A Review of Modern Man Barber Shop
Hassan Hawash
Coming into Modern Man Barber Shop you are most likely to be met with the all so familiar ‘Hello, well where have you been?” from Naseeba, the barbershop manager, but that is the warm greeting you are sure to find from any member of staff. It’s Naseeba who cuts and styles my hair. Her greeting makes me feel as if I am meeting up with an ol’ pal, a friend, an acquaintance you haven’t seen in a long while.
The haircut gives a chance for a catch up as Naseeba proves herself versatile, well able to participate in the give and take, in any direction, the dialogue takes us. Naseeba can hold her own on practically any subject making for lively conversation. Before you know it you’re finished and ready for the ‘would you like to have a look in the mirror’.
As for my meeting up with an old friend, in my case, I’m talking literally as I’ve known Naseeba since she was a little girl. During that time, it was her Dad, the master himself, who cut and styled my hair. You could call him Moe Scissorhands. He was so handy with the tools of the trade. Naseeba learned from the master and does it show! A graduate from the master class it should be said. She knows her craft. For Naseeba, it’s not just a job. Her deft hands can work miracles with her tools. It’s poetry in motion, an art form in the making each time you sit yourself down.
So come one, come all, come on over. Meet your proverbial long lost sister, mother, aunt. Hey, let’s not go as far as grandmother, she’s too youthful yet. Anyway, in her company you feel a sense of familiarity and that is comforting. You’ll have a soft landing in her company. Take a load off your feet in the safety and professionalism of Naseeba’s hands. Before you know it, you’ll be done in a Winnipeg minute or should I say a Modern Man Barber Shop minute.
