I called to see if they sold a certain meat for a recipe I was cooking. The Older man that answered the phone Simply answered A unenthusiastic“hello “. As though I was bothering him. I had to ask him if this was “The urban butcher” I inquired about the meat that I needed for the recipe and he gruffly said “no we don’t carry it”and hung up the phone. I didn’t get to say okay thanks. Just dial tone. No thanks for calling, No we have many other selections in our store of meats, come check us out. Or no ma’am we don’t carry the meat that you’re looking for but you might want to try (blank)down 17th. If the way he answers the phone is indicative of the service I‘d receive in person, Then I’d I advise you not to go to the Urban Butcher. The only butchering they do, is in their customer service.

Staff are mostly know nothing jerks and meat is only slightly better than the service. Not a bad place to visit if you really want to get ripped off.

Went to the one in mission today and bought 4 chicken breast. When we got home to prep them the smell was so bad. I've never smelt chicken like this before, we usually buy local chicken at the Calgarys farmers market. We will not shop here again, I threw out the $38 worth of chicken wasn't going to take the risk, it was that bad!

We ordered a xmas ham and it was delish!! Not extra salty like those supermarket hams. The wife put a nice cherry/cranberry glaze on it and it turned out awesome!! We will definately order another one next xmas

I used to come here all the time when its called second to none, they used to have the tenderest lamb leg for roasting. But since they change their name. The service gotten bad, went there a few times to look for lamb legs and they dont have it and thy didnt even try to offer us other lamb parts. If u love ur meat u should try bon ton meat market at crowfoot instead.

It's nice to have a butcher in town so on some level, I can't complain. BUT, I'd have to agree with some of the experiences by other customers here who felt that customer service could be improved. Also, they have a lot of frozen food and the selection of non-frozen meats is not great. I find myself searching for other nearby butchers to give them a try instead...

I recall seeing this shop during the summer but didn't stop in until many months later. What a mistake! The place is absolutely spotless and the wares are nicely arranged and presented. The proprietor was friendly and courteous. This will be my go-to for top-quality meat.

If you want top quality meat and a killer spice selection this is where you should go! The staff are always so welcoming and super knowledgeable. Came in for the smoked steaks I saw on their website, and they were as good as they looked! They hand trimmed two gorgeous, thick steaks that grilled up beautifully, topped with some amazing blue cheese butter. So much selection, can't wait to come back and try something else!

Wanted to buy a nice steak for dinner and wanted to know the recommendations from the guy on the counter. He just gave me a cold reply saying "it's all good. What u want." He probably judged me by my looks thinking I dont know anything and would probably not afford the meat. So I said thank u and walked away. A message to the owner.... dont gudge people, they may be able to easily afford good meat and if ur in a bad mood, take a break, chill out and then serve the customer. Dont throw ur attitude on the customer.

While the meats and extras are lovely (I especially like their jerky) the service at this location is dismal. I can go many places for free range / natural meats. Unfortunately, here I was treated very tersely and my questions answered like I'm stupid. No one is going to be as expert as a butcher when it comes to meat, so maybe tone down the incredulity. I wasn't given the courtesy of being shown the cuts before they were wrapped, and the butcher who helped me acted like he couldn't wait for me to leave. (The only customer in the middle of the afternoon, hours before closing.) They have a beautiful selection of sauces / marinades / extras - I wasn't expecting samples but as an easily persuaded shopper, they would definitely help. Hope this location can beef up their service pun intended.

I had been to the Urban Butcher in Mission a few times before. Each time I felt the staff were impatient with my questions but I liked the store so I came back. Just before New Years, my wife and I decided to get our NYE meal from UB. We went in and picked up a various specialty items. My wife had an appointment and waited to check out. She must have been waiting 5 minutes. Finally, I told her to go ahead and I stood at the cash waiting with my credit card literally in my hand. A customer came in and went to the back of the store. He was waited on and was brought to the cash. AND THEN HE WAS CHECKED OUT WHILE I STOOD THERE. I spoke up that I was there first. The staff FINISHED WITH HIM FIRST then checked me out. He said, and I quote, "I thought you were still looking around." I WAS FUMING!! I said, "How am I looking around when I'm standing right here?" He didn't say anything and looked down as he bagged my stuff. I left never to return. I rediscovered Sunterra where the staff are always friendly. We got our tortierre from there instead.

We always use Urban Butcher when we have company or a special occasion and we want to impress our guests. Used Second to None prior to the change as well. Always top notch and the cold smoked steak deserves special mention.

Lot's of good local butchers around, this isn't one. If you like paying extra for common national brands this is your place. Nothing special about this place except the over inflated prices. I especially liked being talked down to by their meat expert. Who didn't know S**T from Shinola. I guess that's what you get when your background is high end dining rather then the beef industry. Just go to sobey's. You'll find the same brands for less.

After considerable discussion with experienced staff at the store, partly because we lived within an stone's throw of them, I found out that they little differ from the somewhat terrible M&M shops! I knew M&M when I sold meat out of a little truck when I was a student in southern Ontario before the company went retail. Now the product is not nearly as good, and suspect that they are tenderizing tough cuts in a pretense of the real thing. Tenderized and pseudo-marinated sirloin or round steak should not be sold as tenderloin, but it seems that they are doing it anyway. I also don't trust the spices and such they are putting into their brand, for it seems jacked up with MSG and other flavour enhancers that are toxic. After buying some of their specialty meats, Urban seems to be copying that trend. I won't be going back ever. No butcher actively cutting meat in the back means that the product isn't to be trusted: any meat can be flash-frozen but if it's not good to start with, there's no way hype can produce the quality of meat many of us want from our 'butcher.' Steer clear of M&M and Urban unless you don't care what you are putting into your body...

If you want the BEST SERVICE & quality come to Mission butcher. I don’t ever. Review but these guys totally deserve the credibility for being local and offering some of the best products in town.

Chicken Wings

We got some striploins today...a couple for the freezer and a couple for the barbecue. The guys happily trimmed the fat THEN weighed them and vacuum packed them for us - no charge! We put a couple on the barbecue tonight and they're brilliant. Very flavourful! Thanks guys. By the way, customer service was great, we browsed for a bit then got politely asked if they could help - top notch!

Went to their Mission location and the guy at the registry couldn’t hide how annoyed he was when I asked 1. If he had the cut I was looking for fresh instead of frozen 2. If it was possible to cut the frozen cut I found in smaller pieces. He couldn’t hear what I was trying to say and his face revealed how annoyed he was at my who know what ?! Accent ? Request ? Not understanding what I was trying to say ? Then he went to explain that the cut I wanted was a vertebrate (duhhhhh) at the end I just dropped the conversation and left my husband deal with his miserable attitude. If it wasn’t because my husband wanted to try this store, I wouldn’t have just left without purchasing anything and going to a different store. Nice cuts and fine spices/oils but the costumer service was so poor I’m never coming back.

Great little shop! I was looking for bison and this is the place to go, they even have fresh sirloin, which is what I was looking for. The butcher suggested I tried the beef tri tip also and I have to say it is one of the most amazing cuts I've ever tried! It is always nice to have a butcher available who can direct you, especially when you want to try something new. I'll be back, thanks!

Locally sourced food sold by local business owner. However that's just 1 reason to go here. The atmosphere is fresh and appealing, clean place to shop for good looking product. The knowledgeable and genuinely friendly staff are engaging and leave you... well not wanting to leave! Worth the trip downtown no better place to buy meat in YYC!

After reading reviews, I was quite worried about the service I was going to receive. Surprisingly, the service was great. Staff were very helpful and friendly and went out of their way to be of service. It was the food I was highly disappointed in. I purchased a $20 frozen Bison meat pie - cooking it smelled absolutely delicious but my family and I were quite disappointed in the taste. Incredibly bland, boring and dry. Don't waste your money - it's nothing special.

I used to go here all the time and always found it expensive but good. I went in on the weekend (willow park) and had the worst service. At the end of it, I walked out without buying anything because of the poor attitude of the workers and not being able to cut a piece of steak that was asked for. Master Meats is where you want to go, way better pricing and better meat. I will never walk through the doors of second to none meats again.

I have shopped at both locations with Urban Butcher for many years and I could not say enough about how much I love it there. The absolute BEST meat I have ever had in my life. Turkey, Chicken, Steak, and my favorite....Prime Rib Roast. They are more than just a butcher shop. They are locally owned with an all Canadian product list. Trust me, you will not eat better. Went to grab some rib eyes. They are very good. At first, I thought the pricing will be very expensive but I was wrong. The pricing in the store was very competitive or cheaper. I thought they would be more expensive than Safeway, but they were not. Much better meat quality. Will definitely go back for sure. Also nice helpful staff.

I happen to think that a meal that includes either a ribeye or prime rib roast is unbeatable! I have gotten to know the Operations Manager of Urban Butcher by ordering directly from him and taking the time to explain what it is that I am looking for. I must say that Bob has done a simply amazing job of delivering one the best products that I have had the good fortune and pleasure of both enjoying and sharing with friends and family. First time here was last week. I have to admit I was a little overwhelmed at first. I usually just shop in the meat section at Safeway. Well never again. Sure you may pay a bit more here than at a grocer but the quality is worth it. I can't wait to go back and get more familiar with the store. Cheers!

So we visited granary road and seen urban butchers so we decided to check it out. They had a ton of frozen foods(yeah I know we should’ve know better) in the freezers and they sounded really good and for the price I actually thought this could be some really good easy meals for the family. We bought the beef lasagna, chicken lasagn and the lobster Mac and cheese. The portions are pretty small so we had to buy 2 of each, the lasagnas were around 15 each and the lobster Mac was just a bit over 20 if I recall right so the prices are pretty high but again I had some high hopes because the store looked good and we paid a premium for frozen foods. We had the lasagnas and they were ok but definitely not worth the price, the lobster Mac and cheese though is why I feel I need to write this. I didn’t bother reading the fine print so maybe it was just lobster flavored and not actual lobster meat because it was bland noodles with a faint cheese flavor, a ton of peppers and zucchini I think and not 1 pc of lobster(at least in mine and my wife’s portions) we had no idea about the kids because they wouldn’t eat it. Hopefully they see this and change things around because it looks like I’m not the only unhappy customer.
