite dessert was the Tiramisu. Overall, Italian By Night is nice and fancy for Saint John because there is nothing here, but if this restaurant was in Toronto or any other major city, it would be a regular restaurant with a few great dishes.

Delicious food, attentive staff, upscale environment, good selection of beverages, great place for a special night out. The staff is quite attentive, even when the place is bustling with customers. They tend to be very friendly and accommodating. The menu has a good variety of flavorful food as long as you don't mind a heavy hand with the salt. Unfortunately, the pizza was basically inedible because the exterior of the crust had salt added as well, but the rest of the food was great, even though it was also even more salty than most places. The flavour combinations of each dish is inventive and enjoyable. The appetizers are just as good as the entrees and can even be sufficient as your entree if you like. There are several tables right in front of the full windows with a nice street view. The full bar is nice with a good amount of seating too. There is a private room in the back that can accommodate up to twenty people for meetings, which is recommended for large groups since the dining area can get pretty loud.

Wow. Don't bother reading the rest of this one, it's just going to tell you to go. The food was amazing, we had gnocchi and lasagna, and both dishes were flat out great. The meatball appetizer is a great choice, and the sangria is perfectly mixed. Our waitress was so good, and all the staff we interacted with were friendly, smiling and just wonderful. 10/10, will be back again.

We arrived on a saturday night after a days travel, no reservation, and were seated quickly by friendly staff. It is an upscale restaurant, wish we had dressed more appropriatly! Though staff was friendly, the food took quite some time to come out (close to an hour!), was a really busy night. The food was well worth the wait! The most amazing lasagna, and beef sirloin!! I would highly recommend this place for a nice evening out with quality food!

4 star food, 5 star service. The food here while not perfect, was close and it all tasted incredible. My brother's meatballs and pasta was huge and we were able to take some to go. It was also amazing. Perfectly cooked pasta and the 2 large meatballs left nothing to be desired. My salmon risotto was delicious. The only thing was there was a bit more liquid in the risotto than I am accustomed to. However, it was taken care of by the large piece of salmon on top with the perfectly crispy skin, so maybe that's the point. I ultimately gave this location 5 stars though because our server was wonderful. Happy, funny, friendly. All we wanted was a nice but quick meal and we got it. Can't wait to try more of the dishes when I come back to town. Very nice atmosphere in the restaurant as well.

I didn't fuss over that since I was in no hurry but I know others might be put off. A good choice in Saint John NB. This was the first time I have eaten at Italian by Night. I loved the new location - beautifully renovated old brick building from the 1880s with classy modern woodwork and stainless steal complimenting the brick and massive pine posts and beams. The restaurant was busy so we sat at the bar. I have some experience with Italian food and thought the dishes were excellent and also the service first rate. If I could suggest an edit however it would be something more convenient for the serving staff who have to duck under a half door to get in and out of the bar area.

I would like to start off by saying the meal was excellent. However, shocked when the bill came. We listened to the specials. Never thought to ask the server the price and he did not volunteer the price. The most expensive item on the menu is what $34. So one would assume the word special would be reasonable. Most establishments are. So when the bill came and I was charged $48.dollars for the "special"..well, as i said, the meal was excellant, but not $48.00 excellant. In fact, for a tenderloin, over a 1/2 cup of mashed potato, 2 asparagus, and a slice of squash, 1 inch by 4 inch, it was high way robbery Plus, it took almost 2 hours to receive. Is that so people will have more drinks???.

Italian by Night has to be one of the best restaurants in Atlantic Canada. I've been following the chef's blog for years and was really looking forward to trying her food - Michelle didn't disappoint! The antipasto plate was great, full of meats, cheeses, and olives with a variety of breads and spreads (a good amount for the 4 of us). 3 of us got the specials, a couple with their house-made tagliatelle that was light and perfectly cooked. And those desserts...you should definitely try the tiramisu, but the crème brûlée was perfect too. This meal was worth every penny. Can't wait to go back!

Maître D’ was galante, explained dishes and specials to those not versed in Italian cuisine. Excellent specials. Had both starters and main special. Deserts were superb. Wine list was very good. To start off on a good note, the restaurant’s atmosphere was great and décor was very pleasing. The hot towel before the meal was a nice touch and our waitress was really nice and did a great job. But… (Here we go) our work party made reservations one month before hand and when we (8 people) showed up there was no record of it. Almost everything our group ordered was OVER priced for the size of the dish. Come on people, $20 for a small pizza. I have trouble calling it that because all I got was a flat piece of bread with little pieces of cheese and a few mushrooms on it. They called them truffles but they could have been Costco mushrooms for all I know. My co-worker’s pasta was ice cold and the tomato sauce was almost tasteless. She let me try it. She asked our nice waitress for a new plat and told her what was wrong with it. The waitress returned about 4 minutes later with the same plat! The pasta must have been put in the microwave for 20 seconds because the temp of the pasta must have risen by fractions. All 8 of us were not happy with the food and my not return.

The pork chop was OK, the sorbet wasn't very good, and a drunk patron spilled a glass of my wine on me, for which I was subsequently charged in full. Revision (30-10-2018): To clarify, two women from another table who were passing were responsible for spilling our wine, not the women with whom we were dining. The overall quality of my experience sadly didn't live up to the hype, for which I was quite disappointed. Nevertheless, I appreciate your response and think it's great that Chop Chop is a charitable event.

Last night was my third visit . The first two visits were average at best but unfortunately the third time was not the charm. Whether it was new staff or weak leadership, service was slow and inconsistent. Arguably the food that was available was of good quality but presentation lacked. Two of the menu appetizers were not even available which is inexcusable for a restaurant of this apparent reputation. I don't often complain about prices but after spending just over 160 C$ for two people it was not good value for the spend. Disappointed.

I've been here several time but tonight was a disappointment! The Puttanesca pizza was very salty for my mom (which is fine because everyone's taste buds are different) so the waitress nicely asked her to pick something else, my mom chose a Quatro Toscano pizza which came out with burned crusts (A.K.A everyone's favourite part of the pizza) . My mom had 1 piece but ended up sending it back to the kitchen since all she can smell is burned pizza. My mom did mention to the server that the pizza is very good but sadly was burned and the server did not bother to ask my mom if she wants something else. Later, I discovered sand in my mussels in my Risotto Di Mare which I can hear the sound and feel the hard sand in my mouth when chewing (my dad also felt it). The waitress told us she'll bring out the manager but came back by herself and said that the kitchen's been serving the plate all night with no complaints or problems, therefore I just left the dish and unhappy with the way she transmits the message from the kitchen. In conclusion, my mom waited two hours to 2 pieces of pizza. Our waitress mentioned how "she has worked there for 2 years and never had a complaint, let along 3 from 1 table" or when I asked to see the dessert menu she goes "are you sure because if you have 1 more complaint I'd just leave". I am not writing this to criticize my server, she was fairly nice and as I've mentioned above, we were very nice about it as I also said sorry each time and we tipped them. We were disappointed with the way the restaurant handled the situation or maybe it is the wordings. I hope they can be more careful about this since this used to be one of my favourite restaurants, it was very unprofessional of them.

You won't find better service or a better menu, everything our table has ordered was a flavourful indulgence. You can truly taste the care put into perfecting each mouth watering recipe. If you're a chocolate lover, don't even think about skipping dessert, the Torta is incredible! Pricing is more than fair for the quality of food and the atmosphere!

What a wonderful evening out! My sister and I stayed in Saint John an extra day so she could enjoy her first meal at Italian by Night. Our dinner was absolutely delicious and the presentation of every dish was impressive. We feasted on the chef’s imaginative (and scrumptious) version of caprese salad, followed by a perfectly prepared steak served with a green pepper sauce. Our desserts - a wedge of flourless chocolate torte with raspberry coulis and a trio of house made sorbets - were just what we needed to finish off what was truly a culinary adventure. A huge thank you to Daniel, our server. He was so helpful, friendly and professional. I can’t remember the last time I had such good service in a restaurant. Italian by Night has everything you hope for when you decide to eat out and make an evening of it - excellent food, terrific service and a cozy ambiance.

My wife and I visited here for our anniversary this past weekend. We had Calamari and scallops to start. Main course was lasagna and a seafood pasta. All of the food was excellent but the calamari really stood out as the best we have had at least on the East Coast. The service was also stellar so these guys get a rare 5 star from us. We will be back......soon.

While traveling through Saint John, we were pleasantly surprised to discover IBN. The food was delicious. The price reflected the quality. Our waiter, George, took the experience over the top. He was knowledgeable about the dishes and offered several suggestions based on our preferences. We arrived late in the evening but we were welcomed graciously and not rushed. In fact, we were encouraged to enjoy our meal. Thank you for a relaxing finish to our travels.

Easily the best dining experience I have had in years. The decor was eye popping. An expertly hand carved bar to behold,. The spaciously spaced tables were beautifully appointed from lovely cutlery tucked into perfectly folded nap ware to tasteful linen tablecloths and richly designed stemware and crockery. The chef’s table is work of art, certainly the Piece de resistance of the warm ambiance of the interior. The slightly titillating posters adorning the walls only add to the convivial, friendly atmosphere. And the food! Oh my! Started with deep fried calamari, arrabiata sauce, and basil oil cooked to perfection. Then Hand rolled beef, veal and pork meatballs, marinara, char-grilled focaccia. Still salivating. My main dish was the Chicken parm with pasta, Never had better. There are so many more wonderful looking dishes I will be using all my frequent flyer miles to get to Saint John. I have only positive things to say about the personable professional staff. They all seemed to love working there and it showed in there attentive and genuine caring treatment of each patron. The place was packed, close to 200 patrons yet due to clever use of space the noise level was very tolerable. The prices of both food and wine were very fair, great value for one’s money. I shall certainly be back many times. My congratulation to both the owner, Ms. Rowe and her outstanding staff and associates.

My companion was called by the restaurant and told that our table was booked immediately after our 5:30 reservation and we had to be out by 7:30. We arrived at 5:40 and received ONE drink. After initial refills no one came back with water. At 7:12 we still did not have our food. When the bus person was asked about drink refills she stated she would get the wait staff. 30 minutes later we had to ask again. Whether or not the food is good does not make up for the bad service. My companions did enjoy their meals however I found my pizza very soggy. No time for tea or dessert, people were waiting for our table. After all that I paid an expensive bill, which, when it came out was wrong and had to be corrected. The staff did apologize for that. The restaurant is very loud on a Saturday evening so don’t go here if you are looking for a quiet relaxed meal. We basically had to yell to hear each other. That part I expected though as I had been here before. No plans to return.

Italian by Night is a great restaurant in the Saint John area. I definitely prefer this to the never ending pubs available. It also helps that the food is very good. I was never disappointed with the quality or taste of the food. I have tried both the Pizza and the Chicken Parmigiana and they were both delicious. I would warn anyone going that it is a tad expensive but nothing out of the ordinary for a quality experience.
