This Butcher Shop corresponds to the category of Charcuterie.
Great food. Especially the scotch eggs and the irish guy behind the counter is great craic!
nice products very helpful staff, will visit again.
AWESOME shop for all your meats and treats! Only place in Calgary I know that sells English bacon. I won't buy Haggis anywhere else!
Frozen haggis was terrible, made me sick, also there is no info on the pack when it was packed and best before date , nothing. Food Inspection needed urgently!
Great family business with exceptional meat pies and haggis.
The service was friendly, but as a British expat I was a little disappointed in the products. The Cornish pasty was not a Cornish Pasty - it tasted OK, but was lacking the real hearty flavour, size and ingredients that you would get in Britain. Meat products, again were OK - but sadly frozen, which kills the texture and some of the flavour. "Freshly Made" on their website is a little misleading, if it is going to go straight in the freezer. Can't fault the hot sausage rolls though.
Delicious meat pies and haggis. Very friendly staff who were happy to provide cooking instructions. I'll definitely be going back.
We had MacEwans famous Haggis for our Robbie Burns afternoon entertainment/ show here at an Independent Community Home for Seniors that I work for. Our residents LOVED the Haggis as did I! If you are looking for good quality Haggis with excellent flavors and top of the line customer service, head over to MacEwans and Gord and his crew will hook you up!
Since Gord took over, there is WAY to much food that is only there, frozen. No heating instructions on the pre-packaged stuff and we were made to feel like idiots when we asked. VERY Poor service, unless Gord, (I think that was the owner's name), is working, he needs to stop hiring his friends. The hours don't work for today's economy. They open late and close early. Cold and unfriendly place. Also, NOT a restaurant...we do enjoy the odd sausage roll, if he has them fresh, that is!
*Update* Sept, 2013 (5/5) Tried a new batch of breakfast sausages. They are now tasty and the meat has been minced more. The size of sausages are now longer and a bit bigger. Very pleased with the recent batch and will continue to enjoy them once again. These are breakfast sausages fit for an English breakfast. --------------------------------------------------------------------------- Aug, 2013 (3/5) I used to love this place when it was owned by the Scottish people. The new owners have the same food but the recipes are changing. The breakfast sausages (chipolatas) have changed. They are more coarse and less tasty. More typical of a Canadian meat sausage. I will try again and update my review if it gets better. The black pudding is the same and I love it. Pies are made well and have good pieces of meat, but are pretty tasteless. Perhaps because they are not using flavor enhancers which is good. Taste like a pie a relative would make. I will go again and try there products to see if the blandness is due to the new owners getting used to the recipes.
What happened to the Scottish meat pies? They used to be second to none but the filling in the ones I bought a couple of weeks ago was extremely soft and mushy. I found the texture most unpleasant and couldn't eat them. Three of them went in the compost. I'm scared to purchase more. If this is the consistency now I'll be shopping elsewhere. I gave them another chance. The original MacEwan's would be disgusted with the filling. This is my personal opinion; the filling of the Scottish meat pies disgusted me; I found it to be slimy; I couldn't cut a pie and hold it without the filing oozing out. I'm only giving it one star because you can't give it less. There;s no way any football club in Scotland would sell these. I'll no longer shop here.
Everything has improved immensely with the new owners. Scotch pies, square slice and sausage rolls are excellent. Friendly staff and can always get my fix of Irn Bru when I’m in. Keep up the good work folks!
Since the new guy took over a big improvement. It is now a pleasure to go shop here. Nial is very sociable you are made to feel welcome. The scotch eggs sausage rolls pork pies proper back bacon sausages pies all a great taste of Britain. For those people who knew the old owner please give the new guy a chance. It's a whole different experience .
I always enjoy my experience here. The haggis and breakfast sausage are my favorite. My wife likes the lamb sausage.
Love this shop! They have the best meat pies and lots of other delicious UK treats.
Every time we go there, I always pick up bangers for myself and some to bring to my parents. They’re delicious! Niall is an awesome, friendly guy, great at his job! I recommend this store to everyone whenever it comes up. Absolutely delicious!
Scot living in Calgary - great taste of home here! The haggis is pretty good. Steak pies, sausages, sausage rolls & white pudding are all bang on! The recent addition of sausage rolls made with square/lorne sausage are fantastic!
Got black/white pudding and berry meat pie. The staff was friendly, I plan on returning in the future.
Always a great experience from a great owner
We bought a pork pie and some scotch pies they were delicious, will definitely be back for some more. So pleased we found this butcher
Great people....great black pudding!
Rude employees and small selection
Best meat pies.....beat Bon Ton hands down
Been buying the pork breakfast sausages from here for 8 years, always stocked the freezer up with them as they were the best! Up until a few months ago when I stopped by and brought 8 packages from the freezer. Tried the first pack and they were awful! The recipe had been changed they never tasted the same and were full of fat and gristle! Thought it might of been a bad pack so tried another and again the same! They even looked different you could see the lumps of fat and gristle in them! I called the store and was told the owner was away but someone would call me back. Didn’t hear. I then emailed to ask why he had changed the recipe as none of my family could eat any of the packs! Never heard back. After shopping here for 8 years I can never go back now! Such a shame why cut back on the quality of the meat and recipe if it worked for so long!
Great meat shop that gives you a small taste of British comfort : ) Just tried a new prototype chicken and creamy mushroom pie....very good : ) Should add it to your freezer stock : )
MacEwans Meat
Bacon is awesome as well as the meat pies! Also ordered a pork belly that was amazing!
Awesome meat pies!!!
My mother bought streaks for my Brother in laws birthday. The steaks were rancid. My mother had the steaks cut in front of her no more then 24 hours before. When she went to return them and get her money back the owner was incredibly rude and blamed it on her fridge. My mother owned and managed restaurants all her life. She knows how to store meat. $60 down the drain. Please get your meat somewhere else so this does not happen to you. This man should be ashamed. He clearly does not know about customer service.
Drove 2 hours to get to this store and am completely disgusted with the products I bought..your scotch pies are the most disgusting things I have ever tried to eat..mushy..no flavour at all and the crust is so hard you will need new teeth afterwards..as for the black pudding its rancid..I have only been in this country 2 years from Scotland and can tell you there is NO CLOVES in black pudding..that is all you can taste.cloves.VERY rude staff..will never set foot in their again..GROSS
This is my favourite food shoppe in Calgary. Hail, king of Scotland!
Always enjoy visiting. Not cheap but they make many British meat products and supply many British made food products. A real gem worth visiting. So I do!
Fantastic - exceptional quality, freshness and great selection of tasty sausages, bacon, pies, pasties, sausage rolls, not to mention fresh meat, and cheeses. Plus a few of those hard to find British items like Bisto gravy granules. Ever since I started shopping there over 5 years ago (three different owners) and buying their sausages, my family won't eat any other kind. I also love the new look and new products that Gord has - its gone from a somewhat dingy shop to a welcoming and interesting store.
This place has really gone downhill, the Scotch pies have shrunk and are tasteless and mushy despite the price hike. I used to buy these for around $3.50 each now they are charging $4.95, absolutely not worth the price. Most of the items in the freezer are not labelled, nor do they have a price on them. Be prepared for a shock when you go to pay, I won't be shopping here again, way too expensive and the quality is sub-par. New ownership is not always a good thing.
The haggis and scotch eggs are absolutely delicious. The egg was cooked perfectly in mine and was not overdone. Really pleased and will definitely be returning!
We tried this place a few months ago, we got scotch pies, square sausage, potato scones, mince pie and black pudding. I was very disappointed, tasteless and very pricey. The price was not on the items so I had to ask the price of everything. Tastes nothing like the food back home in Scotland! I have been told that the shop has changed hands, so I may try it again.
Good selection of scottish fare first class severce
No idea what happened they showed up at 10.30 am then said cash only , then said no sausage rolls or square sausage ? Long drive for nothing
Friendly staff and they've got some of the best haggis this side of Edinburgh
I don't usually write reviews but this needed to be heard. I have been shopping here for awhile now being from Shropshire it tastes of home. Ever since the young Irish guy took over things have really improved. Haggis, Black pudding, Pork Sausages are fantastic but i was in during the week and the Irish guy was serving an elderly gentleman. The old man had gathered all his bits and was than asked "if he was stuck for anything else" and he replyed, "toilet roll" but he didn't want to go to the co-op" the Irish bloke proceeded to explain to him that he had ordered extra things like that in case anyone was stuck. I am very proud to be a customer of a shop that sells great produce and has a genuine concern for its customers and community to help anyone and everyone. Thank you
Went to Macewans on Sept 02 to pick up Striploin Steaks for a Birthday BBQ the next day . I live 5 mins away so took the Steaks home in a cooler and put in the Fridge. 24 hours later took the Steaks to my Daughters for a BBQ opened the packages and the smell was disgusting!!! Had to go buy more Steaks at a grocery store which delayed the Birthday celebrations and was embarrassing for me . Macewans is not open Sun/ Mon so waited until this morning to return the product . Gord the owner was rude and dismissive and would not refund the $60.00 that I had spent on the Steaks and literally just walked away . I have managed and owned my own Restaurants most of my life and certainly know how to store MEAT !!! Customer service is also KEY !! None of that at Macewans !!
I popped into this place after driving by it a few times on Elbow Drive. I got some sausage rolls and they are fantastic (just scarfing them down). I liked the product selection and the service was great. Had a laugh with the chap with the Irish/Welsh accent (ha!). I'll be back soon. Side note regarding some of the negative reviews from the "Karens" of the world giving 1/5 ratings: I think all those issues could have been resolved with a calm conversation. No small business willingly wants to damage its own reputation.
Their haggis is delicious, I eat it just about every day for breakfast. Tried the new haggis recipe with lamb as well and it is the closest I have found to the haggis in Scotland. The new shop owner is really lovely. Highly recommend!
This shop was recommended to me by someone at work and I've become a huge fan. I really enjoy the haggis in particular, and have been in the habit of stopping in regularly. Keep up the good work guys!
Always shop here when I can, had the Black pudding burgers for dinner, excellent, different good.
MacEwans Meats really changed for the better under the new management. Niall is polite, friendly and a true professional in this business. Being a Brit it’s virtually impossible to find anyone in Calgary to make the homemade pies that we took for granted in the UK. MacEwans Meats excel in this department. From the Steak and Ale right through to the Chicken and Mushroom you really won’t have any complaints. This butcher also has a variety of many other home comforts aside from meats and pies. Even his scotch eggs are worth the heartburn lol. He’s mastered those things trust me!!!!! A huge thumbs up from me and keep up the great work Niall. .
As a Scot now living in Calgary i thought id be giving up scottish food. Nope! Great pies. Haggis and black pudding. And good selection of British food. Pure brilliant
Great little shop, always got what we want! Good quality stuff and great banter!
