REVIEWS OF Whyte Museum of the Canadian Rockies IN Banff

Amazing cultural site

Lance Andersen

Dropped in mainly because it was raining but really glad we did because this provided a very interesting background of the area. Staff extremely friendly and helpful.

Barry McTavish

A good place to learn about Banff and how the park was established, along with a great painting collection of regional inspiration.

Jeff Abbott

So beautiful in a great location

Sam So

It's a little cramped

Julie May

A fairly cheap and interesting way too see a lot history about the area that would have been hard to find otherwise.

Star light Kid

Not really my cup of tea but it there was a board game I played for like 2 hours straight so totally worth the visit

Aurelio Reyes

Amazing local history of Banff and area. Wish I would have visited this place years ago!

Cynthia Olsen

I thought it had a superb mix of multimedia and traditional exhibits. The Library and Photo Archive was tucked away but well worth spending some time going through the many albums.

Harlan Szczurek

Lots of very interesting pieces of history with the added bonus of getting to see two deer right out of the front lobby window.

Prajith Jyothi

Best small local historical and art museum!

Gary Lawson

Informative information

Nathaniel Le Chalifoux

The best and most important Museum dedicated to preserving Mountain Heritage, in the Western Canadian Rocky Mountains in Banff Alberta. Wow. It is the best. And all the archives of mountain photos, art & films +++++ DSAM

Kate Denison

This museum often hosts art exhibits. We were lucky enough to see an exhibit with photographs to represent the history of Alberta. Most features have a video and/or audio component. I truly enjoyed the CP rail, helicopters, animal preservation, local news and comic sections. There were so many more. Strongly recommend going, and if you love museums this is a two to three day exhibit. If you're a bit more of a quick viewer, 2 hours should do it.

Javier Castro

This museum is really good, considering it’s location in a small town. There are lots of galleries and exhibitions to see here. The Whyte family, Banff history, paintings and some contemporary art made by local artists. For a $10 fee, I think it’s worth it. The gallery have been well kept and most of the artifacts, paintings and rare items are nicely preserved. This is a good additional activity in Banff if you’re not into Skiing or hiking. We went on Saturday noon and it was just me and my partner the whole time.

Denise Mahé

Love the Whyte! The CMH Heli and tasteful displays of historic Banff and the national parks is so informative and interesting. Excellent gift shop with fabulous posters and creative items from local artists, great for Christmas and birthday gifts!

Alex Karadimitris

Good exhibit to go to on a foggy day. We spent 60 minutes to see everything. Gives you a good idea of the Rockies history.

Paul Stead

Both the art gallery and the heritage displays were excellent. The "women of the Rockies" display was my favourite. The gift shop had a great book selection.

Trisha

Beautiful paintings by this couple that was united by the Iove for art, depicting the Rockies and their friends. Also a display of historical artifacts from some important residents of Banff in the early 1900's.

Mike Truso

It's a small but beautiful place

MJ Seager

Definitely a worthwhile place to visit. Interesting paintings by the husband and wife who funded the construction of the building. Other artists paintings also for comparisons. Nice museum store with many good selections. Good representations of mountain climbing and heliskiing history.

S.P. Dudley

Looking forward to having this important piece of Banff and Banff National Park reopened. Thanks to the team for the private tour (members) and the insights gained. Can't wait to go back and take a couple of hours to really absorb all the new items and the Catherine Robb Whyte exhibit, MANSIONS TO MOUNTAINS. The main gallery has been renovated and there is more space for the sought after Fireside Chats and other engaging sessions important and fun for the community and visitors alike. Don't miss this important cultural feature of Banff.

J De Santiago

Nice history of Banff national park and the integration of western culture with the first nations people of the area.

Ruth-Anne Marley

Very nice museum, I like the story and people of Canadien Rockies, also flore and faune, particulary information for the Grizzly bear. How you must doing if you meet a big Grizzly... ;)

Walking distance from downtown Banff. Nice exhibit about the history of the region and art Tickets are $10 and they have student discount. No water is allowed inside (I was told to not carry my water bottle) the museum and no water fountain. Bow river trail runs right behind the museum.

Duncan Jarrett

Decent amount of info.

Jason Williams

Great Art and History of the Park and West

leeceve

Cool stuff!

The new exhibition "Unbridled" is definitely worth a visit. The mixed media through the decades was well displayed. The other exhibits at the Whyte Museum are excellent too.

Jared Fedorchuk

Good place to go when visiting Banff. 10 dollars entrance adults and under 12 free entrance. Not too big. But many interesting things to see about the history of the region. Outside for free you can walk around and see some historic houses moved to the museum. Recommended. The bison dump on a frame from 1800's was something to see LOL. And in the way in you may see a couple of regular visitors from the wild. (See pictures)

Jay Gould

awesome. got my local discount, and enjoyed the classy paintings from the group of seven and modern mask exhibit

Craig The FBI

Very interesting guided tours.

Doug Maner

Decent museum

Maxine Kendall

Great if you want to learn about Banff's history. Also has the best souvenir shop in town.

Cristina Arroyo

Nice small museum. Have been going to Banff for 40+ years and was sorry I missed this gem. The tour guide we had was knowledgeable and I loved that it was only a 20 minute tour which left us lots of time to explore on our own.

Abimes Concept

Interesting musuem of landscapes painting reminding me of the group of 7

Kaul YYC

Small museum focusing on western/mountain heritage. Some excellent examples of Western Canadian Art.

M. Jafari

This museum is an absolute treasure.

Jean-Pierre Sergerie

Had a great time at Whyte, lots of pictures of the history of the Rockies and Banff area. Good amount of mountaineering photos and history. A must do for anyone who spends a lot of time hiking and mountain climbing in the area.

Daniel Kocsis

Great museum with lots of unknown facts about the history of Banff.

Arnaud Gauthier

Great

Robert Chernish

This is also a well done museum. The exhibits are very well done. They are informative and offer a lot of information. The art exhibit is small and includes some Japanese art which was interesting to see. Entry fee is reasonable and there are free lockers for your coats and bags. Plan an hour + to see the entire exhibit. Dont miss the recordings as they are really interesting and humorous. On a side street so you have to look for it a block from the river.

Matthew Rafat

Very good displays of Rocky Mountains history and personalities. Excellent museum store with comprehensive book selection of the region.

Jason Chouinard

The history of the mountain parks helps to appreciate the region. The Whyte Museum is a wealth of knowledge.

Wonhyo Lee

I brought my Mother here because they advertise "History of the Rocky Mountains" display. My Mum (93) loves the mtns., & can NAME most individual mtns. from near & far. There advertising does Not say there's Admission $ Fee $, so we were surprised, & Not prepared. They have very good Historical Greeting cards at very reasonable $ cost $.

Sabrina Jalass

A must do

sonal agarwal

The care and thought put into the exhibits is amazing and it's always a joy to walk through

Sanjeev Gaur

Beautiful historic collection

Scott Lawrence

If you're into art, particularly paintings of landscapes and scenery you have to make sure you check this place out. It's also a great place to visit if you want to know some history about Banff and it's people. This particular museum focuses more on the family the museum namesake is named after but after leaving you can still feel it's historical value.

Irene A

It was a decent museum, but it seemed to centre on a couple of rich families, not a general history of the area. The art was nice. Most disappointing was the fact that this museum was not family friendly. Strollers are not allowed, so it was annoying to have to chase a toddler around with very little for him to see or do. Additionally, My 11 and 6 year old were listening to an audio description of a display and there were curse words in the recording. Ridiculous.

Paulo Tavares

Great people

Jesse Martin

Verizon good set of displays of indigenous life and activities from the late 1800s And an extensive collection of art with scenes from the Rockies Well worth 2+ hours.

led zee

Amazing museum that has lots of various wild life both inside and out of the building. Lots of educational value for anyone visiting the mountains for the first time. Gotta make sure to stop here with friends or family when its open to see how many different animals live in the mountains!

The only cool spot in here is the archives.

Zeke News

There was some banging and construction happening somewhere that affected the ambiance. But the exhibits were beautifully laid out, and well lit. Also, best gift shop in the city.

Nancy Piner

I was really surprised by the depth of the experience. It’s a lot of museum packed into not a lot of space. Definitely worth a visit if you’re in Banff for a while, or on a day trip from Calgary.

Lots of good details for those curious to learn.

The Traveller's Trail

Fantastic art gallery in the heart of Banff.

The photography collection was beautiful. The collection was black & white silver gelatin with different scenery across North America and a clear but not exclusive theme on Banff National Park.

DAVID STUART ALEXANDER MACKIE

Small museum, but well presented. Lots of info about the history of the area without being boring. Good gallery and shop too. Excellent value.

Caroline Cunningham

Interesting little museum with lots of history of Banff and the Rockies. I really enjoyed the photos of early explorers who created the hiking trails in the area and built lodges like Skoki. We visited while the bridle display was on which I really enjoyed. A lot of artwork mixed with the history of humans and horses in the area. There is also a lovely walk behind the museum along the river. The gift shop has all kinds of stuff.
