REVIEWS OF Almonak Halifax IN Halifax

Almonak was exactly what we were looking for our first meal in Halifax! We were really happy with our meal and the service, we would definitely recommend. Pictured: lavender oatmilk latte, eggs benny (1x with ham, 1x with tofu), chocolate strawberry trifle.

The food is amazing. Great selection. Fine dining at affordable prices. I recommend trying the desert! They are all great.

Ashoka Zuni

Almonak is a little gem in the north end of Halifax. They have a cafe where you can get stuff to go. We went for lunch, I was impressed with both the presentation and flavours of our dishes.

Loved it! Lovely decor, comfy atmosphere and friendly staff combined with a delicious brunch menu makes this a perfect spot to dine. The Eggs Benny was delish - definitely get the herbaceous hashbrown and mixed greens with it (you're welcome). Friends had the mashed asparagus and peas with a poached egg and toasted foccicia and they loved it too. We will be back again soon to try more brunchy goodness.

Very small portions. Not worth it.

Ian McKay

Very good food. Busy and service a but slow, but otherwise very good. Inside was noisy due to how crowded it was. Patio looks nice.

Stuart MacDonald

Good food and a neat venue nestled in the heart of the North end. Designed as share plates it's a nicer date spot. The portioned are small though, so order a little extra. The mushrooms are highly recommended.

We finally made it to Almonak and were not disappointed. Great space, service and food. The social distancing is appropriate and they have digital menus (smart!). Lots of great options on the menu and do we will be back!

We came in for a Saturday brunch gathering. Our server was pleasant and attentive to our needs, noticed that when we had our menus turned over that we were ready to order. We had different orders all around the table, had the diner breakfast, the chicken fried steak benny (my order), the french toast (see pics) and the rice bowl. The food arrived and the presentation was perfect, rustic and clean. How was my dish you ask....well lets just say I usually eat half and take the rest home but this time I had to eat it all. The steak was tender, even though it was fried. The egg cooked perfectly, and the biscuits that the benny sat on were clearly made in house. The interesting twist was the olive tapenade under the steak, the acidity helped cut the richness of the dish and balanced it all out. My sister had the french toast and folks, its a massive portion. Great for those Saturday night party goers who need some grease, some sweet and protein fix for their morning. The diner breaky looked great and so did the rice bowl (sorry, no pics) I am content with my overall experience, and yes I need to go back for something new!

Almonak is absolutely delicious. But this was literally the tiniest serving I have ever recieved. This was an $18 corned beef hash.

Tom Sinclair

Had the Dirty Rice as well as the Broccolini and Kale salad. Way more food than what was needed but both were fantastic. The salad was unlike any I've had before, in the best way. Great fusion of flavours!

At best unremarkable for the price and at worst egregiously overpriced.

There’s something for everyone at Almonak (5659 Almon Street). A north end eatery. Huge selection of quality coffee and teas. Great kitchen, coffee and bakery into one welcoming space that should appeal to all ages. You can get coffee, a snack (try the biscuits which are somewhere between sourdough and a croissant). Later in the day they serve cocktails. the decor accommodates everyone from the solo on a laptop to a group over dinner. The kitchen provides healthy, homemade lunches from Wednesday to Fridays, brunch on the weekends and dinner service with cocktails Wednesday to Sunday. The coffee and tea selection are huge. The liquor selection is small but eclectic. Compass Distillers provides all its liquors including kegged cocktails on-tap, alongside Goodmore Kombucha and Planters Ridge bubbly for mimosas. Dinners are large and shareable plates for groups. Selections are keto-friendly, gluten-free and vegan inspired. The brunch menu has healthy twists on classics, like swapping out Clamato juice with in-house beet juice in a Caesar.

Nice venue delicious food, pleasant staff. What ruined it for me was the noise of other customers and the obnoxious pounding music more appropriate to a bar than to a restaurant. Music should support the dining experience not overwhelm it. However, I admit that I'm showing my age and this is probably attractive to a younger crowd. I would go again but only if the weather were nice enough to allow sitting at the outside patio.

Good food but ---- We stopped in for the first time this past Saturday Sept 18th for brunch. The food was okay but felt very rushed especially given the cost. I decided to order the 'side' of half an avocado for $4.50 which I asked to have on the side, not on the benny. When my benny was delivered, the waiter said sorry - hope its ok but its on the benny. I looked and noted two very tiny pieces on each half of the benny. But with COVID and all decided not to make a big deal of it - servers and restaurants are challenged enough - also based on what I was given assumed surely it wouldn't be charged at $4.50 as there was only about 2 tbsp total of avocado here. No such luck - after adding the side of salad and potatoes also for a $4.00 charge (who serves a benny with no sides?? almost all their other breakfast dishes came with a side) the total coast came in at $25.75 for an eggs benny - pretax and pretip. Adding to this the Americano was mostly tepid at best when delivered. I know this place has great ratings - maybe I will try it again who knows. But the prices were pretty high for a rushed cold brunch.

Brunch and cafe goods are delicious and a nice switch up from classic brunch items, however the dinner menu is a bit confusing and pricey for what you get. As a vegetarian I wasn't blown away by the options and most of the people I went with for dinner were also underwhelmed. It's set up as sharable small plates, but they will cost you $20-$30 a pop and it's recommended that guests choose 2-3 plates a person, so can add up quick for not much food.

Heather Docherty

I really hate to post a bad review. With all the positive reviews I'm wondering if we had an off evening. We dined there last night and immediately we were told we had to sit on the patio without reservations (no problem). We saw all the tables around us were offered blankets but we weren't (ok, we asked for one). The atmosphere inside was well decorated, modern, very hip. Outside was fine. No complaints here. It took awhile for our server to greet us - and it didn't seem too busy at this point so not entirely sure what the hold up was but ok, we are still happy at this point. I am pregnant so unfortunately I wasn't partaking in any of the cocktails but enjoyed a nice roobios tea. My friends started off with a Yazz Flute and a Young and Fashionable. Both appeared watered down and were filled to about 1/3 rd of the glass which seemed fine for the whiskey based but unexpected for the Yazz Flute. The Young and Fashionable came with a fruit fly in it - but it's Halifax and summer so we were somewhat forgiving and just removed it. My friend enjoyed an Alchemist next which was pretty, not watered down - overall fine. Which led us to wonder if we were given someone's discarded cocktails. But nooo....someone wouldn't do that? Well, I'm not so sure. There was a 4 top near us who mistakenly had two plates delivered to their table. Once the server came back to check and realized the mistake I watched her take it back inside and give it to the correct table. WHAT?! That food is dead at this point and has been at someone else's table - you have to remake that. (Speaking as a former server). Nope, someone ate food that had been sitting at someone else's table - possibly touched, who knows. Which is why we then became suspicious of our 1st round of drinks but they just switched to wine. And they drank a few glasses since we waited an INSANE amount of time for our food. We arrived at Almanak around 6 put our food order in around maybe 6:45? We got our food at 8. We ordered 5 plates which wasn't nearly enough for 3 people. Presentation was pretty but the wait time really put a cloud over the meal at this point and we left underwhelmed and unsatiated with a $200 tab. Maybe some kinks need to be worked out or it was just a bad night of service but I have no plans to go back any time in the future.

Incredibly loud. Slow service. Had one if the eggs benedict for brunch - the pouched eggs were overcooked/dry, and the biscuit and pork were dry and tough. An expensive disappointment.

This restaurant is so good. I've been here twice at the cafe just for a coffee and a biscuit and their biscuits are unreal, and so is the ashed butter it comes with. The lunch I had there was one of the best meals I've ever had and the way they do dinner, shared meals to curate your own experience, was phenomenal. Love this place!

Today was my first visit to Almonak and I would definitely go again! My grandmother (a meat-eater) and myself (a vegetarian) wanted to go out to lunch together and we chose Almonak because of the wide range of diets they cater to (gluten-free, vegan, meat-eaters, etc). Like the other reviews say, it was quite noisy with lots of chatter and music playing. Since we didn't have a reservation, we ended up sitting outside which worked out totally fine as they had blankets, an outdoor heater and an umbrella for Halifax's varying autumn conditions. Our server Matt was wonderful and attentive. He told us it was his first day and we would never have guessed as he was confident and knowledgable. He checked on us multiple times throughout the meal and was keen to help with anything we needed. We both got lattes and Eggs Benedict, and I got the vegan brownie parfait for dessert. They also have vegan milk alternatives for their coffee drinks. The food presentation was 5/5, taste 5/5 and we were overall really impressed. I was also happy to see that their 3 washrooms are gender-neutral and 1/3 is accessible. It was quite busy even on a Thursday so you will likely want to consider making a reservation when you go. I'll be back!!

Probably the best eggs benedict I’ve ever had, homemade biscuit was bomb, potatoes were seasoned perfectly, salad was so light and fresh- highly recommend! Our lattes were so delicious and the staff was so nice, we got an iced americano and peppermint mocha to go which were also superb.

Decent food, hip atmosphere. Very fancy looking plating - not really my vibe. Very friendly waiter (almost too friendly)

Overpriced, not great selection. Trying to hard to be upscale but didn't really nail it for the price. LOUD. Service is nice and prompt but not overly attentive.

Andrew Xiao

Interesting array of offerings using a creative palette of ingredients. The flavour and texture combinations are well thought out cooperate well. Each dish is visually pleasing as they make a clear effort in the presentation. The open concept restaurant/kitchen may benefit from better ventilation as you will leave the restaurant smelling of whatever was being cooked. Overall, it was a pleasant experience. I am glad that they keep the space open as a cafe between meal service.

The only two things that weren’t great was the noise, very loud, hard to hear the people I was dining with, and the way we were asked to leave. We understood during COVID, sit and eat times aren’t lengthy but server asked if we needed anything else because it seemed like we were ‘camping’!!. Not subtle. I was at Antojos a week ago where the server kindly mentioned the time frame expectations BEFORE we ordered. A nicer way of doing it in my opinion. Food was delicious. This tainted it.

Amazing food and excellent service!! My wife wanted to go there for so long, so we finally did and it was delicious!

John Newgard

Incredible gourmet plates and bowls disguised as affordable comfort food. We shared a bunch of plates and got to experience all sorts of incredible flavours.

Jason Quinn

The restaurant was freezing cold. For some reason there was AC blowing onto me despite it being November. The food was terrible. Had waffles which were freezing cold and soggy from whip cream and some sort of topping which had saturated through them. Drip coffee was undrinkable. One star rating is also on the basis of price. In theory it would be possible to find somewhere worse but I think you'd be hard pressed to do so at this price point as it was quite expensive for brunch.

Got the avocado focaccia, it was tasty. I was disappointed that it was the only vegan option other than making a plate of sides.

Jennifer Hall

This place is so loud when it's full that you have to raise your voice to speak to the people at your own table or you can't hear. The food was a mixed bag. There were too many different items on each plate so that it just ruins your palate and they don't all make sense together. On top of that all of our poached eggs were overcooked and the biscuit they served the eggs Benedict on was like a rock. I don't understand why people like this place but to each their own.

Louise Tattersall

This is such a beautiful cafe/restaurant. The modern building is so beautifully furnished and the hanging wall plants as you walk in, are too cute. I didn't eat, but my boyfriends eggs Benedict looked incredible. Perfect portion too! The coffee was delicious, nice to get a vanilla latte that still actually tastes like coffee! The staff were really helpful and down to earth. Will be going back for sure

Hands down, the best brunch in Halifax. I waited to write this... I have visited 5+ times and between myself and my wife tried all the dishes... truly exceptional. Just wow. :) I wanted to try Almonak and no better time than during pandemic to support our local businesses. We ordered the family pack for delivery and it was beyond my expectations. The value was well worth it, especially with free delivery. But, the food quality was amazing. Every dish was spectacular, and good portion sizes. I also really appreciated the service! So friendly, informative, and fun - I'm impressed. I can't wait to visit when we can. Bonus, I'm in walking distance :)

Firstly, the staff were incredible, so polite and charasmatic. Felt personal with each member. My drinks were delicious, first time having mimosas was a pleasurable experience to have their flight tray with each unique flavor provided. My table decided to have all of the specials, and i had the strawberry waffles, they gave me one waffle which was great because it is a normal portion, the flavor was magnificent, i loved the creams. My overall experience was phenomenal. Ps, if they ever have hazel nut cake on the specials again, i STRONGLY recommend it.

There need to be more stars to rate this place because it was the best food I have ever eaten anywhere hands down. Luis Clavel is a culinary genius. His TV Dinner takes meat loaf to a whole.new level. Go there. Eat this.

Paul Berry

Just had dinner there, dropped in on a whim. Small plates, Chef sat down with us to review my partner's allergies. Everything was absolutely delicious, amazingly tasty. Service was friendly and quick. Wine and beet selection was good. I'd recommend it and we are definitely going back. It was a little loud but bearable, music not to my 50+ year old taste. And they have an amazing brunch too. They just revised their menu, (Oct. 2019) we've tasted a few things on it - the gnocchi is absolutely amazing, as is the mi-cuit salmon!

Katie Enman

Definitely a unique dining experience! The menu is unlike anything we have in Halifax so be prepared to 'eat outside the box' a bit. Most plates are shareable portions and there's a healthy mix of meat and veggie options. The prices were very reasonable. I wasn't crazy about the dessert, red velvet was dry and forgettable. The inside was nicely decorated however the hanging decor was too low and I saw several people hit their heads. Our server was very friendly and attentive, and the person who delivered our food explained each plate she put down in front of us which was super helpful. The hostess did not offer any other greeting aside from," we only have one table left that's not reserved."

Worked here when the place first opened... I don't doubt the food now is wonderful but I don't know if it will compare to what the original head chef was cooking up. In terms of work: management needs an attitude adjustment, also don't work here if you can't handle a fast pace or if you don't like being "expected" to come in for certain events even if your name isn't on the schedule... realistically the best part about working here is the free food.

Rachelle Boutilier

Tried here for lunch twice in the last couple of weeks, both two hot summer days around noon. The place was about half full each time. Friendly service, definitely a bit more prompt the second time than the first. Nice, bright casual atmosphere with some interesting wall patterns, some greens, open concept kitchen, sweets on display at the counter. The food is very good. Menu pages are separated by afternoon bowls, brunch, shared plates, desserts, drinks. I first tried the Lentil & Roasted Mushroom bowl ($16 lentil ragout, cured yolk emulsion, goat ricotta, sunny side egg, roasted mushroom). These are reasonable portioned meals for lunch, not a lot of food, but somehow still filling. Full of different flavors and textures, as one can tell by just reading the ingredients. My friend had the TV Dinner bowl each visit ($17 Almonak loaf/meat, kernel corn, sun-dried tomato truffle, fingerlings) and really enjoyed it. We sampled each other's and agreed, both very tasty. 2nd visit I tried the Ginger Shrimp bowl ($17 green curry, artichoke, 5 or 6 shrimps, coconut ginger, micro mussels, sherry vinegar, eggplant arugula). Bit of spicy kick to it, with an obviously strong Thai taste, very enjoyable. Their iced chai latte was quite good/smoky, and their wellness late with matcha was nice as well. We WILL be back for more lunches, and hopefully other times of day as well. 3rd visit: lunch on a drizzly Wednesday. Tried the Chickpeas bowl (braised chickpeas, smoked tofu, curry miso broth, yams, granola, cucumber $16.5). I saw nor tasted any cucumber whatsoever, but the dish overall was my favorite so far. Lots of flavor, and probably one of the more filling bowl items on the menu...I was very full when done. Busier this lunch time than my prior to visits, but no wait for a table. 4th visit: a cloudy Thursday for lunch in August at about 11:45. The 'Not Grandma's Potato Salad' (caramelized russets, molten cheese, sous vide shallots, mustard, mission olives, caramelized cabbage $15) was good, but maybe not as good as the first few dishes I had. Reminded me more of an over-sized side dish, strong flavor, and even filling, but lacking something? The loudness of people talking in here was much louder than noticed previously. 5th visit: 10:15am on a sunny Saturday in August. Too loud for my liking. Got a seat at the window and didn't find it relaxing the way a cafe it supposed to be, because of how busy it was, inside and out. Good for the business though. I did enjoy the Tostada very much ($17 house made tortillas, house made chorizo, pico de gallo, fried avocado, feta aioli, pickled cabbage, poached eggs, hollandaise). I mixed everything up and then found the pickled flavor dominated over everything, so it was a strong meal, but still decent. 6th visit: breakfast in June 2021, so awhile since my last visit. (Thanks, covid). Don't have a full description of the avocado + toast, but found it perfectly satisfying for 10am on a relaxing Saturday morning. Served on focaccia, radish slices, I think they said a pomegranate jam? The server recommended adding an extra poached egg on top, which I definitely agreed was a good idea. Automatically comes with a side salad, so a healthy meal out vs your popular greasy plates for hangovers. I just got basic black coffee and a homemade espresso cookie for dessert (good!), so found my bill of $24ish a bit expensive, but whatever. I'm still happy coming here if it's not too busy and noisy.

Thiago Andrade

The menu is simply the most unique I've seen in town. The atmosphere is a little too hipster for my taste, but it is definitely worth a visit once in a while. The portions are meant to be ordered tapas style, but don't be fooled thiking they're small. If you order 3 or 4, that should be enough for 2 people - if you're not in Hunger Games mode. Servers were great.

Trevor Bergmann

We will DEFINITELY be back again! Food was incredible and the 6 of us enjoyed a great experience. Awesome atmosphere and really friendly staff. Thanks for a great evening!

Inventive Canadian cuisine with Asian influences. This new spot's mantra is to serve your dining needs at any time of day from brunches, lunches, and shared plates at dinner. The servings at dinner are small so plan for about a couple of mains per person and leave room for their cookie and cream dessert which was excellent. The bbq plate as well as the kale salad was very good. The chicken was tasty drenched in its drippings but why stop there - it could use a bit more char to bring out more flavour. The artichoke dish could've used well, more artichokes! I think they can also serve a bit more seafood dishes being based in Halifax and all. The dining space was modern yet cozy. Service was attentive and pleasant. A good value for the quality of the food matched with great presentation. Keep iterating and Almonak would soon be on Halifax's must eat list.

We were recently at The Almonak for their first ever comedy night. We were really excited to go, as the cafe had been on our list for a few months. We arrived a few minutes early, and I have to say - right from the first minute we walked in the door, the team - all of them - were absolutely excellent; friendly, warm, and chatty. We felt so welcomed in. You can tell that they've put a lot of thought into the physical space too. From the plants on the walls and the ceiling, the clean and pristine washrooms, the open concept kitchen, right down to the name plate on our table - it felt like they were expecting us and that's a really awesome feeling and makes for such a great experience. The show itself was amazing. Such a great crowd and just the right size (in my opinion) with a good number of comedians. They did a great reminder at the beginning not to have loud conversations and to be respectful of the comedians. From the check-in at the door, to the protocol in-between comedians you can tell safety is a huge priority for them, too. One of the things I was most excited about was the select pub menu for the night. Excellent options, all of which were executed really well. My personal favourite was the cornbread waffle with pulled chicken and spring onions. Swoon! My husband really enjoyed the sausage roll. My only piece of feedback was that the portions felt a little small for the cost. We ordered four of the small plates (which were $6/ea) and one big plate (which was $12/ea) and we could have easily eaten more. Not bad when the only criticism I have of the food is that I wanted more of it. Ha! The quality was on point, and it made us even more excited to go back again another time to try their infamous brunch. Oh! I also had a London Fog and it was, quite frankly, the most delicious one I've ever tasted. I would go back simply for one of those. Overall, really really awesome little nook in Halifax. Highly recommend!

Supper seems to be geared toward a series of shared dishes. The food was delicious, and the server was helpful. Hard to get confirmation of ingredients for special diets, but the server verified with the kitchen numerous times when asked questions, and I didn't get sick after so that's a win!

Daniel Smith

Overall pretty good experience. There is a bit of a wait but they were communicative didn't make you wait too long. Ended up having the eggs benedict, was a bit disappointeddid the eggs were poached hard and they didn't check in on us to see how things were, but overall it was pretty tasty despite that. Vanilla latte and lavender latte were great.

The Big Boss and Dirty Benny were delicious, as was the Turmeric Latte with oat milk. Looking forward to tasting more of their Bennies, like the Far East.

I thoroughly enjoyed my first trip to Almonak. The staff were very friendly and attentive, and suggested an amazing meal (Cicharron + Frites). Can't wait to go back!

So impressed with the brunch! Tried the Farmer's Brekkie and everything on the plate was amazing (tofu, hashbrown, salad, toast, eggs...)!

What a wonderful new addition to the North End. Brunch was spot on. Lots of healthy options and a great dose of unique dishes. Look forward to checking out their dinner menu.

An expensive brunch, but well worth it if you're looking to treat yourself. I'll be honest, when I saw the small size of the eggs benny I was a bit disappointed. However, the quality and flavour was outstanding. The hollandaise sauce was so buttery and tasty, just how I like it. I thought the side pairing of fresh greens was a bit odd as I've grown accustomed to fresh fruit; but it worked. Pickled onions get me every time. To top it all off, we were offered a dessert. Dessert with brunch? Yes please! The dessert was an incredible little peanut butter and jam donut and it was glorious. All in all, I was very pleased with my first brunch here. My only complaint is that it was basically 2 bite eggs Benedict. For this reason I rated 4 stars instead of 5.

Excellent coffee! Definitely worth the climb down????

Amazing breakfast!! Try the mimosa flight ;)

Spectacular! the food was amazing and the service was exceptional from Sarah who took our reservation to Allison our server a great experience was provided. Mimosa flight was an added touch.

Our group of five had high expectations for dinner and we were not disappointed. The food was masterfully prepared... the cocktails were on par with Lot Six. They obsess over the smallest of details. The service was equally impressive. Almonak has raised the bar for the dining scene in Halifax.

We came for the community meal where you share several different dishes. A really cool idea. We choose artichokes in a buttermilk creme sauce. This was absolutely delicious. Next, we choose fingerling potatoes. Also, this was yummy. For a meat sharing plate we chose lamb. It too was delicious but do not pay attention to the medium rare claim. Finally, we chose the kale salad. It was our least favourite dish. We found it a little too sweet for our taste. Overall, the service, flavours and experience were great. We will be back.

I agree with the prices being a tad too high (comparable if not higher than Toronto brunch prices), but the quality is great, and I think it's worth it! So glad that Halifax finally has a decent high-quality brunch place. The eggs benedict was good, could have had a little more spice/flavor. The only complaint was the potatoes were roasted a little too much - some were too hard to eat. The waffle is insanely good - so fresh. You can taste the quality. I love that nothing was too salty or too sweet. The americano was amazing (and I'm picky with coffee). Super cute spot, nice service and good music. I can't wait to come back!

Had high expectations, but it was a pretty shoddy and expensive brunch. The eggs benedict hollandaise was flavourless, and the biscuit dense and stale. Latte was served in a water glass and went cold immediately. Service wasn't great either. I suggest you go elsewhere.

Had a reservation for a large group of people last Sunday at Almonak and we showed up and it was closed with nothing but a sign on the door that said they were closed all weekend due to a staff shortage. We received an email confirmation the day before for our reservation, and it was booked online so they easily could have cancelled it but just didn't bother to. Checked their social media and no posts regarding the closure either. I understand that everywhere in the city is facing staffing shortages, but at the very least you need to cancel existing reservations. Likely wont be back again due to this.

Delicious food, nice atmosphere, pleasant and helpful staff. Mid-priced - worth the money. Go visit - you will not be disappointed.

Went for my mom's birthday today for brunch. Server didnt know the feature quiche (she had to run into the restaurant from the patio to determine if/what kind of cheese was in it). Took a little while to order also. Once our food arrived, our server NEVER came back (pretty sure she was cut and just left). We also had to ask for side plates to share our food. After waiting for about 25 minutes after being completely finished with our food, I finally had to go inside and ask to pay, which is completely unacceptable. I have had good food and service experiences in the past here, but today was a complete fail. We would have loved to order something sweet and more drinks, but since our server left in the middle of service and her replacement was no where in sight, obviously that couldnt happen. Will probably not return.

Christie Morris

I’ve had an amazing brunch here and last night we went for dinner. It was such an fun, delicious experience! I loved trying lots of different flavours, between the two of us we shared five vegetarian plates and one dessert, and the staff were knowledgeable and welcoming. I do feel it could be a little cosier for the evening service so it doesn’t feel like a cafe, perhaps some candles or chair cushions but that doesn’t take away from us telling all our friends to go!!

Nate Campbell

Abby van der Jagt

Lively atmosphere, fast and friendly service. Delicious food. The biscuits for the Benny were light and fluffy but still strong enough to support the toppings. The avo toast was bright and citrusy salad was fresh! We were definitely up-sold on the half salad half hash browns and didn't realize it was an extra charge until the bill came. Gotta get those greens in so we weren't mad about it. You need a Caesar flight! We tried them all and although the beet and lemon options were delicious, I'm not sure they are actually "Caesars" pleasently surprised by the macalado beer Caesar.

Stopped for brunch on the weekend, was able to sit on their patio (was a bit chilly so they had blankets!). Service was quick, friendly and present. Food & drinks were extremely yummy and tasted so so healthy ????

I chose the only vegetarian main course the menu offered which was the gnocchi. This just so happened to be the most expensive dish on the menu at 24$... I was put off by this, but chose to forget and enjoy the food. The meal itself was delicious however, I counted just 8 pieces of gnocchi on the plate (along with veggies). I would have still been hungry had we not also ordered some bread, which just barely filled me up. It was a nicely decorated place with good food, but the small portions and steep prices make it hard to say I’d go back.

Almonak, just take all my money! Your food is so delicious. I’ve loved the brunches, lunches and dinners I’ve tried so far. Your staff add to the pleasant experience and you’re on my top favourite places to go in Halifax!

Fantastic restaurant, creative and delicious food that you wouldn't think to make at home, beautiful presentation and amazing staff. Can't wait to return, went for brunch and am looking forward to trying their weekday menu as well.

The menu is creative and diverse without being too big, and although there may have been more skill in the conceptualization of the menu than in the execution of the food, I've been surprised at how well the kitchen has pulled off some of the pretty complex plates - especially on the brunch menu. I've tried most of the Eggs Benedicts now, and each time I ordered I thought "this could be really bad if they don't do it right" (there's a butter chicken eggs benedict, a meatloaf eggs benedict....) but they nailed it every time. Shoutout to the tostada too! The only shade I'll throw is toward the pastry case - all show and no substance. I tried the sourdough cinnamon bun on two separate occasions because it's so beautiful and has the potential to be a serious new weekend addiction, but on both occasions it was just a very dry, hard, bland biscuit topped with what tasted like plain cream cheese. Macaron and lemon tart were also let-downs. Not sure how a place that seems to have such elegance and precision in other aspects could be proud of these baked goods and desserts, but that's certainly not enough to distract me from the otherwise exceptional new addition to the North End. As good as the food is, the service has been even better. I've dined in 4 times and taken coffee/sweets to go another 3 or 4 times now and every single time the server or the person at the bar has been genuinely friendly and engaged me in conversation. I've been educated on the history of the name, the story of the single mother they source their new coffee from, etc. It makes all the difference in the world to me when the staff are happy to be there and care about what they do. Lastly - and perhaps the thing that matters most of all to me - I'm seriously impressed with the coffee. The selection quality, the freshness, the preparation, and the passion for and knowledge of coffee that all the staff seem to share. I already miss the Timbertrain drip coffee, but the new stuff is great too. I beg you, Almonak, PLEASE continue to nerd out about the coffee! I haven't written a review for a restaurant in years. I'm just very grateful to have Almonak in Halifax and I pray that they keep pushing for quality and excellence because that's what, in my opinion, is making them stand out. I'm already rolling my eyes at the brunch line-ups that I know will come to be standard once more people have had a chance to enjoy Almonak and word gets out about how excellent it is!

Amazing food every time we dine at Almonak. Always served hot and fresh with a smile. Service is great aswell. Exception selection of coffees and always a great selection of beer to wash down a scrumptious meal. Almonak will never disappoint. Healthy food never tasted so good.

I recently planned a brunch last minute for a friends birthday. The team at Almonak was accommodating, quick to respond, and eager to have our business. The service and food quality is excellent. If you are looking for an establishment to host your next group function, this is the spot!

Mykle Jay

Learned from staff that bread dough was rising in a back room meant for storage - on a dirty floor!. Very unsanitary conditions. High Staff turnover due to poor management / frequent audible arguments. Original Chef has quit and staff steal stuff, including money. ABSOLUTE disregard for residential complex above with smells and machinery causing excess noise and what should be ventilated odors. Unsanitary conditions behind the scenes will prevent us from dining here. This place will not last very long...and that is a good thing.

We attended a dear friends birthday at Almonak last evening and the staff and venue were absolutely great! The food and drinks were delicious and the staff made us feel so welcome and comfortable it was like being in your own home with great friends and delicious food! Well done Almonak! Can't wait to head back for Brunch!

Services are great. Food (dinner) is well prepared. Share plates concept and the menu items are not new to my background. i must say, the one who designs the menu is very brave in terms of the menu items. One thing to note, there is fine print on the bottom of the menu to suggest to have biscuits to start. Biscuits go with the whip ash butter. No price tag, so thought the biscuit was to come as starter just like some restaurant would provide bread while you wait for your food to come. Food came and we asked for biscuit and only found out it needs to be ordered. We did order and didn't ask for the price nor the waitress mentioned how much. We were a group of 4 so had ordered 4. Biscuits were delicious and wouldn't mind paying $4 for 1 biscuit. We didn't really need the whip ash better because we only wanted some type of bread (in this case biscuit) to absorb the juice of couple dishes. We only found out later when we received the bill that the butter was $4, i guess $1 for 1 person. We didn't say anything. in case you go there, be aware of paying $5 for 1 biscuit with butter. Not sure about the ventilation there, if you are going somewhere else after the meals there, be aware that your clothes will smell like food, i had to air my jacket well the next day and put my clothes into wash immediately. very strong smell. Another observation is, since tables are very close to each other, we found we were like yelling at each other when talking. My throat hurt a bit after the meal.

Consistently delicious and flavourful dishes that will leave you planning your next visit! Five-star brunches, lunches and dinners with a fabulous coffee/bakery selection to boot.
