There's so much on the menu I'd like to try, but I can't get past the Montreal smoked meat on rye. Served with cole slaw, a dill pickle and a super generous helping of hand cut fries, it can't be beat... Eventually I'll try something else!

We had the mish mash hash. There was a lack of meat, small cubes mixed in with the hash but you could taste the flavor. It was almost too much flavor as they cook the hash with the grease from the meat, but that's where the deliciousness comes from. It felt like a guilty pleasure. We went right in the morning and were the only ones there when we visited. The service was great and the food came surprisingly quick. Loved the home cooked feel of the food although there was a lack of meat, and it is cash only.

I'm sure the smoked meat is great. Didn't get to try it. When I visited the place it was pretty full... so we waited around as there was a couple waiting ahead of us, but after watching the staff just ignore us and others as we stood by the door, I sat at the bar and the guy working there was very rude.. at one point he told us to move out of his way, and so we left. Great experience /s lol

Wow! The food! We ordered from the breakfast menu, enjoyed every bite, and sat back remarking “that was one of the best breakfasts ever.” The decor is charming old-timey diner, checkered floor, barstools and all. Our server was friendly, knew the menu inside and out, and came around to our table each time with perfect timing. Also, if you’re Jewish or Israeli, you’ll likely be pleased with the menu references and familiarities. Challah, Kugel, Latke, Matzah.

Three stars because although the food is good, the service is really lacking. I'm not sure what it is but twice now my son and I have gone here and received the worst service. While the other diners seemed to be waited on just fine. We on the other hand never got asked how our food was after it was delivered. The food sat in the window while the waiter had a conversation with a man about the fans and I almost had to get up myself to get a refill on my water. Through all of this though, I still tipped 15%, just as a matter of principle. I hope and pray that these actions are not based on my race but it's what my mind is leaning to after the poor second service. I doubt we will ever go back...what a shame!

Update: It's been about 2 years since I've been.. you know... covid. With that said, I was a bit disappointed this time around. I usually get the Smoked meat sandwich. This time, it wasn't as good. The slices were way too thick, although moist. But it felt like I was eating a thick ham sandwich. I also didn't like having to use cash. Petty, perhaps, but post-covid world, debit, credit, touch is the way to go. The bank machine was also out of service. Either way, it might be a while until I go back. Dropped from 5 to 3 stars. Fantastic lunch. I split a Fresser's platter with some smoked and corned meat. It was a great portion for the price. Service was very friendly and prompt. I highly recommend for lunch. I will be going back numerous times.

Visited Hali Deli today for the first time. I asked for the Reuben but with Dijon instead if he suggested menu Russian dressing; the server suggested I try it the way they make it and I may be surprised... well... he was right! The Rueben was amazing! The fries were a little too plentiful and my company’s potato salad looked much better. I’ll opt that way the next time, oh yes... there will be a next time!

This restaurant was featured on some TV show about food. I don't care about that. I like all the delicious calories for minimal $$. And that's what you get. They have what you'd expect from a deli style restaurant. Smoked meat, lox, bagles, eggs etc. It's down right delicious for what it is but not over the top. Everytime I go in I see a diverse crowd in the restaurant (students, families, the old guys, bands passing through town) and it's always full but I never see a line up of more than 2 groups. They have tables and a bar and do takeout. Cash only, but has a bank machine on site which gives you a coupon for your next visit (and you will be back). $12 for a meal and you'll probably have leftovers. This is Cora's without the fruit and lineups.

Amazing spot. Great for lunch and breakfast, it's genuine, simple, good food. It had a great lunch counter vibe. Very deserving of the reputation that this place has, and it's unique in the city. Service was quick, attentive and friendly. It's cash only, on credit cards/debit but they have a machine on site. Plan ahead because it's worth it. Food was great and well priced, especially if you like old-world Eastern European Jewish foods. It reminds me very much of the Jewish family restaurants in Montreal. I recently had the "Loaded" Latkes, and these were definitely the best restaurant potato pankackes I've ever had. Crispy, light, and the extra stuff on top took them from being just a potato pancake to a great meal. Yes, they have smoked meat sandwiches, but seriously give the more old-world stuff a go. It's great, and it almost beats my Baba's (and if you knew anything about Ukrainian Babas, you know this is a dangerous statement).

There food is solid and good, if unspectacular. It's cash only though, and they don't really advertise or promote that. In this age, if you don't accept cards you HAVE to be upfront with that. I almost never carry actual cash on me. I get that will turn some away, but I have that face being obfuscated and not mentioned at any point, then have to way bank fees to use your third party atm.

The ultimate in comfort food. Arrived before the crowds on Saturday morning for breakfast with another adult and child. Waitress was very good and engaged with cusomers. Food arrived hot and the quality and tast was excellent. Had a great discussion with the owner who sat at our table. My 10 year old Grandaughter looked the owner dead in the eye and stated " this is the best French Toast I have ever had" which in return garnished a big Thank you. Took home a serving of mozza ball soup for supper and it is amazing what chicken stock and mozza balls can do to your senses. It was fantastic. By the time we left at 9:15 the place was full.

Ok, this is the real deal for delicatessen eating east of Montreal... Think Ben's, but cozy. Great pickles and coleslaw with a light vinaigrette combined with their delicious sandwiches. Good milk shakes too, and they give you the mixer tin so you can refill your shake glass, but careful on the second pour! the ice cream at the bottom moves fast!

Although the food was good, there are too many downsides. First, bad service because there is only one person doing everything. Not her fault it is slow service, it is just too much work for one person. Secondly, cash only. This was not listed on the door or menu, nor did the waitress let us know before we ordered. Thank heavens my sister had enough cash for all of us. The waitress didn't inform us there was an ATM onsite. I only just read this on other's reviews. Lastly, the sandwich I ordered for takeout was not the one I ordered.

I've become a regular here over the last few years, whether it be for lunch with the same friend, or the odd weekend for breakfast. Consistently delicious and the staff are cool. Tried the corned beef hash (9.99 with pan fried potato, caramelized onions, topped with an egg served with rye or challah). DELICIOUS. The toast was buttery and toasted lightly (perfection for me), the meat fell apart amongst the potato and it just hit that greasy spot I craved. I could only eat about half so took the rest to go, which I nibbled on at home hours later. Also had a chocolate shake which was good, but that is always a mistake for me because I will be full from it even before the food arrives. The other breakfast was their Heli Benny which comes with your choice of meat, so I opted for the smoked turkey. And instead of an English muffin, they are served on the potato latkes. A buttery croissant-like bun is served with it (it probably has a name that I just don't know! lol), so this breakfast was pretty much just as good as the last. Also, I came for lunch twice more with the same friend from the first visit. He loved their any-time-of-day breakfast as well, noting the hash was delicious and only topped by the hash which is sold at the Sydney Casino? LOL I opted for a root beer float this time, which comes with a bottle of Dad's Root Beer and overflowed a bit, but was yummy. The grilled cheese deluxe (9.99 with salami and tomato) was quite gooey but good, and I had to take half home again. One day I tried these Cabbage balls? which were four good-sized meatballs in a sweet tomatoey cabbage sauce, served with semi-dry mashed potatoes and a small dish of sweet sliced carrots. This was satisfying and I had to take a doggie bag again. Both of our favorites though is the smoked turkey sandwich, with tons of thinly sliced meat, crispy lettuce to add a good texture, few slices of red onion? and a dash of sweet honey mustard. I've never used refreshing as a word to describe a sandwich before, but this one almost has a thirst-quenching quality to it with the cold, fresh turkey. Their turkey noodle soup is simple and standard, but hits the spot. Their Hali Dog (quarter pound all beef dog with sauerkraut, caramelized onions, hot pepper relish and melted Swiss 8.99 with side), is delicious as well. My first bite I found it quite spicy from the relish, but as I ate it, I didn't find it spicy at all, but tons of flavor and very filling. First time trying a knish and found it yummy, just a perfect small bite of flavor before a meal. Their Chicken Soup Pot (9.99 large serving of chicken coup, matzah ball, chicken & egg noodles served actually in a pot) was great. One big matzah ball (my first time trying) with huge chunks of meat, some carrots, etc. So simple yet satisfying. And surprisingly, I would have to say their cheesecake is the best in HRM. I thought it would be basic, with caramel sauce, but it was melt in your mouth, not too rich or sweet. Also had it with strawberry one day and that was very good too, but the caramel was better. Friendly, simple service each visit. My only complaint is that it is cash only, and I rarely carry cash, so one time had to use their ATM and was hit with unwanted banking fees. However, they will give you a free knish if you show them the ATM receipt, so you aren't really out that much. Came for breakfast on New Year's Day morning and it was pretty busy so had to sit at the counter, which was fine. Service a bit slower, but I was in no rush. Delicious corned beef hash was as good as last time, so this place is very consistent. Tried a big slice of homemade chocolate cake to go, which I ate pretty much as soon as I got home. Very fresh and satisfying. I look forward to going back here to try more things on the menu for sure, but hard to not get that turkey sandwich.

Love love love this place. It's only a 4 star review because I haven't had much on the menu apart from breakfast. They close at 3 most days and stay open late until 4 on Thursday and Friday so it's tough to find time to try their big plate options. Small place that feels like it's been there for fifty years, very fast service and the food is amazing. Get their latkes instead of hash browns and challah toasted instead of rye, you'll thank me. The motzah ball soup will cure any cold you have, you just need to go to the deli to get it as they have no delivery options.

My favourite little spot in Halifax. Smoked meat is tender add full of flavour. Sliced thick. No gristle. Literally falls apart in your mouth. I had no idea smoked meat paired so well with eggs for breakfast. Also, those eggs were about as good as eggs get. Fluffy, not dry, nor bland. The bread, so good. Light, fluffy, excellent flavour. Staff was friendly, maybe a little overwhelmed by the full house, but we didn't have to wait long for anything. She was on it. Great spot. Excellent food. Fantastic, authentic atmosphere. Nothing phony here.

There are great aspects to this delicatessen, but also several that are difficult to overlook. The grilled cheese sandwich consists of processed cheese on white bread, and the breakfast menu is definitely lacking. Although the smoked meat sandwiches are fantastic and the restaurant has rich history, but I would give this place a pass.

The smoked meat and fries here are amazing and from what I have heard from friends so is everything else. The meat is piled high, nice and warm on nice rye bread, the fries are thick cut and they always remember to give you ketchup and mustard in the bag if you get your order to go.

The food is ok but the last few times I went there I felt rushed to get out (I went to have dinner and a short business meeting) we ended up leaving a pretty good tip and went back the next day and they did the same thing again... we were rushed to leave and yet they took so long to get our food. Was barely there for 1/2 hour and our table of 3 were very well mannered and quiet so it was a mystery to us as to why we were rushed to leave. I ended going back there alone months later to get breakfast and again was rushed to leave as soon as my plate arrived and there were plenty of open tables. The staff are just cold to you once your food arrives. Wanted to leave 1 star but the food is pretty good ...it's just the attitude there that sucks. It's too bad because I really wanted to like the place but I won't be going back.

The majority of the reviews for this deli are good. The poor reviews mainly deal with the service. Went there for lunch...can't comment on the hot open faced brisket sandwich because by the time it was delivered to the table it was cold. Very busy place at lunch time and one waitress can't take and deliver orders in a timely fashion. Even if the food is good but the service terrible I won't be going back or recommending it to anyone.

Food was very good. Wife had and enjoyed the mishmash hash and i had the big breakfast. In many ways as a breakfast place it's a product of a universal truth. It's hard to make a bad breakfast. The meat is the star of the plate and it's delicious. Somehow crispy and lightly burnt while also juicy and tender. My only major knock is that it was roughly $17 a person after taxes. That seems high to me. Cash only w/ an atm in back

A local favorite! The food is delicious and heavy. The atmosphere is homey, and usually quite busy. I was able to get a gluten free meal by taking elements of an order out. There is some definitions of terms the back that help you know what ingredients go into the food. Like I couldn't get the latkes. But yeah, the food and place is fantastic! Highly recommended

I've come here a many times and I haven't been disappointed once. Delicious meals with a cosy atmosphere. My only warning is that the male server seems a bit moody, so you never know if you'll get a snide remark or not that day if you had any questions, lol, I find it funny, but I can see how someone could get turned off by it.
