Great little barbershop in Downtown Ottawa, just steps outside the market. The bells and whistles in this place make it a comfy escape for gentlemen... Coffee, snacks, drinks, TVs and tunes. Nikita was pleasant and competent, good with a straight blade and ensured I got what I needed!

Cut my Adams apple, went for just a trim and shape. Asked for it to not be trimmed but more shaped up. Went in with a beard, left with a big goatee that wasn't really shaped at all. Literally just cut the sides down really small and left my chin to be chaos and uneven. Thank god I didn't let them touch the hair on my head, I can only imagine. Oh well, everyone gets one chance. Won't be back again, better places to go to imo. I think one star is viable only because they at least offered me a beverage, even if it didn't taste good. Otherwise it'd be zero from me

We love the sports theme - especially all those jerseys - and the combination chic/rustic décor. We've treated ourselves to fair trade coffee and pastries, and can't wait to get back to try out a cappuccino or espresso from the state-of-the-art coffee machine. Not Your Father's Barber is a class act. It's the number one spot for coffee and a haircut in the Byward Market. Well done, Aaron and Whitney!

Go for a stylish cut, otherwise you may as well save a few bucks and go to a traditional barber. Update: Last time we went, barber ignored our explicit request that he NOT shave a line on the top of my son's head (accentuating the part) but he said "Why not?!" and proceeded to do it anyhow! It caused the same problem it did last time. We won't be back.

I accidentally roamed this barber shop by strolling around the city, and I got a great service there, probably the best haircut ever in the US and Canada. The young, 19-year-old hairdresser made a hairstyle just as I wanted, with a lot of attention and skills. He was fun but unobtrusive and, most importantly, it's obvious he likes his job. I want him all the best and a successful career. I will be back to this place when visiting Ottawa again.

Horrible haircut. Literally cut side of my head off. The top of my head is uneven and I have an important meeting tomorrow. I asked for a side fade with scissors and the barber looked at me weirdly and just went ahead and gave me a fade with the trimmer. He did not give me anything close to what I asked for, rather he gave me the exact haircut he had. I asked for matte finish clay and he gave me shiny pomade ( I explicitly said I did not like shiny products). He didn't even show me the back of my head. VERY disappointed and not excited to go to work tomorrow with this haircut.

He's a very meticulous barber, and I'm often impressed by his fading skills and ability to deal with my thick and tangled beard hair. The staff is also very friendly, and the complimentary coffee and individual TVs at each chair are a very nice touch. Very unique vibe overall.

Once it was finished, I asked her 4 times to fix long hair remaining, my beard looks like it was not been trimmed. Plus the back of my head is awful. Never going there again...

Ironically named, since they're obviously referring to guys my age and yet this is precisely the kind of barber my dad used to take me to when I was a kid. Everything old is new again, I guess. Anyway, NYFB is staffed with your usual roster of tattoo-riddled hipster beard farmers. These guys can at least cut hair - and they do it very well. The freshly-made cup of Joe is a nice touch, but you barely have time to drink it before it's your turn in the chair. Everyone there is genuinely friendly - not that weird corporate fake friendly that you get at Apple Stores. Cuts are precise and efficient. Prices are within reason. Decor is Man Cave Chic. They could do a better job on the retail front. (Guys, give Jason at Perma Brands a call.) Otherwise, what's not to love about this place?

So my son and I have a new father / son routine that we have truly bonded over, getting our cuts from Not Your Father's Barber on the Market. We love the atmosphere of the place right down to the hard wood floors, the dog and water bowl, the mini-café with a free drink with every cut, the sports TV at every station and the laid back chairs. Even better is that staff that has taken the time to get to know us and we truly look forward to seeing them on each visit. My son gets his stylin, soccer style cut and chats from Zak who can handle any topic that a 10 year old boy considers happening. My son is one of those boys who spends 15-20 minutes every morning and evening perfecting his hair (and won't leave the house on a bad hair day), so thumbs up to Zak for keeping this customer happy. As for myself, Nikita knows exactly how to keep me looking young, fashionable and sharp (with a little direction from my son ;-), not that she needs it). And as good as the cuts are, the chats are just as good, always a pleasure. And if you think the Market may be a little out of the way for a cut, then you are missing all the opportunities on the Market and near by locations like the National Gallery. We always make a day of it. Highly recommended and my hats off to a great establishment.

Been here many times and the last 3 times I have gone I have been disappointed. I ended up with a McBarber haircut, and they didn't listen to what I wanted and rushed my haircut to serve the next customer. I asked for a fade and to keep the top long, instead I got shaved down to my scalp up to the top of my head (with very uneven lines) and they chopped the length all off the top and have me a very generic haircut (note: I showed many pictures of what I wanted.) Won't be going back lost me as a customer

Hair cut was decent BUT watch out these guys sneak in extra costs like professional theives, at least that what it felt for me. Turned on hair dryer for three seconds even after I said no styling. Unfortunate, however the haircut I received was amateur at best. I showed a photo of what I wanted and literally got the opposite. I will not mention the barber. I tipped $10 because that’s just the way I am. Upon further review when I got home this is perhaps the worst haircut I have ever received. I understand this new style that most men wear but I am quite old school and wanted a simple brush cut. Lines were terrible. Great service. I will not be returning.

the woman who I believe is the receptionist cut my hair but the end result was pretty disappointing. You could tell she was trained but she was just going through the motions. I asked for a skin tight fade and the result ended up looking like paint samples from home depot. I had to keep asking her to shave the beard up to the chin 3 times. I got home and right away my girlfriend notice under proper lighting that she hadn't done a good job.

Needed a last minute haircut while in town for business. I have a simple cut, #1 back and sides, finger length cut on top. The barber used clippers for the entire cut (even after I suggested cutting it in with scissors), didn't blend the back/sides with the top, and left the front of my hair (where there's a cows lick) different lengths, and made no attempt to even it out. I wasn't wearing my glasses so didn't see just how bad it was until I got back to my hotel. Upside? She was polite and friendly. Other barbers at this establishment are likely better and more experienced. Be weary.

Where has this barbershop been all my life? It's a sports themed barbershop, with big screen TV's at every station! Your own 40" TV! And before I even sit down, the owner introduces himself, asks if I want anything, and then makes me an americano...on the house! Apparently you get a free drink with every haircut. Oh, and a haircut is $19. Not $25-$30 like another place I've been in the neighborhood. At this point I'm totally satisfied and I haven't even had my haircut yet. And in case you were wondering, the haircut was fantastic! If you haven't been to this place, you have to check it out!

Unfortunately 0 stars is not an option. My actual hair cut uptop came out fine (minus the worst / most uneven line up I’ve ever gotten). The barber was very kind and did continually make the adjustments I asked for during the haircut without complaining. My real issue is with the fact the barber took a razer straight to my neck without any shaving cream or lotion. Personally, I have no idea how any professional barber would dry shave anybody and my neck is literally BURNING. I asked for shaving cream immediately and the barber did begin using it so the rest of my face is fine and to be fair my beard trim did come out okay. Also, no aftershave or and skin care products were used before or after the shave. This is why I will keep my rating at 1 star, regardless of the kind service, because regardless of how the cut came out I believe that I should never leave a professional barber shop in agonizing burning pain until I get home and apply my own skin care products that only slightly soothe the pain of a dry shave.

Brutal. Was obviously taken in right before a scheduled appointment, which lead to my sitting in the chair for no more than 5 minutes. Didn’t get the cut I asked for, nor the service I would have expected. Do not go there, unless you’ve got an appointment, and even then... be weary!

Couple of things to note: Watched the staff stop cutting hair to answer the phone. Really am I not more important than the person on the phone? Decor was old. TVs are too high to view and were off and the sound I heard for enjoyment was the sound of hair being cut. Oh and not a deal to me, but when you advertise the coffee you should offer it. First time today for my bf - it was great! I waited while he got a haircut and a shave the old fashioned way. The stylist was nice and asked questions before chopping off to make sure it was the style he wanted. The shave was with warm shaving cream and towels and took 10 minutes to do both cut and shave. The place is cute and there is a coffee shop inside, they use Happy Goat roasts. With the cut, you get a free small coffee and it was delicious. It was about $30 (prices can change) and totally worth it!

Good knowledge of products based on hair type, etc. My overall opinion: as a first time customer, I was impressed with the service, and the time in which they completed the service. I would recommend others visit this location, as I will also be returning as required.

I've been coming here for about a year when I moved to the market. A friend recommended it based on the calm atmosphere and friendly staff. I have never had to make an appointment because the most I've ever waited is 15 minutes and they are always quick to offer water, coffee or whatever you want really. I must have tried every barber in the place by now and have always left satisfied. For the price and the total experience you can't go wrong!

Had a shave while waiting for someone else. Have had many "old fashioned shaves so was expecting a certain level of quality from a place that seemed to specialize in this. The attendants fingers went partially up my nose (kinda gross). The razor was a disposable straight razor, not an old fashioned kind; part way thru, he stopped to change blades which made me wonder if he was using an older blade (from someone else) on the first part of my face.... He seemed to have no idea how to do this, could not get me positioned properly and really struggled. Ended up bleeding in several places. Noticed a little while later that there was still stubble under my chin and a few other missing spots. Won't be back.

Great atmosphere to the barber shop although it's a 'cookie cutter' hair cut place. Everyone gets the same style no matter what you describe which isn't always what you wanted. Every time I walked out I had a fade and slicked back hair even though I explicitly said I didn't want that.

When Patrick moved to Not Your Father’s Barber, I moved too. He had taken the time early on to get to know me and now whenever I get a cut we always have a nice little chat about music or movies or sports. (I know nothing about sports, little about movies, and less about music, but he is patient with me and I always learn something in the process.) I watch the rest of the team and they appear to be equally committed. Oh, and did I mention? Patrick knows how to cut hair! Tapered, faded, styled; as much as a military standard cut can be. :)

If I could give zero stars I would. First and last time getting a haircut here, it is by far the worst haircut I've ever had. Usually takes 30-45 min to cut my hair but here it took less than 10 min and was done with no attention to detail. Honestly didn't realize how bad it was until I got home, totally uneven and not what I asked for at all. I can't even style it the cut was botched so bad. I would go back and ask for a touch up but I honestly don't trust anyone there to cut my hair again. If this is the service they give everyone this place won't be open much longer.

For well over 3 years now I've been getting my haircut with Zach once every 3-4 weeks and have yet to be disappointed. Always have good chats about sports, music and life while watching football highlights from the previous week in the NFL. Most of the time I make an appointment but they are also very accommodating with last minute walk ins. Great location and ambience, and always nice to grab a coffee on the way out. All in all a fantastic barbershop, I won't go anywhere else in the city and 10/10 for Zach.

Needed to get a haircut but my regular barber shop was closed in the weekends. I thought I'd give this place a try with the great reviews. Also the price is good. However, the cut didn't turn out so well. At first everything looked good. But once I inspected the haircut more afterwards I noticed that the barber didn't properly trim my sides. There are multiple spots with hair longer than the rest. I would think that you couldn't go wrong with using an electric trimmer. My haircut usually takes half an hour. She did it in 10 minutes. I guess you get what you paid for. I give this place two stars as I'm still able to correct the sides myself. I would not recommend this place .
