We are relatively new to Thorold and quickly discovered this place. The donuts are great and a fabulous value, and it reminds me of way back before Tims took over the world and we used to hang out at our local donut shop as kids.
Since we started going regularly in September we noticed the staff didn’t always wear their masks, but would at least put then on when we entered or when gently reminded by us. Finally, a couple of months ago they put a sign on the door requiring customers to wear their mask and the staff has been much better with theirs as well.
But today, as I was about to enter for our weekend treat, two men walked in ahead of me without masks. I pointed to the sign and told them they should have their masks on. The one man replied, “I can do what I want, I own the place.” They then proceeded to walk unmasked through the store that had at least one customer in there already, right past all the open display cases of donuts.
This saddens me, as we loved this place, and I know this would not be a big issue for some people, but for us, this is a deal breaker. In these times, wearing a mask is such a small inconvenience, that it should be almost automatic. We all forget at times, and that’s certainly understandable, but for a customer to be treated so dismissively by the owner is completely unforgivable.
I realize our weekly purchase isn’t going to cripple this business, but I do hope that this can serve as a warning to those for whom this matters, or ideally, this owner realizes his mistake and corrects his behaviour. Unfortunately, I will not be returning to find out.
