i spoke to Mr Cooper on the phone to see if he would be a good fit for a case. He would not even let me ask questions to ensure he was the right fit or background or was interested in my case unless I paid him per hour and could not give me an estimate of how many hours he would have to take to look over the file basically meaning I would have to sign a blank cheque with no guarantee that he would take the case. He said on the phone after 5 mins that he could not spend any more time unless he was being paid per hour. Given that a case with litigation which can easily run in the 20,000 dollars range it is shocking that he could not spend even 15 or 20 mins upfront to help me decide and him get the information to see if this case was a fit. He was condescending and impolite cutting me off mid sentence. I can only imagine what my bill would be like with this guy. In my work I deal with many lawyers and this is the worst introduction or albeit very short, initial experience I have ever had with one.

I had been working with another lawyer from a prestigious downtown firm on my divorce. My case was complicated, 90% about custody, and was definitely going to trial (I had already been to court on several interims hearings, relating to custody). My ex was behaving in a dishonest and vindictive manner, to put it mildly. After about a year into the process (the whole divorce took 2.5 years), I realized that I had to part ways with my current lawyer and find someone who was strategic, could hold their ground in a courtroom, would not get manipulated and pushed around by my ex or his lawyer, and someone who practiced law in an ethical manner (which is personally very important to me). A no-nonsense friend, who had worked with Daniel on her own divorce settlement, referred me to him. Daniel checked off all of the criteria that I had listed above. He was fantastic in the courtroom, and when my trial finally took place, it was like watching a legal drama on TV (in a good way). He took our (very complicated) story and broke it down into an understandable sequence of events for the judge, showing her without a doubt, though cross-examination, and through guiding me in my own testimony, why joint custody was not an option. I won sole custody of the kids, and the judgement on the financial side of things was fair (my ex was asking for spousal support and Daniel did a great job in showing the judge why this would not be appropriate. She ended up agreeing and I was not required to pay). I am not saying, by any means, that Daniel will get you custody of your children and not require you to pay spousal support in your own situation. My particular case pointed to that outcome being the appropriate one, if the facts were well-understood. It takes an excellent lawyer to explain the reality and convince a judge that a particular outcome is the correct one. I am certain that if I had stayed with my original lawyer, the outcome would not have been as positive (even though the facts of the case were the same). Also, although I did not work extensively with Alice Florian (Daniel's intern, at the time), in the interactions that we did have, I was impressed with her strategic mind, and in her deep understanding of family law (something that I did not expect from an intern).
