A very nice local place for lunch but inconsistent service. It's usually fine but I was there yesterday around 1pm planning to get soup but they were out. If you're out of soap maybe remove the sign advertising fresh soup outside. Also I ordered a sandwich and sat down for 10 minutes waiting for sandwich to warm. When I came up looking for it they had forgotten to put it on the grill and the staff member who took my order had disappeared somewhere. Another nice staff member saw me waiting and put my sandwich on, but it was such an unnecessary mistake in the first place.

Service was good. I didn't have to wait too long to place and receive my order. My mocha and carrot cake were tasty. Chair and table setup is nice; you can choose to sit somewhere sunny like of the table lined along the window walls, or somewhere relaxing like the couch in the back corner. I did not like that the debit machine asks the customer to give a tip. No. The coffee is already five dollars.

Staff is incredibly rude to customers. Had an incident where I came into the restaurant with my friend to do some studying. My friend purchased a coffee and a snack and I held back and fished up my food from home. I had a waiter come over to me and say "no outside food allowed... this is a restaurant, not a library". She then told us to leave if we didn't like the rules. The staff member proceeded to walk away and continue to yell at my friend and me. To de-escalate the situation packed up my food. As I was packing the owner conveniently arrived and so I decided to bring this issue up with him. The employee stood behind him and spoke over me as I tried to explain the situation to the owner. I explained to the owner the only issue I had was the way the employee spoke to me, I understand from a business perspective why I was asked to put my food away. The owner did not once apologize nor did he take my complaint seriously. He did nothing but defend the employee and told me it was uncomfortable for her to even have to speak to us. I will never be coming back to a place that believes it's okay to speak to people in such a way.

A great place to study with the tables built just the right size to hold two 3 inch binders back to back with ease. The coffee is good as well. My only caveat is how late they are open. I wish they were open later especially being so close to Camuson.

I asked for the breakfast sandwich and it was cold. I had to ask again and again for them to warm it up but when it was finally warm, it was pretty good. The service was pretty kind and welcoming though. Hot apple cider is very sweet so I had to water it down. My experience may just have been bad though because it seemed like a pretty popular place.

Don't let the exterior fool you, this place is a cozy (but not small) nook yet still holds an intimate feel. Big windows provide lots of natural light. It has decent coffee with some local brews on tap for those who are looking for a little variety or to chill out a bit. I'd love to see a wine option. The sandwiches are made with Portofino bread (pretzel buns) and they have a good variety of baked goods if you get snacky. The monstrous breakfast chews (big unsweetened cookie?) are a personal fav. The barista/staff are friendly and refreshingly genuine. The regulars provide a culture of calm and bring an appreciation for literature to reflect the decor of cozy couches, copper tables and study bars. The demographic is split between students and older folks, an interesting dynamic. It can be frustrating when one student decides to take an entire table that could sit four, opposed to using the study bar (with tons of light) when it's busy. However, I think this is a reflection of the person, not the place. It'd be nice to see a notice to be conscious of others when using the space during busy times. There are few places that encourage you to 'settle in' (which may contribute to my point above) but it's a nice change from the more frantic cafés and sets a warmer tone and pace. It's got the 'cross-pollination of ideas' vibe and a great spot for small groups. There are a lot of great cafés in Victoria, but this is one of my favourites. They also have killer green mugs I enjoy :)

The coffee was terrible, I finished only half of it because it was so bad. The A/C is permanently cranked, even in the dead of winter, causing me to leave a few minutes later most of the times I've been. However, the barista was very friendly and quick and that is the only thing stopping me from giving 2 stars.

I was really happy with this place. The place is really big, with lots of seating, although the majority of it gets filled up pretty easy. It's probably because they have really good coffee, and awesome sandwiches at lower prices then a lot of other coffee shops. All of this, plus they're open until 10pm, so it's great to hang out, or study, or if you're just in the mood for a good bite to eat.

Friendly customer service! Very adaptable to dietary intolerance. The atmosphere is cool and calm, and there is always lots of space. Excellent for students because there are so many electrical outlets! Also, I was surprised to see that you could get a beer while you study- a feature that not many coffee shops have. The shop's hours are incredible. I have been a university student for about 6 years, and this coffee shop is by far my favorite.

The Staff were welcoming and approachable. Its hard to find a coffee shop that hasn't been ruined by the fast pace of society. Hillside coffee and Tea has completely succeeded in orchestrating an affordable and quint environment. I look forward to more days perched outside the large windows with tasteful London fogs. Really poor customer service. Went in today to get a matcha latte and asked for coconut milk. The lady helping me was kind and said "yes forsure," I was a quarter way through my matcha and the taste seemed off, I started feeling really sick, my stomach started hurting and I was really hot. I had a feeling that it was regular milk in my matcha. I polietly asked the girl at the counter if she used coconut milk and she said "no I used regular, we dont have coconut milk." I am really lactose intolerant and can't have dairy for health issues and when I approached the manager she didn't apologize for the miscommunication or what happened, all she said was " we dont have coconut milk," and "if your that allergic you should go to a doctor," and continued to roll her eyes at me. She made me another drink and rudely passed it to me without any sort of "sorry that happened." I was not looking to get my money back, I was simply wanting to inform the manager of what just happened because this could have been a lot worse for someone else who is extremely allergic. There was a miscommunciation between me and the staff member when I said coconut milk and thats okay, but whats not okay is being rudely shut down by the manager and being treated like I was making it up.

Overall I come here fairly often. Really like the brownies and oat fudge bars, and they have good espresso based drinks as well. There's a decent patio outside for when the weather is nice, and interestingly they serve beer as well.
