REVIEWS OF Blackbird Baking Co. IN Toronto

Mimi W

I do wish their selection was a little bigger, especially in terms of the sweets, but their baked goods are really top notch: fantastic taste and texture that's a bit of a surprise given how simple and unpretentious everything looks. - Mimi's Cake Tour

Hooper West (JTB)

The Baker at Blackbird is a Virtuoso! Some of the very best bread you will ever break come from Blackbird's Ovens.

Mainak Mondal

Awesome bakery serving croissants, tarts, baguettes and the list goes on. Always served with a smile and I was offered suggestions on pairing bread with the main course. Kinda on the expensive side, but we'll worth it.

Elizabeth Aqui-Seto

I can't seem to get enough of the sourdough breads, chocolate corks and of course the Canelé de Bordeaux. Toronto is so badly in need of a really good bakery and I'm thrilled to have discovered Blackbird. And did I forget the excellent service, ALWAYS? Amazing friendly, efficient staff who really seem to care and love their jobs. Order in advance to avoid disappointment. Definitely a well managed business and owners.

Pinn SkyTV

Love it. Such a cool and cozy spot on trendy Ossi strip

Masih Pooya

Four starts cause their sandwiches are way overpriced for their quality. Other baked goods are fair and worth it but I don’t recommend purchasing a $12 Mortadella Sandwich that’s just got lettuce and cheese while kinda small. Ensure you try challah bread, it’s like going back to Israel. Try making French toast and you’re golden! Haha

Linda

Favourite bakery spot DT! I visit here regularly for the seeded bread and pasties! I used to visit the Riverside location but now live closer to the Kensington location. The shop is smaller but they're stocked quite well even in the afternoon. They usually have a line outside as it’s limited to 3 customer in the store but the line moves quite fast!

Joy Richards

Their caneles de Bordeaux are better than the ones in Bordeaux. Their lemon tarts are without comparison in Toronto. Betterering all the French patisseries in the city. I’ve tried them all.

Glenn Dickler

Looks good unfortunately it was close. Going back definitely to check it out.

Michele Cryan

Rarely eat bread due to dietary reasons but when I do it has to be from Blackbird Baking co. The BEST! I usually buy it from Bespoke Butchers in Liberty Village!

Oliver Hierlihy

Easily the best bakery in the City, can't wait for their new Kensington Storefront to open!

Tram Ngo

Loved the multigrain sourdough baguette! Very similar to the ones that we tried in San Francisco. Crispy on the outside and chewy on the inside. We were there closer to closing so they did not have that much selection but will definitely return for more.

Chris Lai

Butter croissant that's crispy on the outside and soft in the in Lemon tart with a brulé top? Never knew I need it

Karen Lam

Bread is over-baked which manifests with virtually burnt crust, and difficulty cutting at home. Even worse is that the burnt bread is expensive. I thought it was a one-off but I poked my head in on other occasions and seen the same. I would never buy again. Walk a few minutes to Caldense bakery and get some proper, non-burnt bread for much cheaper.

Lolly Luck

Incredible bakery with delicious, memorable breads and pastries. All the croissants and danishes are impeccable.

Quan & Alina

A small location but their food is delicious! It's a little more on the expensive side but definitely worth it if you want to treat yourself.

Alina Franchi

Two words - sourdough bread . It's just amazing. Get there earlier than later as towards the end of the day you may be stuck with seeded or whole grain sourdough , which is still good but the plain white sourdough cannot be compared . It's good enough for me to just eat the whole loaf by itself in a day . It's honestly too good to use it for a sandwich ! They also have really yummy tea and good coffee ????. I make sure to get something from here every time I'm in Kensington

Karen Jungjohann

Absolutely wonderful pastries, breads, and more!

Mallesh Pai

Excellent bakery with lots of bread and some sandwich options. There can be a bit of a line on some occasions ( weekend mornings) but quite worth it. Got the Spanish omelette sandwich, was very very good.

Bo Shiun

Prices tend to be on the higher end, but their pre-made sandwiches are really good (though far from being the best sandwiches I've had). Love paying Blackbird Baking a visit whenever I visit Kensington.

Mary Ann Baynes

Tried the sourdough multigrain baguette. Crunchy crust and soft inside. Served with a good Brie from global cheese shop. Perfection.

Colin Gillies

I think it's the best bread in Toronto but you can judge for yourself. The whole grain baguette is perfect. Crunchy crust and chewy bread. Great lookin too.

Brian

Well, it’s not very often you can actually feel the “pride” from an establishment, but you can really sense the dedication to the craft at this bakery. This staff are well mannered as well. Kudos.

SenseiOfSnark

WHYYYYYY! Why has it taken me so long to get to this place...sheesh. Note: You pay for what you get and yes, it's a tad pricey. Little shop in Kensington Market enabling the bread lovers in all of us to indulge...and indulge I did. From the Sourdough/black olive bread to the almond/cinnamon croissant to the mouthwatering and rich cheddar/jalapeno marvels. Already planning my next trip.

toe knee

Outstanding fresh sour dough bread... Mouthwatering.. Crusty on the outside soft on the inside!

Fabiola Cruz

Some of their pastries are really good, others not so much.

Guy Le Ny

I have been meaning to write this review for a while. Customer service is not that great. Every time you ask for a receipts it’s l attitude happening and no thank you. Really not that friendly. Additionally they always ran out of the Kensington sourdoughs bread way before the store closes. They should definitely work on their inventory. The demand is there because they have line ups surprisingly. But I have been burn to many times with that place so I won’t comeback unless I really need too. I am in Kensington often there is only a couple of place I won’t go and now you are one of them. Very disappointing.

Barton BootherBing

Damn good baked goods

Evelyn Sham

Fast service despite the queue. I got the White Sourdough bread and it was amazing!

Gary Bettman

Great tasting sourdough and wonderful service!

Tatiana Kiseleva

It's amazing bread! My favorite is Sesame Spelt Sourdough!

Blayne Amir Sayed

Best bakery in this area. Multigrains and sourdoughs are excellent, as is the olive loaf. Baguettes are can't miss item.

Katie Wallace

Great prices and great food. The croissant sandwiches are my favourite

Shawn N

Great family and amazing bakery , love this place .❤️

Stephanie’s Kitchen

Best lemon tarts in the city !!! Every time I’m in the neighbourhood black bird is a must ! 10/10 highly recommended

Alisa Vorobyeva

Amazing experience! Very delicious and healthy granola . High quality pastries

PYJ L

I like their bread and their pastries. But I really find one of the guys there very rude and unfriendly so I try to go whenever he isn't there. He is a tall, brunette and is always frowning and never says anything nice. I once saw him suggest an old women to buy something, she said no and then commented on how she loves their bread, to this he just frowned and didn't say anything back. After seeing this guy do such thing a few times, I just don't bother going back when he's around. The baguette they make is good, and so are their other bread but pastry is a hit or miss. (esp. kouign amann is way too sweet and too drippy)

Damien Goblot

Best bread and pumpkin pie I have ever had. This is some truly impressive baking skills. Can't wait to go again

Ruth McArthur

I love this bakery. After exploring various sourdough varieties in the city, I feel that Blackbirds Kensington loaf is the best around. Their baguettes and baked goods are also amazing. The staff are all quite diligent on ensuring the number of patrons inside remain at 3 and they all are wearing masks and remain behind the plexiglass.

Annie

Love this place! The almond croissant and lemon tart were so damn good!! The staff here are also very friendly!

Julie Beaugrand

The best bread I've found in toronto so far, hands down. And I'm a picky French person :) The kouign aman are excellent

Steve Maxwell

Specializing in sourdough breads this place is great. Really good baguettes and my favorite is the seeded sourdough.

Karim Balbaa

Can I rate your sourdough a 10 out of 5 please....... How is it possible that your sourdough tastes so good. I've had lots of sourdough bread over the years your recipe is by far the best!!!!

Brendan Church

Almond croissants and bread are simply divine.

Leanne S

Oh I am so enjoying this bakery. The sourdough that I bought today was so yummy, and the ginger honey scone was delicious. I can't wait to buy and try more!

Ray Du

One of the best bakery in town. Definitely on my top 5 spot.

Axis Gear

Wow, just wow. If real estate agents wanted to sell houses faster they should bottle the delicious smells from Blackbird. Worth the drive! Perfect crust, texture and taste. Keep it up Blackbird folks!

Maryam Tohidi

Omg. Everything is good!!

Massooma Pirbhai

Was looking for something sweet to eat and the smell of Blackbird brought me there. I ordered the Pain aux raisins and the almond croissant. Now I think I might be addicted. It was flaky and buttery but not too sweet. Just perfect. Going to have to go there again and try their other baked goods.

Sam

i always go for a sourdough and a danish! the bread loads might be a little bit too crispy for some but i b like the way they are

Kaidi Liu

One of the best whole wheat sourdough you can find in the city! The seeded and Baldwin brown loaves are fantastic.

Fred Spivock

Awesome bread made with levain, lightly sour bread with a dark rich crust. The best canelé I've ever eaten.

DRL Instagrammatika

Super duper best bread ever!

EJ Lee

The chocolate almond croissant had no business being this excellent. I’ve tried many patisseries, some of the most famous ones in Paris, France, and Blackbird makes some of the best croissants. Unbelievable.

Chelsey Rooney

Love their bread, they also have great pastries!

Andy Ng

Hands down one of the best bakeries in the Toronto metropolitan. Breads are of the European country style known for its dark mahogany crust and soft white crumb. The bakery also sells smaller items including croissants, tarts, scones, and focaccia style pizzas. Check out the merchandise and pick up a pin!

Trieu Thu

Grab a croissant and sourdough. Fantastic bakery with friendly service

Diana Mancuso

Fresh bread and baked goods in the middle of Kensington. The chocolate corks are a real treat.

Luke White

I mean the reputation of this place speaks for itself. There really isn’t much I can add. I’ve been getting all my bready needs from these guys since I discovered them a few years ago. Love em They absolutely nail the loafs and baguettes, but the buns etc are also delicious if that’s your thing !

Halli Berry

Amazing product. From tarts, bread, French pastry. They really know how to make a good treat.

Nikhil Bhatia

Love the breads here.

Jay

Another great shop that is tucked into the hustle and bustle of Kensington Market. This one brings artisan bread that is baked on site, a selection of pastries, a few choice sandwich made with that hand-crafted bread, and other accoutrement for bread. We had two objectives coming here today: 1. Select a delicious bread to pair with the chilli that was going to be slowing cooking away home. 2. Try one of their delicious daily made sandwiches that uses their bread. We ended up with a sourdough baguette that had a very crispy crust while the crumb was soft and chewy. It definitely possessed that sourdough quality in crust and crumb too. Eventually I settled for the salami sandwich that had a lot of slices of salami, gruyere cheese, spicy grainy mustard, and slightly tart pickles between two slices of poppy seed baguette. Simple ingredients combined together to take a sandwich to another level. My YEA decided for the ham & brie sandwich which was toasted on a panini press to make that cheese oh-so-gooey. Thick white slices of white pullman bread contained the ham, brie, and dijon mustard. It was a joy to keep sinking my teeth into as we traded bites of sandwich with each other. The sandwiches were a totally satisfying treat and we just sat along the very small wall bar observing folks coming in to buy those loaves of bread.

justin edward

Best baguettes in the city, I can't get enough. I am sure to pick one up whenever I am in the area. It features a crispy crust with a soft inside that pairs well with everything.

Crystal Monaco

Went for the first time today to purchase sourdough bread. It was the only one opened on a Sunday until 6:00 pm. The service was exquisite. They were busy and still took the time to answer my questions on the different Organic flours they used to make their sourdough breads. I purchased the sprouted seed loaf sourdough bread and the black olive sourdough bread. Both freshly baked sourdough loaves had a crust that was perfectly crusty with a soft center. The taste was heavenly ????????. Their Organic flours were sold at $8.00 a 1kg. Their sourdough breads ranged from $6.00 - $7.00 approx. I hope that in the future they will sell gluten free sourdough breads. It's located at the corner of Kensington Rd and Baldwin. On the North side. They also sold other goodies. I will definitely return and highly recommend that you visit and buy the sourdough bread that is not only tastier but more healthy for you. ????????????????.

Tina Li

Delicious breads that are worth the cost.

MISYYZ

Simply delicious!! I was impressed with the cleanliness and level of customer service. Kudos to the team at this bakery. The cinnamon was fresh and very tasty. Recommend giving them a try as I don’t think you will be disappointed.

Raul Crainic

Quality breads, better prices than Mabel's and or Forno Cultura and equal if not better quality.

Jonathan Lee

Great bakery that is equally skilled at breads and pastries. The almond croissant is among the best I've had, with a crispy outer shell giving way to a buttery inside with a respectable amount of sweetened almond filling. The seeded sourdough is quite good. You can also ask them to slice any loaf you get.

Clarence Yeung

Baguette is arguably best in town, caneles on special days are worth making the trip for.

Feras Takriti

Good but not outstanding bread making and baking, pastry used to be much better!

Ms C

Customer service. I bought a sourdough and asked it to be sliced. Get home and the ends, the part , I look forward to , are missing. I guess the dude needs some training. Also, no paper bags, as the creator of blackbird recommends. Ugh! Frustrating ! Get it right will you . Yet, the bread is truly a delicious experience.

Daniel Ferreira

Gr8 place! Every single product that I have were amazing! Also they have a very friendly service.

Ben B

The bakers at blackbird are true artists - their loaves taste as fantastic as they look

Sun Jing

I was in the area and wanted to try the bread that others had recommended. It was just before close and so there wasn't that much selection left. I believe in getting the quintessential items of any new place I try anyway, so it wasn't an issue. I picked up plain white bread sliced and I appreciated getting the display item, since I didn't have to wait for the slicing and bagging process. It was pretty pricey, about $7 but it was a large loaf. The people there was also very kind, and offered informative advice.

Marcio Del Valle y Araujo

I think this is one of the best breads I've ever tasted. I did my share of traveling, but even in France it's not easy to find such a good bread. Crusty yet soft...and the taste!! I concede that my best breads ever are still in France, but Blackbird has made to the top 10.

Mike Douglas

I came here because there was a write up in Toronto life magazine stating this is one of the best bakeries for my favourite bread....sourdough. They did not disappoint, we purchased a fig and walnut sourdough loaf for $6.50 I believe. The bread was so delicious and fresh we will be back soon. I also bought a tasty fig pastry and it melted in my mouth.

Hans Krause

The best bakery in Toronto right now. I’ve had A LOT of bread in this city and it can’t be beat I hope they can maintain quality as they expand their operation.

Valeriia Zholobova

Love this little bakery. Amazing sourdoughs and Brioche on Saturdays. They also have Cut Coffee bags for one of the best prices in the neighborhood

Car Lover

Is there anything better in life than bread? How about amazing bread? Best in the city. Bar none. If you find better, tell me. Well done Blackbird!

Alex G

Staff are friendly, bread is so fresh and delicious!

radhika dattani

Must try place for all bread lovers. They have amazing focaccia breads and love their butter croissant. I am a lemon tart fan theirs were absolutely delicious.

Alice Southey

Not the cheapest bread in the city, but undoubtedly the best. The sesame spelt makes for a particularity great grilled cheese sandwich.

Marc Chabot

For those that have the ears to listen this is the best sour dough in Toronto.

Masood Mohajer

I have been a big fan of this bakery for a number of years and return to their Kensington location for my fix of sourdough bread and mid riff girth expanding high caloric pastries and croissants. Was never disappointed. They were 4 or 5 stars. Until that is this past weekend. Now whether the baker was having an off day or it was just my poor luck, but the plain and the almond croissants I purchased were dry and hard. Just unbelievable actually for me to have to encounter this poor level of pastry making from such a hallowed establishment. So I send this review as a shot across their bow to remind the black bird that if its getting too big for its britches then they are going to loose clients. Time to buckle up Birdie num num and get back to what I know you are capable of producing.

Jim Miller

The baguette bread is delicious and the almond croissants .... beyond words.

Mo Afshar

Fair quality but a little pricey.

Christopher

Best sourdough in the city, great sandwiches and preserves, and their sweet tarts are awesome too. Wish they were open a little later on weekdays, but you can't have everything.

wiw Al

Decent good pastries. Nice staff.. today’s almond croissant was a bit dry, over browned & overbaked. Too little filling :(

Christie Wong

After you have this bread, theres no turning back. My favourite is their olive sourdough.

Phoenix 69

Excellent pastry. But the customer service needs work, today was a blank stare as I stood in front of the presumed employee who just turned her head and stared at me, so much I had to ask her the only employee in front of me: do I order from you? Yea. SO RUDE. The the other girl took my payment and the one serving me only to make matters worse!!! PUSHES MY BOX OF PASTRIES INTO MY HAND. I’m sorry that’s some covert shady ish’!!!!! Will not ever go in there again when this juvenile employee is working again. Constructive Criticism: just say hello?! Why stare down the ONLY customer in the bakery then further PUSH the box of pastries in my hand??? What have I done to you lady?? It’s noon on a rainy Wednesday?!!Unbelievable. AND, the pasty inside this box looks very burned.

Leo Moncel

Great quality sourdough bread and seasonally rotating baked goods. They've done a great job with managing the flow of customers in a small shop!

Gabi Butcher

Best bread in the city!!! You gotta try the Olive/Rosemary!!!

Amy Yang

Amazing sourdough baguette (CAD4) and flaky chocolate croissant.

Catherine Merritt

Love the seeded sourdough and chocolate cork!

Hyunjung Jung

I got chocolate croissant, cinnamon bun and almond croissant!! Soso good

Stephanie Yim

Best. Sour dough Bread. Ever.

Jonas Brandon

Easily the best sourdough in Canada. Great desserts and sandwiches too!

Diana Adams

Amazing bakery in Kensington, love the sourdough and pastries If you've never been, it's time to go, a real treat awaits you!

Jessica Pease

Holy cow, the seeded sourdough loaf is the best bread I have ever eaten. I'm slightly regretting sharing how good it is because it sells out so fast and I want it all to myself! Their chocolate almond croissant is killer too.

Taylor Koyanagi

Incredible shop. There's nothing quite like their fresh bread! I'm a big fan of their olive bread. They make little desserts that look delectable!

Sandra Taylor

This morning I had possibly the best croissant I have ever tasted, buttery, crispy goodness and the Jalapeno scones were to die for,. Wishing there were more than 5 stars to hand out

Taylor Perkins

Some of, if not the best donuts I’ve ever had. The shop has a 10CAD minimum for credit cards otherwise there a .25 fee added. Counter service only. Friendly and the line moved quickly.

Tia Garcia

I had a cinnamon bun and I loved it! The outside skin of bun was so crispy and inside chewy and buttery. it seems like they use croissants dough to make cinnamon bun and I think it’s a really nice idea. Next time I’ll try their bread. Highly recommended if you’re in the area.

Alex Filtsos

best frickin bread in town, and the staff are all angels. olive bread and cinnamon buns are otherworldy.

Esther González Flores

I love the bread but is the time schedule correct? I've been there 5.30 pm.twice and it is already closed

Gerald Tan

Good quality bread. Kouign aman was great. The sourdough was nice and crusty and the pecorino foccacia was good. Friendly staff and the store looked nice and clean. The prices were reasonable for artisan bread. I paid $6 for a loaf of sourdough and they can also cut it for you. I would go back here again.

Heather Liu

Since the day I’ve found this place, it’s the only place I get my sourdough, it’s so chewy and flavorful. Also super in love with their mini sourdough Baguette, perfect for a sandwich!

Yuk Yu, Alison LEE (Alison)

Love their sourdough baguette! Crispy crust and soft yet bouncy inside! Perfect!!

John Lozinsky

I really can't review Blackbird well enough. I will always be a regular as long as I'm in Toronto, and if I'm not, I'll always be sure to stop by when I'm in town. They remind me of a bakery back home in Saskatoon, as the breads are delicious, and there are many options for desserts and other goods. Plus, the canelés are to die for! You can never go wrong. Or maybe I shouldn't praise them...that way I can get more for myself! Ten out of five stars!

Lyubov Lytvyn

Psyched to have found our new go-to bread spot! The spelt sesame is amazing, and the mini baguettes lovely too. Personally I'm not crazy about the nigella seeds in the seeded sourdough, but they have a multigrain sourdough without them that I'm looking forward to trying next.

I Fouchard

An absolute must. Every time I'm in Toronto I make the time to stop in and buy a ton of stuff. Breads are stunning and delicious. Pastries are masterfully made with a strong emphasis on quality and flavour. I'd suggest a favorite but they are all amazing!

Siwoo Kim

Taste legit. Kinda pricer than the tastes. But I will still go back.

Veronika K

I was very happy to find this bakery in Toronto. They make their own bread daily. the bread that I bought tasted wonderfully! I also met a few locals at the store who admitted that that is their favourite bread store in town!! I’ll Be back tomorrow !!

Jeff Fynn

I'm a big fan of the seeded sourdough but all their loaves are delicious. I also like that you can pick up a bag of Sam James coffee beans too.

Andrew Yeung

Best bread and pastry shop in Kensington Market...Enjoy.

M C

Best sourdough in the city! (And I have tried many, believe me). It's always either the Baldwin or the Kensington, for me. My grocery store, during the pandemic, has been selling out of their sourdoughs always lately. So after two weeks without Blackbird's sourdoughs, I’ve had enough, and decided to drive to their store to get some. Lo-and-behold, when I got there today, there was a long line outside their store. I wasn't surprised at all. Their breads really do have a unique taste to them compared to the other bakeries in Toronto. It's my first time here at their store and I don't think it will be my last as they have a much bigger selection of goodies here than what my grocery store carries. Please open a location in the Junction one day, if you can. ;)

Alain Schöbi

Such a nice bakery ! The bread and pastries are excellent and the staff is very friendly :)

Dan Lipton

The best baguettes in the city. And their sourdough ain't half bad either (sarcasm - it's also dope). Don't sleep on the super awesome pastries!!

Minnie

My favourite bakery to buy bread. I especially like that they will slice anything for you, which isn't always the case at other artisan sourdough establishments. I like the Baldwin brown, multigrain and seeded sourdough.

Kelly Robson

The best bread in Toronto. Terrific, friendly staff who serve the line fast but with a smile. The pastries are very good as well, especially the chocolate corks, danishes, and tarts. Someone below complains about the prices, but they're in line with the quality and you pay more for worse bread and pastries elsewhere. I'm grateful to have Blackbird in my neighborhood!

Eagle Lion

Some of the very best bread in Toronto, hands down! The staff are always warm and friendly; and so are the sourdough baguettes. Visit in the morning and have the opportunity to pick up your bread while it is still warm and fresh, there really is nothing quite like it.

Ty

I’m scared to move from my place knowing I won’t be in walking distance of blackbird. The loafs and fresh baked goods are amazing, and sometimes they have seasonal items that makes me it feel like an unmutual breakup when it’s eventually taken away. I really can’t go anywhere else, it’s my favourite bakery. The staff there is also usually exceptionally friendly!

Brittany McDougall

It's a shame I wasn't in Toronto to go shopping because I would have picked up all kinds of bread from here. Their focaccia looks fantastic, and their little pastries and tarts looked delicious. I only got their cinnamon bun, which was not done in the traditional way but theirs is better than that! I will be going back to try their pizza for sure!

Sabrina Paez-Parent

Breads are going to be perfectly imperfect from Blackbird because everything is baked behind the counter all day long and not commercially manufactured. This charm adds so much flavour and character to your baked goods. The baguettes for example are crispier and have more colour then your typical grocery store baguette and the flavour is far superior. The baked goods are unique and they change pretty regularly. Highly recommend trying it out!

James Chow

Great customer service. Good quality products & very clean store. A bit expensive....

Demmykyoung

Here is a personal review from someone who's been a regular at Blackbird for more than a year. Disclaimer: This whole review relies on the 'Ham Sandwich'. It used to be a go-to lunch when you don't want to spend too much money on food, but still want a quality meal. I will never for get the bit of wasabi to make things spicy. It was $6.30 after tax. (This was the pre-pickle era) Then summer 2017 came along, and they stopped doing pizzas and sandwiches because the savoury chef was injured. It was a dark era, but I keep checking in to see when the chef was coming back. And the day came. September 12th, 2017. They put a sign out that indicated pizzas and sandwiches are back. Going to Blackbird to get the 'Ham Sandwich' was the first thing I did that day. But here came the disappointment. The price of the sandwich went up to $8.50. But that didn't stop me, because we have a history. Eating that sandwich while watching TV in the morning was my weekend joy, and I waited the whole summer just for this. But what is this? As I bite the sandwich, I taste something that I have never tasted before. It was the pickle. It wasn't a pleasant tasting pickle, and the pickle juice was all over the sandwich. It was not good. My old pal has changed. I did not recognize the 'Ham Sandwich' anymore. I asked myself, 'why on earth would they put this horrible tasting pickle into the sandwich?'. The next morning, I went to Blackbird again just to give my pal another try. As I cash out, I asked the cashier, "Did the price of the sandwich go up?" acting like I don't already know this. And she says, "Yes, we started putting house made pickle and making that pickle is a lot of labour, haha". I couldn't believe it. There it was. The 'House Made Pickle'. It was laughing at my face as I split my sandwich to pick them out. I have nightmares about The 'House Made Pickle'. That was the end. I go back time to time and get the 'Ham Sandwich (post-pickle era)' hoping I won't find any 'House Made Pickle'. However I find it getting bigger and bigger as the day goes by. To this day, I will remember the 'Ham Sandwich (pre-pickle era)'. R.I.P. - 'Ham Sandwich'.

Bo Gispen

Kensington loaf... best sourdough bread around... and toasted... whole new level of awesome.

Alexandru Titeu

The baguettes are delicious. I sometimes eat the whole thing before I even get home.

Carrie-Ann Talbot

Awesome bread and pastries. Great people work then too

Tina C

This place is one of the few places that actually doesn't use yeast to make their sourdough. I am allergic and can never get any decent bread from anywhere. So far I have tried their seeded sourdough and rosemary/olive one both are spectacular!

Shayan Givehchian

Best sourdough in Toronto. Go earlier in the day because they run out towards the evening

Bianca Johnson

Best buns and bread in town!!

Cathrine F

Love their sourdoughs (plenty of choices) and basic focaccia is delish as well! Lots of vegan options!

Wilson Hong

Hands down the best bread in the city. Cinnamon buns are a must try too.

Emory Hufbauer

Absolutely amazing pastries, friendly staff!

Christine A

Love bread, and the moment i walked it I was in heaven with the smell of freshly baked bread. Small front so the line up was circling, but worth it.

Rachel O'Neill

They have great fruit danishes among many other delicious baked goods. I called ahead to order for pick up. Friendly staff. Great place!

Sara Boers

They have all the proper signage to ensure distancing. It is a quick and easy process to get your food. Everything is absolutely delicious!

joanna E

Small Rotational bakery, small selection, they do Dutch loafs the traditional, heavy way. I picked up a pull apart baguette and two baby french rolls. I've had better baguettes and rolls but the Dutch loafs and flatbreads keep me coming. I never know what I'm going to see there but I don't shop daily, so I could be completely wrong, that's just what my experience has been.

Bastien Goodman

Best bakery I could find in Toronto. The only place in Toronto where pastries are elaborated based on flavor, and not only on appearance. I ordered 150 pastries for a big event, and everything went super smoothly. Lemon tarts and cannelés were a huge success!

Robyn Hughes

That Pullman loaf!! I strongly advise you never come here if you live in Toronto because you will never be able to eat anyone else's bread again. And, for the love of all that is holy, never try their Pullman loaf unless you're fully committed to the high carb lifestyle you're about to embrace. You guys have ruined me for bread!

Rishita Gudhka

The almond croissant is amazing. Their granola is top notch. Love this place.

A Cartier

On most Toronto best bakery list, you see Blackbird baking on there and after finally getting my butt back to Kensington, I can see why this bakery among the hippie shops is on those list. This isnt your typical homey grandma style bakery. It has artisanal sour doughs, tricky treats like the canele (I need to get me some copper moulds cause silicone aint cutting it), or beautiful viennoiserie (croissants!). It does run a bit higher on the price point than your run of the mill place but it is worth it. The bakery has no seating as it has every type of bread or kitchen item you could ever want on the shelves in front of the counter. I was very in their sweets and I've heard they make a great Canele and their lemon tart is quite good. As i waited in line to get to the front order, I notice that there was a man who looked a bit timid and lost... I think he came in to ask for some spare bread because he was homeless. Amazingly, I think they gave him some from the back. If they did give some spare bread and I read the situation right... Blackbird deserves some true accolades and not just my rating. The line quickly and I was able to snag the last canele (FINALLY!), last Cinnamon bun, and one of their seasonal pumpkin tart. It is fall and I could get the lemon tart another time. So I was easily persuaded to go for their newest offering. Pumpkin Tart - This was a good sized shallow tart that has wonderful tender tart that has a tempered sweetness. It isn't overly buttery but I like the flavour. The filling is a nice creamy pumpkin filling that is very smooth, with a good dose of spices that pop (i'm detecting the usual cinnamon but also perhaps nutmeg and/or cloves), and a nice amount of sweetness. I like the candied seeds that add a crunch but also nice visual. 4.5/5 Canele - My favourite canele is from Roselle. I bought mine from Blackbird in the late afternoon so I knew that the time sensitive canele would have been made early that morning and it would have been sitting. Still .. this canele had a nice crust that wasn't soggy. That was surprising and very nice to have. The inside was a good sweetness though I like the vanilla seeds and flavouring more of Roselle... this was still very good. I found the inside to be a moderate custardy texture ... mine was quite bubbly with more vacant spaces than I'm used to. I know how damn hard these are to make so these get a repeat buy from me! 4/5 Cinnamon Bun - this looks so pretty with its innate swirl and heavy dusting of cinnamon sugar. I found this to be another tender bread but not the terribly soft spongey ones that are normal in the malls. I like it but I did find the flavour doesnt translate as much beyond the exterior crust. 3.5/5 With the canele and Pumpkin tart, it definite scores high marks and appreciation for the wonderful items they can make and I will be coming back to see if I can try their croissants and lemon tarts!

The baldwin sourdough is to die for. The crust stayed crispy but not too hard long after purchase. The bread itself is not too sweet, which I prefer, and pairs perfectly with their onion jam. I went on the weekend and there was a small queue outside so dress appropriately for the weather ????.

Catherine C

Nothing can beat some fresh sourdough bread! Chewy, crusty, with a complex flavour!

David Larsson

Really good pastry and everything I’ve tried here have been really good.

Terry Forth

Had the Soppresatta today. Bread was amazing, as expected, but the meat, cheese and greens tasted like they were picked just before making the sandwich (11 am). I think that they source their ingredients from the local butcher etc. It certainly tastes that way ????.

d rhodes

The crowd says it all. Well made bread that is worth waiting for.

Henry Dillon

Best bread in Toronto. The crust is fairly well done so you get a good crunch from it. I always go for their sourdoughs and they are super tasty.

Sarah Tang

Best baguette in town!

Felicity Stroman

Their sourdoughs are amazing and I’ve tried and loved all of their pastries. It’s hard to pick but I think their strawberry danish is my favourite. Always friendly service too!

Erik Petersen

Best bakery this side of NYC. Where has your Spanish inspired(torta) breakfast sandwhich day, we miss it!

Sab Fuc

omg I just picked up this baguette from Black Bird Bakery at Pusateri’s and I’m hooked !!! Amazing bread !!! Will be making a trip to their bakery very excited to try more !!!

daniela m

I was one of the first customers I met Mr. Blackbird at the Food Festival - his breads and bagiet were the best in the city - crusty crust firm with big wholes inside and great smell. Unfortunatelly since few month the products changed so much that I cant enjoy breads anymore from that place?! Breds dont have any crust not to mention crunch, inside is fluffy and gooey, cant prepared sandwich because it falls apart. It is sad it was the only one bread to enjoy it. Anyway my family have to give up on it. I wish you luck anyway.

I absolutely love Blackbird bakery. I had all of the breads and most of their pastries, sandwiches and pizza squares - everything has a great quality and fantastic taste. Their sourdough breads are to die for...Their breads and goodies are of course a bit expensive but you can be sure you're getting high quality baked goods for your hardly-earned bucks. It would be nice though if the bakery would have some type of promotion/incentive for their most frequent customers...like "buy 10 breads and get one free" or something like that - I would come even more often!

W P

I can see why Meghan, Duchess of Sussex used to come here. Do try their pizza bianca and butter croissants. They taste so good. I want to come back soon to try their focaccia and danishes The service was friendly and the two young women (one of them actually looked like Meghan) who worked behind the counter had a kind and genuine smile The edit: Went back today and tried their milk buns and almond croissant. The taste was still good. However, different people were working today behind the counter and their tired and cynical energy was off-putting

Honest Dave

Top notch product. My family loves their bread. Best in Toronto. You get what you pay for

Erick N

Best bread in the city! Amazing, crusty sourdough, baguettes and delicious pastries. I highly recommend.

Caroline Wong

Love buying bread from them especially their Pullman bread and Almond Croissants... very tasty.

Matthew Kubicek

Bread is outstanding and the pastries are fantastic. Especially the Danish!

Kat E

Scones are amazing! Service is friendly. Small space but lots of choices.

mushimaster94 S

The baked goods here a pretty good. They taste rich and you can really feel the quality baking. However the prices are quite steep I would say, its definitely not a place trying to offer good deals. The place has an upper class feel, and I notice most of the people who go here are of that demographic, not very welcoming to others (booo!). The cashiers are sometimes good, sometimes they ignore me and talk among themselves. I get cut in line here quite often while I wait for a cashiers to notice me, people always barge up in front of me and announce their order which get the cashiers attention.

Elena Serra

I'm a big fan of the breads and the pain au raisin! Worth making a special trip to Kensington every week.

Barbara Stitt

Worth the 1 hour walk for the "Baldwin Brown Sourdough".

Don Malcho

One of the few places one can buy Kouign-amann. Nice authentic bakery with good variety of products.

Paul H

Amazing bread and croissants! Also, great customer service with contactless curb side pickup during COVID-19.

P Kaur

Their breads are so amazing that we bought more breads than we should've (keeping low on carbs). It's a small place with not a huge variety but they make a super vegetarian sandwich also. Service is great, but prices are a bit on the high side.

Justin Gould

Blackbird's sourdough breads (made with real sourdough starter) is amazing. My favourite is the wholewheat sourdough. Highly recommend it. Their employees are lovely.

Gordon Barnes

Fantastic selection of great breads, friendly staff, nice pastries.

Steve Thomas Greer

We drive in from kitchener to get the black olive bread....hands down the best!!! #carbcoma!!!!

Shaween K

I bought 3 types of breads. They were all good. We had to line up to go in .one customer at a time becauseofcovid.staff were very friendly. The bread is very tasty and the good thing is it is local and very good. I bought figs and walnut loaf. Very recommended.

M K

This bakery ties so nicely in the neighbourhood. I’ve only ever gotten their baguettes, which are very tasty but kill my jaw with how chewy they are. Would love to try more items from Blackbird.

Christine Gomez

Best sourdough bread I've ever had in my life! They carry Sam James coffee too, which is a plus!

Claire

Staff is very friendly, products are good and I love the fact that they use organic whole wheat. You can’t go wrong with their breads however I find their baguette a bit over baked.

Cindy Brown

I shop where the management are as great as the goods they sell. I know you amazon shoppers have no control over yourselves.

Aaron Fung

The best bread in town. Such a small place but amazing bread, even pastries. If you like sourdough bread - that’s your place.

Natasha Edmund

Yesterday i bought tarts baguettes and cookies that were so tasty.

Marc Bullis

Not to be missed if you are in Toronto. Creative and delightful. They also offer sandwiches, best coffee anywhere, and granola that is just great.

Marina Datri

Caneles!! Blackbird makes them, and they are delicious, also don’t leave without a loaf of their sourdough!

Noor Soultan

I went there in the morning and i tried roasted tomatoes and ricotta cheese danish and it was delicious!

Javier VG

Great selection of sourdough bread. If you love sourdough bread, this is the place to get it.

Samuel Tisi

The bread is amazing but the hours are awful. People worry about gentrification in this area and having zero bread after 6pm isn't really friendly to the working class or 9to5ers.

liza liza

Outstanding bread and baguette; the pastries are just OK.

Robert Zheng

Have returned. There is absolutely no substitute for this gem. Consistency is the key - and these guys and gals bring the best every time. They're also rarely out of something, so you will never go there disappointed. There will always be lines - its worth your time.

David Llewelyn

Some of the best sourdough in Toronto. Always fresh, always of the highest quality. Available at their Baldwin St. location in Kensington Market, and at Fiesta Farms (maybe others too). Highly recommended!

Aziz Zaoui

Best almond croissant i’ve ate! Really good!

Jimmy K

Went on a whole market crawl. This place had line ups out the door. Bread was delish!

Ankur

I haven’t found any bread as good as Blackbird. I recently moved further away but I’m still coming to blackbird and buying their sourdough in bulk (I freeze it and it’s still great when toasted) to stock up. That’s how good this place is.

Nooria Polda

Cute bakery in Kensington market. Pain au chocolat was excellent.

Dua M

Everything is burnt. Evidence is in the photos. They haven't changed this for years and seem to even own the fact that the baked goods can double as construction material. If you like paying too much money to scratch the skin off your palate this is the place to go!

Ben Cherian

This bread be delicious yall

nicole joly

I love their sourdough bread ,I wish they had a sourdough rye or 100 whole wheat without seeds. But they do make the best sourdough yummy.

Yahren Tissera

Best bread in Toronto.

Amelie

Best almond croissants and rye bread!

James Ryan

The only place we buy bread and hamburger buns! Always fresh and delicious.

Laura Fraixanet

I'm from France so I need my bread! One of the best bakeries in town, their half baguette is perfect for a sandwich. Sometimes I feel like they overcook the classic baguette, but they're good anyway. I tried all their sourdough and croissants, very good quality for Toronto as well! Also the staff is ALWAYS kind

Christine

Favourite bread - sourdough; favourite pastry - lemon tart (has a crispy top like creme brûlée!). I've tried the pizza too, not exactly my thing - I prefer thin crust, but admittedly tasty.

Alexa Todd

Absolutely incredible bread! Favourite in the city!

Somin Park

I had something called a chocolate cork. So many regrets. Why did I eat it on the way home instead of giving it my full undivided attention the way it deserves? Why didn’t I buy two? No worries, I’ll be coming out of my way to get more!

Adam Riches

Best bread in the city, kindest staff and owner ever!!

Laura S

Truly the best bread in the city. Any of their sourdoughs or rye breads are out of this world. Nothing else in the city comes close in terms of having amazing loafs.

Angela L

Best sourdough bread in the city. Go early on weekends, they sell out quick.

Agnes Beckmann

I had a lemon almond tarte and omg - I loved it! The dough was so yummy, really, I will go there more often.

Sonia Tomaz

Visited this bakery a few days ago and picked up a cake they had which was puff pastry with a hazelnut fill - let me tell you it was the most delicious dessert I've ever had! It was light and fluffy (like eating air!) with an amazing hazelnut cream fill. I was initially worried that the cream would be overpowering or too sweet but it was perfect! Like an airy bite of heaven. Will definetely be back for this one!

Rivers

Simply the best baguettes in the city. And I always am tempted into buying some of their fresh baked treats when I visit for bread.

J Mox

Blackbird is amazing. Great staff great sandwiches, great everything honestly.

Teele R

Breads and chocolate croissants absolutely amazing.

Emma Blanche

The flakiest, softest cinnamon bun I’ve ever tried! Delicious spot for pastures, sandwiches, and fresh bread.

Matthew Simioni

Great sourdough bread and amazing selection of sweets!

Scott C

If you love bread, look no further. They make a wonderful assortment of breads, sandwiches, and small pastries - our favourite is the round white sourdough (ask for it sliced to eat on the way home). Although Kensington is a busy area, especially on weekends, the bread is worth navigating the crowds to get to. Enjoy!

Zachary Fouchard

Amazing bakery! Delicious breads and pastries, always fresh.

Chet Tilokani

Best sourdough in the city. Hands down. It’s worth going out of your way for the bread here. The staff is friendly and helpful. This is a great little piece of the market.

Greg Wilson

So good!

Alex Wolski

Tried a number of baked goods from here. Everything was phenomenal!

Murtaza Shambhoora

Good baked goods, but sandwiches are really bad for the price. Not a lot of meat, cold, and too much mustard.

Back Bitting

The bakery is small with a limited selection. Things seemed to sell out pretty fast not leaving much for other customers. I was in mid afternoon and felt pressed by the limited selection. I picked up a Pullman loaf. It was dense, heavy and short in height. I prefer bread that's light, fluffy and tall in height. Something I expect from a professional bakery. I was then charged 9$ for a whole loaf. Lol.. if you think I'm spending 9$ on my weekly sandwich bread you are sadly mistaken. Shocking anyone would continue to buy a dense brick for 9$ a pop. Havent tried their pastry, baguettes or pizza. I am willing to try those out but after being told my bread was going to be 9$ i wasnt going to risk another costly mistake. The Pullman bread I wouldnt buy again. It's not worth it and the taste wasnt anything to brag about.

Jessica Kang

Best bread and organic sour dough in town as I can tell. A small store located in the Kensington market with high quality bread and nice customer service!

Mara Derissen

Their baguette, focaccia, and multigrain bread are just amazing. Really good sourdough, which I find hard to get in Toronto. The pastries I’ve tried were also really good (apple tart and pumpkin pie). I will definitely return and get some additional things!

Shamik Sen

Horrible experience. Live in the neighborhood so used to frequent this place but lately, they are just plain nasty. Have had multiple experiences of staff being impolite, or rushing me out. They used to be a great spot but seems they are resting on their laurels. I would avoid and give a chance to a bakery with a better attitude.

Y D

I tried the honey ginger scone, it was pretty good and i don't even like ginger! I'll definitely go back

Maya Patel

Definitely a treat to get some croissants and bread from here. Made fresh daily, and good selection if you come before things sell out! Highly recommend the croissants! But all of the baked goods are exceptional! It may seem pricey, but worth it, quality ingredients and flavour.

Olivia Yetter

I have been going to Blackbird for years for bread (weekly staple), pastries and sandwiches. All really good, never wavering on quality. Not a huge fan of their frangipane danishes, but I do look forward to their rhubarb in the spring as well as their other seasonal items (peach, tomato especially). RIP their pizza, which was one of my favourite things to order. I love how they always have something new and exciting to try, especially around the holidays. Sandwiches are bomb, and truly their overall quality and friendly service keeps me coming back week after week, even if there is a line.

Richard Tavares

Hands down...the best bread, specifically sourdough in the city.

Eddi Krypton

Really great quality bread, I've been a customer since day one when they opened up on Baldwin street. They used to wear gloves before and the cashier was not the one handling the bread, recently I went to buy a loaf and the bread was not handled in a hygienic manner. The cashier handled the bread with bare hands AFTER touching the screen of his iPad and handling cash. I asked about this and he said he washes his hands after every transaction but I didn't see him wash before handling my loaf. *Update* Recently went by and it seems they took this review seriously and are taking better care with handling now.

Sin Jaz

Loved the bread and the croissants. My favourite was the plain croissant but chocolate and almond were good too.

Rémy Monico

Bread is good... like a taste of europe rev.: Came by today, Monday 5:15pm, the store was closed. Disappointed.

evelyn akow

Got an almond croissant, went above and beyond my expectations! Absolutely heavenly! Well be returning for more

Ana Ada

The Kensington sourdough is one of the best I’ve had and has the perfect tang

Ash

Best place in Toronto for sourdough bread and croissants.

Reene Katz

Great sourdough seeded bread!! Wish they would either open a northern outlet or distribute a little more widely. There are a couple of shops that do distribute some items but a few more items would be great!

Philippe Fischer

Some of the best bread in the city. Loaf only lasts a couple of minutes when I bring it home.

samtaitai

Their sourdough was great.

Soyoung Hong

Honestly this is the best bakery shop that makes sourdough baguettes. After visiting Paris, I fell in love with baguettes and this store is the only store I found in Toronto so far that tastes similar like the one from Paris! Their buns are great too and sandwiches are SO GOOD! kinda sucks they only cut the load in one size but overall amazing!

Jose Marcano

Best place to get you baguette and almond croissant
