Great service and great food! They were able to fulfil my order on the same day I called (I did call right when they opened)! I recommend the Bailey's white chocolate cake, I'm sure the dark chocolate cake is delicious as well. It's not as sweet as I thought but still had a lot of flavour. I also grabbed the red velvet and Earl Grey donuts which were also very good! Those were a bit on the sweeter side. Definitely one of the best cake shops in Richmond/steveston if you don't want fruit cakes from T&T.

If you're looking for some of the best cakes, pies or cupcakes in Richmond then the Diplomat Bakery is the place you want to go. As a regular patron, you'll often find me munching on a fresh muffin or pastry while I read the newspaper or catch up on the blogs I read - I'm a big fan of the long john! If there were one wish, it would be an upgrade to the quality of the coffee & espresso beverages they serve - the coffee is quite bitter & often the speciality drinks don't really feel all that special, but I guess that's to be expected at a bakery. One tip - if you come on a weekend where there's good weather, you might be hard pressed to find a seat as the local bike community uses the Diplomat as a pitstop and can easily take the place over.

Diplomat Bakery has a ton of potential. My highlights included a very generous selection of cakes, pastries and savoury items. A decent menu of espresso drinks and a good amount of seating. Prices ranges from $2 to $4 for different items. What I thought it lacked was an oven to heat the pastries in. We had our sausage rolls microwaved which lead to chewy pastry and an average experience. Secondly, the coffee. If you could pair diplomat with exceptional coffee it would be a force to reckon with. I Would go back again to try some of their doughnuts and a slice of cake as they looked well presented and fair priced.

A small out of the way bakery off Steveston. It makes an exellent stop for people walking or biking along the dykes. However, there are limited parking spots in the parking lot behind the bakery. In addition to the normal baked goods such as muffins and cookies, they also offer cake by the slices. The cake slices are usually quite large and very filling. you can get just about any of the full cake they offer for preorder as slices, which make it great for when you have a cake craving but can't eat a full cake. For me, the Chocolate Diplomat Cake is the best item they have here. It is similar to a Napoleon cake but with a twist. In between the layers of puff pastries is thin layers of chocolate. It adds just the right amount of richness to the cake, making it perfect for celebrations. Sadly, the Chocolate Diplomat Cake is only avaliable as a full cake meaning you can't just buy slices of it.

FOOD (Overall rating 2/5) Matcha Donut (3/5) - white chocolate and matcha cream are good, not too sweet and had a strong matcha taste. Salted Caramel Donut (1/5) - this was disappointing. They sprinkled too much coarse salt on top of the caramel cream, making the donut too salty to eat and in the end we had to scrape off the cream. Earl Grey Donut (1/5) - the donut (cake part) had a strong earl grey taste, but the cream on top tasted bland. Napoleon Cake (2/5) - cream was good, but the pastry layers were not crispy and felt a little soggy. Carrot Cake (2/5) - two scores because the cream had good cream cheese flavour, but the actual cake had a crumbly texture and not moist enough. I’ve had better carrot cake at Purebread. SERVICE (0/5) - COMING HERE RUINED OUR DAY. We were helped by an asian girl with glasses. From the get go she yelled everything she said, but we gave her the benefit of the doubt and thought she was just trying to speak through her mask and the plastic barriers. As I started to speak, “Can I get a matcha donut and an earl grey…” She asked/yelled at us: HOW MANY ARE YOU GETTING? I said, “Just one of each.” She yelled: “NO, HOW MANY?” I started to count, “One matcha donut, one earl grey—” and she cut me off and she yelled, “NO, HOW MANY ARE YOU GETTING? I NEED TO KNOW THE SIZE OF THE BOX.” By now we were getting uncomfortable and said, “Maybe four. (we’re still deciding)” She started to put one donut in the box, then the other, “AND THEN?” I said, “One Napoleon slice, and one Carrot cake slice.” This is where she got very very aggressive and frowned, “WEREN’T YOU GETTING DONUTS?” We were speechless. She cut us off before we could even finish telling her our order and she was blaming the customer for not telling her what we wanted? If she had let us finish telling her she would be able to determine what size of box to use. Also, we didn’t know we have to order only donuts. This isn’t Tim Hortons, where we have to order donuts by the dozen or 1/2 dozen. So we calmly told her, “No we’re not just getting donuts, and it’s okay to put everything into one box.” But when we decided to add an additional donut (which fits into the box), she actually shook her head at us and gave us an annoyed sigh. When we left the store holding that box of donuts, we felt so upset. We've never encountered this kind of treatment or issue at any other bakeries we've been to. OVERALL: We saw all the good ratings and came all the way to this bakery, we had high expectations and were excited to try. Honestly, the pastry is overrated and isn’t worth coming for, much less getting treated this way. The experience was frustrating and stressful due to the attitude of the server. We will not go back for the pastry and will not recommend this bakery to others.

Diplomat bakery is a hidden store in Southern Richmond. They offer a unique doughnut with variety flavourful surprisingly non-sweet cream on its top. Matcha is one specific taste that caught my attention. The Doughnut itself contains a strong essence and the same as the cream on top that the matcha can be identified. While enjoying the sweets, matching with a cup of bold nutty flavour late and a hint of well balanced acidic aroma is a simple stratification. This bakery also offers many fabulous cheesecakes. Anyone who is considering self a sweet lover should visit this neat store.

Busy little place, but always great desserts and treats! Staff are friendly and fast. They also have great coffee, maybe ask for it extra hot though if you like a hot latte! (They also have soy milk available!) There’s no actual parking for the place but there’s lots of street parking around. Overall, love to come here once in a while for a treat :)

Great bakery, if a bit off the beaten path. Happy staff, clean and bright store. Bought a mango cheesecake, which is really a mango cheese and sponge cake. It was fantastic. Light, sweet and tangy at the same time. The cheese was smooth and the glaze was amazing. Bonus: it was for a birthday celebration and they put the Happy Birthday on the cake in just a few minutes. Enough time for me to buy some pastries. A literal hidden gem.

We decided to try Diplomat instead of our regular spot as we wanted some more food options. When you are riding, coffee and pastries are a must. As well as great bike parking. Diplomat has both. We were delighted to find an excellent assortment of treats to order from. Great coffee and croissants. Great service too. A little cramped but there is lots of seating outside for warmer days.

My favourite bakery in all of Richmond. I don’t discriminate when it comes to any of the pastries, but my personal favourite would have to be the Diplomat Cake, which won’t be on the menu and is also something you have to order ahead of time, but my goodness is it worth it. It’s an incredibly well family run establishment that I’ve been frequenting since it’s old location on Moncton St in the heart Steveston. It’s now a lot bigger and still feels like home in its 2rd location. Can not recommend this place enough, the service, feel of the place and pastries will blow your mind!

Great place for good bread and great treats. I come here often. However, I ordered a Bailey's cake. I found that it had no taste of Bailey's. Calling the shop they apologized saying there chef has reduced the amount of Bailey's due to previous complaints. Regardless. A delicious cake.

A true hidden gem near Steveston area!!! This little small coffee shop has the one thing I love and absolutely adore. Cakes. Their cake variety is endless so many options. And currently they have a deal where 6 cakes is only $22! We got the tiramisu, hazelnut cake, mango cheesecake, blueberry cheesecake, triple chocolate, and the Bailey chocolate cake! • My favorite one out of the 6 is a battle between the hazelnut chocolate cake and the triple chocolate cake! The cakes were super moist, chocolatey, and delicious! I loved how the hazelnut had a crunchy bottom while the rest of the cake was creamy and moist! The taste of hazelnut was present and not too overpowering! • The triple chocolate cake was super moist and it’s definitely a cake that satisfies your cravings for chocolate. I love chocolate cake and this one was one of the moistest cakes I’ve had. The chocolate moose inside the cake adds a nice texture to the cake, and the dark chocolate coating on the outer side of the cake was just the perfect amount. • Overall the cakes were good, not too sweet (don’t get the blueberry cheesecake, it wasn’t that good and had an artificial and odd flavouring at least to me) but do get the chocolate cake!????. ——————————————— Only thing that sucked and made my rating go hella down was the customer service, the girl who helped us rolled her eyes while my mom and I took our time deciding what cakes to buy. And rushed us. If only service was better the rating would’ve been higher

Been to Diplomat bakery 3 times over 3 years and it's gotten worse every time. Went there today. There was a table of 6 middle aged people not eating and not drinking (their tables were clear) just sitting taking up prime spots. We waited for 10 mins they kept on chatting then we walked up with a stroller and 2 kids under 5yrs old and asked the woman at the front of we can grab a table. She just said they were eating. She looked miserable no smile no hello NOTHING. The desserts are just ok. Cakes slices are small and the charge you $4 for a donut... seriously! Do yourself a favor and walk 3 mins around the corner and go to Sanctuary cafe.

Their donuts are absolutely fantastic. Try the earl grey donut (best paired with london fog; or if that’s too much tea, have it with coffee). Just the right sweetness; really great texture to the donut (it’s not chewy like crispy creme but more of a cake structure). There is really a complexity of flavoring at play here with the novelty flavors. Do be aware of the Black Forest cake: the cherry liquor is quite strong. COVID limitation is no indoor seating, limited customer in the store, sanitation and mask-wearing.

This place could be so much better. How about some deli styled sandwiches? The pre made sandwiches are kind of plain but the filling does taste good and the prices are very reasonable. Staff doesn't really seem like they want to work. Service is excruciating slow. When I was there, there were 2 girls working and a long line up. One girl was taking 10 minutes to make a single expresso. The other girl refused to take orders and just looked at everyone blankly while she folded a stack of cardboard cake boxes. If you don't want to help customers and are just going to fold boxes, then do it in the back out of sight of angry customers who are growing impatient at the bad service. The owner is a very nice guy but very busy doing the actual baking. My advice? Higher an extra counter person and keep the box folder in the back where she can't be seen. Baked goods and pastries are quite good and well priced. I am going back to try the wraps. If the service is bad again, this will be my last time. I noticed other customers leave without ordering. This is money walking out of the door that could have been walking into the owners wallet. Will one more staff break the bank? When I got my order I went outside to grab a table. My hands were full. In front of me was one of the staff who was delivering an order. I was right behind her and she refused to hold the door for me. She let it slam in my face. Someone teach her to smile and teach her customer service. Message to the owner: Don't let some minimum wage employees ruin your business. Front end staff will make or break your business.

It was my first time at the Diplomat Bakery. I was told that the doughnuts were very good. I went to go try them and told the staff to recommend any doughnut. They recommend a new doughnut recipe they made today and I loved it! Very friendly staff and great food. Would definitely go again.

My boyfriend bought me cakes for my birthday and I have to say, out of these different flavor my favorite is torn between tiramisu and triple chocolate. The tiramisu has just enough coffee flavor and the cream is light. The triple chocolate mousse is so smooth and flavor. Not too strong and not too sweet. It’s perfect. Highly recommend this shop!

If you want a cake for desert, this is a place to buy it from. Want a whole cake to celebrate a special occasion, all the more reason to buy it from Diplomat Bakery. As a family, when we have a family event, we normally order a whole cake from Diplomat. This tradition has been passed on to my kids who are adults now, and they too order from this place when they have get togethers with their friends. I highly recommend their Triple Chocolate Mousse Cake! But don't order it all. Leave some for me.

The cakes and pastries are always fresh. The store offers a "buy 5 slices get one free" which is lovely for sharing and allows you to buy assorted flavors. They also have donuts (they are similar to fluffy cakes) in delicate flavours like matcha, Earl Grey. These donuts are not greasy at all and will not leave you feeling guilty. The staff are cheery and the store operates in observance of COVID 19 safety measures. The store limits 3 customers at a time and there are plexy windows. Staff also use gloves. You may be in a slight line up but the wait is worth it.

Very nice store front. No dining in at the moment and limit 6 customer inside. Lots of choices of different cake/donuts/Danish/muffins to choose from. They also have gluten free options. My favourite there is their mango cheese cake, and it never disappoint!! I'd love to try other cakes I just don't have the stomach space for it!!

Don't come here for donuts. 1 point for selection 1 point aesthetic They have a huge selection of other things I didn't try (tarts, cakes, and even samosas!) Everything looks good. Donuts are actually miniature cakes, not donuts. They are extremely oily and the flavours are not in harmony. It gives me shivers thinking about how these things taste.

This little bakery if you dont know bout already has been in Richmond for over 20 years...its my personal favorite place.. used to be in the village but now located just a little bit over a few streets.. llots to choose from a simple coffee to sausage rolls and cookies...lots of selections of cakes like red velvet...chocolate moose cake...cheesecakes...and their famous napolean diplomat cake...go early or they will run out...a few seats...somewhat kids friendly ...eat outside by the river...even dog friendly ...street parking ...a must try...

My families go to cake place in Richmond. Whenever we have a friend's or family birthday we bring a cake from here. Very nice inside the shop and they even have tables outside so you can enjoy some fresh air with your coffee and cake. They have other pastries that are all also very tasty. Go to flavours are the Triple Chocolate Mousse or the Red Velvet. Delicious!

Went here for the first time. Bought a dozen. Kind of expensive but read good reviews so I wanted to try them. Loved ube. I don't know a lot of places who sells ube flavour. Beware though cause the lady there is super rude! First she rolled her eyes that I needed a minute to decide what to get (fyi, there were no other customers except for me and my gf). Second, she gets annoyed because even though I was almost shouting, she still couldn't hear me. Music was really loud but it didn't occur to her to turn it down? And 3rd, no thank you or anything. She slams my box on the counter!

The cakes are beautifully made. $4.95 per slice; buy 5, get 1 free. I got the tiramisu and red velvet today. The red velvet is too sweet for my liking. When I asked the lady, she did say yes it's sweet. She did not lie. The layers are distinct, and the chocolate felt superior. It was good, although sweet. The tiramisu was the best. So light, fluffy, smells great and less sweet. It was perfect. Once again, beautiful layers!

What a lovely store. It’s nice and bright and new. They had a great selection. I ended up there by accident. I originally went in thinking I would get a piece of blackforest cake for my dessert later , but they don’t sell it by the piece. I ended up getting a salted carmel donut...delicious! It was tasty and light. It had cream inside. A real winner. I also got a cinnamon bun.... unbelievable! The flavour of the cinammon was pungent and fresh tasting. This place is on my list for sure!

The new location is beautiful inside and the desserts and pastries are as tempting and delicious as ever. There is only one flaw: the music. They play one of the local radio stations at quite a loud level - at least to my sensitive ears. I like to visit a cafe to sit and chat with my friends, not listen to the news or someone else's taste in music. I took off one star for that reason.

Go here and prepare to leave with more than you anticipated. The Diplomat is in a fast growing area which is what brought me into the area. Driving by you can see well lit cases of every treat you have ever wanted. That prompted a pull over and pop in. The lady behind the counter was prompt and very kind when giving some information about the business. I went in thinking 1 item would do but very quickly you realize that 2 is kind of the min when you see how good it looks. My choices were the ham and cheese croissant, and a choc chip muffin. Upon my first bite of the croissant I said out loud "this is the best darn thing I have ever tasted". So curiosity got the cat and I had to try the muffin, and I am pleased to report that the same WOW was had with that. Make the trip here and try some of the goodies. We will be coming back soon.

A wide range of baked goods to choose from here with one cabinet full of small pastries and another full of cakes available by the slice or as a whole. There is also a small selection of sandwiches & savoury items. The inside of the cafe is fairly small, with about 9 stools along the bar by the window & 3 small round tables. I had the sausage roll which was heated up, but the flakey-ness of the pastry was lost when it was microwaved. The apple danish had crispy sugar crusted pastry and apple filling which wasn't overly sweet. I enjoyed my danish more than the roll. I think they could benefit in getting a small oven to heat items so the pastries don't lose their texture. Otherwise, a cute & friendly cafe with lots of sweet bakery items - I'd recommend this to others.

This place place is so good! I’ve bought a few cakes here and stopped by for coffee. It’s a bit out of the way for me but I’d still recommend the trek for those that live outside of Steveston or Richmond! It can get busy and sometimes there’s only one person. The parking is a bit difficult.

Excellent tasting coffee pairs perfectly with pastries and cakes. My favorite is the almond croissant. Crispy on the outside, topped with roasted almond, and tenderly creamy on the inside. I always ask for it to get warmed up a tiny bit on a paper bag. Lovely for biting into and the crumbs are caught in the bag as you bite.
