Would not recommend if you deal with this firm remotely (from another province or country).
I had a few basic estate matters, 3 administration renunciations, 1 administration application, 4 affidavits.
Legal admin (Yolande) provided conflicting information to different parties involved which significantly extended the process. There should be some level of competence at this level.
Stephen Schmidt on the other hand, provided absolutely no updates, did not return phone calls or e-mails upon follow ups, certainly did not review any of admin staff work as initial copies contained spelling mistakes of surnames and addresses.
In my line of work, they wouldn't last the probation period.
As it stands, application process was ongoing since November of 2018, R&R wasted about 6-8 months of time while bills accrued.
The timing of the legal work is border line negligent and would deserve a formal complaint with the law society but I’d leave that to the next client.
Update on the case and what potential customers may consider doing in regards to their more basic estate matters.
It took 2 weeks to obtain the order of administration from the bench after R&R failed to do so. This required explanatory letter to judge of case at hand, unnecessary but required MB residency and roughly 4 months for title changes, tax filings, clearance letters and property sale/distribution.
Your potential course of action:
1. Fire R&R, i.e serve with notice to appear in person instead, both R&R and probate desk.
2. Visit probate/estate desk, ask the clerk on whats needed to be filed, obtain form numbers, go online, print, fill out and wait. Get rejected, pay 5 dollar fee, fix and file again. Rinse and repeat, can be frustrating but you have some ability to control it, obtain updates/feedback and certainly much more timely than R&R process.
Best of luck to everyone needing legal assistance. I can tell you that even with my full time job and travel commitments, you can do a much better job on your own.
