There is nothing fancy about the almost austere window display of cookie trays lined with baked goods as well as the small grouping of refrigerated cases, but there is something refreshing about just being greeted with sweet treats in all their raw simplicity. One thing which is nice is that they seem to have regular specials, so you can get stuff at really good prices. The second thing is that they have a nice selection of baked goods that taste really good.... -- "Mimi's Cake Tour"

Delicious and suspiciously affordable. I have no idea how they have a profit given the amazingly low prices but as long as I can get a dozen cinnamon buns for less than a dollar each, I'm happy, :D

Yummy cookies. Friendly staff. Good price. Easy to get there using public transit. I ordered 50 sugar cookies for a cookie decoration activity at work. I picked them up the day before, and the next day they were still fresh and delicious. Every one paid compliments.

Their Eccles Cakes are the most delicious I have ever eaten. Their jelly donuts are excellent. I am very glad that I do not live within a few square blocks of Monarch Bakery because I would eat their baked goods all day long.

Very affordable prices, wide variety of cookies and pies. The texture of their baked goods is generally good - light and airy with no soggy bottom for pastries, and light and crisp for the cookies. However, do not expect buttery flavour from their baked goods...pretty sure they use other fats for their baking.

Meh.....donuts and bread are pretty good but I doubt they make their own pastries. They have a commercial taste and appearance to them. Horrible pies, the filling is definitely out of a can. The display cases are very dirty and have been for months!

The custard filled doghnut only had one bite of actual custard in it. The rest was just regular doghnut. Bought another cream filled thing like a conolli but crunchy and there was cream at either end but nothing in the middle. Not sure if they are supposed to be like that. I bought a few other things that were quite tasty and the doghnut itself was good, just light on filling.

This place has seen far better days. The baked goods are old school, but mediocre, and the shop looks run down and staffed by a girl who seems permanently confused. I suggest you hop across the road to Nickels Bakery, which is also old school, but in a whole other league with regard to quality.

they never pick up phone and mailbox is always full you cannot preorder or order is incorrect ,they do have good pastries and other if you can catch them in (Rarely) to bad as used to be very good

Was here week if Xmas. for their mincemeat tarts, gingerbread, shortbread, and sugar cookies. I didn’t get to our baking and loaded up here. Got a couple dozen! We go to our favourite bakeries all over town and this one has some of the best prices. The kid loves the cookies, but we came specifically for the mincemeat tarts, sausage rolls, and individual beef pies. Was not disappointed. Fresh, flaky, moist and full of flavour. Only 2 customers in the store at a time, so felt quite safe. It’s not fancy, new or colourful. Pretty basic storefront, and the baked products are ok’d school bakery items, but they are good, plentiful, and well priced. If you want fancier cakes, or desserts items, you’ll need to go elsewhere.

I bought 4 "eccles cakes" November 17th, 2020. They were flat square pieces of puff pastry with a smear of raspberry jelly in the middle. They tasted flavorless, dry, and old. No raspberry taste at all and a feeling of eating a mouth full of tissue paper instead of puff pastry.. We threw them out. The eccles cakes I know are filled with a sweet black current, candied fruit peel, and sometimes grated orange or lemon zest filling surrounded in a flaky, puff pastry, usually formed into a round shape with vents cut in the top and dusted with sugar. Really a marvelous creation when done properly. We were very disappointed with Monarch Bakery's idea of an eccles cake. You'd think with a name containing the word "monarch" they'd know how to make this pastry from Northern England and only serve it when fresh!
