After doing both personal and business banking here, I was time and time again disappointed with the lack of customer service and poor response times. Banks have come a long way in the past 20 years, but as far as overall experience goes, Scotiabank feels like it's in the dark ages.

Staff is condescending, unprofessional and basically inappropriate in their comments. And this is not a one-time incident, it seems to be the norm at this branch - from the upper management to the tellers. There used to be a real fine lady called Daphne that has retired a year ago...too bad, everyone else is just mediocre at best. Don't waste your time here, seriously, I deal with three other banks and a few branches, THIS IS BY FAR THE WORST!

If I could give this location a 0, I would. Went to the bank on my lunch break to deposit US cash. I was approached by a lady who ensured me that the line was moving quite fast, when in fact it had not moved in over 15 minutes. They forgot to unlock my bank account after i brought them my id and signed papers couldnt get it unlocked over the phone had to go in and do it all over again.

Great service at the Branch level, but it's like Fort Knox to get a hold of them by phone - you have to go through a call center to actually get transferred to the bank. Sat on hold forever just to have a simple question answered. If you don't always have time to walk into the branch, it might be a frustrating experience to deal with Scotiabank.

The most horrible bank I've ever been to. If you want anything to be done and done properly, stay away. Better just to change the bank. It took 2 managers and a supervisor to get me a credit card. It's been 6 months and I still don't have it. I had to constantly run after the account manager for her to do her job. She would leave everything undone for over a month and would not communicate with me at all. A month after I signed everything for the credit card, I did not receive any updates from her. After days of chasing her with no answer, I called customer service and discovered that the card wasn't even processed! When I came to the branch, she gracefully ignored me, to which a supervisor said that she'll call me back (ofc she didn't). She later fed me some BS reasons why nothing was processed, asked for more things to send and sign. That took another month of chasing her. Now, when everything is done, and the card was finally sent, I wait 3 weeks to find (again on a customer service call) that she sent the card to the wrong address. The customer service representatives helped me way more than anyone at this branch.

Dont be a day late for a payment or use there chubb insurance they offer. Because chubb is not paying payment on time. They locked my credit card with out warning me. They actually told me that everything was fine as long as chubb made payments . Well that was a lie. Called the 1800 no one could do anything for me. We opened Scotia Bank account and did wire transfer into our new Scotia Bank account from our own country before our trip to Canada. We received confirmation letter as well as guidance letter! It was pretty comfortable and easy “when you arrived Canada, call this number ..., or visit any Scotia Bank near by you to revive your money ..” . Due to the purpose of opening the account was to safe a mount of money before traveling, we didn’t want to carry cash with us ! And it ended up that it took us more than 10 days or more they asked us to go back to back to solve the problem that they deny to let us withdraw all our money ! They said they would give out small amount monthly ! Not all ! . Then it took 3-5 working days for them to find out our type of account. Now we got solution “ you should go back to a Scotia Bank branch that you opened your account for debit card to ask them on this issue & it will depend on that branch ! “ We wonder how many more money Scotia Bank will solve and give all our money back as your document said ? Who is in Scotia Bank in charge for this matter to help us ? Or we have to be sent around like begging for your help ? I came to scotia bank and got a credit card beside my other banking needs. By mistake chose the wrong plan, and the branch was crowded (it is the main Burnaby branch) but Peter Huang helped me to change it really fast although he was super busy. He called Visa and stayed on the line for almost 15 minutes, talked with the agent, explained the situation, cancelled tge wrong plan, setup the plan I needed, and gave me an option of promotion which I took it. Thank you Peter! Scotia bank is lucky to have you! Scotia Bank, thank you for the great experience. You made my day!

Had a STEP payout take more than it should have (timestamped acceptance and payout received by branch June 30 2021 but only processed on our account a week later) so their SB system kicked it back to us as outstanding interest for the extra days the process took. Calls to branch and bank and it's all resolved now, although 2 months and 2 subsequent statements later - so for that reason it's 4 stars instead of 5. Our Advisor, Barb Osborne, and Scotiabank Management were a great help. If you have any problems, give them a chance (or chances) to resolve it, especially during these trying times. Thanks Barb!

They only have 4-5 tellers now. After waiting approximately 15 minutes in line one of the tellers named Rita had the nerve to argue with me and tell me that she's not printing out my statements until there's no one in line then told me to go buy a $40 printer!!! so you sell your house and the lawyer gives you a check for $77,000 which you deposit. Well the bank put a 5 business-day hold on the cheque. I wanted to pay my $25,000 line of credit at that same bank but I can't because my money is on hold. And I owe $3500 to Visa card which I can't - I called up Manager and he says sorry those are the rules. Some rules alright - trying to make more money by putting hold on the lawyer trust cheque. This is terrible recognition of customers. Too bad all accounts will be closed very soon.

Had this bank for a few years now, went in to cash a cheque today and was given such horrible service. They refused to cash it without holding it for a week, as they stated they are unsure of the company. I asked to be given more information. They seemed annoyed, and frustrated with me ( as this is their job right? To help their clients) embarrassed me in front of the line up. He was rude & embarrassing. I asked if this will happen every week when I come in , he replied with " yes it most likely will" . He seemed to be management, was not supportive to the girl trying to help me.I left with issue unresolved, worse customer service I've ever received. Especially from my own bank! Needless to say, I will be closing this account, and go where you feel appreciated, not just when you open your account. Interest Rate is 1/4 inflation, fees will eat all of it unless your high net worth and if you are you definitely shouldn't settle for 1%. If you want liquid funds, carry cash. If you want savings, hide it under your mattress. All of these will have roughly the same return as a 1% interest account, but won't have hundreds annually in fees. Customer service is no better than an online branchless bank, so really just carry cash or use a minimal online bank. The value proposition they offer is just nonexistent

The staff are great, both in-branch and on the phone, but unfortunately they are trapped besides so many nonsensical limitations and lack of communication from above. (The manager at this branch is also awesome, and went out of his way to help me once - contrary to company rules) If the staff were empowered with the tools needed to *actually* address the customer's needs, they would have some hope. Furthermore, the SCENE CARD program is a joke. Good luck getting any help if anything goes wrong. I once had 5000 points (worth 5 free movies) disappear (I have proof & they admitted there was a problem!) and I was sent in circles with each of Scotia, Scene and Cineplex, each blaming the other, until I gave up....but no matter. There's nowhere to use the points anywhere within 100km anyway so it's a pretty useless program. Lastly, therese's no excuse for the limited hours of this branch i today's age -- especially considering the strict policies and the Credit Rating needed just to be able to deposit through the ATM's and get cash immediately. I've was a loyal Scotia customer for over a decade, in two cities, but I almost never felt that my business i worth the company's time. We may not have a million bucks in the bank but my child and I will open accounts (his first) elsewhere (I'm thinkin' RBC: open 6 days/week - better promos - more "empowered" staff - better/easier to track fee structure, as in : no fees for as long as we're active every 90 day, OR have an investment (like the Fat RESP I'll be transferring away from Scotia) ... and therefore you can be rest assured any future additions to out line also will not bank with Scotia, not to mention when word gets our online. Upper Management could benefit from learning about the "lifetime value" of a client and those that the client relates to. I recommend a short but powerful read: "Raving Fans: A Revolutionary Approach to Customer Service" by Kenneth Blanchard. We know you can afford it. Take it out of the $300 in NSF fees I paid last year (...for under $30 of transactions) As I said, I'll miss the front-line staff... but the people upstairs need to do some serious restructuring and prioritization if they'd like to avoid a mass exodus.

I've been having a problem with an account here for months. Phone tag. People at the general customer service number who are sympathetic, but have to refer the problem to someone else to fix. But those people are not reachable. No one available to talk to if I walk in. No one available to talk to at the branch who might actually have the power to do something. Contact info screwed up. I received one of the best and also some of the most disappointing support from this bank/branch. It really depends on the person. I had a couple of reps I dealt with who were awesome. They got promoted one after another. Later, the bank didn't own up to its commitment (something to do with account fees), so I eventually closed my account. I am still dealing with this branch for another service and my recent experience (my newest rep) is very helpful.

After graduating, I need to change my bank account from student account. From internet, I found out this bank has some offer to open debit card with no monthly fee for the first 12 month. I wanted to know more since it is my first time changing bank, so I booked an appointment on a weekday afternoon at this branch trying to see if I could meet with someone in the bank and learn more. I arrived on time for my appointment, waited for the front desk staff to notify the advisor, but then I was told that the advisor is too busy to see me. Then the front desk offered to open the account for me right at the counter...so I told her that I still prefer to talk to someone and receive some advice in person. Also when I made the appointment, I specifically asked for someone that can speak my language since I might not be very familiar with some finance terms in English. So the front desk staff went to talk to the advisor again. And finally I get to see the advisor named Aaron Ho. I wanted to talk to him about my situation, my plan to find a suitable banking package that might work for me. However, right away, this gentleman named Aaron started to say to tell me there is nothing he can help me. blah blah There is no way I can bank with no monthly fee. blah blah I just need to visit the website if I want to no more blah blah. For the whole time, I didn't get to say anything, no mention to receive some help in my native language. But I could get the feeling that he doesn't want me to be there. So I just wasted 30 minutes at this bank and walked out feeling like a fool. Luckily, this is just my first experience with Scotiabank. I do not blame the bank since I am just a new grad with no money to attract their interest. However, this experience would help me and hopefully some of you to tell which bank to avoid when thinking about personal banking options.

Extremely rude customer service agent at the front. I arrived at the branch just before the closing time but the door was already locked. I begged repeatedly to the front customer service agent name Sookie. I had a urgent need to deposit a cheque into a lawyer's trust account to complete a property purchase (must be done today). But she didn't care. Finally after so much begging she let me inside. I said sorry and just had a very urgent banking need and she repeatedly said "it doesn't matter" what the reason is. By far, the most awful experience I have ever faced at a bank. I shared the story with TD and BMO bank reps and they said they would never turn a customer away if they arrived close to closing time. If I have a choice, I am going to avoid going to this branch and Scotiabank in general for that purpose, because they made me feel like a bank robber, like I am not wanted at the branch.

Set up an account to pay bills off and extra money to put up a shop. Money was supposed to be there when I needed it. When it came time to pay and access the pre a proved money it did not work. Went to bank they said oh it's not set up on your card. Went home still did not work. Went back to the bank couple days later samething... Oh it's not linked to your card. Still not able to access my money. Phoned to make an appointment. They said no we can fix this over the phone you actually need a visa card for this line of credit acount we will send you out a visafe in the mail right away. 3 weeks later no visa and still cannot access the line of credit we set up. I needed to get to the bank and they have been closed for days due to the holidays. As I was uncertain if they would be open, I called the branch and the answering machine says Courtenay branch is open from 9;30 to 4 pm today; the website says the branch is open. I drive to the branch on the icy roads to find that the doors are closed and it is locked up. HOW HARD IS IT to update your phone answering system and website to properly reflect your hours. Awful experience, my husband tried to take out a USD Money Draft from his longtime account with Scotia and was accused of drug trafficking. It was only for $110 to pay an application fee and was to be addressed to a USA State Department, in what world could that be for anything other than a government processing fee? The two people 'helping' him were deranged. They demanded a mailing address (not needed, I have since gone to TD to open an account there and no need for a mailing address to make a USD Draft) and refused to help him. We're either going to Alexandria for future in-person help or just completely shutting the accounts and moving them elsewhere with better customer service. This isn't our first I please dealing at this branch, I'm surprised they haven't been reprimanded and replaced by higher Scotiabank management. They're reflecting very poorly on the establishment as a whole.

I've been banking with this branch for almost three years. Bank tellers and other people I've encountered at the branch are friendly and willing to assist. However, I recently opened a trading account with one of their senior advisors and she was a little condescending. I didn't feel comfortable asking questions as she seems a bit aloof which I feel shouldn't be the case especially if you want people's business. She also lacked attention to detail when she forgot to link my existing account to the trading account that I opened so I had to call to have it set up. It may be a good idea to train her how to deal with people before letting her on her own.

We have been dealing with this bank for almost ten years, ever since moving to Burlington and moving our portfolio to the Brant Street branch. For the first two years, we got used to an overall helpful staff and felt at ease dealing with them. Now, it seems that there's a revolving door with continuous change in personnel. As well, I've been put off by some tellers who are either bored or, in a few cases, almost hostile. There's no use complaining to the tellers, since they've been told by management to adhere to the financial institution's policies. The ATM is constantly changing, making it confusing for seniors. Upper management maintains a low profile, leaving it to the tellers to handle complaints. I'm glad that I've kept my Credit Union account. At least I get friendly and efficient service there.

The are all helpful until you open an account, once done they avoid doing service to you (and I usually try to avoid contact and solve by myself through internet banking), they ask to contact the call center and some of services is only made in the branch!! Countless time I went during my work time to solve issues and they simply put a forced smile and redirected me to call center, when is time to sell, they freakily call you non-stop for the iTrade or whatever other products they wanna sell, even being clear that I didn't want to receive any more calls for products offer!! Went in to see an advise about a RRSP. They tell me that they are all not available even though I can see 5 of them alone in their office. And I'd have to wait 4 days to see one. Then ask about ordering checks and they are 1$ each. Lol really. I also had insurance on my cc for job loss and it's funny how everything there is automated and online exempt for the part where you actually want to file a claim where they pay you money. Thus process is all done on paper and you have to mail it in. Terrible customer service. Just interested in ripping of its customers like other big banks. Staff refused to fill in the form required by the province for the Property Tax Deferment Program, for reasons they had trouble articulating. I called the Scotiabank Mortgage Centre to confirm that the branch "should" supply this info - they suggested I file a complaint with Scotiabank if the branch continued to refuse to do this, as they are obliged to do this. I have been a long time customer of Scotia. I have been with this particular Branch for 18yrs. Our longtime financial officer Calla Pruegger has always looked after my wife and I very well. After Calla retired we were under some pressure from friends to move our business to the same bank as them including a new mortgage we were ready for with the purchase of a new home. We initially met with a young Lady(financial officer) by the name of Allison M. Well let me tell you that after our initial visit with Allison, we had definitely decided to stay with Scotia. We did in fact arrange our new mortgage with her/ you. She was very polite and very helpful. I really appreciate the honesty and care she provided us. Allison always makes it a point to greet us when we are in the branch. Very nice feeling! I would not ever hesitate to tell any one of my friends about her service and care for her customers. Cheers! Nicole Henri, mortgage advisor, did not adequately disclose the requirements needed to apply for a mortgage, she misrepresented the personal information required for application, she misrepresented the finance status and what to expect from the bank, she completed three credit checks when two were completely unnecessary thereby lowering credit score, and she attempted to corner us in where we Scotia would be the only option by leading us on, not getting paperwork done until subject removal date, and not returning communications until 4pm on subject removal date. Thankfully, we were working with two others at the same time. I would not recommend her services, and I would recommend that her misrepresentations and business practices be investigated by the bank.

Fix your phone service, I can’t even call a branch directly without having to wait on a national call center line sometimes over 30 minutes, I also tried to call Scotia rewards in another instance and could never get through because everything is routed through 1 number. Having a terrible experience with Scotiabank right now. They were to issue a new debit card with same number on it ( for my convenience ) that was supposed to arrive to my address by mail in 5 days. I assumed they meant business days but it is now over that and I still haven't recieved it. A person doesn't only use their debit card on business days. I have tried calling and no person has responded yet after waiting up to 35 min on hold. I can't even access my account as I need to " refresh " using my card!!! This is exasperating. I am so disappointed in the service. Getting parking anywhere near my bank during banking hours, as it is in center of town, is impossible. So frustrated. Want to spend hours trying to talk to a human being at this branch and have supervisors ignore your messages then this is the bank for you. At the end of my original 2 year mortgage my rate went into a flex plan at 4.99%. I called the bank to speak with the agent. However, she was on holidays so I spoke with the Banks assistant manager. She advised there was no record of me ever signing any paperwork. I drove MY paperwork to the bank and it was then resubmitted. 3 weeks later a third wrong payment was taken from my account. At this time I called the bank back and was told very rudely that the paper was resubmitted again today and was likely a glitch in the system. Had I heard a calm tone, an apology or some ownership to the problem I'd likely continue my mortgage at Scotiabank. However, for the 2nd time (out of my 4 dealings with the bank) I was basically told that "oops, we made a mistake". Accountability is all I was looking for and there certainly seems to be none at Scotiabank.

The worst customer service. Tellers don’t know the answers to the basic questions. I asked about Tax-Free Savings Account and was told that Scotiabank is not giving any interest on money in T-FSA, that my benefit is not paying taxes. He should get a Christmas Bonus from CIBC for “sending” customers there.

Can somebody please explain why a bank would not have any late hours during the week? How are people supposed to get weekday banking done if they work 9-5? There should be a couple days a week that you guys are open til 6 or 8. The only people who can go to the bank 9-5 monday to friday are shift workers and the unemployed. Terrible bank.

Do not use Scotiabank if you dont have to. We were clients for 15 years and went to talk to them about renewing our mortgage but we were close to buying a new home and wanted a mortgage that could roll over. Their were no options and interest rates offered were way higher than competition. So we went to a broker and got a much better rate. We signed documents to prepare to receive a payout and put into a 6 month open just in case. We did electronic signatures which apparently they dont accept even though every other bank does. So we resigned documents and still got in 2 days before the deadline. Scotiabank refused to honor that I put us in a 6 month closed mortgage and in order to get out of that we had a penalty of $1200. Their assistant manager agreed it wasnt right, but the manager refused to concede and stuck us with a $1200 penalty. I will tell every single person I know about this and make sure it doesnt happen to anyone else. Customer loyalty means nothing to them.

They are not trying to service the working class people with their hours arent they. I came 5 times not able to come in, always ask me to come again next time earlier, coz they r "busy". They are also chaging $15 for closing the account not being used at all for the past year, also not willing to reverse the monthly fee for me. The last time I went to scotiabank I had to deal with a rude teller (she was downright hostile). I set up 2 kids accounts (this went well) with a financial advisor. However the financial advisor then sent me over to the rudest teller I have ever dealt with. She was supposed to close 2 savings accounts that I had set up for the kids previously. I previously recieved bad advise from scotiabank who recommended i set up adult savings accounts for the kids money however i couldn't put them in the kids names. The second savings account was opened less then a month before this visit. I recieved new advice later when i had to go to the bank after opening my son's account because I wanted to put it in his name, like I thought my daughter's account already was. That's when they explained about the kids acounts. Anyway when i went to the teller to transfer the kids savings into the new kids accounts and close the savings accounts she acted like it was such hard work and I was asking her to do to much. She charged me $25 in fees. I was so angry i wanted to close all my accounts with Scotiabank right there and then. But i was with my kids and tired after waiting for an hour to get the kids accounts set up. The financial advisor was really nice and it was the only good part of the time i spent at Scotiabank. So i made an appointment to speak with her about renewing my mortgage. However she called to reschedule because she wasn't free. I missed her call but called and emailed suggesting another day; however she emailed me after the suggested day appologizing for missing it. I emailed her again suggesting another day and time. This time I did not hear back. No call and no attempt to reschedule. I am not very impressed with scotiabank right now. There was also another big incident that happened with regards to my son's RESP a few years ago but it's too long of a story to type and it happened at a different branch.
