I don't know what everyone on here is raving about. My girlfriend and I just moved to the neighbourhood and I figured it was time to find a new barber considering my previous barber is all the way in the west end.
Anyways, after spending some time on Google looking for a spot, I came across Hastings and it appeared to have good reviews and photos of the place looked nice so I decided book an appointment.
My first red flag was during booking — each appointment is 20 minutes long. I found this rather odd as I have never had a haircut in less than 25-30 minutes. My last barber shop (Town Barber; they now have two locations) has 30 minute appointments for comparison. Same was true for my barber shop before that.
I go into the shop and turns out the guy that was to cut my hair was having quick bite. No worries; people need to eat. I take a seat in the waiting area and soon after he asks me to come up.
I take a seat in the barber chair and he's typing away on his phone. I figured it was maybe a quick response so that's fine, but he just kept at it. I sat there for a good few minutes while he continued texting. Once he was done, he didn't even acknowledge that we're now well over 5 minutes into a 20 minute hair appointment.
Nonetheless, I tell him what I'm looking for and he goes to work. Part way into it I notice his techniques is not as consistent as the previous barbers I've gone through, but acknowledging that I'm not a barber I simply let things be and see what happens. I believe there's an unsaid trust you bestow onto your barber to do right by you.
As he's wrapping up, I'm noticing a number of things that don't look good so I brought them up to him so he could fix them, and he tried, but I simply don't think he recognized what was wrong. Realizing I just have to accept this terrible haircut, I just let him clean up (with a machine; he didn't use a blade to clean up the back) and wrap up with the haircut.
The haircut cost $30 cash. This is the same amount I paid at my last barber (Town Barber in the west end) where the appointments were 30 minutes long, you could go to any of the barbers there and get a quality haircut, and they do an amazing job cleaning up with a blade.
At first I wasn't going to post a review because I figured maybe this is how things are in the east end. Perhaps the quality of haircuts isn't as good, but the prices are still the same. So I went to another barber shop (Gents Barbershop) and was completely surprised at the difference in quality.
The haircut I got there was significantly better and surprisingly it was $5 cheaper. Gents is a bit of a walk compared to Hastings, but I would rather get a quality haircut (while saving $5!) than come to this shop where the only thing good about it is how it looks.
