Fantastic little cafe on Gottingen Street. Very warm, cozy room, I really enjoyed my visit. I tried the London Fog tea at the barista’s suggestion and I’m glad I did: it was wonderful, as was the bacon cheeseburger. The ingredients were as fresh as if I had gotten it at some expensive, upscale restaurant on the waterfront- except it tasted better and at half the price. Alteregos Cafe is actually quite an important business in the community. Not only does it serve excellent coffees, teas, and food at prices everyone can afford, but it also takes in travelers needing an inexpensive place to stay, for the cafe is attached to a backpackers hostel. (Speaking of which, the young lady who made my tea deserves a raise in pay: besides preparing my tea, she also made my burger AND checked in a bunch of guests. All things of which she did amiably and professionally.) The only other place I’ve enjoyed eating at as much as Alteregos is The Henry House. **Added shortly after: This is NOT a “sketchy area”. I thought it was a perfectly lovely area; the few people I passed were friendly, there’s some other great businesses open on both sides of the street, and there’s some brilliant old homes I took pictures of as I headed down Cunard Street. Maybe it used to be bad, but it’s a nice neighborhood to walk around and explore now because I had a great time. (Also, the breathtaking St Patrick’s Church needs a community fundraiser though... it’s too beautiful to stand silent all week except for two hours on Sunday morning.)

I wasn't all too keen about the individuals behind the counter. Nonetheless, good place. A theatre on either side of place, location is impeccable.

No AC in the rooms . Extremely humid and hot . Cafe seems dirty and unkept . Rats in the patio of the cafe/hostel Staff not knowledgable of area Nice staff . And cheap craft drinks .

Amber Tucker (leafyshivers)

I've never stayed at the hostel, but the cafe is a fave hangout spot/drinking hole any hour of the day or evening. Great inexpensive food and drinks, and really wonderful staff. Alteregos deserves more appresh that it gets.

Incredible food and a really relaxing atmosphere make this a favorite lunch spot. Stop by early to get your hands on the famous jerk chicken, so delicious it never lasts long. We will both order the same dish if it's still available.

Alteregos is on of my favorite places to go for coffee. The coffee is good and they have very nice food offerings. The vibe is hip and relaxed and they usually have dance music playing to keep your toe tapping as you enjoy your coffee. Sometimes there are fun events at night so keep your eye out for postings.

A great little spot to hang out. Beverages such as coffee, juice, good beer and cider, as well as delicious food like samosas and Mac and cheese casserole. Staff is always friendly, it has a great atmosphere in a really convenient location. As a cafe, this place gets an A+.

i Really enjoy this cafe for its good coffee and food options at a very reasonable price but above all it’s the environment and atmosphere you can’t beat! Great place to meet friend or finish up some work or just even by yourself the staff are generally friendly and there’s lots of great local art to admire. I love when they host poetry nights aswell!

This is one of those hidden gems that feels so good to discover. Absolutely delish.

Simon Ross-Siegel

It's a good place for a quick drip coffee in the morning, and a nice place to have an afternoon coffee date. The music played ranges from "memories of wind and grass" to Dubstep from a megaphone. It's all part of the charm in my opinion.

Best little cafe in the city ❤

Mila McKay

Such a great shop. Wonderful food. And very important community resource. Love love love this shop.

I'd been here several times for early Saturday breakfast a few years ago. Really liked the various menu items, could usually get a table and sit with a book for an hour and be very content. Fast forward to 2021 and came for a weekday lunch with a coworker. To be continued as my phone won't let me type beyond this sentence in this app...?

Best. Cafe. Ever.

Really disappointed in the amount of wast consumed in one meal. We ate in so that we didn’t have to take any plastic away but the shake came in single use plastic with a straw and then the only thing that was re usable was the tray my burrito came on which if this is to stop the spread of germs then the trays gunna do it alone. I hope they can address the waste problem then this would be a healthy eco conscious place to dine. This is a list of all the items that would of been thrown away in one meal. Tin foil wrap Paper bag for fries Single use plastic cup for tomatoes ketchup Single use cup Single use cup lid Single use straw Napkins. Really if I you ate in all you need would be a napkin at a far. It’s 2020 and we are in a very developed country, We shouldn’t be this wasteful. Food was tasty! Shake was tasty!

Favorite coffee shop in the city. Great coffee, reasonable prices on tasty food, and they're even licenced, meaning you can also grab a refreshing locally brewed propeller beer with a friend. The staff are all wonderful people, they host great events, and the walls are all beautifully covered by local artists. They're definitely one of my favorite parts of living in the north end. Can't recommend enough.

I absolutely loved the place. A hidden gem! I disckvered the place through the advertisi g of the Friday evening events. The Djs were amazing. I couldn't applaud them enough. The only unpleasant thing was that the owner, with good intention, kept hovering over us all evening which was uncomfortable and sucked the life out of the "party". I think there was a better way to approach the issue and a bunch of us agreed on that. The servee was such a delight and the Djs were awesome! I would strongly encourage anyone to visit the cafe!

Peggy Matheson

Great place for a coffee and light lunch. The staff are friendly, place is clean & free WIFI
