I'll confess their cinnamon buns didn't look great at first glance. They were a little too dark. The glaze was thin and crackled. Usually, the appearance gives you an idea of how good it will taste, but in this case... that first bite came as a flavour-blasted surprise. These are so good! And they make cookies too. From Old John in the 1970's I got great bread and the feel of a family bakery. From Old John's grandson, "Little John" in the seventies, but Old John now, I get the same bread baked fresh, handled lovingly, and sold well by friendly staff. Did I say they make cookies, too. Cookies notwithstanding, people who have moved away sometimes get it expressed to them when they feel the need. I live happily knowing that the new old John will live longer than I will, waking early to have the ovens hot at 3 AM. Buy the bread, feel the love. And 13 is still a baker's dozen.

It might be a great bakery, but a company that doesn't carry credit card option in 2018 is loosing lots of business. Only cash or debit is accepted. I don't carry any of those in my pocket, only credit card. As a business owner myself I understand there is surcharges on CC purchases but a business should be able to absorb that and offer the convenience to their clients, especially when they are right downtown. Just my thought.

Years ago when enquiring about whether their pies were vegan my wife and I were assured that the crust is vegetable shortening, many had no egg wash, and so most of their pies were vegan. We were ecstatic, they pies were good, and we liked to support a local business. Fast forward to a couple weeks ago, we once again, just to be sure, enquired whether their newer varieties were also vegan when they told us that their pies were never vegan. They confirmed for us that all their pies are made with lard, all have eggs, and in fact their bread is also made with lard. That means that not only are their pies and bread not vegan, but not even vegetarian! I'm not exactly sure how you make bread with lard, but that's what they told us, with a side of attitude when we wanted clarification. Needless to say, we feel duped that we have been buying their pies for years unknowingly consuming the lard they're made with. We are done with this place, and anyone with food allergies would do well to do the same, since they seem to want to keep the ingredients of all their products a secret. Hot tip: if you want a good local vegan pie, go to Regency Bakery instead.

Wonderful bakery! Their sourdough bread and cornmeal muffins are as good as homemade. You have to get there early to nab some muffins because this place sells out fast. A sure sign of quality and value.

my family has buying bread here at golden grain since they opened .....I love their bread and baked goods you can not get this anywhere else like it in town.....we buy our bread there weekli for the week for myself and family we do not like store bought bread...once you have golden grain bread you can never go back to store bread.....just love this place
