Our Driveway replacement project We had grown tired of the up and down that our driveway did each season as well as the appearance. Despite having the concrete lifted it still moved up and down and was cracked in a few places. We contacted Karl from Modern Earth about replacing our driveway with block pavers. We contacted several other companies as well. Karl's quote was the most comprehensive Karl described each step, the materials that would be used as well as explaining the need for each step and product. Karl had lots of weather delays this year and was still struggling mid-summer to get jobs completed that were hold overs from last year. When he and his crew arrived the project got started quickly. He had the courtesy to drop off a letter to each of our neighbours to outline the scope and timeline of the project. Our neighbours were impressed. Once he started everything flowed. Every night the street was cleaned. Equipment was placed out of the way and safety cones were strategically placed. If the day's work involved lots of dust his crew went around our home and the adjacent neighbours to blow away any residual dust. NIce touch. The finished product is amazing. We are delighted each time we look out our windows or drive onto the driveway. It is an excellent addition to our home. I highly recommend Karl and Modern Earth.

We highly recommend Karl and Modern Earth Landscaping. Karl and his crew at Modern Earth Landscaping are very professional, polite, and punctual. Every day they arrived early, worked hard, and were very efficient. At the end of the day, they cleaned up and left our place as tidy as possible while under construction. It was evident that Karl had extensive knowledge and expertise; in addition, he had immense pride in his work. When discussing various aspects of the job, he would listen to what we were looking for and make suggestions. As well, he always communicated clearly the construction requirements. Therefore, we could make informed decisions resulting in aesthetically pleasing work with solid construction. We appreciated all of his advice during the construction process. We are very particular, yet Karl exceeded our expectations in creating a beautifully finished yard. Our backyard project consisted of: ● a new main retaining wall ● a new lower garden retaining wall ● replacement of an upper rose garden wall ● two patios (one with a fire pit and one for the hot tub) ● grading correction & new sod ● a walkway from the man door (alongside the garage & fence) to the driveway in the front

Modern Earth landscaped our entire property in the summer of 2015. Karl Jesske and his team had a blank canvas to work with as our property was brand new. We started with a wish list of ideas. Karl took those ideas and implemented them in a 3D landscape design. What he came up with far exceeded our expectations. We did not change a thing on that initial design. It was perfect. The 3D design gave us a very clear picture of what to expect. We could clearly envision what the yard would look like in the end. After several weeks of hard work, the landscaping came to life and WOW! The end result was so true to the 3D design. We were extremely happy with everything. It was exceptional work completed by a hard working and talented crew. We couldn't be more proud to show the yard off and thoroughly enjoy. We are also impressed with the after care, as Karl follows up with any questions and needs we may have on the ongoing care and maintenance of the yard. Amazing work! We are so happy with our yard. We were given expert advise on what would do well in different parts of our yard according to shade, sun and our climate. Prior to the work being done the visual diagrams were crucial to us to see what the landscaping would look like and WOW when the work was completed it was exactly like the diagrams. We had a really good experience with Modern Earth Landscaping. After a miserable time with another contractor Karl came in and started again on our yard. We had substantial stone work to complete and a large multi tiered retaining wall built. We are very happy and glad things where finally built correctly. We would highly recommend them!

Modern Earth did a full landscaping renovation on my 27 y old property in Sept 2020. Pros: The design and final product are beautiful and I get lots of compliments. Karl does an especially excellent job of stonework and my patio and pathway are still perfect. Cons: The fixes Karl was to do in Spring 2021 still haven’t happened. 2 of his crew damaged brand new fence posts when each ran into different posts with the track loader. Stairway and edging still need fixes. The edging is a total safety hazard which Karl promised to fix. Winter 2020/21 was brutal for trees and 5 of 8 large skyrocket junipers died (~$2000 product and labour) as did 4 Bloomerang hydrangeas and 5 spireas (~$400 for replacement product, the work of replacing these I did myself.) Karl took a look at the dying trees in May 2021 saying we should re-evaluate in July 2021. Despite my best efforts over the past 5 months, Karl has not responded no matter how much I've tried to contact him. Even his suppliers say he doesn’t return their calls. Karl doesn’t warranty the plant products which is clear in his contract. In my case, his product pricing was the retail pricing of the nursery. The nursery warranties the product if you buy directly from them but not if purchased through a landscaper. I should have paid closer attention to Karl’s pricing - he gives very detailed estimates - and perhaps I could have received some compensation for the replacement products had I purchased directly through the nursery. A key recommendation I’d have is to do a hold-back. Had I done a hold-back, I think I’d have heard from Karl. I’d at least have been partially compensated for my time in chasing Karl and now having to hire another landscape company to fix Modern Earth’s deficiencies. Being a good customer, who was easy to work with and paid on time didn’t get me anything. Karl's work is really good and he’s knowledgeable and pleasant but it’s super frustrating to never hear back from him. Based on my experience, if you’re not the project that Karl’s working on at the time, don’t expect to hear from him or get his/any attention. It’s now a year later and the items that needed fixing a year ago, still needing fixing and I haven’t heard from Karl in months. Extremely disappointing - I definitely expected more than this.
