It's our first time to go to Food Bank Edmonton. I brought my teenage son with me taking the bus in - 40C. We froze outside due to extreme weather, we got lost. Walking for at least 45 minutes just to find the place. When we got there, the staff were very accommodating and acceptance was very heartwarming. We were frozen outside but it was worth visiting the facility to pick-up all the food for me and my son. We are very thankful to have the help even for the food. In times of economic distress and financial difficultly, we are so blessed to have a community like this doing a helping hand to its people. God bless you all.

Utilized the Food Banks services a couple of times a few years ago. You need to phone ahead of time and be "set up". Address, how many in your household, any allergies, etc. They give you a date/ time to go. Usually by the next day. You will need to show ID then have a seat while they prepare your hamper. They will call your name and you take the items out of the box and pack it into the bags YOU brought to carry home. I was in a single person's home but came home with 4 shopping bags. You can't return until a month later. The 1st time I went it was Summer & I got the main! y fresh items but didn't have much nonperishable to get me through to the end of the month. Keep this in mind when talking with them. Obviously, they try and meet any needs you have but are restricted by what people donate. Always friendly and helpful people. Hope this info helps. AFTER COVID-19 UPDATE: Obviously, their practices have changed due to C-19. The big thing is to make sure you know as much as possible BEFORE you go there. If the info isn't at the Food Bank's website you must phone. You won't get anywhere or anything if you just show up. My biggest problem is that I'm handicapped and although eligible, I have only used the Food Bank twice in all these years because you MUST get the food yourself. I was hoping with COVID-19 there is a way for the Food Bank to start making some deliveries now that SO MANY people are isolated, but it just hasn't happened. SO many poor people without food who cannot get food that's available simply because they can't pick it up. What a double tragedy. Maybe someone reading this will be motivated to Volunteer and/or come up with a solution. God bless and stay safe. Sincerely, LL

Just place was a little confusing to find because the address is on a building I went to the address to the door and it was actually a different business in there so he the guy sitting at that address told me to go to my left all the way around the building past the parking lot at the end last door. I had to pass a bingo first and walk all along the whole strip mall to find this one door going inside wrapping all the way around and see if a room is quite confusing to get to you but I found it and I have absolutely nothing bad to say because this organization helps people in need as like myself I needed a little bit of help and got it from here this month I cannot complain. Just a little confusing with the address. I found it but I'm not sure how others would find it because my friend was meeting me there and he couldn't find where I was I had to find him outside go all the way back around to the address on the door because explaining it to him on phone he can find it from the parking lot. Oh well great place. Very nice lady that helps me and God bless this place and this organization. Thank you

I called yesterday for help because my fiance was just let go from his job and his last pay cheque is going to cover next months rent while I am able to cover the utilities. The intake woman I spoke to was courteous and helpful and at the end of our conversation asked if I wanted a request for a birthday cake for my daughter (her birthday is next week). In all this stress and constant worry I had forgotten the mere idea of even getting a birthday cake for my own child and I broke down, crying like a fool and apologizing to your worker. I wish I could remember her name, it was around 9am and I spoke to her for help for a family of 4. I just wanted to thank you all so much for everything you do for this community and in the last week and a half I have felt humbled and truly grateful for kindhearted people like yourselves who work so hard to help those like us who need a helping hand when times get rough. Went there and only got green pepper, potatoes as big as an egg times five, dead lettuce and a sandwich bag of r8ce, we were expecting dried and canned goods but got no canned anything and no pasta, expected to live on old veggies, not even a loaf of bread and nothing to cook with the veggies they gave us. Worse place ever to receive food, my cupboards are still empty, waited 2 weeks to contact them and thats what we get, might as well go and steal food at least i can eat. They probanly take the pasta and food home for themselves

I have utilized this food bank a few times. No judgement, times get tough. This food bank is welcoming and very courteous, it's encouraged that people call in a week before food is needed but sometimes it is not anticipated. Lots of veggies and wheat, a bit of sugar or treats included if the have. Service is usually quick but anticipate a bit of wait time.

My spouse and I have used the Edmonton Food Bank on many occasions (especially two years ago during the recession) as well as once before since we moved from Mill Woods to the Pleasantview neighborhood in Allendale. I was to go to the Holy Spirit church on 11223-51st Avenue, and the church volunteers there I found were very friendly and helpful. There is a phone nearby on the wall that you can use to call for a cab home, as I don't have a working cell phone (can't afford just yet to have it topped up with funds). If there are food items that you don't want or use, there is a table nearby that you can take the items to and someone else can use them. To the people inquiring why they have been given expired or spoiled food, that has NEVER been the case with us. You are given things that we really appreciate such as a carton of eggs, two small jugs of strawberry milk (one of which did go bad, but it was several days that we had it in the fridge), and other items like this large Christmas poinsettia decorated metal tin that was full of Kirkland European cookies with milk, dark, and white chocolate! We're still eating them, and they're good! That was a very nice surprise to receive in our hamper. I intend on keeping the tin too that they came in to use for storing baking, as it's too nice to throw out. We also received 4 bars of hazelnut chocolate bars as well! And still eating those. You would be surprised as to what food items you receive from them. The Edmonton Food Bank has been a real blessing to us when we needed food items. The negative comments on here that I see really surprise and almost anger me. Please be gracious and thankful that we have such a generous, very much needed charity that provides food to Edmontonians. If we DIDN'T have them, where would we all be without these generous volunteers who dedicate their time and energy to supply those in need with food items??! I even twice donated money to them last year during the Christmas holidays, because I was thankful to them for the year prior when we really needed their help. The man who emailed me back was super thankful. : )

This was my first time receiving a food hamper from a food bank, and I had people warn me that I would receive subpar food, but something inside me told me that my experience would be great, and it was. I received potatoes, zucchini, small eggs and a big box of frozen chicken thighs for my fresh foods and a whole bunch of non expired canned goods, plus hazelnut filled doughnuts from Costco and a big bag of breads. I am a single living woman, and I don't eat a lot of bread to begin with, so I gave most of the bread to my sister and her family. I was surprised to even received toilet paper, toiletries and spices, along with little packets of parmesan cheese. A big surprise was a whole bottle of premium apple cider vinegar. I also never buy cream cheese, and this came with Philadelphia Whipped Berry cream cheese. Omg, so good. When I went to pick up my food, it was easy to do, and I felt badly for the staff bc they had a person picking up their food who was irritated and being very mean to the staff for not giving him a vegan box, that he had never specified. Then in the parking lot next to us, a lady and her man got into an altercation where he busted her phone on the pavement, and the security had to go help her. I just want to thank the staff for putting together a well thought out hamper. Also, if you have a pet, let them know! They gave me kitty kibble and canned cat food.

What can I say? The experience was one that shows there is compassion in so many people who give to those who are struggling. Huge warehouse with friendly staff and extremely generous to organizations who provide meals and hampers to the less fortunate. If you are struggling and need some help with food for you or family this organization has the help you may need. If you don't need there help you can donate at most groceries stores or directly to the food bank with cash or food donations. ????

I tried to set up an appointment, for a single father of 2 who haven't been able to get through all week. I didn't realize that this wasn't allowed. so, i would like to inform you, that i know many working men who collect health cards and have a good reputation with your services, they get 6 or more cards to go into your service...they get alot of extra food_like meat for example which children don't receive. they work in fort macmurrey and landscape in the city during the season. you cannot even catch the cheaters, let alone feed growing children I donated 50$ this year, to repay what little help you give to single families, i guess that doesn't seem like much when you already have so many donations. just know that we are trying the best we can for the school children. I don't help capable adults...I care so much about the kids in this provide. thank-you for this able to speak for them.

I see no irony in complaints coming from "iPhones". I'm using a Samsung which I got from Koodo for $0 down and pay $50 a month to use. An extra 50 bones a month isn't going to get you and your family a lot of food. I also hope people realize that when you fall on hard times, the things you acquired during your not so hard times don't just vanish in a poof of smoke. People don't deserve to starve just because they are not chronically poor. And, by the way, you can also use a library computer for free. That being said, I really hope these people are exaggerating, because if they aren't that's pretty not cool.

Having to be made feel degraded and less than human is tough enough when you are disabled, and one expects that volunteers who work at these food banks will treat you like a human being, but I found out the hard way, that this isn't the case and you are treated like the bug under your foot just waiting to be stepped on. The people are terribly rude, inconsiderate, look down on you like they are any better than you are and have no empathy for those who are in desperate need. If it wasn't for the fact that I either eat or I starve, I would never step foot into this place. I have had a very bad streak of bad luck in the last 3 years where I've lost my family, my health and all of my money and on top of the grief and sorrow I go through on a daily basis, one would think that these volunteers would at least try to be pleasant because it would go a log way into making someone's day. Instead you are treated like cattle. I know they cannot control who donates and what they will have on any given day, there is still such a thing as common courtesy,. I have been to the one In Sherwood Park when I lived there, and they could take lessons from the people there because they understand that many of the people who use food banks have very difficult lives as it is and actually treat you like you are a human being. I will be moving back to Sherwood Park, specifically because I am extremely upset at how they treat the most underprivileged, in the city of Edmonton. I have watched to see how they treat others and cannot believe nothing has been done about this. A woman with 2 small children came in 5 minutes prior to closing time, crying about how her taxi was involved In a minor accident, and had no choice but to wait for the police. She handed them some sort of proof of the accident, and they refused to budge, by allowing her an extra 5 minutes so she could pick up, obviously, very much needed food for her children. She was crying and begging, and as a former nurse, I know she was not some junkie, but was left by her husband and is now stuck in this terrible cycle of poverty. She is in a wheel chair, towing 2 children along , both under the age of 6, and these people couldn't care less, and on top of that, they suspended her from using the food bank for 3 months through no fault of her own. I spoke to her outside a bit after my degrading incident, only to find out that this cab fair to the food bank and back was all the money she had left and was counting on the foodbank to hold her over until her next check the following week. I was horrified that they could treat someone like this and I ended up giving her a ride and half of my items, even though I couldn't afford to do so, but I figure that I could go without food for a week and her children couldn't. Shame on you people!!!

Disappointing experience with the food bank today. Called to see if I could get some food, as I do not have any money left until my next payday. The woman was kind, but said the soonest she could get me a basket wasn't until the 28th of October, about 7 days from now. I'm not sure what I am going to do until then. Perhaps it is because I don't have a family or any children, but I left feeling as though I was not a priority to help. I have given to the food bank, and will continue to. But I was disappointed that the first time I've had to reach out for help, that the help isn't available.

I spoke to some woman there today and told her why I needed food. She asked me for all my ID, etc. Then when I told her I couldnt pick it up as I have COPD and no money for bus and am not able to walk that far to the bus stop. She said to me ""so why are you calling me then?""" I have never been so embarassed in my life. I told her that the woman upstairs in this apartment block gets her food hamper delivered and your worker said to me ""oh she must have a worker,,they wont deliver to you..you are at the other end of the world for them"" Is this how you train all your volunteers to treat people? I sure hope not

After donating for more than 30 years, I found myself in need of help last week. I talked to a very nice and helpful young lady on the phone. I told her I still had a few cans of can goods, and had lots of meat, but had not had fresh products in almost 5 months. She told me that perishables were had to come by but she would see what she could do. She set up a pickup time at the 120 St warehouse. I went on that day, and was warmly greeted and sent directly to a table where a box of food had just been put up for me. Between the two parts of the agency I almost fainted when I looked in my box. It was full of fresh veggies, milk and other dairy products, bread and buns, even some mandarin oranges. I almost cried right there. I cannot explain how good I felt, even though I really regretted having to use this service at all. EVERY person I spoke to at the pick up spot was smiling and friendly. What a wonderful bunch of people.

This is a worthy charity with hard-working volunteers. I hope the readers recognize the irony of the negative reviews, which were made with access to a computer or $$ mobile phone. While some points are worth attention and food quality should be checked, the entitled attitude and negativity are unnecessary. I came here to read reviews before making a decision to support. While I'm convinced about the quality of charity, I'm left wondering whether these kinds of entitled people are who I want to help. I will assume the majority of people who use this service (especially those who cannot afford a computer or $$ iPhone) do appreciate the service, especially in this season of giving and thankfulness.

I love the food bank and the volunteers. My experience that day was less than cordial. After answering covid questions and passing security the worker berated me for being there. I applied on line and was told to call, every time I called I was told my local depot had no openings and to call back. This had happened several months in a row. Online and phone wasn't working out. I felt I had no other options. No reason to publicly berate someone. Being there asking for food is hard enough. ****EDIT**** After this review the Food Bank did reach out to me.

Thoroughly disappointing place to work. I spent a year working here and met some amazing people. I also quickly realized that staff turn over is at an alarming rate. Management is completely disconnected from staff. Less then a month ago I had a good review, complete with raise and bonus. This month I have been terminated, receiving notice 5 days after being quarantined due to covid testing. I raised many concerns that management chooses to ignore. We can each have our side to a story but the turn over speaks volumes.

They don't pay much attention to the needs of the individual. My son was given 36 buns, 2 loaves of bread, 1small loaf of bread and 6 bagels. He was also given 6 chocolate chip muffins which were past due by a full week and gave him diarrhea. Pitiful! In the past, I was given Cheez Whiz that was 6 months past due and had actually turned brown. Really? Are you color blind? Was also given a can of stew sold from a Bi-Way store that has closed down 2years prior. The can had no expiry date. Scary! They obviously have no health inspectors working.

Got the help I requested when my own refrigerator stopped working and I had to throw away everything in it. The problem I did have was about 1/3 of what I received I regret I had to throw away due to it either bring damaged by what appeared to be mice chewing into it or the foods were expired by a week or in some cases a year. Closer attention needs to be taken more seriously. One day someone could end up very I'll from mistakes like this. I'm glad I paid attention to the dates and didn't get sick. Will everyone be so lucky?
