REVIEWS OF The Biscuit Eater Cafe and Books IN Lunenburg

I was in beautiful Mahone Bay this past May 2019. I began frequenting this casual but super comfortable cafe, and every time was greeted by friendly staff! Ordering was easy upon entry, and whether it was a meal or a cuppa tea and sweets, I was pleasantly served within a reasonable amount of time! My fondest memories were sitting among the variety of books, and interesting decor. I'll be back:)

Fantastic place! Very unique and tastefully decorated, very polite and friendly staff and great food! Great place to go for a casual breakfast/ brunch/ lunch, the food is light and different from other cafes. The Biscuit Eater Cafe and Books was memorable, fun and funky. We learned about this cafe on Tik Tok as a bunch place with towers of food and high tea. We went while returning from a South Shore adventure and enjoyed it just as much as the Tik Tok’ers who posted about it. The food was unique, with excellent flavours, textures and terrific presentation. Coffee was well brewed and the service prompt. This is definitely a place that sees itself aligned with the social justice issues and the selection of books available for sale reflects that, and the curation looks very well done. Even if you don’t identify with identity politics, you’ll enjoy the warm environment of this cafe. We overstayed closing time and the staff were nothing but super friendly and fun. If you’re on the South Shore, near Mahone Bay, take a couple of hours and check this place out. You won’t regret it.

We happened upon this little out of the way place while walking our dog in Mahone Bay, and this might just be our best find yet. The food was excellent. We had the Biscuit Eater and Southwest sandwiches, both of which were phenomenal. The Biscuit Eater was as you might guess served on a biscuit, made in house, and was heavenly. Both were full of flavours and filling. Well worth the price. The service was incredibly friendly and best of all for us they were very accommodating with our dog, allowing us to eat on the little lawn just beyond their outdoor area. This gave him a place to lie down in the shade, which was awesome on such a hot day. It was like a little picnic underneath the shade of a flowering tree. We all loved the experience and will absolutely return.

Darlene Lohnes

This was my first time eating here,so glad I did! I had the roasted chicken sandwich, it was delicious, great service, its a bit pricey but the food was homemade, which is what I was looking for. Its very warm& cozy. They had delicious looking desserts, might try that next time. If your looking for something quick& fast, this is not the place but we enjoyed our coffee& tea& visit while waiting for our delicious food ???? highly recommend the biscuit eater:)

Great place for breakfast or lunch. Unique and delicious baked goods. High quality coffee/espresso and tea selection. Vegetarian/vegan friendly. Also meats. Wonderful staff. Good for eat in or take out. Easy online ordering platform. Cozy atmosphere.

Nice place for tea

This old building and amazing food is a must see and eat. Book a table ahead if time and let them know if you have any food restrictions and they'll prep gluten free, vegetarian, vegan, ect, options. You should book a table ahead of time anyway because they will be busy. The antiques tucked everywhere filled the space and made a lovely atmosphere. The downside being that the tables are quite packed into the space and it was surprisingly loud (not too loud) for the tea experience. Just because it's so busy and people are excited to be there.

Ian Daniels

Truly a must try. In an area of must tries. Order any sandwich, but make sure its on a biscuit! The titular biscuit eater sachwich might be the perfect lunch sandwich.

The food is very nice. Even more important for me, they are dog friendly. I was able to eat at an outside table with my dog and they even brought her water. I wish more places with outside seating were as welcoming to travelling dogs.

Tucked away down a side street in the heart of Mahone Bay, this charming eatery has a sizable menu of both sweet and savory flavors. Freshly baked tarts, cakes, and cookies perfectly pair with the cafe’s quality selection of coffee and tea and the lunch options are quite diverse. Yet as good as the food is, the best part about The Biscuit has to be the ambiance. Stepping into the library room made me feel like Belle when she sees the Beast’s library for the first time. The nostalgia is overwhelming. Better still is the patio and garden seating, perfect for high tea on a cool summer day. Bottom line: The Biscuit is a great option for a delicious meal at a fair price.

Great atmosphere and friendly staff! A bit on the pricey side and not ideal for anyone that's picky... However, the menu is still diverse and it's a great place to have a bite and read if you have some time. They sell a wonderful selection of books here and it's a great place to meet up with friends.

Quaint little house off the main street that has great food. Lots of love going into your plate there. My wife couldn't stop gushing about the interior too. That's why I locked it. A library-esque feel with cozy seating all over.

Truly divine! amazing coffee, lunch menu and desserts! What a funky lil' place. Historic small town charm. On the pricey side. YUM!

It’s a cute little cafe with a ton of books not just for reading but also for purchase of anything catches your eye. I had the fish cakes and eggs for breakfast and yay, my eggs were runny! Something I seemed to be having trouble getting in the Maritimes?? The fish cakes were moist and flavourful and went great with the lemon aioli. The sunny side up eggs were cooked perfectly and the tea recommendation really hit the spot.

Charming and dog friendly. The ambiance is great. Iutdoir patios and lovely books to check out. The food is good and imaginative. I had the eggs Benny and did not love the modified hollandaise. Twice visited, twice disappointed. Twice I went for tea in the afternoon close to their very leisure 4pm closing time only be greeted with a loud and abrupt "We're closing." Its almost as if the wear this early closing hour as some badge of honor attesting to their business success. I ordered a pot of tea and was promised delivery to our table. What arrived were two soggy paper cups with another pronouncement that they had closed their dish bin, and how we were lucky because the price of the pot was cheaper than the two takeaway cups. Now I understand that we came close to the closing hour, but I think it would be better to turn me away rather than give us poor service and a rushed experience. In my option, it just ruins the leisure experience I wanted and believe I was paying for. The manner in which we were treated was abrupt, maybe not rude, but very loud and unapologetic. A simple smoothing of the delivery of the hours of operation and any diminished service expectation would go a long way towards making the business more customer oriented. Bottom line is that clients come for food and ambiance, as a client I don't think it's my role to empathize with staff rushing off duty after paying full price. As I said, if that's the way they operate, last orders should be 30 minutes before closing. Be as kind to your clients as you apparently are to your staff.

Ate outside in their back patio on a warm September day. The menu was small but creative. I had the smoked salmon and bacon sandwich that was well balanced and tasty. My girlfriend had the Mediterranean platter that was quite good but not great. Her decaf americano coffee was made to order and was great. She even bought a book for her grandson. All in all a very good experience.

A cozy atmosphere and a community emphasis make this feel more like a locals' spot than a tourist destination. Love that it is in a house built in the 1780s by one of my ancestors!

Marsh Williams

We were traveling the coast and looking for a good local place to eat; we always go for local over anything else and this place was one of our best finds ever. A cafe and bookstore, what's not to like. It was like walking into a worm library and being served some of the best food we'd ever eaten. Once we ordered we could just browse the books while waiting. They also have a very nice outdoor patio but it's probably getting a little too cool now. I imagine in Spring, summer and early fall it's a great place to sit read and eat. One additional Shout Out to the staff...friendly, knowledgable and just really fun to talk with.

Krystina Levitski

One of the best breakfast sandwiches my boyfriend and I have ever had! This is a very cute cafe tucked away in Mahone Bay, and it's totally worth the trip! It feels like a tea party and bookstore mashed into one. Great food and friendly staff. We're definitely going to miss the biscuits!

The Biscuit Eater café is a warm and welcoming environment with great food and engaging service. There is a strong feeling of positive community and personal relationships - it's a gathering place for locals and tourists alike. The food at the Biscuit Eater is wonderful - quality locally sourced ingredients, great recipes, wonderful cooks, and beautiful artistic presentation. The ginger cookies are my absolute favourite and by the best I've eaten at any café in Nova Scotia.

Lovely little place, nice to see it doing so well! I will say if you’re coming on a weekend, don’t come if you’re in a rush. We went and there was a long wait to get our food, but it was understandable due to how busy it was. The staff were all very friendly and the food was delicious! I would 100% go again to see if we just caught them on an off day. I got the afternoon tea tower and asked for it to be vegetarian, and it was awesome.

Fay Patey

Amazing food. Fresh scones cookies and other treats. Nice little reading room areas with local items for sale as well

Bessy Nikolaou

A sweet little gem in Mahone Bay for brunch / lunch.

Seán Morgan

Had coffee and tea biscuits here and it was so good we returned for lunch! Delicious lunch, especially the soup!

Liev Ryan

Cute little spot but unfortunately the food wasn't good. My burger was burnt and the side salad was okay. Service didn't make up for my poor food so I can unfortunately not recommended it. Maybe a good stop for a coffee and a read but take your dining elsewhere, especially with other local choices in the area.

David Hosey

Surprised by the place and how friendly and efficient staff are. Cool vibe and good food and coffee

Tanya Hatfield

It was a busy little spot. Entrance room has many delicious looking desserts on display for you to pick from. Interesting menu items. We sat outside. Seemed like it was taking forever to get service. But once we realized that we had to order our food up at the front counter oh, it didn't take long to get what we ordered. And the food was really good.

Valérie Desjardins

What an amazing place ! The is a beautiful old house with old furniture that makes the place cozy and interesting. They also have a lot of book. About the food... OMG this was sooo good. I took a corn chowder and a biscuit and i really wish i could eat this again right now.

john jodrey

Lots of vegetarian options and food was delicious. Will definitely go back.

Andrew Wallace

Absolutely fantastic! I wish I could give it more than five stars. We had a beautiful drive to get there. It was very busy when we arrived, but they still took great care to make us feel welcome. We had the Royal Tea and both of got our own teapot. The tray of sweet treats was amazing, but their savoury selection is above and beyond! I highly recommend! Definitely worth a drive from Halifax.

10 stars if I could!! Food was outstanding!

Kristina Shirai

Amazing interior, attentive people work there, option to eat inside and outside. I would say a little bit overpriced (60 dollars for 3 meals: eggs, bacon, potato; sandwich with beef; croissant with whipped cream, capuccino).

Nice spot but horribly slow, especially irritating when there are only eight people in the restaurant. Not sure what they do when there are more customers. However, if they continue with this level of service, too many customers will not be a problem.

David Daigle

Lorraine Kelly

It was a delightful lunch. The server was wonderful and so helpful. We look forward to returning.

Peter Boudreau

Service was lacking...tables left unbussed while the staff enjoyed a meaningless arguement.

Terina Pickering

Mediocre baking, though it all looked so appetizing. Poorly prepared, cold latte, cold mushroom roll...not what I would expect for the seemingly sophisticated, large selection of scones and other baked goods and the prices. Too bad because location is beautiful, bookstore offered great selection of unique, interesting books but I wouldn't go back for the food. Other customers commented they had a similar experience after we left.

Good food, quiet, friendly staff.

If you are going to be pretentious then food and service needs to be spot on. We waited 35 minutes for 2 eggs, cold/old fried potatoes, and 2 biscuits. We ordered 3 biscuits but the 3rd didn't arrive until we were done with the meal. Iced tea was warm and the coffee foamy. Very sorry we ate there. Ambience does not make up for pricey sub par food.

Wonderful little spot! I have been driving across Canada with my hubby and along the way we have been looking for the perfect place that combines coffee and books and this place is everything I could want! I love the charm and atmosphere and especially appreciate that there were lactose free treats I could eat! We were thrilled with this little cafe !

Emilee Wood

Just wanting to share my experience as a customer that’s been visiting for many years! I was disappointed with our experience today for lunch. We were shown to a tiny table between the two adjoining rooms which was very cramped (I get that covid has changed seating a bit that’s no problem) and were told it would be wiped down soon which didn’t happen. We requested a different table after about ten minutes which had more space which we appreciated. It didn’t seem to be particularly busy but we waited a long time for our drinks and the latte was tepid and the coffee tasted really bad. The sandwich was pretty good as well as the chilli! We asked for a takeaway box and bills and again waited a really long time so we ended up going up to the front to pay. Our server was really nice but the whole experience just seemed really disorganized and slow. I’m sure it was just an off day, I always enjoy coming to your restaurant!

Justin Hartlen

Great food, reasonable prices. Lovely atmosphere and service. More than just a restaurant, they have books, games, and patio with garden too. Tucked away with plenty of parking if coming from out of town, but so close to the main streets you wouldn't bother moving your car if already local.

Amazing take-out items! We had a tapas platter and the medium dessert box for two, and it was more than enough. Great presentation even though it was take-out, and it made a great picnic!

The Biscuit Eater is such a wonderful place! I chose this place for a high tea celebration for a bachelorette party, and the staff were nothing but beautiful to all of us! I booked early for a reservation, and I would recommend that for a group, as it is a cozy spot. The decor is simple, charming, and allows for the books to speak for themselves. The shelves line every room in the café, and the book selection for purchase is modern and friendly to all people. The washrooms are clean and covid protocols are all followed very well. The tea was delicious! Each member of the party had a different tea, and each got a high tea tower. The tea service was presented on beautiful trays, and each tea cup and tea pot was delightfully different. The staff were able to accommodate some dairy free requests easily, and no one felt left out or excluded. The food was exquisite, home made with lots of flavours, and tasty ingredients. The staff were so friendly to all of us, one even coming back to let us know where they got their shirt because we all loved it. The other staff we interacted with were just as awesome, letting us have doggy boxes to store our extra treats in. I will absolutely be making the journey to Biscuit Eater again! Thank you for the excellent day!

Cathy Grad

Very delicious grilled brie cheese and carmelized sandwich with cranberries...quaint and cozy atmosphere.

Troy Payne

Probably the best sandwich i've ever eaten! ( The ham and swiss). Wonderful atmosphere and great people! This place is a real gem and a must visit!!

Ingy Barclay

I really loved it here. The staff was friendly, great food, comforting tea in pretty tea cups. You can have high tea surrounded by books.
