Best baked goods on the Cabot trail

Really nice little stop on the way to Ingonish. They have good coffee & tea, free wifi and lots of seating including an outdoor patio with wonderful views. Only 4 stars because they didn't have much in the way of a variety of options, and not much for people with special diets. My wife WAS able to get a delicious slice of gluten free cake, but I was hoping for a healthier snack like nuts or some protein. They have an innovative weather invention here called the weather stone which is 100% accurate. They need to take that thing in dragons den. PS, there's a secret stash of stevia behind the counter that belongs to one of the employees.

Kay Murphy

A beautiful scenic spot to stop for a tea and scones or sandwiches. We had smoked meat panini and snow crab sandwiches. Awesome ????

Gaetan Marchand

Nice place to stop for breafest before riding cabot trail, nice staff. Good seating place with bay view.

Mario Muñiz

One of the few places open in October on the Cabot Trail. We had breakfast there twice. Good food at a great price. The view from the patio is lovely and they have pastries and sweets to take away that were really nice too.

Rob Hiscock

Beautiful location. The baked goods are fantastic.

Scott Kember

Really good coffee and food but seriously, how does a small clucking cup of of coffee in a dine-in mug cost $2.75 plus tip??? Are you kidding me? Is there really a need to gouge everyone that goes by? Despite the good food, I couldn't help but feel like I got ripped off.

Cluny Nichols

It was an ok place to eat, nothing special

Matt Hunter

Hands down the best butter tarts on earth. Seriously. And the sandwiches are quite good too. Every hiking trip into the highlands includes a stop here (during the season they're open, our winter hiking typically includes crying as we pass by). A hidden gem - love it.

Eric Lefebvre

Had coffee. Their latte was made by machine with powder. So pretty ordinary

Justin Miller

Try the tarts! Arguably, the best I've ever tasted. Grab a dozen and take them home.

angus cormack

From the first bite of the Pecan Butter Tart (supposed to be desert, but I couldn't wait) we knew it was going to be a great lunch. I had the chicken paniei my wife the king crab sandwich and we both enjoyed the broccoli cheese soup. Both were great sandwiches. We had a butter tart and a blueberry scone to finish it off. Absolutely top notch on all the dishes.

shauna winters

If you want home baked, home cooked here is the place. You won't be disappointed. The staff is so nice and friendly...I can't say which dessert is my favourite until I try them all.

I am lucky that I stopped to check the place out. Wonderful breakfast and awesome service. On a good day there is a wonderful patio to enjoy your food and the great view. The "Clucking Bagel", multigrain, was delicious and the fruit salad too. Coffee was nice and they were keep coming for refills! Perfect start of the day ! Thank you for your hospitality.

Colin Fisher

Home made feel to the breakfast that was well enjoyed by our party of ten. The treats were also very good, particularly the pastries.

Shannon

Delightful little cafe filled with chicken kitschery. I never imagined you could fill a plzce with so much kickknacks without making it feel cluttered in the least! It put a smile on my face! Coffee was very good and staff was friendly!

Arthur Ma

Popular stop. Yummy cinnamon buns and great coffee.

Ketan Chhatwani

Surprisingly good food

Gregory Merchel

Fabulous Cinnamon rolls and wonderful deck with a view!

J P

I know this place gets a lot of great reviews, obviously from people who don't know any better. The problem with this place is attention to detail and prices. My lobster sandwich, on Wonder bread...really???? White wonder bread....come on! Also charging extra for a non alcoholic drink with a meal is ridiculous, just include it. I dont mind paying for a decent meal, you can see some of my other reviews.....just dont make me feel like I'm getting ripped of. Decent food(Wonder bread aside) but a bit of a clucking rip off because of execution.

MISYYZ

What a great place to stop. Service and food quality was top notch. Place is very clean and the bakery selection is wonderful. A must stop on the Cabot trial.

Peter Paolucci

Love the renovations. Simple menu with great food. Desserts are also excellent. So many choices.

Kathleen Hughes

This is a cute and quaint sandwich shop that is nicely decorated and with fantastic views of the water. We stopped in for lunch and had roast turkey and roast beef sandwiches plus a peanut butter chocolate cheesecake for dessert. The serving staff were great, the service was fast. The sandwiches were simple but delicious. A perfect nice light lunch if you are getting sick of haddock and fries.

Hameed Bhatti

Food was good and prices were reasonable. Service was also good and the location was perfect as it was on the Cabot trail itself.

James Hawley

Jan Vickers

Awesome place, great staff, coffee, soups, desserts ... not to miss ????

Savraj Sahota

Amazing food and amazing people make an amazing time. The food at this bakery is absolutely delicious. Anything you order is sure to please you. On top of that, the pies are home made by a baker that comes in at 3AM. Their hard work pays off with delicious meals and desserts. The staff and atmosphere at this restaurant is just surreal. It is exactly like those shops you see in the movies, but in real life. If you are doing the Cape Breton drive, this has to be one of your stops.

Hughie MacNeil

Very few places know what good food is supposed to taste like. I suggest that they first send their chefs here for a taste of what food is supposed to be. Please keep up the good work and don't change a thing!

Jason Homan (The Happy & Helpful Show)

Always nice to drive down to Clucking Hen for lunch. Great views, nice people, good food.

A PERFECT TOUCH Kim Daines

Donny and Melody were life savers. Not only did they rescue me from running out of gas but the chowder , cappuccino, and butter tart was the best lunch we have had since arriving in Nova Scotia! Thankyou again, we will be back. Regards, Kim

Danielle E

Fast service, even when overwhelmed by Cabot Trail Relay participants! Breakfast was great, and so we're the baked goods.

Courtney Morse Rao

Yummy homemade bread! Friendly staff and good service.

Bikram Singh

Date crunch to die for, nice vistas.

Brendan Sullivan

While trying to finish are particularly long cycling day on the Cabot trail my friends and I decided to stop at the Clucking Hen. We arrived rather late and the shop was minutes from closing but the staff was kind enough to let us and and still serve us. We were also greeted by another cyclist that we had been talking with on the trail that had also decided to stop and eat here. I opted to get the clam chowder, which i cant say that I have ever had a better bowl before. This was perfectly filling, and had an amazing taste. Was also very nice to have a warm meal on a cold day. The next day we returned for breakfast, which was just as amazing as dinner had been. Would recommend stopping in and grabbing some of their backed goods.

Ben Harvie

Great food

Lauren Schroeder

Stopped here for breakfast, the place was pretty busy, service was slow. After our food arrived, we weren't asked if we wanted more coffee or how our food was. (It was only okay) Wasn't super impressed.

Lesli Moore

Stopped on here while on our way to the Cabot trail. Excellent staff and coffee. Butter tarts a must to try!

Sarah Hamilton

We had lunch which was great. The ginger spice cake for dessert was the memorable part though.

Liverworst

My family and I visited on a trip from Toronto almost five years ago. It was our favourite place to get breakfast and we did so for the week we were in the area. I still think about this place from time to time and I remember their bagels and cozy family friendly environment fondly. I will deffo come back one day, hopefully soon.

Kyle A

My girlfriend and I went there for Dinner on a raining day. I had the hot turkey dinner and it was AMAZING! We also went for Breakfast the next day and it was really good as well.

Paul McCloskey

Having a tough day cycling the Cabot Trail, so stopped for a break at the Clucking Hen. Really friendly staff. We enjoyed a brewsky or two on the back patio and took our time. Finally succumbed to buying a desert- which was oh so decadent and delicious. An absolute must for a stop.

We stopped here on a whim while visiting CB. One of the best lattes I have ever had. And the oat cakes were amazing!! Worth the visit.

Braydon Hunter

This is probably the best place in the highlands for all around food. Great meals, insane desserts and butter tarts that are probably the best things I've ever eaten. Seriously you have to come here just to get butter tarts (but hey, might as well get lunch too)

Louise McLeod

What a find! We started off early from Baddeck and this was an excellent place to stop for breakfast. Delicious. And to top it off we were able to stock up on delicious fresh baked items. I recommend doubling how many chocolate chip.cookie you think you want, because once you start one you are going to want another!!

Norbert Aschenbrenner

That was a surprise. We stopped for a café and had also wonderful cakes. The people are very friendly. The café itself is very nice and hen-like decorated.

Naoko Fujimaki

Beautiful setting with nice size patio with the view of the water. Nice and strong espresso shots, surprisingly tasty sandwiches and delicious chocolate croissant.

Bi L

What a delicious stop for a late lunch on our Cabot trail journey! We went here later on in the afternoon in mid-Sept and we were the only guests here for a while. Their bakery display were sold out of many options (as expected this late in the day), but after reading previous reviews on the cookies, we swooped up the last remaining 4 cookies and they were as good as I had hoped! Chewy, soft, full of flavour, and basically to die for. Definitely grab a few more than you think you’d eat! Their meringue pie was also very delicious. Off their lunch menu, we ordered the snow crab sandwich on porridge bread (highly recommend trying the porridge bread!!), seafood chowder and fish & chips (not pictured). Everything was extremely tasty and the service was great. Not to mention their patio view is pure tranquility. I cannot recommend this place enough!

JoAnn Thompson

The food is great as is the service. A good place to pull over for something quick to est

A.S. Beaumarchais

Food is excellent, staff is very friendly, waiting time is very short and overall service is great. However, prices are less friendly compared to the quantity of food you get (and I am not even talking about their lobster), ie, their sides. But since everything is homemade, I would its worth the price. Would be great though if for their seasonal prices, they could give a price range. Great place to stop by if you want to eat and enjoy the nice view.

Ann Harrison

We came here years ago it was so nice , staff was so friendly so we thought we would come back because the first experience was great. Wow !! What a difference will never go back again .

This is a MUST STOP for any trip to Ingonish or around the Cabot Trail. Amazing staff, incredibly friendly and always go above and beyond when I visit. The baked goods, especially the cookies are always delicious. If you have the time I definitely recommend stopping for a meal but if not buy a snack and some sweets to go

Stephen Ioannou

Great meal and very fast service. The best place to stop on the cabot trail for lunch and snacks

Helen Morrison

I was disappointed...our lobster sandwiches were very good but my husband's chowder was cold and tasted odd...we thought there was poultry seasoning in it...just odd...that we can deal with...but...we asked to sit outside..beautiful day..the young woman showed us to a bar style table for 2 with 2 stools.. I told her I couldn't sit on stools as I have hip and back pain...I pointed to a table with 4 chairs and she said no sorry I cant sit you at a 4 seater...we then agreed to sit inside...within 5 minutes the 2 tables with four chairs on the deck were seated....each table only had 2 people at it...it was not a nice experience..we have frequented the Clucking Hen many times and have never had a bad experience..service needs to improve...maybe just a bad day!

Christina Vandervlist

Delicious chowder and tasty home-baked treats, served cheerfully in a low-key, casual dining space by cheerful staff. The views are nearly as delicious as the chowder!

We are from Oklahoma and were driving the Cabot Trail among other attractions in Cape Breton, Nova Scotia and New Brunswick. We had the Clucking Hen recommended to us by the Visitor Center in Beddeck. It sounds a little absurd but the Clucking Hen was one of the highlights of our 8 day trip. The blueberry pie was absolutely phenomenal and I wish we could have tried more items as everything looked delicious. This is a great stop and not to be missed. I wish they had home delivery to OK!

Bart R

Waited over 35 minutes for my take out order after being told the order will take 15 minutes. We asked for gluten free and dairy free toast and it came with butter on it.

My husband and I recently visited Cape Breton and we were disappointed with "The Clucking Hen" Places to eat were few and far between and so we decided to call ahead...We called from Tim Hortons in Beddeck @ 5ish to check on what time they were open until...The Clucking Hen indicated they were open until 7 pm...We arrived @ 6:10 and there were people dining on their patio...we went in...only to be greeted by someone telling us they were closed...I was in awe ! We had just called...she said they decided to close early because it was HOT.! Really ! It is summer...It is HOT ! There was no where else within 30- 45 minutes to eat ! NOT IMPRESSED ! BAD on you ! POOR POOR POOR Customer Service! NOT IMPRESSED !

The lobster stew was delicious! I was not sure what to expect with this just being a small spot off of the Cabot trail, however I was pleasantly surprised. The staff were incredibly friendly and made you feel right at home. Followed up the meal with a delectable homemade Nanaimo bar that was so good I'm tempted to make the drive from Toronto just to buy more. Definitely recommend for travellers on the Cabot Trail looking for a bite to eat.

Wonderful staff! Full breakfast menu but we munched on some oatcakes. BEST oatcakes ever - better even than we had in the Orkneys! You really need to treat yourself to a stop here.

Dan Roswell

Service was fast and friendly, food was delicious and reasonably priced. Great views as well!

Frozen blueberries in the oatmeal? $4 for 35¢ worth of oatmeal could have fresh blueberries. WiFi did not work and as recommended by rental property owner so... roaming charges. Overpriced. ~ response: Maybe your staff should have offered more than "well, my phone is working". If I said the toilet was overflowing, I will bet someone would have checked into it... as far as the food... Customer's shouldn't have to ask. Fresh food should be served without questions coming up or note it in your menu to avoid confusion. Just my opinion.

Stopped in quick for a coffee and sweet treat. We had lattes which were fine( they are machine made). And then had a butter tart and croissant. Both good! Nice little place to stop and the staff were very friendly

Best food and Best breakfast in General. Great stop if you’re doing the Cabot Trail. Amazing hospitality and very friendly staff members. Also loved all the funny signs around the cafe. A bit busy and crowded when we visited but still offered a great atmosphere. Highly recommended local food.
