Staff is nice, but they don’t stock enough cooling items for pets. Nanaimo is a hot city in the summer and there needs to be more cooling jackets, mats, etc. stocked. Their covid practices are really good though, and most of the staff are really excited to help solve any issues you have. I have a picky eater and one staff member helped me find 3 different chicken-free food boosters/toppers (allergy), which is tricky.

Large store that is very pet friendly. The stock for cat toys needed restocking as did a few other items but in general I find whatever I am looking for. Recently adopted my kitten from their rescue adoption center and they were fantastic.

Terrible place for grooming. I had always gone to the one in Grande Prairie where I used to live, but in Medicine Hat there is no way I will ever go back. There is better places in town for customer service and especially grooming. Don't waste your time. I had to drive across town early in the morning and they had requested the vaccination booklet which I understand so I brought it with me. My dog had all the necessary vaccine and by the end of this year he will be due to get the rabies shot since it's recommended every 3 years. Mine had his last one in 2015 and we are in 2018. The guy refused to see my dog since it wasn't recent enough for him. I have an adult dog, 5 lbs that doesn't bite nor is in contact with other dogs. I've always had my dog groomed with no problem elsewhere in town and in other provinces. First time I come across that requirement and they could have told me over the phone that they wanted it done within the last 2 years instead of having me get up at 6 am and drive 20 min to waste my time. That goes to show me that if you are sooo afraid to groom an adult 5 lbs dog without getting bitten by him you must be terrible at your job. It's unfortunate that I'll have to wait longer to get an appointment elsewhere since I have allergies and can't wash my dog by myself. I usually bring him almost every month to a pet groomer in order to keep my allergies under control. I shouldn't have rushed to go to the first available place. I learned my lesson.

i went in looking for a small guppy for my 4 gallon tank. what i got was rude service and disappointing selection. i waited for over 15 mins for service so i finally went up to the counter to ask for help but when i told the lady that i wanted a guppy for my 4 gall tank she replied by saying "you cant put this fish in a tank smaller than 10 gallons" so i moved on by asking well what can i put in my tank, she said that the only thing that could be put in there was sold out. She was also very rude and unprofessional. i'm quite disappointed

Extremely disappointed. First of all a container of 50 superworms is $7 at PetSmart whereas at Petland it's $8 for 100 superworms. When I got home there were only 7 live superworms in the container and about 10 ish half-eaten ones. I went to the store the next day and they wouldn't refund me my money or at the very least give me a new container of superworms. I have a feeling this isn't the first time they've ripped off their customers. Edited to add everytime I'm in this store it is very difficult to find any staff for assistance and it's always a pretty hefty line at the till. I can never visit this store hoping for it to be a pleasant and quick shopping experience.

Calm, welcoming environment. I find it is very open for one of the smallest petsmarts on the Island. Most of the staff are absolutely wonderful to talk to and ask questions. Lots variety of products and animals. The only thing I DO NOT agree with is how they care for their bettas, they are not put in a proper tank system, nor are they quarantined. I really do wish that petsmart would have a proper place and environment to keep the fish, as they do not look their best when in the cups.

Took my dog Missy there today to get groomed. She got a bath and blow-dry.. the gal suggested the "chi" treatment for her very dry skin (we just moved from BC and it's very dry here!) She smells absolutely fabulous.. and is sooo soft. It was definitely worth the extra 25 dollars. I also have never received a better nail trimming in my life! Way to go PetSmart and Hunter who did the grooming seevice. I will be back soon!!

We've used the petsmart groomers in Langford and love them. We recently moved to Port Alberni and couldn't find a groomer willing to take our 6 month old bernadoodle rescue puppy. So I called the Petsmart groomers in Nanaimo. Tgey took her the next day. Elsa was fantastic with our pup Zoe. I can't say enough positive things about Petsmart groomers. I highly recommend them

Phone to confirm and again no answer other than a recorded message stating no stock checks available. Drive an hour again (this time for other stores also) again zero stock. Get it together! My last visit to petsmart.

One of two places in town that sells insects (gross!). Them gross insects are what make our beloved reptiles gorgeous and healthy. Petsmart has HORNWORMS They aint cheap, but they are pure protein, fat, so much yoyr rep never gets If they are suggested for your friend to try then dont cheap out and pay for the big green spiky hellspawn-your reptile(s) will love it!* Hornworms have a 'foot' much like catapillars and millions of them things. The 'foot' is not their many feet-the name was stolen from marine biology. It is a part on their butt that anchors them HARD they will grab onto paper and gecko faces. Hand feed accordingly. Also dont let them bite your smaller reptiles, they might never eat them again from fear of the hellworms. Ask PetSmart about them, i can vouch they are one of very few providing the food for our best coldblooded buddies... PetSmart rocks. The manager is da best.

Staff are very helpful. I bought a cage for my cat there last week for a long car ride. He got out of it in 30 seconds at the most. He just pushed right through the metal gate and bent it out of his way. If not for that, I would rate them a 5. I am gone from the province now with my cat. So I paid 60 bucks for a cage that didn't work as a cage. He got out and was lost for 17 hours!! 17 hours adds a huge Chunk to our 4 day journey.

I am being very frank. This is an awesome store. But owners/ managers do not hire / have adequate staff if they are going to be open in the evenings. During the daytime no problems. After 6 the place is generally staffed by 2 folks. If it is a all busy they are both doing check-out. Shop lifting is happening in front of my eyes. No floor staff to help customers. This stroke has a lot of inventory ( ie fish and reptiles that are not self serve. ) So if you want anything from those area forget it. Plus the line ups at checkout exceed most customers patience level. They walk out with their unpaid merchandise. We all pay when shop lifting occurs .. wake up owners.

They trimmed & filed his nails nice & short just as perfect as the Vet. Then, they placed the cutest scarf around his neck! The funniest part was when my tiny Harmony put up his front paws as if praying for at least 2 mins, LOL! Bravo ladies!!! We'll return!

Went into te store today wanting a fish, was unaware that I have to be 18 to purchase a fish. I waited for over an hour to be told that I wasn't able to buy it. There are no signs or anything that lets you know that you have to be a certian age, the staff completely ignore my questions and the one supervisor was completely rude to myself as well as my younger siblings. Would expect a little more respect from a supervisor to a customer that is unaware of policy's and to young children. Not impressed at all by the service.

We were there today before 5pm to buy some fish but was dissapointed. We've been waiting for someone to assist us and 2 guys in the cash register saw us but didn't do anything as if nobody is there. Keep on talking and talking, then i approached 1 guy and ask him if somebody's working in the fish area, he said "name of a person" (cant remember) should be there. Then paged someone but still nobody assist us. We decided to leave, walked infront of the 2 guys and they didnt say anything. You call that customer service.

Absolutely horrible experience. took my cat for a hair cut. explained to the person how we wanted my cat's hair done. took 3 hours to them and when we came back he still had lots of hair around his neck and when asked to get it done properly, the lady (ASHLEY) who was cutting his hair got upset cause we send our cat back for get it done properly. she THREW MY CAT OUT OF THE BOX ON TABLE and threw the box on the floor.. all while we were watching her. the assistant manager also saw this and came to her and talked to her i don't know what. What a horrific experience? I looked at some kittens at this store. They told me to call and check up on them. After calling multiple times with no answer. My daughter purchased a hamster with her own money, unfortunately it escaped the cage and met up with our cat. She was so upset and to make her feel better we went into PetSmart to just “look”. The same staff member was there who sold the hamster to us and she was so understanding and empathetic. She convinced us to use a fish tank vs a hamster cage since they often can get out and made my daughter feel like it wasn’t her fault. PetSmart then took back the cage and let us exchange it for the tank. She even brought out a few hamsters they had in the back to look since they weren’t ready for adoption. It’s the tine this staff member took with us that makes me so grateful, I wish I got her name but she was incredibly informative about hamsters, possibly a student with long dark hair. Thank you for your help that day!

10/10 would not visit again for a grooming appointment. To begin, the groomer was less than friendly and unwilling to listen to how I wanted my dog groomed. I've taken my golden retriever here many times before and never encountered this problem. Though, this time, it also took an hour and a half longer than usual. When I came back to check in, as it had been just over 3 hours, the groomer was even more unfriendly and basically told me to screw off and wait. When they finally called me I came back and when I walked in the door the groomer was, with hella attitude, complaining about me and the fact my dog didn't want her nails cut. Which was a known fact to us all and if she let me talk in the beginning, maybe she would've been more prepared. I could see my dog was horrified and, essentially, being tortured as she ground her nails while the other lady in the salon was saying, "oh yeah, i was just saying she should probably pull it" SO, how long was my dog being tortured for?? I'll never know but, would not recommend this PetSmart location for their grooming services.

I remeber when this place used to be amazing. Latley it has completely gone down hill. I have a very sick cat who needs a special food. The staff used to order this in for me no problem but latley that had changed they wont order anything. They dont even seem to care any more to be honest. Customer service has taken a huge downturn. They are never stocked inventory wise so that makes it worse they wont help you. And their animal adoption areas seen really subpar. Not proper treatment of all if you as me. Small, unclean tanks poor babies. And finally more then once now I have come in and they are just letting people walk around the store not wearing masks. Pretty sure right now that legally they should be wearing masks. Hey but I dont really think the staff care very much about the customers anyways so that's probably why. Used to be a great business, I will now after gosh like 10 years of shopping and donating to their charity's I will be shopping somewhere else.

Since they were receiving a truck full of fish we asked both staff about when there would be more betta fish they told us that it would probably take them one to two hours to get the fish unloaded (totally fine, I get that it takes time to unload things) but you would think that maybe since we were going in especially for that they would show us what they had got and then we could pick from there, but she didn’t offer that and seemed rather standoffish. After waiting for 30 minutes to see if any would come out we asked the other lady there who was also rude and said that it would take one to two hours and even after then we wouldn’t be able to buy one because it would be too much stress for the fish to have been shipped and brought to a new home in the same day. I also understand that but we wouldn’t wanna stress out the fish too much but why didn’t she say that in the first place instead of having us wait around for 30 minutes just wandering the store. Also There were many other customers waiting for fish as well but the employees didn’t pay attention to them and didn’t offer to help anyone. Normally I have ok experiences at Petsmart but this one really turned me off.I took them a long time to get through each transaction. We ended up going to my fish tank and the man there was incredibly knowledgeable and had an amazing selection of beautiful fish

They treat their fish HORRIBLY. Literally animal abuse, all their fish are severely ill and nobody there actually knows anything about the fish keeping hobby. It’s so depressing seeing their poor fish CRAMMED in tanks full of DEAD fish that they let rot in there for days on end. They shouldn’t be allowed to sell fish at all. It’s such an embarrassment of a company for fish and small pets. Sorry not sorry but when it comes to animals in danger it just breaks my heart and hurts my soul.

Chain pet store which is to say it's main goal is to sell dry pet food. Fish dept is boring and uninspired, prices are a bit on the high side. But, the staff always seem friendly and helpful.

Have a great variety of animals items and prices are good. As far as fish knowledge i'd be hesitant to buy fish from here. Me along with three other people around my area this week bought fish, and they made our tanks sick. So far i've lost 4 fish and had to buy medication for my tank costing me over $30 so far. The fish didn't look so great but I'm pretty new to the fish tank scene and I didn't trust my gut and got fish anyways. Because I was told they were stressed and that why some were dead in the tank. I understand sometimes fish come in sick but they shouldn't be sold until they are healthy and don't infect our tanks. I will go back for items but will be buying my fish still from a more specialized store. This isn't to bash at all it's to PLEASE be more aware. Sad to get our tanks all healthy to end up losing some and having to spend more to get it back to normal

Great prices and very friendly staff. However, it is hard to find a staff member and seems as if there is never more than one person working at a time. This person is usually working cash and running back and forth to assist customers searching for items. The fish. Be EXTREMELY CAUTIOUS. I have on more than one occasion purchased fish which in return have infected my entire tank killing everything. Find out when the fish arrived. If they just showed up, wait a few days. If they are infected the pet store will notice and you will not be sold the fish. Thankfully they are very gracious with reimbursing the cost of the fish. So long as you bring back all the dead.

Great store! Staff is friendly, helpful and seems to know a great deal about pet care! I especially love the store brand, Authority, for both my dogs and my cats. The price is good and the GF Fish and potato dog food has really helped my allergy sensitive dog. I use the Mature chicken and rice for my senior dog and the GF Salmon kibble for my cats - one also has allergies. They love the taste, I am happy with the prices and even the nutrition expert at one of the top vet clinics in Medicine Hat could not fault the Authority ingredient list when I was in having a consult regarding my allergic dog.

I used to buy her dog food there and dog treats. However they no longer carry Nutro dog treat other than for very small dogs. Very disappointed. She also eats the Nutro lamb and rice for senior dogs. I have been feeding her this for 14 years. So because they don't have the proper treats for her I don't buy anything here. FYI she eat a bag of food every 3 months and treats I'm a softy so. Lots and pigs ears exc. So put the treats back and I come back. She is half Collie and half black lab. If not I'll just order them online !!

Took my dog to be groomed, normally takes 90 minutes, almost 4 hours before he was ready. I told then he was an anxious dog but I guess that doesn't matter. I paid for mail grinding and his nails were not touched. Won't be going back for grooming.
