I was very excited to visit Heartwood after looking at their menu online. It was a cozy location and the service quick and friendly. The loss of stars is because of the meal I ordered. The salad and potatoes on the side were reasonably sized and tasted great, the entree however was very meh. I got the Thai Burger and to be completly honest it was a dissappointment. The bread was cold and crusty, as if it had been toasted earlier in the afternoon and served much later. The patty was very small and thin and the "Thai peanut sauce" was flavorless and bland, like watered down peanut butter, not at all like the spicy, ginger, garlic sauces I'd enjoyed in South East Asia. I fully realize that you are not going to get authentic Thai flavors, however, this was beyond bland and was not worth the price. I mentioned it to the server as I was leaving and she said that the kitchen staff was new and perhaps stressed by the dinner rush. I did send a Facebook message to Heartwood because I do not like to leave negative reviews but did not recieve a response. I would consider trying Heartwood again, but would not recomend the burgers! My phone was dead at the time or I would have taken a picture.

Not too many places in Halifax where you can get such a wonderful assortment of vegetarian and vegan dishes. Staff is TOPS: they know their stuff and are very attentive and helpful. Place is clean, well taken-care of, and has a LOVELY, laid-back, relaxing vibe to it. Really can't complain!!!

This place has good food. It's sometimes quite busy and you get to eat under the watchful gaze of people scanning the crowd and betting on which table will free up first. Seriously though the noodle bowl is really good. Omnivores could eat here and not be all whining about there not being meat on the menu.

Terrible. This evening I decided to order myself the vegan “green” poutine and half way through, after feeling great all day, I began throwing up. I was really upset about the quality and experience but I was most upset about the customer service. I called to inform a worker and I spoke with Amanda, the manager, and she told me she also ate a green poutine and felt fine so therefore they didn’t do anyhingn wrong and she can’t help. I was astonished by this experience, I have never been more dissapointed by a food and service experience in my life. Highly do not reccomend.

I frequent Heartwood about once a month, usually for takeout. Over the past 4 years I’ve had nothing but exceptional service from them, both the food, and staff are superb. I had the pleasure of eating on their patio this summer as well, it was gorgeous and felt like we were still part of the restaurant which was really nice. Even my one negative experience was remedied so quickly and kindly, over the summer I tried to order online through Gatahub and there was a glitch, and i ended up having to wait for an extended period of time. My favourite dishes are the taco salad, traditional heartwood bowl, and the burrito! But having tried most of the menu so far there’s nothing I haven’t loved! The desserts are a great treat too! Overall: Atmosphere 5/5 Food 5/5 Staff 5/5

We ate here tonight (6/24/2015) at this vegan/vegetarian restaurant in Halifax. The service was somewhat slow, but friendly and very good. This restaurant is somewhat reminiscent of a restaurant in my home city, the Garden Grille in Providence, RI, years ago before it went upscale. The decor is simple and clean, the presentation is good, and the atmosphere is generally soft. Alcohol is served (beer and wine) but I didn't drink any. We started with the guacamole and hummus platter. Everything was freshly made and tasted like it. For dinner, I ordered had the "green poutine." Some people might leave this restaurant feeling light, but I promise you they did not order this. Baked fries, green onions, tomatoes, and kale, drenched in mushroom gravy and your choice of cheddar or vegan cheese, topped with fresh sprouts. This meal is an absolutely fantastic rendition of the classic poutine dish that won't leave you feeling like you just kicked your cholesterol up 7 points in a single sitting. Milady ordered the "Heartwood Bowl" with spicy peanut sauce. This was also an excellent dish with plenty of food.

This restaurant is deliciouse. I included a picture of the bean burrito dish we had. Everything about it is tasty right down to the corn chips. You get a nice helping of food for your money and are quite full when finished. My husband ended up ordering this again the next day because it was so good. Very fresh and very tasty. A great vegetarian restaurant. It's going to be on our return to list for sure. It's one of those places that you want to try Everything on their menu. Highly recommend ????

They had very limited menu options when I went. Was hoping to get salad for my supper but there’s only one option. (which is “salad of the day”) The taste was ok, felt like pretty oily… even when I finished the dish, there was still a lot of oil on the bottom of the bowl. However I do like there atmosphere and patio. The servers were nice, just a little bit slow, it took almost 40 mins to get my food even there was not too many people. Still nice that there’s a restaurant for vegetarians on Quinpool tho.

I ordered the spicy peanut heartwood bowl with rice noodles and let me tell you this was so flippin’ delicious!! This is one of my first ‘restaurant’ experiences since learning I am celiac, I had complete confidence my gluten free requirement was going to be taken seriously which gave me a huge sense of ease and allowed me to properly enjoy the food without worrying about getting sick. 10/10 so happy with this experience. (Note: the food in the picture was sitting for about 30 mins before I took the photo)

My husband and I ordered the Heartwood bowl and the veg burger. The burgers lacks taste and the salad was too salty. The roasted potatoes looked and tasted as if they have been cooked 2 days ago. The veggies in the bowl did not look fresh at all. The atmosphere indoors is not encouraging. Very dark and smells weird. Will not come back to this restaurant.

The staff is friendly, the atmosphere was welcoming and they have a kids menu. I was really excited to try this place and after reading the menu online I had high expectations, but when my food came I was disappointed. The "herbed potatoes" in my Green Poutine were undercooked, sauce was way too thick and I'm not so sure it was the mushroom gravy as advertised. The Nachos were soggy, flat and had dried out mushrooms. It seemed they had a very inexperienced cook on shift. Obviously the Heartwood is a hit or miss for quality.

I am sorry to say after spending $40 for lunch for 2 I was very disappointed in our meal. Although salad was tasty it was very dry with only a couple of tbsp of avocado mix to dip the veggies. The nachos were good but again need much larger serving of salsa and no sour cream! The cauliflower and chickpea soup very good but barely 1cup . The cheese delicious and no complaint. I think my main complaint is that your serving are way too small and not enough condiments for the price we pay.

What I love about this place is you don't need to be vegan or vegetarian to enjoy the food. Their menu has something for everyone! The portions are generous, prices are on par with other veg spots around, and they offer daily specials which are always delicious. The interior is a bit small so I'd advise calling ahead if you're a large group. Food wise though, the place is incredible!

Was very pleasantly surprised walking into this small, vegetarian restaurant on Quinpool. Not a very big restaurant, almost felt like a coffee shop when immediately entering. Although there was only one staff taking orders (hence it was sort of slow), it was a very nice atmosphere. The menu was very interesting and lots of great food. When the food got to my table, i was amazed. The lentil/squash burger was out of this world, and even the side of mixed greens was fabulous! Portions were small, but filling and it was just right. Highly recommend.

I love eating here. I'm vegan, but I still often find myself without enough veggies in my diet and Heartwood is definitely the place to go when you need your greens. My favorite is their coconut curry Heartwood bowl and the mixed vegetables. All their dressings and sauces are delicious. I can also highly recommend their house wine, which is organic and from Portugal. I only tried the white and it was divine.. I ended up going to NSLC to buy some for my personal use at home.

A great restaurant with an outdoor patio in the spring and summer months. All the food they serve is vegetarian or vegan. They have a liquor license so can serve local drinks. A very popular place, you can find people dining together in groups and also students solo by the Windows doing work.

The only thing good about this place is the vibe that it portrays. The food looked like it should’ve tasted good, when in fact the burrito was extremely disappointing. The salad was okay, the rice was too. But that being said i wouldve been happier cooking at home or going to mcdonalds. Not to mention the service was also terrible. We found old food chunks floating around in the glass bottle of water we were given and the glasses also had the same issue, very dirty.

I've been twice now, and the food and service were exceptional both times. A great place to go to try out delicious food that happens to be vegan, with plenty of vegetarian options as well. They also allow you to bring your own wine, and have a $10 corking fee. I haven't had a chance to take advantage of this myself yet, but I plan to because it has such a nice atmosphere.

I have been to this restaurant many times over many years and I am sorry to say that lately Heartwood seems to be inconsistent in the quality of food and service. We shared the tacos (vegan topping) for a starter (between 2) and where last time they had been filled with peppers onions and a good amount of the topping, this time it was a plate filled mostly with dry corn chips scattered with a few peppers and bits of onions. The topping was barely there. We both had the BBQ burger (nicely moist) which relied heavily on being very hot, with no discernable BBQ flavour. The potatoes lacked any taste at all. The waitress was distracted with too many tables to wait on. In what is usually a very low lit restaurant, this time one end was bright (at least we were able to read the menus without using our phones) because at the other end the lightbulb had burned out and they couldn't replace it. Those patrons sat in the dark. It was a very disappointing evening. We won't be returning any time soon. Edit: 2 weeks later when friends went there, one whole end was still in the dark.

My friend and I had dinner there the other night. We both had Heartwood Bowls, with different sauces. They didn't seem to have as many veggies as before and they are fairly expensive. The sauces were a little too thick, but otherwise they were delicious. We decided to each take out a different kind of cookie (gluten-free). We were so disappointed, as they were very dry and almost completely tasteless! Also, I was disappointed to find that there isn't any gluten-free pizza anymore. I think there used to be, and I enjoyed it! A lot of care has gone into the upgrade of the 'ambience', but the actually food seems to have gone in the other direction. :-( The service was good!

Heartwood is the best vegan and vegetarian restaurant in Halifax. The food is delicious, the staff is wonderful and the atmosphere is perfect. Be sure to try the pizzas and Heartwood bowls.

Bland food. This was my second time visiting and was once again disappointed. I tried the BBQ burger with soup, which was lentil vegetable. The burger was bland mush on a sad, flavourless bun. The soup was actually pretty decent. My friend ordered the burger and fries, but her fries tasted as though they had been baked earlier in the day and only reheated before serving (soggy crispy). The service is good and the atmosphere is welcoming. There is potential, but I can't recommend it when there are other vegan restaurants with much better food.

I ate here for the first time this past weekend. It's a nice little spot with good service and friendly staff. I ordered the green pizza and although the topping were delicious (yummy pesto), the crust was not good. It was a spongy dried out texture. I'm not a vegan, but I'm sure there has to be more palatable crust options. I will give this place another shot, but I'll be skipping the pizza.
