We have been going to Don's for decades just for the scons. We used them as hamburger buns, breakfast and lunch sandwiches and grilled cheese as have all of the neighbours on this stretch of the lake. They are now so thin that you can barely cut them in half. That would be fine if they were $2 a dozen. The 6 that are packed on the bottom are compressed and doughy. They are not what they used to be. We are all thinking our Don's Scons tradition is coming to an end. What a shame.

Weekend boat rides into Don’s Bakery have been a cottage staple in my family for over 40 years! You have not been to Muskoka if you have not experienced Don’s Scones. Every baked good in their store is made by hand and is ridiculously delicious! I am known by friends and family for buying a Don’s chocolate cake for every occasion, and refuse to eat bread in the winter months while their Bala store is closed! If Don’s ever needed and brand ambassador, they should probably pick me because there isn’t a thing they make that I haven’t eaten and enjoyed!

Used to be an amazing bakery, but lately they have been franchising and while the prices are the same or even increasing in some cases, the quality has been steadily decreasing, with most bakery items no longer even being made fresh in the store. Edit: From the owner's response, my mistake franchising was not the correct term. After asking employees on a number of occasions, some of the items I was told were not baked fresh at the store, if your employees were incorrect then I would be mistaken as well. My family has been buying from Don's for well over 40 years and we've noticed some decrease in quality in some of the regular items that we purchase.

Don's makes the best baked goods in Muskoka. Tall claim perhaps but the line ups back it up as true. The scones are the best you're going to find. The sweet treats be it danishes, tarts, pies, or anything else are all great. Chelsea buns, bath buns, and cookies are must buys for my family. Place an order via email or phone ahead to ensure you get your order and to skip the lines. We always go to find when we're in Muskoka, and you should too.

Like any food service establishment you are not likely to fall head over heals with absolutely everything on the menu. But when you do find those special items, they become a part of your routine. Such is the case with Dons bakery. Their scones, (think bread bun not typical English scone) hot dogs buns, garlic cheese bread, cinnamon buns, key lime pie and quiche to name a few, are part of the fabric of our cottage experience. Our morning trips to the bakery to stock up for the weekend baked goods are as important as a trip to the grocery store. Thank you for continuing to stay open during these difficult time and doing your part to keep employees and patrons safe.

If you like paying a lot of money for flour and water that's baked and then called "scones" then you need to go here. This place has changed hands a few times in the last decade with each new owner cranking the prices to where a dozen soft bun like (yet delicious) "scones" are over $6 dollars. Other reviews talk about high prices too. 12 buttertarts. Two dozen cookies: $35. They are a tradition though and the people just keep on rolling in paying the prices.

We live in the USA and we’re able to recently visit Canada and bought some of Dons Bakery butter tarts. These tarts are THE BEST EVER hands down! Flaky tender crust that is just like a homemade quality crust. The filling was divine and we only wish these were sold in our country! Please get them in our stores! Our family have been regular customers since the late 60s when we started coming to Bala. We're on the 3rd owner at Don's now. The prices are a bit crazy now, so we don't shop at Don's quite as often any more. The products are still excellent quality, but I'm starting to feel ripped off when I go there. The cinnamon buns were once my favorite, but they're now half the size (maybe less than) they once were for what seems like twice the price.Quality? .....No question, still great quality (5 stars). Value? Nope, sorry that get's a fail.(1 star)...so i guess Don's gets 3 stars. That seems fair. (Bakeries are never "cheap" and this one is open only 4 months a year. However I only want to be a customer, I don't what to subsidize what has always been a going concern)

Don's Bakery in #Bala is nothing short of amazing in all aspects. For over 40 years I've been taking my children, and now grandkids to enjoy the first rate experience of visiting Don's Bakery early Saturday or Sunday morning. The aroma just walking in! #Scones, #applefritters ( of course - I AM the Fritter King!) , donuts and crullers for the kids... cinnamon buns...cookies.. pies...the list is endless. What Jana & Bryan (the owners) have achieved during COVID is extraordinary. With a little planning, sometimes we order online, and that's easy, with pick up being a snap! Pre-covid, we used to take a number and socialize a little bit - now it's proper distancing with 'feet' on the floor to keep everyone orderly. You might wait a bit...but the wait is worth it.... and what local bakery worth its salt is not busy on weekends? It's actually nice to slow the world down a little bit while we contemplate back bacon on a scone... or a fritter with a coffee. Fact is, we are privileged to have access to such a high quality friendly bakery that continues to be a #MuskokaTradition.

Once again, service at Don's is provided by teens with brutal attitude, OR they've never been taught how to deal with the public. Is it REALLY too much to ask if, at opening, are there any cookies in the back (as the case was still empty)? The single word answer 'no', accompanying roll of the eyes, and not even the SLIGHTEST attempt to put any effort into the job is totally unacceptable. This is not the first time... I try to avoid Don's whenever possible but convenience (not quality) is sometimes the winning factor.

Dons Bakery has gone downhill so far and so fast from what it was. For 50 years you could go in and take a number and expect to wait 10-15 minutes at a maximum. Always lots of staff to wait on you and you could get scones up to at least 3PM. As soon as the new owners took over the time doubled to at least 30-35 minutes. Now the scones are sold out be 11AM or earlier. Today people were lined up before it opened at 9 and the scones were sold out by 10AM NOW you have to order 48 hours in advance by on line. What do the people that don’t have computer access do? So now you have to line up for minimum 30-40 minutes before they open plus another 10-15 while you get what you want depending if they haven’t already been sold out of scones. I have totally given up on Dons. After 65 years of going there I am NEVER GOING BACK THERE AGain. They should study this takeover in business school on how not to run a business. B. Bond

If i could post I would but website clearly states Order Pick up Available Tuesday-Friday 9:30 am-5:00 pm I called ahead at Barrie store and they said pickup is possible from parking lot but they were closing soon. why post any hours if shop closes when they wish. I get it Friday afternoons but there was definite misunerstandings here.

This is an okay bakery. I like the product but it seems small and overpriced for what you get. There are definitely some real winner items though; the brownie and blueberry tarts. That said the staff doesn't seem to be very confident in their product knowledge. But that can be attributed to them being seasonal and you can only get what you get with seasonal staff in a seasonal town. It's worth a trip but I'd say it's better to pre-order and things sell out quick and it's a pain to go all the way and not get what you want.

Went here as a kid. Grew up in bala in the summers and always loved Don's Bakery. Recently found myself bringing my kid to the same lake and all the usual hangouts. We visited Dons Bakery twice on our Monday to Friday in the area, but the place we were staying at delivered treats from them daily. Weather you've got a sweet tooth or are in need of some bread/buns this is the place to go. The peanut butter cookies were always my favourite and still deliver as they were when I was a kid. A must stop when youre anywhere in Muskoka... its worth the trip!

Before covid they expected you to come in and pick a number even though you had already placed the order so you still had to line up When Diane had the store it was much better run. Their number one item is there scones but if you don’t get there by 11am Much of the time they are sold out Because they make it so hard to place orders easily it is just a zoo trying to purchase on weekends . They have no clue how to do retail. Time to use another bakery

Sad to see so many petty reviews of a small business. My experience was great, but even if it hadn't been, I would cut some slack based on the current challenges all businesses face. But it comes down to this: the quality. I bought half a dozen butter tarts, and they were fresh and delicious.

The hardest thing about ordering from Dons Bakery is choosing what to order as everything is soooo good. I recently tried the apple fritter donut and the bath buns. I’m hooked !! The scones are great for sandwiches but also delicious toasted with jam for breakfast (great flavour). Another favourite are the meat pies which are very tasty. Hats off to the owners for the on line ordering and their “safe food” initiative... can’t imagine how much extra work is involved during this pandemic.... Amazing bakery! Everything from bread to cinnamon rolls to butter tarts to donuts were delicious. Great selection of products and very friendly service. Although this bakery is trying to do everything it can to be covid safe, I'm extremely disappointed in the patrons that were in the store around noon on Sunday October 10th, there was absolutely no social distancing, there shouldn't been able to get any more than four customers at a time in this store and there were 14 and one woman in a pink jacket who kept pushing up against me. That part was bad.

I’m not exaggerating when I say I dream of Don’s Bakery. To me it is the quintessential bakery. How can I visit the family cottage without dropping in to get cinnamon buns, scones, or a Key lime pie? Special shout out to the butternut square. I always feel happy and well looked after when I visit. Seeing the bustling bakery with staff working hard in the front and back is very heartwarming. If you’re in Bala, be sure to stop by!

I grew up in Bala and worked at Don's Bakery for years. Since the change in ownership things have changed and not for the better. The wait times are longer, staff is more concerned with cleaning pans in the back then serving the customer and valuable serving areas have been changed to display areas for new products. Also there are too many new products, it is starting to loose its small town bake shop feel.The increase in products is leading to lack of quality in products, the apple fritters are great but half of the time they are under baked and raw in the middle. I love Don's but am disappointed and when I talk to locals and cottagers they feel they overpaid and get poor service and are going else where for baked goods- Gravenhurst Bakery!! Don's is a Bala landmark and I hope the new owners fix things….. they are changing the original recipes from 1947, don’t mess with a good thing. Also note, they do baking in the evenings so the fact that you have to give them 48 h notice for an order is poor, 24h is plenty be better organized.

I have been in a few times recently and am growing concerned that a highschool aged kid may be their newest baker. He seems to be the one bringing all the "hot racks" out. Unless he is just a helper to the baker? I see you mention being "understaffed", but there is no way this is valid reasoning for a highschool student (who probably doesn't have a care in the world and doesn't want to be there) to be running the oven at what used to be a respected establishment. I haven't had any problems with the quality of the products I have bought, so I am hoping that I'm wrong and he is just a helper.

A classic to visit when in Bala. Home to the World Famous Buttertarts as said in the New York Times and its so true. I had to check it out for myself. Amazing! You need to go early in the morning to get the best selection on bread because it's a hot commodity among the cottagers. A cute little shop right next to the Campus Crew store. Take your wallet because there are so many amazing things to get here it’s hard to decide! I’ve never had anything I didn’t like. Some things run out early with the summer crowds. Go early and get your number as soon as you go in. If you’re organized and know what you want you can order the day ahead by 1pm. Donuts, squares, cinnamon rolls, scones, fresh bread, sausage rolls-you can’t go wrong.

Stopped in here on a drive around Muskoka and loved it. Ordered a sausage roll that without even being heated up was amazing. Also bought some cookies off the discount shelf. They were yummy and a great price. I love that they sell off the "broken" stuff rather than throwing it out. If you are in the area it is worth the stop.
