Here you will be able to see all the feddbacks of people like you who consumed the products and services of Ruth & Dean - Luncheonette & Bakery (Bakery) in the territory close to Oak Bay (Canada).
Nowadays the business gets a score of 4.6 over 5 and this rating is based on 127 reviews.
You must have seen that it reaches an reviews average is practically the best one, and it's based on a high number of reviews, so we may conclude that the assessment is quite accurate. If people have bothered to leave their feddback when they've done well with the business, it works.
As you know, we don't usually stop to set scores when they are correct and we usually do it only if we have had a problem or issue...
This Bakery belongs to the category of Restaurant.
Went in for cake samples and left with a full stomach. Delicious!
Super jolly staff and a beautiful plant filled space to enjoy a cup of jo in. Also, if you have never liked cake before (as I did years ago before meeting Rudy) you have to try the 5 layered beauties by the slice. Always changing and always delicious. BIG thanks Ruth and Dean staff! You always put a smile on my face <3
Delicious coffee and cakes. Best to wear a sweater if youre going here though. They tend to leave the door open because it gets hot in their baking bit.
The sandwiches have vision, the salad is excellent and of course she knows how to bake a good.
Just a very brief note to express my appreciation for the wedding cake and cupcakes for my son's wedding last Saturday - an incredible treat for both the eyes and the tastebuds! Luckily there were leftovers (only because we had ordered significantly more than the number of guests!) - and therefore had the opportunity to taste more than the one (or two!) consumed on the wedding day. I have yet to figure out which is my favourite - the same trouble I had when we were sampling prior to making the original order. This was also the reason I'd told my son we could not cut down on the amount ordered, as it would have been too stressful trying to figure out which flavour to remove! Best wedding cupcakes I have ever had ... and the prettiest too! You will definitely be top of my list at any other event I host requiring sweet treats!
After viewing beautiful photos of their cakes on Instagram, I ordered a birthday cake. I was completely thrilled with the service and the stunning cake. Thanks!
Just Okay. Took a long time to actually try them.
Some of the best baked treats in town. Ruth & Dean consistently produces the tastiest cakes with creative designs, made to order for any occasion. They also have an excellent cafe offering a tasty variety of baked goods, breakfast and lunch options. Can't wait to try their new location!!
LOVE Ruth & Dean! I received a custom birthday cake from R&D and it was amazing - it was moist, not too sweet and of course, beautiful. Also a great spot for brunch or a mid-day coffee and dessert. You can't go wrong!
I can comment on the latte, cappuccino, earl grey tea latte, and Nanaimo bars. All super yummy but the Earl Grey tea latte and Nanaimo bars are particularly delicious. The atmosphere and decor are nice and I always enjoy my visits. There’s always parking which is nice and sitting outside on a sunny day is also nice!
Some of the better espresso-based drinks in Victoria. Using Monogram coffee which is probably the 2nd best roaster in Calgary after P&S. lots of indoor and outdoor seating and friendly staff.
AMAZING food. Went with my sisters for brunch and was not disappointed: had the breakfast sandwich with added bacon and caramel latte. Sandwich had delicious savory sauce which blended beautifully with the soft egg. Home baked bun buttery and warm. And the latte was perfect combination of sweetness. Had their Earl Grey tea cupcake: recommend eating with a fork as tge best way to get icing and cake. Icing was very soft and not over-sweet. Great way to enjoy brunch! Definitely coming back again.
I love Ruth and Dean! The atmosphere is cozy and welcoming, the treats are unique and decadent, and the food is delish. Best salted chocolate chip cookie and breakfast sandwich in Victoria!! Highly recommend.
Great coffee, and atmosphere..
Amazing baked goods and I do mean amazing.
We visited Ruth and Dean restaurant in Victoria because one of our foodie friends in Vancouver suggested that we try it out. We didn't think twice about trying the restaurant because our friend and her chef-husband are always finding eclectic and affordable restaurants. We were not disappointed at Ruth and Dean. We arrived mid-afternoon and were surprised by how small the restaurant is. The bakery goods, for which the restaurant is best known, were proudly and enticingly displayed in the front display case. Since our crew of three was there seeking a hearty meal, we began the mainstream event quickly. We ordered two different types of sandwiches, a couscous salad, and two bowls of celeriac soup. The sandwiches were constructed with baguette bread. Usually, I find such sandwiches too filling and difficult to chew. Not in this case. The baguette was perfectly suited to its sandwich mission, delivering the perfect Parisian taste without the jaw-tiring crust. One sandwich was prosciutto and blue cheese. The other sandwich contained pork belly, aioli, and a sweet relish. It was creative, juicy, and delicious. The couscous salad contained a symphony of savoury and sweet tastes. The vinaigrette was light and perfectly suited the leaves, baby tomatoes, feta cheese, and couscous that it covered. The celeriac soup was rich, flavourful, and hot. We finished the meal, sharing a slice of chocolate/chocolate cake. The cake was enrobed in a butter icing and did not last long on the plate. Service was attentive and the price was reasonable given the high quality of ingredients.
The worst customer service experience I have ever had. We dealt with this company for multiple years, through the pandemic, working with them when we could have just cancelled, just to be blamed for their own mistakes and terrible communication skills in the end. So happy we decided to go with someone else for our wedding cake. The only reason I will ever remember this place is because of the stain they left on the memory of our wedding planning experience. Do not trust these people with your wedding cake unless you truly do not care how it turns out. Seeing how they handle negative reviews is also very eye opening, telling the customer they are wrong and reporting any negative feedback instead trying to right their wrongs. That alone says a lot about a company. I don't want an apology, I don't want my money back , I just want people to know about how truly bad this place is.
Amazing
Best breakfast sandwich I have ever had in my life and it’s one of my favourite things to eat. :)
Great food. We had bowl of spaghetti with 3 large meatballs, caprese grilled cheese sandwich, and bowl of cauliflower, leek, potato soup.
I am obsessed with cupcakes, so it was an easy decision to have cupcakes at our wedding instead of a traditional wedding cake. Ruth and Dean put together an absolutely incredible tasting box, and from that moment I knew we had to hire them. We served a dessert in addition to the cupcakes at our wedding, but you wouldn’t have known it with how quickly the cupcakes disappeared! Everyone raved about how good they were, and they were the hit of the night! As well, I mentioned once to Ruth and Dean, several months prior to the wedding about putting berries on top, but in the craziness of wedding planning I never followed up. I was thoroughly impressed when I saw the cupcakes and they had mixed berries on top, and looked incredible! One word of advice, if you have Ruth and Dean cupcakes at your wedding, order more than you think because we had some guests take 2 and 3 cupcakes because they were so good!
Everything in this charming bistro is so, so tasty. The soups & salads at Ruth & Dean are inspired, and the desserts?? Best. Treats. Ever. Nanaimo bars & Rice Krispie squares are my fave, but the cakes are the most iconic.
Great food and staff!
Charming little cafe. The food is simple and amazingly fresh. The small menu changes frequently depending on what's in season or fresh. Even the biscuit for the sandwich is made from scratch. There are also some baked treats. Cupcakes are a must try too!
It's incredible what comes out of the tiny kitchen in this place. The passion, talent and heart of Susannah and co. fills the space and infuses into everything they make. The lunches are exceptional. Portions are generous. Treats are second to none. Cakes are the best and most beautiful in the city. And they work so damn hard. Nothing but admiration and respect. Worth the tricky parking, just grab a spot in one of the city parkades (first hour free!)
This charming place has Cedar boughs decorating for XMas. The meatloaf sandwich was tasty. Covid wise, they've put out quite a bit of outside seating, and spread out their tables. They have marked where to stand clearly on the floor. The plexiglass shield is up. However, at lunch, do not expect speed, they got a bit backlogged.
We went for lunch at their new location on Estevan Ave. and enjoyed the delicious lunches and wonderful desserts plus courteous service. One suggestion: the five of us were quite cold, as were the people at the table nearby. We think your outside door should shut properly and also you should have some heat on, especially when it’s cold and damp outside. But we shall return for the food!
This is the best cafe in Victoria and the staff is awesome.
Coffee and serving are always amazing!
The front-of-house person with the tattoo of a face on the back of her right arm was extremely rude, not just to me but to other customers who came in after. I don't care how good the food is (it's better than OK). There is no excuse for bad service. None. Ever.
Bait and switch! Huge cheese biscuits on display..perfect for making a sandwich but clerk gave me a half sized one and charged me 50 cents less for a $4 biscuit(do the math) without asking. I would have had to refund it, then get the proper sized one..I didn't have time so took it. Dry as a bone (had to spit it out) so it must have been from yesterday! Too bad... cheese biscuits are my fave so I was hoping for a new source...won't go back after this experience...
Recently got the 6 inch Earl Grey cake for our daughters birthday. The presentation is really nice but a few things we weren’t overly happy with. The cake box was too small for the cake so they lifted the lid way up and covered in Saran Wrap. A little cheesy for a very expensive cake. The edible beads on top were extremely hard. The cake was was too dry, everyone had the same comment at our party. The cake made for nice pictures but unfortunately I can’t recommend after our experIence.
I had their spaghetti & meatballs; comes with a cookie (I chose chocolate chip) which was interesting because it was sweet with a hint of sprinkled salt. The entree tasted fine but a bit on the small side for the value. Will try again on another day (the lunch menu changes daily) but upon closer inspection this place is more known for cakes which I'll have to update upon next visit.
Lunch
Simply the best bakery/cafe around! The food is exceptional and the staff are super kind and friendly. The fact that this business has survived the pandemic is a testament to the quality of service and product...and that comes from the top down!!
Not bad, but not good - especially for the cost and somewhat unfriendly staff. It's ok food but there more cons that outweigh the pros of the place. Everything is overpriced and then the counter staff asked if I wanted to tip them.. Tip them for what? My pastry to go? Conclusion - the food is forgettable but the tone and cost is not.
Had lunch here today and loved it the food was great and the service from Dean was excellent anyone visiting Victoria Vancouver Island should try their little cafe.
Really great selection of baked goods! Such a cute spot.
Strawberry lemon cake was to die for!
Take out
The food was decent, but overpriced when I went here. I also don't like the owners politics, and how spiteful they are.
We had a perfect cake for our family celebration and would recommend them to anyone.
Always love visiting Ruth & Dean for coffee, baked goods, and their delicious breakfast sandwich. It's a nice space, too, with friendly staff and good service. I've never been disappointed--except when they ran out of cinnamon buns before I got there!
Sooooo delicious. Daniela is an amazing baker!
Delicious coffee and baked treats. Has a nice little patio set up out front for people watching. An Estevan Village staple. It closes at 3pm so be sure to get there early and expect neighborhood-level prices.
Best brekky sandwich in #yyj!
i like my cafe.
Consistently delicious. Great service always
Ruth & Dean has a lovely atmosphere, friendly staff, yummy treats, and delicious coffee. I’ll definitely be coming back!
Had a veggie sandwich and soup. It was delicious!
Ruth and Dean is an odd gem in the city. All food and baked goods are absolutely fantastic.
Best Nanaimo bar I've ever had. Rich and creamy. Delicious Orange chocolate cake.
Absolutely the most beautiful cakes!! Tastiest food, and best customer service! Their bakers are beyond amazing! Gorgeous designs and above to top service!!
Great breakfast sandwich! All their pastries are also to die for. I especially loved their sticky buns.
Absolutely amazing food. The desserts have been fine tuned until they are perfect, and the savory breakfast sandwiches (the scones are flaky and moist, no misspent crumbs here) and lunch specials are some of the best dishes I have had.
Good service but two dry purchases - a scone and a blueberry muffin. Result - not on my must return to list.
Wonderful cakes, perfectly adorned. If you want to give an event a wow factor, a cake from Ruth & Dean will do certainly the trick.
Super awesome breakfast sandwich. So big I had to eat the layers separately. Made to order.
Always a great menu.
My elderly dad and myself visited Victoria from Vancouver just before the long weekend of Thanksgiving. We were originally going to take one of those red double decker bus tours from The Empress Hotel but unfortunately & fortunately they were closed between Tuesday and Thursday so we decided to just get a day pass for regular BC transit buses and took the #2 bus to tour from DT to James Bay beach then back to DT and then eventually to Oak Bay beach area. As the result, we saved $70 for both (the red double decker bus is $80 for two) and we were able to find this cute corner bakery/coffee shop, “Ruth & Dean”. It totally looks just like a country side rustic coffee shop which I like personally, and we decided to grab some drink and sit outside table on the side walk under the beautiful old huge oak tree. And I had chai latte with almond milk (lactose intolerant ????????????) and it was delish! Their baking goods looked also so good but unfortunately we were already full with lunch earlier so we saved for the next time. Their beautiful cake looked so good, the ladies ahead of me ordered a big slice of it and she said it’s very good! And I believe her. ???? The place is very spacious, nice outdoor tables and nice cozy and peaceful atmosphere all around that area. I recommend anyone who likes to have a little get away, find this little cute community with some other shops and restaurants. The gorgeous clean beach is just a few blocks down on Estevan St. It was such a nice treat for both my dad and myself to relax and refresh ourselves from living in the heart of Vancouver DT.
Come for the incredible cakes stay, for the best breakfast sandwich on Vancouver Island

Just stopped in for a quick breakfast/lunch. Ended up sitting down, having a nice americano and their breakfast sandwich. It was amazing. Maybe I was overly hungry but it really was awesome. Really fresh, and a good price too. Friendly staff.
Love, love, love Ruth and Dean. I make sure I stop by for lunch or a fresh bakery item and coffee whenever I'm in town. Friendly staff, wonderful food, and a pleasant ambiance -- could not ask for more.
Come back time and again for the breakfast sandwich! Hard not to take a coffee and treat for the road too!
Meal type
Maybe the best banana bread in town?! So much flavour and absolutely nailed the chocolate chip ratio :)
The best place hands down in Victoria for a sweet treat or a rad cake. Cannot recommend more! A must for anyone visiting or living in the area
Great food, not inexpensive but high quality
Only had a Latte but it was very good.
Near the water. Good coffee. Spacious place.
Cute little cafe with lots of sweet and a couple savory options. They bake cakes, scones, muffins, etc. on site so they always have lots of options. The slice of cake changes all the time and is the thing to try. And coffee is really good! Added a couple homemade marshmellows to mine which was the right choice. They also had canned, dry and frozen foods for purchase. Staff were great and were very on the COVID protocols. Very appreciated!

Every baked goodie I've ever tried at Ruth & Dean has been fantastic, but today I had the best muffin of my life here: moist, toothsome, with plenty of real blueberries and bold almond flavour. Can't wait til my next muffin!
I ordered a Harry Potter themed bridal shower cake for my friend here. The end result was GORGEOUS! She loved the cake, and it was delicious as well! Would not hesitate to order more custom cakes from Ruth & Dean in the future.
Ordered the Sad Box of Cake, and it was awful. The icing tasted like it came from the jar, and the cake like it came from a box. There was no flavour, it was just full of fat and just tasted awful. Wish I could get my 6$ back. Also, the sprinkles didn’t help make the whole thing batter.
Amazing local hidden gem. Try their Nanaimo bar!
Great breakfast sandwich and coffee
Service
The menu is limited which I found to make a lunch selection difficult. The treat options are plentiful which makes up for the micro food menu. Inside the restaurant there isn't much seating which could be an issue. Service and food taste is absolutely amazing.
So cute, so kind and quaint. Care and quality in everything on the menu.
One of my favourite spots in Victoria for breakfast, lunch, or coffee and a tasty treat. Highly recommend the breakfast sandwich and rice crispy square, you won't be disappointed!
4.5 Delicious, unique, and I'm looking forward to visiting again soon
Amazing food and baked goods!
Every item is a masterpiece! I can’t get enough of her Nanaimo bars and each fantastic daily soup!
the Nanaimo bars are to die for. also, their cakes and breakfast sandwiches - wow!
Service
I AM GOING TO WRITE THIS STRONGLY WORDED REVIEW! I LOVE THIS PLACE! IT IS HAS THE BEST FOOD AND COFFEE AND PASTERIES IVE EVER HAD! THE BLT IS THE LITERAL BEST BLT IVE EVER HAD IN MY 29 1/2 YEARS OF LIFE! GO THERE AND TRY IT OUT!
Amazing desserts and delicious food. I have been enjoying their seasonal salads (fall and winter).
delicious baked goods! always difficult to decide what to get????highly recommended the tasty sausage rolls with flaky pastry
Meal type
Very cute place - I love the cake stands and cookbooks lining the shelves. Our brunch was very tasty.
Their food is consistently rad, but also! I was really sad the other day and went in to get a cupcake to go, and the lady in there stapled the box specially so that it wouldn't crush the frosting and I really appreciated that. Cupcake remained immaculate (and delicious)
Amazing food. Full of flavor, fresh veggies, cooked just right. Great friendly service. I asked for the bread to be subbed with greens, they were very accommodating.
Friendly service, great coffee, creative delicious menu and reasonable prices. I highly recommend Ruth & Dean!
Good variety but expensive 7.50 for te and scone .
Very nice and clean neighborhood coffee shop. Coffee was good, service was good, tables neat and clean. Lots of outdoor space to sit as well as indoor.
We quickly googled a spot to stop for lunch while we were out biking & just the vibe in the pictures made me want to check out this gem of a place! And we were so happy we found Ruth & Dean’s! We had the BLT with salad, corn chowder, the oat & fudge bar & a mocha. ???? Deeeeelish!
My experience here was through the roof great. The staff are some of the most welcoming folks u can get in a casual dining experience. The food is amazing my favorites being the breaky sandwich and that frigging Nanaimo is insane. Best spot in the city by far!!!
Great porchetta for lunch..perfect spot to people watch downtown Victoria if you get front window
All I can say is WOW. During this COVID season, ordering a wedding cake was super stressful, but Ruth & Dean made me 5 separate cakes and they were stunning. They put so much effort into making each cakes icing texture different and embellished. The cake was delicious-I had the salted caramel vanilla and it was the best cake I’ve ever had. Every day since my wedding I have been dreaming of their cake!! I HIGHLY recommend trying it!!
Able to do delicious gluten-free cake but a little expensive. The cafe is really nice to sit and relax.

The best bakery in town! I love this place, their food is delicious and service is friendly. You have to try the baked goods!
Simply amazing. Their baked goods and cakes are awesome and their breakfast sandwich was sooo good!
I have been to this cozy spot twice now and was impressed with lunch both times. The biscuits are incredibly flaky! Sandwich meats were excellent quality, salad greens were crisp, and service was prompt. I'll be going back ????
Always fresh and delicious. My only concern is how long it takes me to choose between a sweet or savoury item, when the solution each time is to get one of each.
Delicious breakfast. Home baked breads, fresh and tasty ingredients. Great people too. Eat here, avoid the chains.
My mind was blown over the amazing breakfast sandwich. My dog loves the dog treats too.
Best brownie in the entire city. Fight me.
On 12/10/19 I emailed and asked if it would be a good time to place our order, they said yes, so I sent over some reference pictures. They gave me a quote and I asked if they could provide me with a phone number and time to call to pay our 40% non-refundable deposit on 12/12/19. They did not respond, and I emailed again on 12/18/21 asking if they would need us to come in person to pay (we live out of province), they replied to call, so I called and paid the $126 deposit. They emailed on 12/22/19 that they could deliver to Sooke (“I have checked and we definitely can do delivery to [Sooke] on your date!”) On 1/7/20 @ 9:02am they emailed and said Sooke was beyond the limits for delivery. Then on 1/7/20 @ 10:17am they said they could absolutely deliver the order to Sooke. (Confusing, but I assumed there was a communication breakdown somewhere on their end and didn’t worry about it) On 4/6/20 I emailed to change our date to 2021 with no issues, and then on 12/11/20 they emailed to confirm we would be going ahead with the wedding, I said yes. On 6/14/21 I emailed to let Susannah know we had changed our reception location and reduced our number of guests, both due to Covid restrictions (we changed from an indoor reception to an outdoor reception with less people) The change in location was still in Sooke, and was actually 15 minutes closer to Ruth and Dean than the original location. They then replied on 6/15/21 (Our wedding is on 7/25/21) saying that they can no longer offer delivery to Sooke because they laid off their drivers during Covid. They did not tell me this until I told them of the address change. In their email on 6/16/21 they said “I'm just keeping to this thread so we can find all relevant changes, etc... “ so I clearly didn’t know Susannah had deemed the thread too long to the point of charging me. I said I could pick up on the day before the wedding (since we only have very close family at our wedding and so nobody could leave on the wedding day to drive the near 2 hours it takes to go there and back to get our cake) so I asked to pick it up on the day before the wedding. When I found out I would be going to the spa with my wedding party the day before the wedding (I was not aware of this until early July) and would be in Vic on the 23rd anyway, I emailed asking if I could pick up on the 23rd instead. From the time she emailed me saying they could not deliver, I sent 4 emails, 2 of which were me simply saying thank you, and one of which was notifying her I sent the remainder balance for our order. This is what it took for Susannah to threaten to charge me admin fees for sending her emails about our wedding cake order that was already fully paid for. I understand it has been a stressful time for vendors, and our order was not a big one (it couldn’t be due to our reduced guest count due to Covid restrictions!), but it has also been hard for the rest of us trying to roll with the punches of Covid restrictions this past year and a half. I could go on about what I think of this interaction with Susannah, but all I will say is I have 3 business owners in my immediate family and they all agree that this was an extremely unprofessional and rude way to essentially take out her business related stress on a customer who was trying to figure out last minute arrangements due to their sudden inability to deliver our wedding cake. If charging customers admin fees for reading and responding to emails is how she is going to ‘recoup’ her lost wages….. this business is not going to last very much longer. P.S. my partner called Susannah this morning (because as per her email, I was not allowed to contact her anymore through there) and got the money that was refundable sent back. I do not want any apologies from Ruth and Dean, and I understand that times have been very tough. I just wanted to warn other brides that unless you know you will only have to contact Ruth and Dean once to place your order and will not require any changes at all, do not trust them with your wedding cake.
Foodie beware: EVERYTHING IS AMAZING. From the Nanaimo Bars and other sweets, to the breakfast sandwiches and delicious soups, you seriously can't go wrong. The cakes are phenomenal. I've seen amazing decoration as well and can't wait to order one for myself! Well, I've just talked myself into going there today... <3
The most amazing cupcakes I've ever tasted!
Amazing Staff! Everything is made with love, from the desserts, sandwiches and beverages. Every part of this place is perfect, will be coming here with my family and friends for many years to come. XO
I've never had anything that wasn't absolutely delicious at Ruth & Dean! Their cakes and baked goods are the best in Victoria, and their brunch and lunch menus are amazing. The restaurant in Estevan is also so beautiful, a really lovely place to eat.
Meatloaf Sandwich.

Ruth & Dean never fails with their food and baked goods, it is always delicious! Especially the earl grey cake.. I've had a slice for breakfast on multiple occasions:) Since moving to Oak Bay, it has been my go-to spot to have a coffee and sweet treat! Overall a wonderful atmosphere. Don't hesitate to give this place a try, you won't be disappointed. <3
Best breakfast sandwich in town. Everything here is so good. SO GOOD
Best cake in town. Magic food.
Exceptional cakes. The best in Victoria in my opinion.
Ruth and dean is my happy place, better than Disneyland, better than all the rest. Perfect. Every. Damn. Time. ???????????????????????????????????????????????? The stuff dreams wish they could be.
What this experience helped me learn is that chimchurri and I are not friends. I can't say that I was a fan of the mouth feel of the biscuit part of the breakfast sandwich either. I'm not sure that a gritty scone-like baking product plays a good role in it. My breakfast companion loved her breakfast sandwich though, so chaque a son gout. Most importantly, the coffee was truly awful. If you can't get drip coffee right...
Great coffee and incredible food. We had the 4-1-6 bar (coconut, pecans and chocolate) and it was delicious. The atmosphere and the staff were very nice as well. Highly recommended!
Beautiful ambience. The food is a bit overpriced, but the breakfast sandwich (at $10) is the best deal. Served on an amazing cheese scone, egg perfectly cooked, fresh hummus, avocado, and tomato. Their coffee isn't as good as some of the other local staples, but it was so nice they stayed open through COVID (take-out) and are back up and running safely. Kudos to this local shop!
The best breakfast sandwich I've ever had! The biscuit is heavenly and airy, pesto, cheese, avocado, egg.....sooooooo good! The baked goods looK amazing too but could not partake because I was too full
Tasty drinks and delicious sandwiches. Certainly a worthy successor to the previous establishment at this location. This corner lot is great for people-watching; enjoy the relaxed and quiet bustle of residents before wandering down for a walk on the beach.

Thank goodness for outdoor seating, and Ruth and Dean has 2 outdoor seating areas in these times of living with Covid 19. I had garden sandwich that was on a beautiful thick slice multi grain bread with smashed humus, carrot, red beets, and seared cauliflower. Delicious but a little wet and messy to eat, something to consider with red beets which can stain what you're wearing. All in all a Lovely spot to grad coffee/ lunch on a beautiful day right in Estevan village!
Amazing staff, so kind and approachable. They food and atmosphere are so beautifully done. I feel like you can never order the wrong thing, and I love how they frequently switch up their menu! I will never get bored of this cafe. Wish I could go there everyday!
Great cake!!
Very tasty! Diverse little menu and 2 thumbs up from all 6 of our group. Great desserts to finish off lunch too.
Not only did they create the most beautiful wedding cake, the taste was a 10/10!
DELICIOUS!! The only word needed to describe our lunch here today. Very cozy little place with good coffee and delicious food made to order. Good looking pastries as well and looking forward to a wedding cake well be having from here tomorrow.
Disappointed with the minimal selection of baked goods and the cookie I had was definitely not fresh by a long shot. Sandwich was ok, salad was excellent.
This place is truly a hidden gem downtown. Not only do they make the best cakes in town they also do a fantastic lunch service. I’m always blown away by the quality and creativity in their food. I’m especially impressed by their salads. I am not a salad guy but damn they do them well. Don’t skip dessert you’ll regret it and people will start to talk.
Got a cake here recently and have to say it was as delicious as it looked! Told the staff to channel their inner Liberace and so they did! So amazing! Thank you so much!
Coffee was average, pastries were far too sweet, and heavy. Saw cook in back pulling out lots of produce from plastic bags that looked pre prepared and the cheese too so not fresh.
I got my wedding cake from Ruth & Dean and it was the best carrot cake ever! When my husband and I tasted our wedding cake, our eyes literally got ten times bigger. We are very glad we got our wedding cake from them :)
Delicious and easy. One of the best place to go for lunch. Their cakes are amazing!
Enjoyed having a lunch there. The salads are good!

i hired Ruth & Dean for my wedding cake and it was delicious; not too sweet and tastefully decorated. I am impressed with their service and highly recommend them.
Went by Ruth and Dean the other day to get a treat for myself, first of all the lady at the counter was wonderful! So helpful, she recommended the Dave's cake cupcake and said it was her favourite. Long story shot it is now my favourite too. Best cake and bake shop in Victoria HANDS DOWN.
The ingredients were fresh. Though I have to say $18 was high for the plain combination. They change menu everyday. Wish I would catch some creative combination the next time!

Best breakfast sandwich in the city. Also the treats are divine!!
Ruth and Dean is my GO-TO stop here in Victoria when I am riding my bike around town. Fantastic staff (esp. D), and amazing food. Highly Recommended!
Man oh man where to begin!! The pastries and surprise delights in the case are always fresh and consistent. Coffee. Period. The best I have ever had in any form. With Monogram beans and the care that goes into making each cup is so appreciated. The menu for breakfast and lunch holds onto its prize meals (aka the breakfast sandwich, chicken noodle soup, vegan sandwich and more) are always there to hug you, and Rudy's always cheffing up new recipes to enjoy. There is so much creativity and love in this place. Please stop by for big smiles, tasty nums, and sweet treats to keep you jazzed all day. Much love Rudy! Keep on doing what you do best.
Always great! Local place doing really good food and coffee. Highly recommend
Beautiful cakes, delicious food and the best staff. What's not to love about this fabulous little joint!
I would rate Ruth & Dean with 6 stars if I could. I had an incredible grilled cheese and roasted red pepper soup today. It’s a shame we don’t live in Victoria so I could come back again soon.
Service
Best cinnamon buns, and fantastic breakfast options. Needed it this morning more than a lot of days, and am glad they had what I needed!
I ordered a chocolate cake for a special birthday and it didn't disappoint. The process of ordering was really simple and staff was great over the phone. The cake had just the right amount of design and tasted delicious. Rarely do we finish an entire cake before it goes stale. We did not struggle with this one!
Best spot to grab yummy pastries, food, and coffee! Their chocolate banana bread is to die for, and they have really fun sandwiches!!! Also has great staff????
I ordered their mushroom Mac and cheese and earl grey cake. Both were really good! The service was also very friendly, they really made sure we were happy with our orders. It's a lovely littl spot for lunch and dessert!
Not helpful nor are they professional about ordering a cake. Very disappointing!
Best cake in the city
I've only tried the breakfast sandwich so far, but it was amazing! The savory house biscuit it is made with is so good - warm, buttery, flakey and full of herbs and flavour - almost more like a pastry than a scone. There wasn't much range in the baked treats when I visited and they didn't look overly exciting, but I would go back again and again for that incredible breakfast sandwich! They also have a small selection of other daily specials for breakfast and lunch.
Fantastic helpful and friendly staff who made excellent recommendations, but I don't think you could make a bad choice at this lovely little spot. Thank you!
This is my favourite cafe for excellent lattes in real crockery. Yesterday, Saturday, was their cinnamon buns morning, the best I have ever tasted. I love their cakes...and ...their soups are divine. I have soup there for lunch all the time, it comes with a toasted buttered baguette. Perfect. Socially distanced seating feels safe; staff is friendly, excellent about sanitizing. I like to sit outside under a beautiful old tree with chattering ravens. Makes my morning.
Small space, friendly staff. Cup of beet & apple soup was delicious.
Just picked up 6 cupcakes. What artistry!
Brunch
Great food, excellent coffee and wonderful baristas. ????
I asked on a FB wedding group who makes the best cakes in Victoria and several people answered Ruth & Dean. Wow oh wow, were they ever right! The icing was light and not too sweet. The taste of the cake was one of the best I’ve ever had. My birthday boy was so happy. Yay delicious cakes!
Had their breakfast sandwich. Very yummy. Blueberry muffin was good. Coffee was good. Free refills! Friendly staff. A bit pricey.
A good strong Americano and a pretty much perfect slice of berry-topped upside down cake made for a flawless start to this low gray Victoria spring morning. Thank you R&D..you always seem to get it just right.
