Good food, reasonable prices!
Great southern BBQ
Absolutely the best place to get a pull pork sandwich!!!!
Amazing people working there full of positivity and really kind plus the food is of the charts great every time
Big fan of the all in kicked up sauce.
Been here many times for lunch. The food is so good service is always fast and friendly. Go eat here for realz
Best BBQ
Good
Awesome BBQ. Definitely try the mustard sauce.
Great service and fantastic BBQ.
kitchen closes before closing hours is ridiculous
Fast friendly fresh family fun. Fantastic!
The food was wonderful, arrived super fast, but it's the staff at the SOS that really make the place. Extremely friendly and you can tell the owner genuinely loves what he does. All four members of my party were more than satisfied with their meal. Best cornbread I have ever had.
Amazing wow so so so good! To die for hats off to this place 100% happy.
Great BBQ
Pulled pork sandwich and side caesar salad for $23. The meat was ice cold and caesar salad can literally fit in the palm of my hand. Are you serious? How does this restaurant have 4.3 stars and 9.2 on skipthedishes? Are you buying reviews? What a joke. DO NOT BUY FROM THIS PLACE. Thank you SkipTheDishes for refunding this order.
Great meals and the catering is good for large groups of meat eaters.
In most towns this would be an easy five stars, however Waterloo is blessed with some really good bbq joints. SOS is great, but is smaller and more expensive than Lancaster. Love the fries here but prefer the Lancaster brisket.
Great brisket! ????
Food is insanely good. Easily gives Lancaster a run for its money.
Great brisket, great ribs!
A gem in the neighbourhood. Pulled pork is great and I love their poutines, real cheese curds and decent gravy!
Poutine ... With meat on it ... Soft tender BBQ meat of your choice ... 7 different sauces to choose from ... ... ... ... ... What more needs to be said
Ok so I was looking for a backup bbq place for when Lancaster smokehouse was sold out or all booked up and I thought I found it with this place. I was wrong. The Mac and cheese was horrifying and so cold it was clumped together *gags* I also ordered brisket, smoked wings, and ribs as well as coleslaw and cornbread. The ribs were actually ok but lacked actual flavour from seasoning it was mostly flavoured with the sweet sauce. The smoked wings were ok too but were cold and I think came straight from a fridge to me :/ the brisket was so dry I’m convinced it wasn’t made that day and actually just leftovers from previous day it was flavourless and just plain gross. I have given up On finding a replacement for Lancaster smokehouse because it seems nothing compares. I’m really disappointed as I wanted to be happy and like this place but the food is in need of some SOS
Take out
I ordered via Uber Eat, so maybe your dine in experience is different. I ordered a brisket meal for about $20+tax and 1lb (handful) of wings for $17 + tax. First the brisket meal was just a sandwich with few hush puppies and a drink . The portion is tiny for the price. And most importantly the brisket was so dry and the meat tasted like boiled or steamed more than smoked low and slow. The other smoke house in town and even the fast food sub that sells brisket are in the order of magnitude better. The brisket was so trimmed of fat as well, maybe some like it this way idk. Sauce tasted good and the bun itself tasted fantastic. Hush puppies were too dense for my liking. Wings were average, not that juicy and no special flavor, not worth it for the price. Service and delivery were extremely fast and order was accurate.
So good......
Great pulled pork and Brisket.
My new favorite BBQ joint in town. Portions are generous and the meats and sides taste great. Would recommend!
Food quality and portions not what they used to be combined with rude staff
Took my dad here for lunch today. He had pig tails and coleslaw. I had pulled beef brisquit and onion rings. Food was very good and service was quick.my dad made a comment these are as good as your mother’s lol. Enough said. Try them we were not disappointed.
Great food! There was a misunderstanding with the first gentleman who was taking my pick up order on the phone. However the owner called me back to correct situation. She was very friendly and helpful. The food was amazing! The price is fare for what you atw getting. The restaurant looks clean and efficient. My kids loved the ribs, baked beans, corn bread and hush puppies. We loved EVRYTHING. Brunswick stew hits a spot only moms cooking does. Definetly recommend this hidden gem!
Just had Good Friday fish and chips here and it was delicious! From the fish to the fries and coleslaw, very good!
Brunswick stew and brisket were excellent!
Ordered $16 pulled pork as delivery ($21 total). Got about $3 worth of cold meat. Look at the photo and tell me if that's worth $16.
Not a good experience with delivery and average food I ordered online, I even paid for it and got a confirmation email with my order number. 15 mins past their estimated delivery time, I called them and they said we don't have any delivery services today. I asked for the refund and they said I can have it after two days!! Their options were either a refund after two days, or sending the food whenever they had the driver! I eventually got the food after 90 minutes and they paid the the delivery cost back.
Wings & ribs are good the fish isn't.
I order pulled pork sandwich and pigtails so delicious and the customers service are Great : ) c you soon
Amazing food and kind staff! The prices are just too high though if you ask me.
Hush Puppies
Nice quiet atmosphere, food was good.
Had S.O.S cater a Birthday party last night for 40 people. Everyone loved it! Relatively cheap considering the convenience. Ribs are awesome!! Thank you SOS
Delicious authentic BBQ, nice people, good service, family business, owners doing the cooking. Generous portions, great specials the restaurant is nothing fancy but, I would be very surprised if you didn’t seriously enjoy the food!
Nice environment, great staff, a bit pricey though.
Awesome pulled pork, at very good prices. You must go there to try it out, also very friendly staff. Perfect combination, great foods, great prices and great staff.
Awesome BBQ!! Giant juicy Turkey legs $12, pulled pork poutine $10 Texas BBQ sauce nice full bodied. Caroline Mustard Saice has a nice bite to it. Fish n Chips is a HUGE serving!! 1 piece $11 and 2 piece for $17. Sides; Mac n Cheese, Corn Bread and Brunswick Stew all delicious. Available for take out or dine in. Small intimate dining experience, service exceptional!
Food was amazing. Just wished the portion sizes were larger
We love it here! The fish and chips are amazing. But pulled pork is there specialty. The lady at the front counter is always so sweet.
The ribs are the best I've had - deliciously smokey, great sauce, and fall off the bone tender - and the corn bread is outstanding. The service is also very friendly.
well over priced for the quality of food was just okay nothing special portions were quite small for the platters the fries were terrible will not be returning
I ordered the Monster Poutine, it was delicious.
the meat had great flavor as well as the sauces that they came with! The hush puppies I recieved were burnt and the mac and cheese that we recieved had a couple hairs that did not match either of ours. the meat is the most important part but was disappointed with sides.
Delicious. Nuff said.
Staff was super friendly really good people... Food was awesome highly recommend this place
Great food and customer service. Never disappointed!
Wasn’t horrible, but also wasn’t that great. Very low quality food. I would suggest going to Lancaster smokehouse for this style of food.
After hearing others say how good this place was we tried it out for ourselves and was a bit disappointed. Brisket wasn't as juicy as expected and the fried fish was a bit thick on the batter.
For the price they should be giving better table service. Most meals were buy everything seperate pushing the price up. Pop in the bottle, no cup or ice, food not really hot, and condiments were put on my hot dog at the bottom of the bun leaving it very soggy and had to throw out most of bun. 3 ate, $60.00 and no one wanted to finish the food. Would we go back...no.
Big servings.
Amazing food. They serve the proteins unsauced so you can add your own barbeque sauce to it.
Very good BBQ. Rich flavor and delicious sauces. They have gluten free sauces and all of their meats are gluten free.
Food is good, but its a bit pricey for the casual walk-up setting. The servers also seemed to get flustered pretty easily.
Friendly staff and good BBQ
Ordered take out Received brisket sandwich Coleslaw, Mac and cheese, with a cornbread muffin, hush puppy’s and another brisket Also we ordered drinks that we did not receive ????♂️ But paid for ???? Food was alright I guess, maybe we are spoiled by the smoke house and crows foot, because those places are good, this place is not. The portions were very small and tasteless, we are actually about to head back out to grab food again directly after eating, not worth the money. The meat was also very dry, brisket was not tender. I’m at a cross roads on even posting this review because I don’t want to bad mouth a business during covid and harder times. But I was just so disappointed. Spent 50 bucks, not happy ????♂️
Ordered dinner for COVID-19 Fathers Day for 8 people. We pre-ordered and gave a pick up time. As I walked in the the door they were just packing the last of my order. Every one was friendly and the restaurant was well organized for social distancing. Food was hot & delicious! Also have to say for the price it is pretty darn good value. Worked out to about $32 a person and we have lot's of leftover to enjoy for the next few days.
Great food great prices.
Awesome people, delicious authentic smoked bbq. Reminds me of my time in Calgary working in a smoke pit. The portions are good and the prices are fair. It's obviously not as cheep as McDonalds but is also not garbage lol. I come here once a week for the pulled pork poutine. I loveeeee it
This is one of my all time favorite places for bbq! Dont wast another day, get in here and get the meat sweats. Everything I have eaten here has been top notch. Today would be about the 15th time I have got my fill. The staff are wonderful and food is the best. Descent selection of beer and drinks. Small place with some seating to enjoy the food. Alot of people do the take out but I enjoy comming in talking with the familiar faces and eating until it hurts to move. They also have daily specials and a lunch special. Like I said get down here and eat!!!
Fast service and friendly staff
Good food - good customer service!
We ordered pulled pork to go. The pork was moist and well smoked. A certified BBQ judge friend and I get together monthly to taste BBQ. I wish that he was with me to try this superb BBQ. Ask for BBQ sauce to add just a touch of flavor. It's a little pricey.
wont find a better bbq place in kw
I read the reviews and was really looking forward to a good bbq brisket. I don't know if it was a bad day or they didn't cook it properly, but the brisket was dry and tough. Can't say that I cared for the beans either. They taste like they're made from whole grain mustard and coffee.
So used to eating from their food truck, it was nice to eat in. We were there 45 minutes before closing. Still had great service and food was tasty.
Ate there many times, always a great experience
Incredible customer service that always nails it. The foods delicious too!
Good quality food, unfortunately the cost of the food seems overpriced for what you are receiving.
Every time I've been there, had a great experience. Great food. Good prices. A couple nice craft beers on tap. Super friendly and accommodating staff. Kid friendly. Recently renovated with some sweet retro booth seating to make a cozier atmosphere.
Great food with authentic southern taste. Best mustard bbq sauce I've had outside of Alabama
Great food wish they had one in Toronto.
Tasty "All In" sauce and fries, chicken wings tasted good but texture was a bit thick
I ordered the large poutine and it was barely bigger then the small. Texas sauce was way to sweet and overall poor quality. Plus I waited 10 mins for it to be cold. I would not order there again.
25.99 for this dinner. I was overindulged by the half way mark. The portions did not seem large but I certainly struggled in volume to finish. The key was the flavours and textures. The ribs were fall off the bone. The pulled brisket was smokey and delicious the hush puppies were perfectly doey and delicious but the sleeper was the Brunswick stew... ridiculously flavorful. The only change I would make is the cornbread as I am a traditionalist on this in that I like the warm rectangular ones with the crusty tops. The service was a folky home cooking feel with friendly neighborhood types. This is a definite go again place.
First time at SOS and have to say I was not disappointed in any way. Brisket was moist, pulled pork just wet enough, ribs falling off the bone. Sides fabulous. My son has some smoked wings and his saucy face said it all. Quick service on a Saturday lunch. I'd recommend them to all in KW area.
The best bbq in Kitchener! The food is delicious and the restaurant is quirky and fun. Honestly the best onion rings I've ever had!
Ordered a bunch of takeout for superbowl, $360 to be exact. Ordered the pulled pork, wings, fries, mac & cheese. It was ready on time, and everyone loved it.
Dinner
I frequently buy food from here for my staff at Summit Vape Company....best bbq in Kitchener Waterloo and awesome prices
Wasn't impressed and was way over priced for what you get. I could also make better Mac and cheese from a box... Won't be going back anytime soon...
They have some great options on the menu here! I've ordered something new everytime and I have never been disappointed. This might be my new fav. :)
Ordered two meals on Father's Day and even though the place was crazy busy the food was still amazing.
Got the pulled brisket sandwich. The beef was dry and tough but the bun and bbq sauces were good quality. For a 13$ sandwich I’d expect a bit better or at least more meat. Lady I dealt with was not the most pleasant either. Menu was confusing.
Bought wings and fries. Wings were good as usual. The fries were terrible, either double or tripled fried. From 2 regular size servings, thru at least half out due to burnt, over fried or dry tasting. This is not the first time this has occurred. If I order again, likely will only be the wings.
Excellent food. Brisket to die for...sweet bbq sauce and many others to choose from. You can add the sauces yourself.
I thought I would try a new restaurant for lunch on Skip and I was really disappointed with my purchase. I looked at the reviews and everything seemed good so I went ahead and ordered the pulled pork combo. The picture with the price on bottom corner is what I was expecting to receive. I did order it heaped instead of on a bun. That plate in the picture is heaped... I debated ordering a side salad and am glad i did! The other picture is what I received. A barely half full extra small takeout container and 8 hush puppies. I don't know if this is just a skip the dished problem but im not happy and I'm still hungry. Flavour is there but this is the only bbq place that I have starved at.
A quaint little barbecue spot. Great quality food for reasonable prices. Extremely friendly staff. Will definitely make a trip back!
Bomb poutine! Seriously
Tried this place because we were having a craving for ribs. Was very impressed with the portions and flavour. Good job. Keep it up. Please support your local family run businesses people! These guys are doing a great job!
I was a long time fan of SOS BBQ and the amazing meat and sides that came from here. Recently the food quality seems to have gone down hill. Had the ribs, brisket, chicken and pork along with sides of coleslaw, beans and macaroni. The meat was dry and pretty bland despite the amazing looking smoke rings. This is in stark contract to what it tasted like last year where the meat was moist and filled with wonderful flavor. The sides have changed too. They went from great beans and some of the best coleslaw to meh at best beans and store shelf quality coleslaw.
Ribs. Good. Tender. Juicy. Big. Fatty. Delicious. Mmmm.... Can't properly.... review.... Devowering ribs. Tasty. Sauce. Good sauce. Eat. Meat. Spicy.... Everything except the sides. Fries are really salty. Onion rings, while delicious, are super greasy. Will order again... and again.... and again...
This is an underrated gem. side dishes are ok but their smoked meats are absolutely sublime. They are a hardworking family business. every time I have ordered delivery it is the owners who bring it to the door. I get the feeling that they do this because they love it and they have a passion for it.
Great ribs. Nice little restaurant.
So good.
Best BBQ around
As someone who grew up in both North Carolina and Texas this is true great authentic taste. Only issue is it makes me home sick...
Not too bad. Add more sauce if the flavour is too light
Got brisket combo with mac n cheese. Brisket was okay but came cold, smaller portion than expected. Mac n cheese was flavourless and a watery consistency. Not ordering again.
Restaurant was clean and not crowded. Staff was helpful. The portions were pretty small for the price, it seemed this way on thee entire menu. We all had a different flavour of chicken wings, and we found none of them to anything extraordinary.
So so good!!!
Feels like the food quality is fast food level. I wouldnt call it bad but it certainly wasnt good. I had pulled pork, peameal, mac n cheese and stew. Presentation was lackluster. Portions are small. Compared to the lancaster smokehouse it just isnt a competition at all.
The smoked wings were excellent and juicy!
We tried SOS Barbecue for the first time today. It was in a word, disappointing! The pulled pork and buns were very dry, and was lacking the rich, smoky flavour that other restaurants seem to atain. The poutine I had was OK, but not great. There was lots of gravy and cheese, but the gravy was sort of so so for flavour. The coleslaw was OK, but again, lacked the flavour the excellent slaw has. I think this restaurant has good potential if they pay more attention to the fine details that make a restaurant outstanding. I think the quantity of food served was adequate for the price, but not an outstanding deal.
Good BBQ, solid menu, would recommend. I've traveled through the South and SOS BBQ stands up pretty well to places I've visited in Texas, Missouri, Georgia, Tennessee and elsewhere. We had the sliced brisket and the pulled pork, with sweet BBQ and Carolina sauces. Slaw. Hush Puppies. Corn Bread. Mac and Cheese. Brisket and pork were tasty. These folks clearly know their way around a smoker. Well made, flavourful, and tender. Slaw was creamy and tasty. Sauces were on point. Had to get the sweet sauce for the non-spicy fans in my house. Carolina sauce was what I hoped for and went well on the pork and the brisket. Hush puppies were moist and tender and delicious. Not a complaint, but the mac and cheese was average. It was tasty, but did not stand out. The corn bread was more "home-style" than "artisanal", and it came in modest muffin-cup sized portions. My usual preference is for a coarser, pan-cooked corn bread cut into pieces, but this corn bread was tasty, nonetheless.
Would love to go back but the guy who was working made fun of the way I ordered my food right in front of me... So if he is not working I will go back
Have to say that I was very impressed with this place. Drove from Cambridge to try it. They have hard to find hush puppies and they are amazing. Had the smoked burger and fries. Outstanding. My new fav place. Thanks guys.
Delicious smoked food! The staff were very friendly and helpful, the food was fairly priced and the environment was great for a fast sit in restaurant. I would certainly come back here.
Wanted a low-key, good meal. Wow! Did this ever hit the spot. Pulled pork and ribs are amazing. Excellent fries and onion rings. Great service. Reasonable cost. We'll be coming back!!!
First time through their doors. Can't say I've a great deal of experience with southern fair. My better half was quite satisfied. Especially with the onion rings which she says no ome else has done better. She also enjoyed the pulled chicken sandwich. I on the other hand wasn't nearly as happy which is why I can't give it a 5 stars. The pulled pork tasted… like… pork. That is to say that the barbecue sauce a side, the pork had no special favour, no seasoning, no spice. So the fare was nice, the place clean I'll have to try it again before I pass a final judgement. I liked it well enough to try it again. P. S. My wife is from the south. She knows Southern cooking
I've been to some 5 star, award winning BBQ restaurants in the southern United States. In my opinion this restaurant is as good, if not better! I find the U.S. places have too heavy a smoke flavour for my liking. S.O.S. has the perfect amount of smoke undertones. The pricing was excellent compared with other eating establishments. I will be returning next time I come to Kitchener to shop at Lowe's (7 minutes away). They seem to be VERY popular for take out, and the food comes out quick.
I wasn't sure what to expect from a BBQ place in Ontario, but the pulled pork sandwich and Brunswick stew were good. I still prefer the BBQ down in North Carolina though, but I would come here again. The service is good and the staff is friendly. The prices are reasonable. Give this place a try.
Fantastic. It's a must try . Great food great service.
Came here on Sunday for Breakfast. Limited breakfast menu, only three items. Food was pretty good, generous serving (had the brisket skillet). My main problem is that they appear to be extremely wasteful. Everything was disposable, plastic cutlery, paper packages of salt and pepper, ketchup was also packaged. Even the coffee was served in styrofoam cups and when we asked for refills, they brought new styrofoam cups to the table.
Wonderful good Friday fish and chips. Walked in and had food in 5 minutes. Incredible coleslaw too!
So far, this has been the best BBQ experience that I've had in Kitchener. Ordered the 1lbs brisket, honey garlic wings, mac&cheese and fries and every bite was worth every penny. The staff was fantastic and we got our food relatively quickly. The size of the restaurant gives a family vibe, as it is cozy and clean. Overall, i had a fantastic experience and the food was delicious, best brisket in Kitchener I have ever tasted !
Best in the city
Fantastic independent restaurant. Never had a bad experience here. They have all the little extras you could hope for along with knowledgeable staff.
Great food and Great service!! A real restaraunt surrounded by fast food.
My brother actually found this place! The food was delicious and reasonably priced! The portions sizes was great. Defiantly coming back!
The small poutine that I got wasn't bad. The flavour was great but food was cold, along with there wasn't much gravy in my meal.
Small serving size.
Food was good and quick, down to earth establishment!
Honestly I love this place, I especially love their Brunswick stew fries!
My friend and I both felt sick after Eating here very disappointed
First time here. Food was amazing!! Staff was very helpful and kind. Definitely will be back
If you want expensive food that taste good but staff can smile more
Don't miss the chance to dine-in or take'out. The food from here is the best. More than worth the stop
The staff was extremely friendly and helpful. A bit confusing to order at the front counter and then wait to be server table side. Lots of different choices of sauces. Had the pulled pork sandwich which was good.
A rather hidden little place that delivers big on flavour. Had the pulled chicken family platter. The beans were decent, not over done with smoke flavour. Tried the Mac n cheese which was ok, somewhat too generic. Seemed like Mac cheese with ketchup added. No complaints other than the side was a little small. Overall pretty good. People looked to be enjoying their meals and I’m sure there are plenty of fans of this place. Definitely if you’re hankering some good bbq food, can’t go wrong here. The lady at the till is very friendly and welcoming. That to me means a lot. I like that. I’m sure we shall return!!
The ribs are fantastic. Fall of the bone meat, and the fries are really good. Service is very polite and friendly. Just a note for anyone reading these reviews and about the people whining about the price. I've only had the ribs but 9 ribs for $19? And they are smoked with a REAL smoker, and its very, very tasty, To all the cry babies complaining about the price, the McDonalds is across the street.
I found the the food to be cold, ribs are good though. I noticed too being a family owned business, anyone working for them that isn't family, gets treated unfairly. Last employee i saw there at the time was getting told what to do, and how to do things by others that weren't even managers. It didn't seem right to me at all to see someone get yelled at like that by more than one person. For me to see that kind of behavior, I'm not to interested in support this restaurant. Management seems unorganized in that regard. I heard they have a reputation for that kind of unnecessary behavior though.
Awesome flavours without the 2500km drive to Alabama. The brisket is amazing! Totally worth the price.
Great dine-in with the new plush booth's!
Food was great and so was the service.
When I go to kitchener this is my first stop, pulled pork poutine with southern bbq flair, great job guys
The food here is ok! The problem with Souther Ontario Smoked BBQ is I find them over priced!!! I find all their food over priced and thus the biggest reason for the low rating !!! And I would say I ve tasted better ribs elsewhere!!!
Ordered delivery for a group of 12 people, and everyone commented on how delicious the food was!!! Delivery was very punctual.
Yum! Great pulled pork!
Not what I expected for the price I paid. For $30.00 I expected more food. The sides are too small, they gave one tiny piece of corn bread and the meat portions are small. Flavour is ok but I was truly disappointed with my experience.
An old factory converted into a nice outlet mall with lots of selection. I love how they kept some of the old factory machinery parts as statuary. But most of all we come for the Southworks Antique Mall. Great mult-vendor mall with tons to see. Mostly smalls - but lots and lots of 'em. Some good prices too.
Food is good. Small place. Didn't have to wait long for the food. Delicious
Delicious brisket
By far one of the BEST BBQ wings! the service is great and the pricing is just right , try the ribs as they are equally amazing!
We've only been there twice now but I want to try everything on the menu. Sooooo gooood!!!!!!
Solid food but terribly slow service. They screwed up the order and when I phoned to notify them, they swore and hung up.
2 out of 3 people that ate here ended up very sick. Also, the food probably tasted as good coming up as it did going down. Go to Lancaster.
DELICIOUS FOOD AND EXCELLENT SERVICE. highly recommend the smoked burger. We will be back for sure!!
Pulled pork was cold and overpriced. Won't be back.
I would love to bandwagon and join the "price" argument. But, I'm a middle class hard working man who has already accepted that beef prices are outrageous. Not only that, cattle farmers are losing money. When you consider the cost or good quality beef, combined with hours of smoking and close attention to colour and moisture. Do you understand how hard it is to achieve that pink ribboning right underneath the smoked surface?. It may seem pricey, I know. But if you only knew what goes into true bbq. I will gladly support SOS for life. Not just because it's better than anything I've tasted in my last 6 years of rib fest attendance. But, because it's Canadian.
Excellent food. Friendly staff. Doesn't take too long to get your food. Consistently good. Have been going since they first opened this location and I have yet to have a bad experience.
With out doubt the best ribs in the Region of Waterloo ! Very difficult to choose which item to select off the extensive BBQ menu and which side to accompany it with. Portions are more than generous and service is so pleasant and fast . Just the best all around BBQ restaurant in the area!!
A good selection of items to choose from.
Top notch
So good. Truly. The portions seemed to have decreased of late but what a wonderful family!
No good. Rude staff and overpriced food. Brisket sucks.
Sorry, It was ok. Nothing special.
ordered the 1 lb wings. got home felt light got my kitchen scale, 10.6 oz. in the box with the sauce. 16oz is a pound. figure i just paid for 1/2 a pound. wife got 6 bone ribs, mostly grizzle. We've eaten here several times before, and it seems like the price goes up and the quality has gone down each time ... oh well guess its time to move on
Good bbq and affordable prices
Good prices. Excellent meats. Really yummy selection of sauces.
Its ok
Great all around
Delicious BBQ
Great fish n chips!!!!!!!! Best in the region, love it! ????
Meal type
Amazing
By Far the best wings I've ever eaten in my life! The fries were amazing aswell Great place for my first time there! Will be going there alot more often.
Just ordered this off Uber eats and it was fantastic. Had the pulled chicken with slaw and beans. My husband had the onion rings and pulled rib. Very flavourful and super yummy ! Will be back !
Food was delicious
Great Brisket, and very gluten free friendly for Celiacs!
Good food great fries, not sure why they taste so good. The staff are well meaning but sometimes come across as a bit abrupt, the food more than makes up for it!
Best BBQ in town by far great customer service great food ... as long as they are open i will go period! Edit: Okay these people have the best customer service ever. I have been a regular here for a couple years now i had a minor issue.that was made right immediately by the owner! Highly recommended family owned local business!!!!!
Great food, staff and beer games!
Always tasty food. Melt in your mouth meat, bold sauces, all around a great place. Only complaint is its closed Tuesdays on my day off.
Some of the best ribs i have ever had came from this place. I love them. I love them so much i forgot to take a picture haha. I strongly recommand that if you are a rib lover you check this place out. They have several sauces that suits all needs. And a friend knowledgable staff to go along with it.
A+ Food; An authentic southern taste and menu. My family really enjoyed this place and we’ll come back. The format is takeout-focused and the dine-in experience is clean, cozy and comfortable. If you have a craving for some really good smoked meat with an authentic Texas taste I recommend the brisket with one of their special sauces. Also, the French fries are kid approved, according to an 8 year old. (Ketchup, vinegar, and loads of wipes at the booths too!)
Really good place, would definitely recommend
Excellent food quality. Good variety within the spectrum of barbeque food. Atmosphere consistent with food, but I'm not sure I like the order counter as opposed to table service. Overall, these misgivings are overshadowed by the quality and taste in the food.
The meat was alright, hushpuppies pretty good, but the Mac and Cheese was pretty bad. Too pricy for the quality overall
We ordered the 20 person BBQ platter for dinner. SOS had big portion sizes and servings I was amazed that we had so much food leftover. (We have big eaters in our family). Everyone left full and everyone loved the ribs. 1st time ordering from here. We are definitely going back They also happen to be one of the few BBQ places open on a Sunday! Need our BBQ with our Football on Sundays
Food is good, but the lady behind the counter is not very friendly. Did not even say Thank you. Very disappointed. The food portions was very small for the money we paid for.
Tried this place on New Year's Day at the suggestion of my girlfriend. First appearance was the place smelled great! But really small and with the door opening and closing its cold inside when trying to eat and your food gets cold fast! There was steady flow of pickup orders. I ordered the rib special for $18. This does not come with anything, just a rack of ribs. :( you have to pay for any side what so ever, this was not so impressive when I can go most places and get a full rib dinner for close to that and have a nice sit down in a nice warm inviting table service restaurant. The rib was tender but flavourless, I had to add a lot of bbq sauce and just ate half the order as it was sadly a big let down for such a price (the special price) My wife had the pulled brisket with onion rings, and again way over priced after having to pay to add any side $10 for a small lump of meat on a thick oversized yellow no appetizing bun. She lived the flavour or the meat, I also thought it was pretty good but such a tiny lump of meat for the price was shocking, the onion rings were good also. My daughter had the pulled pork with added fries and gravy. Again small over sized lump of meat for such a price. The meat was good and tender. Not great but good. The fries were listed as fresh cut, very thin fresh cut that had a funny taste not the tasty fresh cut fries you could expect. (Possibly frozen after being cut or sitting long in water or old oil. The fries had that brown tinge). There was large helping of the fries but with the off taste they were not really eaten. The gravy tasted great!!! Way too runny more like a soup but the taste was great. I would possibly come again for pick up only and eat warm at home, only for the brisket and a bunch of gravy then pick up fries on the way home from somewhere. However at the tiny portion for such a price probably not, the taste yes great but not at such a price vs quantity. I would not recommend this place to any friends, family,co workers based on the price vs quantity. I would feel bad sending them to pay such a price and get so little. The workers seemed nice, the older gentleman seemed grumpy made you not want to ask for anything. The place was clean , including the bathrooms. They make you pay before you get your food, which I feel is wrong almost like they know they better make you pay before you see what your getting. I thought I heard someone grumble about a tip when we left but my girlfriend tipped $5 when she paid which she promptly regretted once the food came. So no we are not going to tip again when leaving. $60 for 3 people to eat very small about of food, we could have had all you can eat sushi at Ye's sushi for $20. Per person.
Damn fine BBQ.
Had the “naked” wings from here and flavour was on point. Would like to try a sauce from here to fully decide if it’s a 5 or not
Ordered a 3 meat platter and a Mac and cheese as a side, they got me fries instead. I asked if I could have my Mac and cheese, they said it was a kitchen mistake because the order indeed said Mac and cheese. They took the whole platter back inside, removed all the fries (!!!) and 3-4 minutes later they brought the platter back to the table with no sides, saying they would bring me the Mac and cheese in a minute, which I got in a few more minutes. Food was cold and dry. It's not worth it in my opinion, there are more tradicional bbq places in town, better and cheaper. You know where I'm talking about.
Never write reviews but couldn't help this time around. Family of four with a 5yr old and 2 yr old absolutely love our family meal. Pulled pork, pulled chicken, coleslaw, cornbread and poutine. Everything was cooked to perfection and our kids couldn't get enough which is saying alot. Thank you for the amazing Friday night take out meal
I ordered a brisket without a bun. Looking at the photo of it on doordash it seemed like a decent bunch of slices of brisket. I'm trying to limit my caloric intake, but when my order arrived I was VERY disappointed with what came as I would call "Bird food". Literally a tiny container with maybe only HALF of brisket slices of what I saw on doordash, and photos of other posters with their Brisket dishes. Brisket was dry, sauce and coleslaw was ok. Get a grip, and fix your portion sizes! The other reviewers confirm the same thing when you order on Skip or Doordash. This is a TOTAL RIPOFF!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Had lunch special and it was delicious
So far, this has been the best BBQ experience that I've had in Kitchener. Ordered the 1lbs brisket, honey garlic wings, mac&cheese and fries and every bite was worth every penny. The staff was fantastic and we got our food relatively quickly. The size of the restaurant gives a family vibe, as it is cozy and clean. Overall, i had a fantastic experience and the food was delicious, best brisket in Kitchener I have ever tasted !
Yummy
Love the food I can't stop eating it
The food and staff were both excellent.
Ordered a lb of smoked wings and it looked rather small so I put it on my kitchen scale and it was only 3/4 of a lb. Complaints to the restaurant went unanswered. False advertising, and rude service. This place is a joke.
Easily, without a doubt the best hamburgers in all of Kitchener - Waterloo. If I was a wealthy man I would exclusively eat from this restaurant.
Better and more affordable than other barbecue restaurants in the city. Very friendly family atmosphere.
The first visit was only meh! But we tried it again and really enjoyed it. Waiter/server/cashier was top notch
Yum!
Everything was DELICIOUS! Service was excellent! We both ordered the lunch special, one pulled pork and one pulled chicken, one with fries and one with rings. Our plates were full with generous portions, served hot and fresh, very impressed! The booths were a cool retro style, very clean and comfortable, I highly recommend this place!
While the meat was fantastic, the sides were a little flat. Service was excellent though.
Great inside and wonderful staff. Food was great too.
I ordered a pulled pork platter with smoked wings and everything was amazing. Each sauce I had (carolina, SOS & Sweet BBQ) was distinct and flavourfull. The mac n cheese was a hit for everyone, even a little one. I had no idea that I'd be able to get some Hush Puppies that good without going south. I can't wait to go back to try their brisket and ribs. I also really appreciate that all their to-go packaging is either recyclable or able to go into the compost bin. I got my order to go, and the food was ready even though I arrived early. Next time I'll dine in!
My new fav bbq place. I have had my share of southern bbq - hands down the best so far. You do not get this kind of clean flavours with bbqed meat without using good quality meat. I normally feel bloated and tired after eating bbq. Not from this place. It is just good quality food. I will be coming back for sure.
Onion rings and wings were really good, but mac and cheese was a bit watery, pulled chicken was chopped chicken. Online ordering doesn't make it clear how the meat's and sauces go together (I expected sauces to come on the side based on their interface).
Tried for the first time tonight. One word. WOW!! Amazing food deliciously prepared. Burgers are homemade, juicy and cooked to perfection. The stew was incredible too.
Went and ordered take out. Cash register had plexiglass dividers and plenty of signs requiring physical distancing. Ordering up was quick, grabbed 2 two meat platters. Staff working was friendly and food came in about 5 mins. Prices could be better though, dinner for two adds up
Just had lunch here and i am impressed. Had their pulled pork lunch special and it was amazing. Plenty of pulled pork cooked perfectsly, increadible fries and a bottle of pop for $10. This place is a hidden gem. Deffinatley coming back.
Came here for my birthday, the Monster Poutine was Epic!!!
Awesome BBQ. Would definitely recommend it in the k/w.
Brisket sandwich was a little dried but these ribs are easy the best I've had in town. Hand made onion rings are spot on as well. Will be coming back for my next rib fix.
Hit the spot, friendly staff and good food.
This place has great food but the service lately has been terrible! On Friday, May 4th, my girlfriend and I decided to order take-out from them. We looked at their menu and put together an order for dinner and I also wanted to order a pound of brisket on the side to nibble on during the weekend. I called them around 7:00pm. The phone rang for awhile and no one picked up. I called them back in 15 minutes and a woman picked up the phone. She asked me "How can I help you?" I said "Hi, I'd like to place an order for pick-up." She said "I'm sorry, we are backed up 45 minutes. If you would like to come in to the restaurant, we may be able to serve you." Then she immediately hung up the phone! This place needs to learn the basics about running a restaurant, specifically one that offers take-out. First - If you're short staffed or very busy and backed up, you never tell a call-in customer you can't help them. Tell them you can take their order, but they may have to wait longer then normal. Take their order and add it to the end of your order list. If they told me this, It wouldn't have bothered me! The food is great and we we were not in a rush. Then you can suggest that if they come into the restaurant, they may be able to serve you quicker. Second - Never hang up on the customer! What if I was a first time caller? I would never give you my business again. SOS is a new business and this is not how you develop a customer base. Additionally, the order my girlfriend and I put together was roughly $70 worth of food! What business would turn down a $70 take-out order? They didn't even ask what I wanted to order. They didn't try to accommodate me at all. I want to stress that this place has great food. I've never had a problem with the food ever. But some basic customer service goes a long way. If they didn't have the best brisket in town, I may have contemplated spending my money elsewhere. Sincerely, Concerned Customer
This place is absolutely terrible, we order a full rack of ribs and large fries . Our ribs had a rancid after taste full of fat and dry meet and the fries were loaded with salt. Its sad to say the only good experience we had was our Coca-Cola drink. The owner noticed we got up and were leaving with our plates basically untouched. She apologized for the food and expressed that it wasn't their fault but their suppliers. She then expressed that next time we ask for our fries with no salt so we could add it our selfs. I'm sorry but it should be the restaurants responsibility to gage how much salt is put on their fries. She had an excuse for everything and would not take ownership for serving a terrible meal. Overall this place gets 0 stars
This is just not acceptable. It is a big SOS (help) to you guys. I don't even know where to start. First, I have to admit the restaurant was clean and spotless. Now let's talk about the food: *The cornbread was good despite the baking powder taste. *I went for the 3 meat platter and decided to choose rib, pulled pork and the brisket. -ribs:I got served 3 bone ribs which is extremely smaller compared to the 6 bone rib that other competitors like Lancaster smoke house serves or q bbq. When it comes to the taste it was okay. Not exceptional. -pulled pork: I dont even know what to say, it wasn't that at all. All I tasted was just the sweetness from the BBQ sauce. -brisket:this for me was the huge let down. I had been to other BBQ smoke restaurants like Lancaster smoke house or q BBQ smoke house in Cambridge. I can tell all of them will serve brisket without charging extra $2 as SOS. To make matters worse, it wasn't fresh at all and really tasted as something that was cooked few days ago. Overall, the brisket is not worth it. -the sides: I chose onion rings and Mac n cheese. The onion rings tasted great but the mac and cheese was really a joke (really no offense). I don't think it deserves to be called mac and cheese as it didn't taste cheese at all. I felt like I was having mac and some random sauce. Final Verdict: Unfortunately, I won't be going there any more. It was my first and last time. I paid alltogether $37 including taxes. It wasn't worth it. At least I tried.
All the meat is smoked here, with 10 homemade sauces available. We had the brisket and the chicken wings - both were 10/10. It's easy to overlook this place because it is so well hidden in the plaza, but you'd be missing out if you did!
Good atmosphere, casual drop in. Food was beyond expectation and reminded me of home cooking. Service was fast and attentive. Menu was full and hard to choose from. This is a great place to eat.
Proper southern style BBQ, no frills just delicious, perfectly rendered meat.
Not impressed - the middle aged man operating the cash appeared quite annoyed with my questions about the food and recommendations...spent $72.00 on pulled pork, brisket, mac and cheese, and beans...the pulled pork was "ok", the brisket was disgusting - so dry and lifeless that not even bbq sauce saved it - we tossed it - the mac and cheese noodles were tough, the beans were whatever... I would not recommend any of the dishes I ordered from this restaurant...waste of my money and overall disappointment. FYI I drove to the East end of Toronto to get real BBQ food from @BeachHillBbq....and I will make that drive again before I ever consider giving Southern Ontario Smoked BBQ my hard earned dollars again. The one star is for he polite and very pleasant woman that was also working at the counter, she was a breath of fresh air.
I love their burgers and hot dogs, but their poutines are fantastic! The BBQ sauces are delicious, and the meats are cooked to perfection. The hush puppies are great, too.
Was not a good experience for me and i was really excited. Got the 2 meat platter and the brisket was dry and not flavourful. Got mac and cheese and it was basically kraft dinner but not even with the cheese powder.. comes in a pre-packaged container not made in house. Cornbread is the size a tiny muffin. Ribs were tender. Stomach is feeling weird after the mac and cheese and I only took a bite. I wouldnt go back :/
Service was okay, the lady who helped us initially was great but after she left the good service seemed to leave with her. My husband ordered the Turkey leg which was good, fries were also good with his meal. I ordered a pulled pork poutine and a side of mac and cheese. At a southern bbq restaurant I expected a pretty hearty bowl of some good old fashioned home made mac and cheese with some real cheddar cheese and what came out was very on par with a box of Kraft dinner in my opinion. The poutine came out without the pulled pork on it which the cook noticed right away and proceeded to go get a bowl of pulled pork to put on the side of my plate, but he forgot the barbecue sauce, which, not a hug deal because they have all the sauces available to customers so you can add extra if you want. The poutine itself was okay - the gravy was rather salty and had a bit of a bitter taste to it, but the fries were decent and they used real cheese curds which was appreciated. Overall it wasn't an awful experience, but I personally wouldn't recommend it and I don't believe we will be going back to try it again.
Poutine was mediocre at best didn't have gravy on it and the meat was ok
It was good. Sauces are great. I prefer more bark/chew on my BBQ.
Great soup.
We were interested to try a bbq joint within walking distance of our home. We came here for dinner on a Saturday evening and no other customers were in the restaurant, that should have been our first sign. We ordered the brisket, Cajun smoked wings, caesar salad and corn bread. We received very small amount of the brisket, definitely not a meal/dinner portion. The wings said smoked but they were crunchy and the dry Cajun spice had no flavour. Cornbread was not nice, just dry. Because we didn’t make the brisket a combo we didn’t even get water to drink. Neither of us were full so on the way home we both got a shawarma wrap. Can’t find one nice thing to say about this place. Just head to Lancaster Smokehouse for a proper bbq experience.
It's not my top BBQ destination, but this is still a good BBQ option. We ordered takeout: pulled pork poutine and a two meat platter - ribs and brisket, with sides of onion rings, mac and cheese, and brunswick stew (comes with two, and we ordered an extra side). I ordered during off-peak hours, so the the service was really fast and I was able to pick up my order in 15 minutes after calling. The meat was all cooked well and was tasty. The onion rings were a real standout, especially as I am weary about fried foods for takeout that often got soggy during transport. These were crispy and light, and I'd highly recommend them. This wouldn't be my first choice, but if someone suggested going here, I would certainly not object.
Ordering the meat plater was a waste of money and time. Very small portion, all slopped in a box together for you. The mac n "cheese" doesn't even have cheese -- it's noodles in some watery cream sauce. The "house coleslaw" was absolutely from a bag. The chicken wings were alright, the dry rub is something that worked out, but made the wings too dry to eat for my daughter -nothing special... she did love the "cupcake" though (we thought the cornbread was very sweet)
Excellent food and choices with pop shop
Really good
Very quaint. Delicious and traditional southern BBQ. Got the 3 meat platter, huge portions, nicely smoked brisket and pork ribs. Staff is very nice and friendly. 5/5
After eating here many times (and loving it!) we decided to order meat by the pound to cater our backyard wedding. The meat was so fantastic - we had so many compliments on it! The staff at SOS were really helpful in instructing us on the best way to heat up the meat. Everything came vacuum packed so it only had to be tossed in the oven at a low temperature and then served. The only feedback I would give for anyone wanting to order a larger order would be to give yourself enough lead time as email can be a little slow which is probably due to their limited days open. 10/10 would order again for a family event!
brisket was dry
It was....fine. Ordered the 2 meat platter with ribs and sliced brisket - it was good but the portions were tiny. Sides were the onion rings and "Mac and cheese" though as someone else recently commented, the Mac was missing the cheese though my daughter seemed to like it and I found the onion rings greasy. All in all, again it was fine but you'll get better bang for your buck elsewhere.
Better places in town for smokehouse food.
Very good portion sizes, great prices and friendly staff providing excellent service. Not much more you can ask for.
Excellent food, great staff. Meat so tender there is no knife required. Flavor stands up on its own without sauce. Highly recommended.
The ribs are Ribalicious....as far as I can tell they have the best ribs in the kw region! The onion rings are the real deal as well! Have enjoyed this establishment many times
I have eaten here several times and have found the food to be average. I won't be returning however because of an unpleasant experience I had with one of their staff. I had the food delivered and when the delivery man arrived he was incredibly rude. He shook his head, huffed at me and chastised me like I was a child because according to him he was banging on the door for several minutes. He was also rude in how he handed me back my change. First of all why did you wait all that time to ring the door bell if no one heard the knocking? Also you are in the service industry so have a little more respect for the people who are indirectly paying you and are directly paying the company you work for.
best food and portions ever. The homemade sauces are fantastic and fries are amazing.
Really great food. Prices are good too. Friendly service. Will definitely be going back.
The meat is good the fish is not. They only have haddock and the breading is heavy and tastes funny. My fish had parts where the breading was raw underneath. Fish hut will remain my go to for fish.
Got pulled pork sandwiches from here. My girlfriend and I loved them. The portions of meat are very fair and you get more than enough for the sides. Great BBQ !
Amazing food that keeps us cooking back; the ribs and the summer-meat-topped poutine are the highlights of the menu. The restaurant is quaint, a real mom-and-pop business that is proud of what they've built. Haven't eaten in yet, but take-out is fantastic!
The food is great.
So good. Definitely an underrated place to get food in Waterloo. I love their pulled pork and ribs as well as their poutine.
Service
Great food. Great service. Come hungry, you will be full after.
Best Barbecue in the area. Maybe in the world.
Fantastic meats, sauces and service
2 out of 3 people that ate here ended up very sick. Also, the food probably tasted as good coming up as it did going down. Go to Lancaster.
Went here to try the ribs and was not disappointed, the friendly atmosphere when I entered and I got the full rack with the spicy mustard bbq sauce, it definately was what I needed. I would recommend it to everyone.
Very good food and the staff was extremely polite and friendly.
