Hide + Seek has good intentions with hit or miss implementation. The hits are the wide range of whole bean roasters they sell, the design of the cafe, the food options, and their manual lever espresso machine - a rare and unique piece of equipment for a modern cafe. The misses relate to the inconsistency of their coffee, particularly their espresso. On one or two occasions I’ve had really good shots there, both as straight espresso and a latte. Unfortunately, both my wife and I have had really poor, under extracted, sour shots. I watch cafe bar staff carefully, and on the occasions that we’ve had unsatisfactory coffee from here, they appear not to be attentive to important nuances in puck preparation and workflow, particularly when I can clearly see that shots are blonding prematurely (resulting in nasty sour shots). I strongly recommend that management and owners further strive to provide ongoing training to bar staff and elevate the quality of their cafe from “ok” to awesome.

I discovered this place while working in the area recently, and now make the drive out just to pick up a coffee! I really enjoy the hemp milk iced lattes. Fair price and a great little selection of pasties / baked goods to choose from. The cafe is a little bit small though, with limited seating given how busy it always seems to be! Would definitely recommend checking it out before defaulting to the Starbucks across the street. You'll be much happier with the service, and you'll be supporting local business.

One of my favorite places in Victoria for a delicious coffee. The baristas are all very skilled. The atmosphere is wonderful, a blend of mid century modern and classic white. Wonderful artwork, always playing the best music. A great selection of lesser known roasters. Oh and the housemade pop tarts are to die for, I actually think about them way too much. If you go on a Sunday they do feature waffles. My favorite part is that Cortados / Gibraltars are done in the proper glass, a rarity in this city. If you are in Oak bay go here you won't regret it.

Hide + Seek is hands down the best cafe and coffee shop in Victoria and on all of Vancouver Island! We stumbled upon Hide + Seek on a visit to the Island, about 3 months before we officially moved to Victoria from Toronto 3 years ago. Since day one, my Husband and I have been made to welcome every single visit. We’ve loved watching the team grow and seeing Jessie and Jamie develop their concept over time. As an Australian, I’m incredibly picky about my coffee, and so finding a place that can consistently make a tasty and proper Flat White is a huge win. Their brew bar is also phenomenal, with their daily rotating options for Pour Overs. I also love that they support multiple roasters, not only local but also small and unique companies such as Floozy, an all Female created and run roastery. Despite the fact that we live in the centre of Downtown Victoria, and are surrounded by multiple Cafes and Coffee Shops we still journey to Hide + Seek in Oak Bay every Saturday and Sunday for our Coffee and Breakfast, and have done so since we moved here. Not only because of the phenomenal coffee program, the hand made and locally sourced baked goods - but also because of the safe, happy and friendly environment the team have created. Keep up the awesome work guys! We love what you do and what you represent. Seeing Victoria grow with more establishments like yours, fills me with confidence and excitement for the future of our City!

As anyone can tell by the number of photographs I post on Instagram, I freaking love Hide + Seek’s Waffle Sunday. Every week I look forward to Saturday night when they post their menu on Instagram sharing what will be the next morning’s feature waffle. If you’ve been to Hide + Seek’s Waffle Sunday before, you know how busy this spot can be. As this is a cozy coffee shop, I prefer to arrive right as their doors open at 10am so I can find a spot to sit, people watch and (most importantly) waffle-eat. If you’re a regular (or if you’ve seen the signs), you will also know that they have a no laptop policy on Sundays (only) from 10am-1pm. This may be a deal breaker for some patrons but there are SO many places in Victoria to set up shop with your laptop but not many places that serve such deliciously creative waffles as Hide + Seek (I still dream of their Yuzu waffle????????). I’m thankful they institute this short-term policy as it can be hard to find a spot to sit and enjoy your waffle if there’s a sea of tables occupied by laptops. Lastly, I want to mention the staff at Hide + Seek as they are always so friendly and inviting. Every time I visit I feel treated like a regular they know by name (even though I’m sure they likely don’t remember me!). The atmosphere they’ve created in their shop is so special and so inclusive. If you haven’t had the pleasure of enjoying Waffle Sunday (what are you waiting for?!) please do check Hide + Seek out soon! I also highly recommend their Cardamom Tea Latte. I believe it’s only served in the fall months but it is worth. every. sip. (and the wait).

This is as my daughter puts it, “Mommy’s favourite coffee shop” and she is not wrong. Jesse and Jamie have something really special here. Not only an incredibly inviting space with excellent music playing at all times (and an instagram page for that music @cafecollection) they have SERIOUSLY GOOD COFFEE! In a town that is quickly becoming known for some damn fine coffee, they have managed to make relationships with roasters you can’t find anywhere else in the city! (Camber, Bespoke, Monogram etc.). They are committed to excellent service, product, and experience. The staff are all knowledgeable and friendly. They always make an effort to get to know us and I’m not even kidding, one day when it was slow Jamie and Jesse made me coffee and then played with my toddler to give me a few minutes rest! They’ve even delivered coffee to my car when I was parked out front with a sleeping infant. Where else does this happen?! Bi-weekly knit nights, bi-weekly knitting classes, origin book club, Promotion of local events, and other great community involvement. You will be hard pressed to find a place that cares more about this stuff than Hide + Seek. Waffle Sunday’s are awesome and very busy, they are active on Instagram so it is very easy to see what is happening at the store, and they have a great selection of tiny human toys and story books as well as other cool things to read and art to admire. This place will always be top of my list to recommend when visiting Victoria. Not far from the ocean and completely worth the trip to Oak Bay for!

A pleasant surprise in Oak Bay. I splurged on a pour over and can honestly say it’s one of the best coffees I’ve had in several years. It made me feel inadequate in my own home brewing abilities! The staff were very friendly too on the Sunday we visited. I’ll be back!!

Hide and Seek is one of my favourite places to hang out when I'm home in Victoria. They have the best coffee, great snacks and are unbelievably welcoming and kind when I set up to study in the corner. Like any reasonable person who is cognizant of the fact that this coffee shop caters to many, many other people who love it too, I try to remain aware of how much space I am taking up, but in general it's never an issue. Yes, they limit computer use for literally 3 hours on Sundays, but I can safely say I have had 0 issues using my computer at Hide and Seek anytime outside of that period. Its a great spot and anyone who loves coffee should check it out!

Hide and Seek has a great selection of warm drinks, not just coffee, literally all of the drinks I’ve had have been top quality, and the chocolate chip cookies are some of the best I’ve had in Victoria. One of our favourite places in Victoria. The owners are super friendly and talented baristas! Love their Fairfield location (has a cute outdoor seating space).

I was visiting in Victoria and went here to get an Americano and buy some beans and a snack with my wife. The staff were super nice and knowledgeable, helped me pick out beans based on what I explained I like, our coffees were awesome and the baked good were amazing! The staff here also gave us great tips on good brunch locations! Thanks, we will be back!

My rating is not based on the coffee or the food as it's all really great, but the service I received today. It was my first time to this cafe that I had heard such great things about. I came in for the purpose of studying and was pushed out. I was sitting at my table with my textbooks and stuff out and was told to leave for an elderly person in a wheelchair. That part is not the problem, I just really disliked how I was singled and was not asked if it would be okay if I had to move. There was a table beside me with two people who would have been just as easy to move. I wish the guy working there had simply asked both tables if one of us would be okay with moving. He pointed me over to the window ledge which was narrower then my books. Before i agreed he had already started putting the lady's things down; i ended up having to pack my things up in front of the door. I know I looked very inconvenienced to the guy. You let a customer leave unhappy and that ruins the overall experience. Wish I could like this place but they don't know hospitality.

I’ve tried 3 times and every time my coffee tastes so awful, I take 2 or 3 sips and then dump it out. Would love to support a local business but I can’t go here until they change coffee.

November 21st. I dropped in to try out the new coffee shop. The decor is lovely. I loved the flooring which was dramatic. The owner took the time to talk about the flooring and how they did it. It had great coffee which I think is roasted at "Fantastico" The service was cheerful, not rushed and the cups the coffee was served in were nice. There were two children in at the time and there was a little basket of blocks keeping one child very interested. It was spacious, tasteful and the artwork was well selected to enhance the shop. It was a very pleasant experience and so I am meeting a friend on Monday to meet at the "Hide and Seek" and acquaint the friend with the new coffee shop. I liked the nice tone of white and the copper pipe and the copper on the light fixtures as well.

I first found out about Hide + Seek through Sprudge's Victoria coffee guide and further inquired about it through my coffee connoisseur friends. Although I arrived a little late for waffles on a Sunday, I was certainly impressed by the coffee served. Upon entering the shop, I was intrigued by their bean offerings and aesthetics and most notably that they use lever machines. I tried their featured espresso and a pour over from Cut Coffee. Taste is subjective from person to person, but I was very satisfied by the aroma and tastes. Further to add is the pleasant conversation I had with the barista, Kelly, about beans. It's always great to see a shop which has personable staff who enjoy the process of making and tasting coffee as much as I do.

We got a Pop tart, a sausage roll, and a citrus rose iced tea latte . The Pop tart was large in size but had barely any filling just a thin film of jam flavor. It was very bready and dry. The sausage roll was really small and extremely salty I needed a drink after it was that salty. The drink was pleasant but it wasn't the flavour advertised - it had no citrus flavour. Kind of a very disappointing experience. The menu options for snacks was also extremely small as were their portions.
