Please have all your staff take a course on workplace professionalism and how to act in front of customers. Today at 7:30pm your sandwich bar staff (one male and female) could have cared less about the food they were making. And they most definitely did not for once think about the local business they are representing. No proper procedure (weighing the meat) was done which was clear as my wrap has the least amount of meat on a meat wrap you would think it’s a veggie wrap. Hire some people who maybe want to work the job, and not spoiled children who’s parents made them start working. I understand your staff (for the most part), are incompetent teenagers. So maybe do some screening to make sure you don’t hire completely moonfaced kids who don’t understand what it means to represent a business that is customer facing. The rest of your staff are friendly (cashiers). But please do something about your sandwich bar staff, as this will be my final time purchasing any kind of sandwich or wrap from Oak Bay Red Barn. At least until your staff get some proper training. I would be HAPPY to come facilitate a session on workplace professional and “showing up” when you are at work, as it’s clear your staff need it.

Awesome sandwiches! My fiance had an incident there and one of their items was mislabeled. I contacted Red Barn and they got back to me right away, apologizing for the error and compensated my fiance the next day when he went back in. We're frequent customers of Red Barn since their sandwiches are delicious, their bacon is probably the best in the city and they're the only place that we've found that sells single slices of Portofino orange creamsicle!

I've been going to all the Red Barns since early 2000s... first the West Saanich location followed by Metchosin, Vanalman and Maddax Farm. Was pleasantly surprised by the opening of the Oak Bay Ave location as it was a short walk from my house. They have a lot of quick grab items and quality local produce. I really enjoy the As You Like It Chiang Mai Sauce from Union Bay, BC, but its often sold out. RB has good fresh veggies and fruit, and their meats are better than other grocers. I really wish they had kept making their pork sausages in the old casing - I find the new selection is often turkey :( and the casing is plastic/too chewy. The Island Farms ice cream and made to go sandwiches are a family favorite.

Great store overall, but I agree with what a past reviewer said about the employee morale. It's strange, but they seem to really not enjoy working there and usually seem miserable! I've overheard the deli and butcher staff on multiple occasions talking to each other about the high turnaround rate of employees, how no one wants to work for so and so etc. It's too bad, because this store has so much potential!

Go see my man Craig in the Deli, he knows his stuff. It's Red Barn so prices are a bit steep on some items but quality doesn't come cheap. The overall pricing is comparable to Thrifty's. Great staff, great atmosphere, great selection. My wife and I are stoked to have a Red Barn in our neighbourhood.

I was SO excited when they moved in across the road. BUT once I had done the mediocre sandwich bar I found the produce of poor quality compared to other local outlets. Apples in 2018 were deplorable. Now I make my own sandwiches and shop elsewhere. Not as good as I had hoped for. One needs more than great animal flesh and bacon to keep a faithful clientele. But the staff is great!

Just want to put it out there, whatever you get here ... Is going to be awesome. I go there for the wraps and the bacon and eggs amongst other things. But those are my top three. I've seen them run out of bacon twice hahaha. That's how good it is.

The staff are usually great and you can get some seriously good food here. The butcher is also excellent and helpful - they definitely add value to the area. On the sour note - they are getting very expensive. I know it's COVID but prices seem to go up every week. The wraps are good but for ten bucks, they should be awesome.

This is one of my go to's for produce for price and quality. Thier sandwiches are locally renowned for value, taste, and use of natural mostly local ingredients. They do cool promos often like Barn bucks where if you buy a gift card you get more than you paid for loaded onto it. I find I do need to supplement my groceries at other stores to get all the things I buy because I find the prices a bit higher and less options available in boxed, canned, prepacked food, and household supplies (random things you may need and can find at most grocery stores that arent food) but that's not necessarily a bad point just some constructive feedback for possible improvement.

I would find the only things that made me give this one less stars than perfect would be a) The deli/sandwich counter is always a mess, they don't keep up on cleaning it between sandwiches/wraps. b) personally i find the layout of the store a little confusing and every time I've been in there searching for a specific item I've always found it in the least likely place lol. I usually try to do a thorough search before I ask for assistance from the staff but found myself getting frustrated

Red Barn stocks so many great healthy and local products - with beautiful, fresh produce, huge bottles of kombucha for under $10, awesome bulk candies (those little peanut butter cups <3) and other goodies, and OMG, those wraps and sandwiches!! For about $7 you can get a filling, nutritious lunch - try and get the guy with the beard net if he's working, he truly is a sandwich artist. You can also get a card that rewards you with a free wrap every ten you buy! I'm obsessed with their chicken kabobs and other meats. My co-workers go on and on about the bacon. I feel super inspired to cook and come up with new meals after a short walk around the store - and the people at the meat counter have basically taught me how to cook meat, after years of eating veggie. The staff is always helpful and easy going, prices are more than reasonable compared to Thrifty's/Save On/Market on Yates, etc. and the food is so much better!! I could really go on all day... I live in James Bay (but work in Oak Bay), and I still find heading there on my days off. Would recommend to anybody who enjoys great food at a fair price.

The only good thing about this place is the bacon. I only ever hear about the bacon wrapped sausage, bacon stuffed sausage, bacon in sandwiches, bacon. The rest is overpriced and busy. This is a biased review because I hate long lines and paying too much.

Really disappointed in the quality of their sandwiches lately, and the staff they have working the sandwich area. Today the guy took 20 minutes to make 2 bun on the runs, with no one else in line. Put the two tops of the buns together for one, and the two bottoms together for the other, and mixed up the meats on both sandwiches. Something to this extent happens every time I get a sandwich or wrap, will probably be my last visit to red barn.

Was just there tonight to shop for some groceries, had the rudest teller, it was so hard not to get upset with her. She asked if I needed bags and I said ,oh no you only got paper and I forgot to bring my own bags with handles ( I have at least 5 blocks to walk ) . She said very rudely -"A yes or no would be sufficient". I could not believe she just said that to me, Wow and it was how she said it also, very very rude. I said " A definite yes" . She then angrily threw my produce and groceries into one massively over loaded brown paper bag.- , The over loaded brown bag was crazy heavy to walk with, especially how far I was walking. I am in shock how she treated me and I will never go back to Oak Bay Red Barn ever again.

Used to stop here for lunches, get a wrap at the sandwhich bar usually. Went in today before the big lunch rush, had 1 person in front of me and i waited almost 15 mins for one wrap. Covid sure has driven the customer service down. Unless you have 30 minutes to kill before you get your food i would skip on this loctation for the deli.

Red Barn is pleasant enough as a market, and a good fit for Oak Bay in its brand new digs. But it doesn't offer much that differs from what Thrifty Foods offers or the Yates St. Market does; local offerings are slim. But its food generally is more expensive than a full-fledged supermarket. Perhaps the best thing about Red Barn is its full-fledged sandwich bar, which outdoes most other such establishments.

Red barn is a great grocery store and I was yet to have a bad experience, until today. I was in the store around lunch time and lined up to order some lunch meat from the deli, while I was in line I struck up a conversation with an acquaintance while we waited for the other customers to be served. Just as we were finishing our conversation the lady behind the counter (very short bleach blonde hair wearing an orange toque) told us she was ready to take our order, when my friend and I took another 2 seconds to wrap up our conversation the lady raised her voice at us repeating "who is next?" and then scoffed and scowled at us. I realize that it may have been a busy time but there is no need to raise your voice at customers when they are simply finishing a conversation. I would expect better customer service from this establishment

I had the wrap in many different ways and they are all excellent. All the ingredients are always fresh. I loved my wrap every time, but my favourite would have to be with the bacon. The sandwich artists are so amazing and impressive with how they could fit so much in the wraps and still be able to roll it up perfectly. There’s always a line at lunchtime, and it is tricky to get in/out of the parking lot but it’s all worth it. This red barn market has my heart. I’ll be back :)

Easily accessible, and with the full deli offerings of the store out in Saanich - you just can't go wrong. I needed ground coffee and an employee was incredibly helpful in letting me know that she could open the bag and grind up whatever I wanted. Great customer service. Unfortunately, as one would probably expect, it is not cheaply priced. I wouldn't want to do my daily grocery shopping here.

I decided to go check it out. If you are expecting a place with a good selection of affordable produce, go somewhere else. Most of the store consists of deli, meat and grocery items. The tomatoes and bananas were in bad shape as we're the bell peppers. I had to spend a bit of time to buy the 'least bad' vegetables. It wasn't cheap either. The deli and ready serve items might be good I don't know. The produce looks like something they put in there just to be able to say they have it. I guess those don't pay the bills... Parking isn't great either. I would recommend going a few blocks to country grocer.

Went to the sandwich bar around 5:50pm on Sunday, August 9th, with my adult daughter to grab sandwiches for dinner. (We were both masked) With one person in front of me, we each waited on a red circle for our turn. When I was called, I maintained proper social distancing to ensure my safety and that of the lady ahead of me. That’s when all heck broke lose. A third sandwich maker came to assist (a male) and forced my daughter to come between myself and the lady ahead, no longer maintaining 6’ distance Covid protocols. Then a fourth person started making sandwiches and by the time we were finished getting our sandwiches made, we were in a tight group of 6 people waiting for or having sandwiches made. Having just self isolated for 5 months I had a panic attack (internally) and just had to get out of the store. (I have asthma and a heart condition) I’ve shopped a few times at this location for produce and have been happy with Covid protocols. But the sandwich bar needs to be addressed and staff retrained in proper hygiene and safety protocols. The staff member helping make my daughters sandwich touched his face mask at least 10 times, contaminating his gloves, her sandwich and all the food items he touched. Unfortunately, this will have a negative affect on my opinion of the company and I will not return. And I love red barn sandwiches :(

It was fabulous to find a full stocked store, during this period of uncertainty. The staff continue to do an excellent job of staying ahead of the curve, remaining cheerful and helpful. I love shopping here normally, but now the service shines! Red Barn Oak Bay is limiting customers in-store to 12, and it makes for a remarkable shop.

Grocery has unique and yummy fixes for fast dinners at the price you'd expect in a specialty grocery. Not quite the same experience as the West Saanich location but still pretty great. I was very much looking forward to my tuna sandwich as I hadn't eaten most of the day but the sandwich I received could not have disappointed me more. I usually get it from the Esquimalt location and I should've stuck to that choice but I was closer to oak bay. At Esquimalt I usually receive such a generous spread of tuna and toppings that after eating half of it, I put it away because I'd be content after. However at oak bay, I received barely any tuna or guac on my sandwich. I ate the full sandwich and I was still so hungry. I was so disappointed as red barn sandwiches are generally so amazing but today all I received an hour ago was 2 slices of bread, some veggies and the thinnest spread of tuna and guac. It was almost like they were running out of things but instead of informing me that, they decided to not serve me food I paid money for. They even skimped on veggies like come on! I'd give it another go to see maybe the deli attendant was having an off evening but I genuinely don't have money laying around to give it for free only to possibly receive another terrible experience.

Sidney the cashier was great tonight. Super helpful and very attentive. We were looking for beyond burgers, couldn't find them, asked another person who couldn't find them, then asked the cashier and she went and found them. Then we mentioned we weren't able to find Brioche buns and she looked on the shelf, none there, then thought there might be some in the back and went and found Brioche buns for us as well. Two for two!!

This is an awesome little grocery store using fresh locally grown produce. There is a gourmet sandwich counter where they make extraordinary sandwiches. The sandwiches are the real reason to visit this place, I can't stress enough how magnificent they are.

The sandwiches are the best deal in town. Everything else is INSANELY expensive. This has to be the most expensive store in our already expensive city. For example - organic bananas $0.82 at Real Canadian, $1.10 at Save On, and $1.49 at Red Barn. Silk soy beverage usually $3.49 to $4.49 around town - $5.99 at Red Barn. High quality breads, $3.50 to $6.00 around town. $7.99 at Red Barn. For a loaf of bread! 1 pint of specialty non-dairy yogurt - $7.99. Same yogurt at Whole Foods - $4.99. You get the idea. This place in ridiculously expensive and we should not support them while they are fleecing us. I have traveled the world, and this is the most over priced store I have been in, period.

I was unable to shop in the Market as I have an immune compromised person in my home so it is very dangerous right now as he receives chemotherapy.Scot showed up at my door in about 40 minutes with all the items I needed .I wanted to tip him and he responded "No , It is just something I wanted to do." He is the owner of the store. This really was an encouragement in this difficult time. Now I see that they are opening the store to seniors and immune compromised people from 7 am until 8 am daily. These are responsible, ethical and caring people who run a great business.

i really love this store and shop there all the time. great to have a sandwich place nearby, and the ingredients are fresh and delicious, but for real, they need to teach the staff how ro make a sandwich properly. Too often the meat and toppings are placed in separate piles over the bread, so half of my sandwich has meat, theres a column of onions in the middle, and a different column of red peppers covering a mostly separate third of the samdwich. This also makes for extremely sloppy sandies that are very difficult to eat. There's no way I could eat the sandwich i just got in front of another human and not be embarrassed. it was everywhere! when i buy a sandwich, or any prepared food, i feel justified in expecting the person preparing it to know how to do so properly. i shouldnt have to instruct the sandwich maker on how to make a sandwich, and when i do i feel like a jerk. but when i dont i fairly regularly receive a fairly horribly constructed sandwich. Like, when you make a samdwich, imagine you are going to eat the sandwich, and how you might want evenly distributed ingredients/toppings and maybe a 6"-tall sammich is maybe not going to be easy to eat. end rant.

Employment standards BC would have a field day with the owners and managers of this particular store if they knew what was going on behind the scenes. They hire highschool kids who have never worked before and take advantage of their lack of knowledge/rights as an employee in Canada. They dont pay overtime or time and a half, they dont allow time off even if its requested weeks in advance, managers pick favourites & berate the less favoured... oh boy I could go on. Sure, they make great sandwiches and have local product, but they treat their employees like CRAP. I would rather give my money to Wal-mart than the owners of red barn oak bay.

They make pretty good sandwiches for a reasonable price. I was there today, standing at the sign that says "sandwich line starts here" waiting for my turn. Another woman came in, looked at the deli and stood behind someone who was having their sandwich made. When that person was done, the counter woman looked straight at me, 2 meters away, over the head of the other woman and called me up to have my sandwich made. I really appreciated that and will continue to buy my sandwiches there regularly.

It takes forever to get a sandwich or wrap here. Getting a sandwich or wrap takes anywhere from 15 to 30 minutes. Every time you go, you see different people with no experience trying making a sandwich. so many people are behind the sandwich bar and they even see the long line up and no one comes to help. Bought a roast beef sandwich at 11:30 am.I ordered on white bread. The pieces of bread were half the size of a normal piece of bread. The bread was so stale i looked to see if had mold on it. I ended up buying a loaf of fresh bread and put what was left of my sandwich on fresh bread. $9 bucks for that . What a disappointing rip-off.

I am visiting from out of town and went to the Red Barn market to pick up sandwiches with my sister in law and my brother. (My brother has special needs and needs time to process and ask questions) I did not find out until we were leaving the store that the particular server from the sandwich counter who served us was near the end of her shift, which should never be any reason or excuse for the foul behavior she displayed. She was very rude and short with us, impatient if we asked any questions about the process, demanding and demeaning toward my sister in law and brother when addressing us, physically took a pizza menu out of my sister in law's hands and moved it to where she could not look at it. My brother asked for bacon to be added to his sandwich, our choice and we were willing to pay extra for the bacon. Her response was one or the other only. He never got the bacon. She left the sandwich area before we had even been given our order, we had to ask another server to give us our order. That server was polite and respectful while doing so, hence the only star I am giving. My brother felt disrespected, put down and not listened to, my sister in law felt like she had been treated like a child and "slapped", and I am angry. If she is not happy with her job and interacting with everyone who shops at the Market, maybe it is not the job for her.

Really bad. Veg is very often past its prime yet carries a premium price. Discovered bread to be mouldy when I got it home more than once. Started only going for the sandwich bar but the staff is incompetent and the last straw was chipping my tooth on a rock in the veg! Hard pass. Stick to the West Saanich or Vanalman locations.
