A Jewish Montreal institution, Cheskie's is worth experiencing. There was a lineup outside when I came on a Thursday morning, but it moved quickly. Oh are the babkas are mouthwatering! I've been wanting to try them for a while and they did not disappoint. Deep, rich chocolate in every pillowy bite! I also got a cheese crown, which was also soft and not too sweet, perfect for an afternoon/teatime snack. Have yet to dig into two other things I bought but didn't know the name of, but I'm sure I'll be back!

I live too gosh darn close to this place, it is hard to resist dropping in on the daily. Always a bit busy, excellent pastries and desserts, the classic is the chocolate babka, but if you like a cinnamon roll I would actually recommend a cinnamon babka instead. My all time favorite is a cheese crown, they come in 2 sizes and if you enjoy cheesecake at all I’d give them a try! Also they look like mini crowns which is adorable. A must go if you are nearby.

No thanks! I was in the neighbourhood, and one of my friends suggested I try Cheskie's. I browsed their window from the outside, and decided to give it a go. As I enter the shop, there are two (what I assume were) hasidic women behind the counter. I should mention, that I am tall, blond and blue eyed, so very much not Jewish looking. As I enter the shop, the two women, didn't so much ran, as flew into the backroom. I stood there waiting for about 10 minutes, while they were hiding (I assume) in the backroom. Finally I left, disgusted by what I can only assume was prejudice. So, no, I will not recommend Cheskie's.

Delicious! The staff is very sweet, I think it's the owner's daughters working there. They were very helpful when I asked for recommendations on what I should try. Everything was incredible and delicious. Tried a variety of pastries and breads. (one filled with potato was one of the best things I have ever eaten in my life). Took a walk around the area with my daughter and had to stop in for some treats, so glad we did!!!!!

Is a good rugelach worth catching Covid? The bakery is delicious, but I was disappointed to see there are essentially no sanitary measures to ensure customers are and feel safe. The shop is still as crowded as usual, there is no regulation of the amount of people, even though it's a really narrow space.

I wish I had photos but every time we stop at Montreal, we go here just to get the chocolate babka to go and for the car ride we grab their cookies or jelly filled donuts. Love this place. They are always packed but they are so efficient that you don't have to wait long.

I saw some YouTube videos talking about how it’s the best Jewish bakery around. I got what they recommended. I tried their babka, too sweet. Tried the black and white cookie, too sweet. Bought a Swiss roll from there, no flavour and too sweet. Overloading something with sugar doesn’t necessarily make it tasty. I liked the feel of the place, service was good, and enjoy being around the Jewish community. I’m disappointed the pastries weren’t better. Then again, I haven’t tried their other items not their bread. I can judge too harshly. For this reason I’m giving it a 3/5

The dang cheese danish things are dang delicious. The cinnamon things are good too, though they have an unpleasant aftertaste. It's all very unhealthy and chock full of trans fat, on top of the usual unhealthy stuff though, due to good ole kosher.

Being an Indian, I had a completely new experience at a Jewish bakery. The bakery is always busy and you see people in line for their orders. I had a lot of products and for me, the babka was really a standout. I had seen a lot of reviews and really feel every one is correct..its just amazing. Second i would recommend you try their cheesecake. It was an oval cylinder shaped cheesecake that had solid crust on 2 sides. This made is so unique and even the taste of cheesecake was amazing and fresh. Definitely worth visiting. It is also super cheap according to me. I had garlic bread and onion bread they were so soft that i had not imagined. Something that could melt when eaten. I would say Cheskie has earned its name through years.

Dangerously delicious. Note, not open on Saturdays (for Sabbath). Mini crown heads (little mini pastries gathered at the top to appear like a crown, with cream cheese interior, can also be dusted with icing powder) are decadent. The pastry cones filled with cream, chocolate or custard and drizzled with chocolate are divine. Beautiful breads and obviously go there for the babka as well!

This particular bakery is owned by some Belz Ultra-Orthodox, though you rarely see them, since the service people are usually non-Jewish.

Thanks Instagram for exposing Cheskies Babka to us :) They were open on Christmas Eve when everything else was closed :) It looks a bit run down and displays/floor could be cleaner... A point off for not having any prices anywhere - we bought babka, box of jam cookies and 4 pastries. It came to 70CAD (not cheap). Server didn't give us a receipt... all this aside, baked goods were really nice :)

What a weird experience. Everyone inside looks anointed. The costumers , two Jewish orthodox and a young girl. Nobody say hello or thanks, or anything. The lady in the cashier ask to one of the guys if he wants cream for the cafe and he didn’t even answer. But then with us was all different, I said hello and smile, and the lady smiled at me and was really nice. They only had 1/2 Babka , but whit cinnamon. I took it, it was good , but 9$ is a little expensive. Then we had some other pastries, all to go and when we arrived home , 2 where missing. Overall it was good , but not excellent.

I've only been in Montreal for a few months, but Boulangerie Cheskie is already one of my favorite things about the city. The breads and baked goods are exceptional, and the prices (which are by weight rather than per item) are very good. The chocolate babka is probably their best known treat (and it IS fantastic), but it's hard to go wrong with anything they have on offer.

Very courteous staff, and great pastries. You have to try their marble cake, it's out of this world. Some of the negative reviews smacked of intolerance toward Chasidic Jews. How sad. Everything at Cheskie's is sold by weight and the bill can get a little pricey, but their stuff stands out and is far better than most of the other kosher bakeries in town. If you're lucky, you'll walk in on a day that Cheskie, the owner, is singing along with the Yossele Rosenblatt cantorial recordings he has blaring in the back store. No wonder there's joy in every one of these fresh pastries!

This is a great place to find sweets well baked. The prices are wonderful, get prepared to ask for more than one kind of bakery. Unfortunately I've never been able to get the name of the sweets they have, but everyone pretty much points what they want. Also make sure to try their tuna sandwiches, they are delicious. So far no one's mentioned that you don't pay taxes, I just realized today when paying my bill, how cool is that?!

I ordered a customized chocolate cake for my birthday in Nov 2021. WORST CHOCOLATE CAKE EVERRRR!! Ruined my birthday. I don't know what ingredients they use for the cake but it's worse than a third world country and I was born in one and I have had some really bad cakes but this one tops them all. The next day I got high and was really hungry and had nothing in the refrigerator to eat, still didn't eat the cake and rather ate Apple dipped in Nutella, imagine that. Threw the cake in the garbage even though it was for my birthday, it was so bad. I don't know who gave them such high reviews!!!

Found this lovely little bakery while walking around Mile End. There was a line but the staff was very friendly and efficient, they also answered all my questions and helped me decide between the choices. The place smells like fresh bread and sunshine, with cute display of cookies, pastries, cupcakes and breads. I bought chocolate hazelnut bars (to die for. crunchy, chocolate-y like a cross between Kit Kat and Ferrero Rocher), potato knishes (a little mild for me but lots of stuffing and good size) and the newyork style black white cookies (authentic taste, giant size). Definitely visit if you’re in the area it’s a hidden gem

Based on the Discover Montréal YouTube video from September 28th 2021, I made the drive with my wife and daughter to visit and sample their wares on Sunday, October 10th 2021. It was 4 hours before closing, and already they had very little food left to sell. I asked one of the kitchen workers if there was more coming out soon and he said no, that it was more a factor of not being able to get some of the ingredients to make the desserts. Okay, they still had a few pieces of Babka left so we bought a few as well as a cookie and a small, cold cheese filled pastry I didn't get the name of. To be clear, the food was all very delicious, so that was fine. I'm leaving out 3 stars though, because the woman who served us was the absolute worst counter person I've been served by in years. She had zero interest in having to answer any questions whatsoever and just rudely acted like our being there to buy their food was wasting her precious time. She behaved as if she didn't even want to be there. She was like this with the 2 customers that were there before us as well as the one after us, so it wasn't personal, it's just the way she is to everyone. I don't care how good any food is. Nothing will make me stay away forever faster than a horrible front line employee who acts like she is somehow doing us a favour. There were 3 women at the front, the rude one was the tallest one. To the owner of Cheskie: Get rid of her before she gets rid of more of your customers....

A small kosher bakery in the heart of Outremont. Makes amazing pastries and danishes. Always check the back shelf to see if they just took out any chocolate or cinnamon danishes. The cheese ones are also really good. The place itself is quite small and usually busy but it’s open until 11 pm most nights which makes it very accessible.

I love this bakery! Their selection is mostly sweet and the cashiers made sure to point that out when I asked if there was something savoury. The donuts, chocolate babka and the round cheesecakes are to DIE FOR. I bring their sweets home to Vancouver because they’re all what my parents ask for. Sometimes the service can be a bit dicey but they’re quick and serve people efficiently.

Chocolate babka like nothing else. Have bee going for fifteen years, and here's to hoping another 30 more. Today I saw someone order a tuna sandwich, I didn't know they did sandwiches. He said they're awesome. So I tried one the girl at the register recommended one on the fresh onion bun that just came out. It was perfect. We also got to try a white Russian babka today. It was cheese based, quite good. Happy as always.

I first heard of Cheskie's through a colleague of mine. I have yet to taste a chocolate babka better than Cheskie's. I'm from Toronto and everytime I head to Montreal I make a Cheskie's run for family and friends back home. Besides the babka you can find many other amazing pastries freshly baked. The shop is clean and has a typical old school bakery feel which is nice. The location is in a nice area to explore in Montreal as well.

I was debating going in but some lovely ladies, one of whom works there, gave me recommendations and this is hands down my favourite bakery in this area now. Walking in, the aroma is mouthwatering. Their fresh chocolate babkas and cheese crowns are divine. The cost of the baked goods are unbeatable. For 3 items, I believe I spent about $3.50. I would highly recommend this place.

Chocolate babka cake was super good and moist! Didnt go stale even after a week, however they do not offer a big selection of desserts but they are open late . The cost of the bubka depends on weight so about 12 dollars.

Though I'm not a fan of their other pastries (too dry or too doughy), I really enjoy their babka. It's rich, moist, chocolatey, and not too sweet. I would definitely recommend this place for that in particular. Keep in mind that they charge by weight.

Chanced upon this bakery in Montreal on our way back to Toronto. Amazing bakery with the most delicious of freshly baked goods. The rum balls were just out of this world and so was everything else we asked them to recommend. Special shout out to the kind and very friendly baker who was very helpful.
