My wedding was on Sept 7th at the Pine & Pond venue in Ponoka. After receiving quite a handful of positive reviews and recommendations, I felt reassured that I picked the right business to cater my small 30 person wedding.
Absolutely everything leading up to my wedding day was perfect. No issues whatsoever and communication was always clear and well-exchanged. As for the execution on the day of, it was unfortunately very unsatisfactory.
Both the owner and assistant were given clear instructions to cut and individually serve my wedding cake. My planner and I stressed that a handful of times and made certain that they were ok with it. They agreed every time we spoke and told us not to worry.
My friend is a custom cake maker and she made my wedding cake. Absolutely gorgeous. When we finished the cake cutting infront of everyone, I instructed the cater to go in the back with my friend so they can start the cutting. My friend told me they refused to have her handle HER OWN cake. And she stood there watching the owner literally destroy my cake infront of her eyes.
Instead of slicing the cake in "wedges" they chopped it up in little bitty pieces and dumped mountains of it in 3 platters, placed it on the dessert table amongst the other dessert squares and packed their things up and left unannounced!
No cake was served to my guests (as promised) and because no one knew the difference between my wedding cake and the other desserts, BARELY anyone had cake. And you know what happened? I ended up with 3 trays full of cake to bring home! I was SOOO excited about my cake because my friend and I designed the inside and the flavor, everyone would have gone bananas over it. It was like nothing you've tasted. The size of the cake was also made specific to the # of guests so there wouldn't be any waste.
I wanted to cry when I saw all the pieces. So much time and money, down the drain.
In addition to that, the owner was a big supporter of "no waste". He instructed us to bring take away trays so they can load up any leftovers from the dinner buffet. We did and they didn't do anything. They packed up and left (there were TONS of food leftover that I paid for and they left with it!)
And lastly, they forgot the tea and coffee. So many of my guests were looking for tea/coffee when we had dessert. We couldn't address this to the caterer at the time because guess what? They were already gone. My planner who was so generous, saved the day by driving 30 mins into town at 9pm and get 2 jugs of coffee from Tim Hortons, only to drive another 30 mins back. Thankfully she saved the night and my guests were well caffeinated in preparation for over an hour drive back to Edmonton in the pitch black.
The food itself was average. Nothing special to rave about. Sadly a bit on the cheaper side. Needless to say overall I was extremely disappointed. Dealing with 7 different vendors that night, they were the only ones who really let me down.
After my experience, I would not recommend Remi's Catering.
