I was pleasantly surprised to find this little gem.. in a bowling alley, nonetqheless ! Quite unexpected but such an upgrade from the old bowling lanes ! I had just stopped by out of curiosity one afternoon to say hi to an old friend Georgie.
Having worked in F&B for years, I can be notoriously... let's just say "observant", and I've been told, even slightly critical! but not of The Alley. I have taken friends down to experience it because they to needed to see it to beleive it- The transformation is impressive.
More importantly, The Alley staff were very comfortable, and notably genuine. They were knowledgable about the menu and relaxed, which is always telling. (Not many of us enjoy going out only to watch waitstaff run around like harried chickens, or witness them being berated by their superiors- always takes the fun out of it for me, and should not be the focal point of your meal ).
Instead, The attitude of The Alley staff was welcoming and even contagious. I have a real beef when you feel like a burden to staff make you feel like a burden or they overlook you. All too common is waitstaff who don't know their menu, or are too busy to give quality service. That was not the case at The Alley. I couldn't help but notice the comraderie amonst staff and their manager....& this was at change over time, typically a frenetic transition.
The menu was simple but covered it all, there's no need to go overboard and try to outdo other places ( that's just baffling with BS). These guys offered a few things and they did them well! Good quality food, minimalistic atmosphere and extremely clean.... !
I was most taken by the re-use of the one of the old Elm trees from downtown Charlottetown for their bar. Georgie was understandably proud to show me around, and I was quite surprised how the bowling fit with the bar,… They seem like separate entities neither interrupt the other, instead they augment one another, there's no awkward silence, in which the bartender feels obligated to "chat you up"....(phoney and uncomfortable all around). Yet, not unlike a pool hall, or a sports bar there's something else to focus on- Live entertainment ... While you wait for a friend or your meal.
You will find people from all different walks of life having a good time, & perhaps mingling with people they never would have otherwise met. You can't take this place as stuffy or uppity, it is high-class and inclusive.
The Alley has character already, an appreciation for the Arts... a really welcoming / "Cheers-like" feeling.
????????( I wouldn't be surprised if there is a "Norm" there these days )
On another visit a colleague and I were walking home, stopped in to show her, and it was karaoke night! At some places that is cause for an "about-face". Confed. staff were there and not unlike the staff of The Alley, they too were welcoming, not cliquish. Luckily for them, I do not sing, but I appreciate good music, and Wow talk about great entertainment! People of all ages and stages, some travel from the other end of the island to sing and all are given their turn with the mic :-). This was one of the most entertaining and uplifting evenings of the summer..... & all by chance!
And finally.... last but not least : I can't think of another venue/bar in Charlottetown that a woman could walk in to, albeit just to say hi to a friend, and end up staying because she felt comfortable and safe. That, my friends is a rarity in this town.
